Visual/Physical Inspection
- Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the automatic transmission shift lock control system. - Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
Intermittent

Circuit/System Description
With the ignition in the ON position and the shift lever is in PARK, battery positive voltage is supplied from the body control module (BCM) to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid through the normally-closed automatic transmission shift lock control switch. When the transmission control module (TCM) indicates the shift lever is in the PARK position, the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) sends a class 2 serial data message to the BCM indicating the transmission is in the PARK position. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Since the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded, the shift lock control solenoid energizes, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to de-energize, unlocking the shift lever from the PARK position.

Circuit/System Verification
With a scan tool, monitor the Trans. Range Sw. data to verify vehicle is in the Park position.
- If data does not display Park, replace the internal mode switch (IMS). Refer to «Transmission Internal Mode Switch Replacement»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-allison-introduction-2-of-2__transmission-internal-mode-switch-replacement) .
Circuit/System Testing
- With the ignition ON, connect a test lamp between the A/T shift lock solenoid ground and supply voltage. Verify test lamp illuminates. If the test lamp does not turn ON, repair the ground circuit.
- With the ignition ON, connect a test lamp between the A/T shift lock solenoid supply power and a good ground. Verify the test lamp does not illuminate. If the test lamp turns ON, replace the A/T shift lock solenoid.
- Test the stop lamp switch for proper operation and supply power from the BCM. If testing indicates no supply power from the BCM, refer to Circuit/System Verification above.
- If no trouble found in circuit, replace the BCM.

Removal Procedure
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
- Remove the body control module (BCM). Refer to «Body Control Module Replacement»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#data-communication-system) .
- Put the shift lever clevis into the neutral position.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Using a small screwdriver, pry the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator away from the steering column jacket and the cable shift cam.
- Remove the shift lock control actuator.
Installation Procedure
- Firmly install the shift lock control actuator onto the steering column jacket and the cable shift cam.
- Connect the electrical connector.
- Adjust the shift lock control actuator (with the shift lever clevis in the neutral position) in the following way: Pull out the tab (1) on the adjuster block side (2) of the shift lock control actuator. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring which disengages the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block (2) as far away from the actuator as possible. Lock the adjuster block (2) in place by pushing in on the tab (1).
- Inspect the shift lock control actuator for the following items: The shift lock control actuator must lock the shift lever clevis when the shift lever clevis is put into the park position. Depress the brake pedal to move the shift lever out of the park position. The actuator will be energized. Readjust the shift lock control actuator if needed.
- Install the BCM. Refer to «Body Control Module Replacement»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/communication-devices/#data-communication-system) .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «SIR Disabling and Enabling»(/chevrolet/cab-chassis-silverado-3500/2003-2012/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system__sir-disabling-and-enabling) .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System with Allison Transmission
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components
- The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.
- The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.
- The body control module (BCM).
- The engine control module (ECM), if equipped with a 6.6L engine.
- The powertrain control module (PCM), if equipped with a 8.1L engine.
