Servicing - A/t Chevrolet Camaro II

Automatic Trans 8 illustrations ~1199 words

SERVICE INTERVALS

Check fluid level every 12 months or 7500 miles, whichever comes first. Transmission fluid and filter should be changed every 100,000 miles. On THM 250C transmissions, intermediate (front) band requires adjustment every 60,000 miles, or as required.

Note. For heavy duty operation, transmission should be serviced at 15,000 mile intervals.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

CAUTIONDO NOT overfill. One pint of fluid will raise level from "ADD 1 PT." to "FULL HOT" mark on dipstick with a hot transmission.

All Models (Except THM 125C)

  1. Ensure vehicle is on a level surface, engine is at idle speed, and parking brake is applied. Move selector lever through all ranges, ending in "PARK".
  2. Remove dipstick and wipe dipstick clean, reinstall, then remove again and check fluid level. Fluid level should be above the "ADD 1 PT." mark on dipstick.

THM 125C

  1. Place vehicle on level surface. Apply parking brake and start engine. Move selector lever through all ranges, ending in "PARK".
  2. Remove dipstick and wipe dipstick clean, reinstall, then remove and check fluid level. Fluid level should check between the "ADD" and "FULL" marks on dipstick.
CAUTIONIf vehicle has been operated for an extended period of time at high speed, in city traffic in hot weather, or if vehicle has been pulling a trailer, an accurate fluid level cannot be determined until fluid has cooled down (approximately 30 minutes after vehicle has been parked).

Use only Dexron II (or equivalent) automatic transmission fluid.

FLUID CAPACITY

Note. Quantities listed below are approximate, and correct fluid level should be determined by mark on dipstick, rather than by amount added.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

DRAINING & REFILLING

  1. With vehicle raised and drain pan placed under transmission, remove front and side transmission oil pan bolts. Loosen rear pan bolts approximately 4 turns each.
  2. Pry pan loose carefully with screwdriver, allowing fluid to drain. Remove remaining bolts and oil pan with gasket. Remove screen/filter-to-valve body bolts and remove screen/filter with gasket.
  3. Thoroughly clean pan and screen with solvent and dry with compressed air. Paper type filters should be replaced. Install new gasket or "O" rings lubricated with clean oil into screen/filter assembly and install screen/filter assembly to transmission.
  4. Use new pan gasket and install pan. Add proper amount of fluid to transmission through filler tube and start engine with selector in "PARK" position with parking brake set. Check fluid and add as required. See checking fluid level in this section.
CAUTIONDO NOT overfill transmission.

THM 250C

  1. Position selector lever in "NEUTRAL" position. Loosen lock nut on right side of transmission 1/2 turn and hold in this position.
  2. Tighten adjusting screw to 30 INCH lbs. (3.4 N.m). Back off screw 3 complete turns. Hold adjusting screw in this position and tighten lock nut.

Scheme 102

Scheme 102
  1. Depress metal lock tab on adjuster and hold. Move slider back through fitting away from carburetor lever until slider stops at fitting.
  2. Release lock tab, and on all models except 4-cylinder Camaro, open carburetor lever to full throttle stop to automatically adjust slider to correct setting.
  3. On 4-cylinder Camaro models, rotate idler lever to maximum travel stop position. The cable will automatically adjust itself. Release throttle idler lever. (Scheme 101): Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment (Scheme 102): Detent Cable Adjustment

Diesel Models (Except Celebrity & Chevette)

  1. Remove cruise control rod (if equipped). Disconnect detent cable terminal from throttle assembly. Loosen lock nut on pump rod and shorten several turns. Rotate lever assembly to full throttle position and hold.
  2. Lengthen pump rod until injection pump lever contacts full throttle stop. Release lever and tighten pump rod lock nut.
  3. Remove pump rod from lever assembly. Reconnect detent cable terminal to throttle assembly. Depress and hold metal tab on cable upper end. Move slider through fitting in direction away from lever assembly until slider stops against fitting.
  4. Release tab and rotate lever assembly to full throttle stop. Release lever. Reconnect pump rod. If equipped with cruise control, reconnect rod and adjust servo rod to minimum slack, then install clip in first free hole closest to bellcrank, but within servo bail.

Diesel Models (Celebrity & Chevette)

  1. Remove pump rod from lever assembly and depress metal lock tab. Hold tab and move slider through fitting away from lever assembly until slider stops against fitting.
  2. Release lock tab and rotate lever assembly to full throttle position to automatically adjust slider to correct setting. Release lever and reconnect pump rod to lever assembly.

SHIFT LINKAGE

Note. Manual linkage should be adjusted so that engine will not start in positions except "PARK" and "NEUTRAL". With selector lever in "PARK" position, parking pawl should engage within rear/reaction internal gear lugs or output ring gear lugs and prevent vehicle from moving.

Scheme 103

Scheme 103: Floor Shift - RWD Models
  1. Disconnect shifter link from shifter assembly and place shifter assembly in "NEUTRAL" notch of detent plate.
  2. Place transmission lever in Neutral position by moving clockwise to maximum detent position, then back (counterclockwise) 2 detents to Neutral. Adjust link until hole and pin line up, then install shim and retainer. (Scheme 103): Floor Shift Linkage - RWD Models

Scheme 104

Scheme 104: Floor Shift - FWD Models
  1. Place shift lever in "NEUTRAL" position. Place transaxle lever in Neutral notch. Loosely assemble nut to pin through transaxle lever with transaxle cable assembled to pin.
