Control Module References

Service Programming System (SPS)

For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

IMPORTANTDO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger, may cause programming failure or control module damage. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  5. DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

Audio Amplifier Programming and Setup

There is no setup procedure that needs to be performed for the amplifier on this vehicle.

Introduction

The procedures below are designed to set-up the body control module (BCM) correctly during BCM related service. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely.

IMPORTANTThe following procedures must be followed
  1. Programming the BCM.
  2. Programming Theft Deterrent System Components, if equipped with Passlock System.

Programming the BCM

IMPORTANTAfter the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to a default setting. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again.

Perform the BCM special function "Request BCM Info. for SPS", then connect the scan tool to the SPS terminal and follow the instructions on the screen. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Programming Theft Deterrent System Components

Perform the Programming Theft Deterrent System Components after successfully finishing the Setup New BCM procedure. If the Programming Theft Deterrent System Components is not performed after a BCM replacement, one of the following conditions will occur

  1. The vehicle will not be protected against theft by the PASSLOCK system.
  2. The engine will not crank or start.
IMPORTANTAfter programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  5. Clear all history DTCs.

Communication Interface Module Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

Communication Interface Module Replacement

If the OnStar® communication interface module is replaced, the setup procedure needs to be performed. Please refer to OnStar Reconfiguration (w/o SPS Programming) .

Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.

Radio Replacement

If the digital radio receiver is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

Perform the digital radio receiver setup. Refer to Digital Radio Receiver Setup .

Driver Door Module

After replacing the driver door module (DDM), perform the programing procedure. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Passenger Door Module

After replacing the passenger door module (PDM), perform the following programing and setup procedures

EBCM Replacement

If the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

Revise the tire calibration using the Scan Tool Tire Size calibration function.

Energy Storage Control Module Programming and Setup

The energy storage control module (ESCM) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (With RPO LLY or LBZ)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. Capture and restore the Option data.

  3. The Turbocharger Learn Procedure-Refer to «Turbocharger Learn»(ref-277871-S39576691672008012100000) .
  4. Theft Deterrent-Refer to «Programming Theft Deterrent System Components»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#theft-deterrent-system) .
  5. The Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming-Refer to «Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming»(ref-277871-S04760390982008012100000) .
  6. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  7. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  8. Fuel Filter Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Fuel Filter Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

ECM Reprogramming

  1. If the engine control module (ECM) needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  3. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  4. Fuel Filter Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Fuel Filter Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a Turbocharger Learn Procedure must be performed.

  1. Turbocharger
  2. Turbocharger Vane Position Sensor.
  3. Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve

Garage Door Opener Programming and Setup

The garage door opener (GDO) programming and setup procedures must be performed after replacement. Refer to Garage Door Opener Programming - Universal on how to program the GDO.

Generator Battery Control Module Programming and Setup

The generator battery control module must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Generator Control Module Programming and Setup

The starter generator control module (SGCM) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Glow Plug Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

GPCM Replacement

If the glow plug controller (GPCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed.

  1. «Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming»(ref-277871-S04760390982008012100000) for fuel injector flow rate programming
  2. «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) for GPCM programming

GPCM Reprogramming

If the glow plug controller (GPCM) needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, the Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming must be performed. Refer to Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming .

  1. Fuel injector
  2. Engine control module (ECM)
  3. GPCM

HVAC Control Module Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures may require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the HVAC control module or HVAC actuators.

HVAC Control Module Replacement

If the HVAC control module is replaced, an automatic re-calibration of all the actuators will occur. No additional procedures are necessary.

HVAC Control Module Reprogramming

Do not reprogram the HVAC control module, unless directed by a service procedure, or a service bulletin.

Reprogram HVAC Control Module-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Actuator Replacement

If an actuator is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

  1. Re-Calibrating Actuators-Refer to «Actuator Recalibration»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-automatic__actuator-recalibration) for the manual system.
  2. Re-Calibrating Actuators-Refer to «Actuator Recalibration»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-automatic__actuator-recalibration) for the automatic system.

Hybrid Control Module Programming and Setup

The hybrid control module (HCM) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

The replacement of the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) will require that the SDM part number be relearned by other modules, such as the body control module (BCM), and the powertrain control module (PCM). The following procedures are designed to setup the SDM correctly and must be performed.

IMPORTANTThe Air Bag indicator may illuminate and DTC B1001 may set during the BCM reprogramming procedure. Use the 10-minute relearn procedure when programming the theft deterrent system.
  1. With the scan tool, perform the SETUP NEW SDM function located within the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint > Module Setup menu.
  2. Check for DTC B1001. If B1001 is current, program the BCM with the proper regular production options (RPO). Refer to «Body Control Module Programming and Setup»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems) .
  3. Clear any DTC.
  4. Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information__diagnostic-system-check-vehicle) .

Compass Calibration and Variance Procedures

When the inside rearview mirror with compass is replaced, the compass must be setup utilizing the Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance .

Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Setup Procedures

After replacing the memory seat module, the calibration procedure must be performed. Refer to Memory Seat Control Module Replacement .

The passenger presence system (PPS) is a calibrated system that requires rezeroing when the system has been serviced or replaced. The procedures below are designed to assist in the rezeroing of the PPS. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely. For further information regarding the PPS, refer to SIR System Description and Operation .

IMPORTANTThe following procedures must be followed
  1. Read this procedure carefully and completely.
  2. The PPS will not function properly if the PPS rezeroing procedure is not performed.
  3. Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information__diagnostic-system-check-vehicle) , after successfully completing the rezeroing procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Passenger Presence System (PPS) Rezeroing Procedure

Important

  1. Before rezeroing the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS.
  2. When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming on and off. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.
  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. Verify that all supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) and PPS components, connectors and connector position assurances (CPAs) are properly connected and mounted.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  6. With a scan tool, request the PPS rezeroing procedure.
  7. Initiate the PPS rezeroing procedure. The PPS will illuminate both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators located on the rearview mirror until the rezeroing procedure has been completed. When the rezeroing procedure has been successfully completed, the PPS will display the current system status at the rearview mirror indicator. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators, located on the rearview mirror, will alternate from no illumination to full illumination in 1-second intervals, for 5 seconds. The PPS will treat an unsuccessful rezero attempt as a system fault.
  8. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, repeat this procedure. Due to the communication status between the SDM and the PPS module, this procedure may have to be repeated until a successful rezero attempt has been achieved.
  9. After the PPS has been successfully rezeroed, perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information__diagnostic-system-check-vehicle) .

Power Steering Pump Replacement (HP2)

If the electro-hydraulic power steering pump is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

W/ HP2-Calibrate the brake pedal position sensor. Refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration .

Powertrain Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

PCM Replacement

If the powertrain control module (PCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. The PCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. The CKP Variation Learn-Refer to the appropriate procedure: «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(ref-277873-S20031840482008012100000) for the 4.3L (LU3) engine. «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-and-fuel-48l-53l-and-60l-introduction-2-of-2__crankshaft-position-system-variation-learn) for the 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L (LR4, LM7, LQ4, LQ9, or L59) engine. «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-and-fuel-81l-introduction-2-of-2__crankshaft-position-system-variation-learn) for the 8.1L (L18) engine.
  3. The Theft Deterrent Programming-Refer to «Programming Theft Deterrent System Components»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#immobilizer-system) .
  4. The Fuel Composition Diagnostic-Refer to «Fuel Composition Diagnosis»(ref-277893-S24630725732008012100000) for the 5.3L (L59).

PCM Reprogramming

  1. If the PCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Perform the Fuel Composition Diagnostic-Refer to «Fuel Composition Diagnosis»(ref-277893-S24630725732008012100000) for the 5.3L (L59).
  3. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  4. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed.

  1. Engine Replacement
  2. Any engine repair that disturbs the CKP sensor or it's relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
  3. CKP Sensor

Radio Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.

If the radio is replaced, the new radio must have the setup procedure performed. Refer to Radio Setup (With RPO UM8) .

Sunroof Control Module Programming and Setup

After replacing the sunroof control module, the calibration procedure must be performed. Refer to Sunroof Motor/Actuator Synchronization .

Programming and Setup Procedures

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement

If the transfer case shift control module is replaced, the transfer case shift control module reprogramming procedure must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Reprogramming

If the transfer case shift control module needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for transfer case shift control module programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the transfer case shift control module using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the transfer case shift control module fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure that the transfer case shift control module connection is OK.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the transfer case shift control module. If the transfer case shift control module still cannot be programmed properly, replace the transfer case shift control module.

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Setup

This device requires no setup.

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

Transmission Control Module (TCM) Replacement

If the TCM is replaced, TCM Reprogramming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

TCM Reprogramming

If the TCM is reprogrammed, TCM Reprogramming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure the TCM connection is good.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
