Circuit/System Description

The driver seat belt switch is a 2-wire switch wired to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) using a signal circuit and a low reference circuit. When the seat belt is unbuckled the switch is closed, and when the seat belt is buckled the switch is open. The SDM sends the status of the driver seat belt via serial data to the instrument panel cluster (IPC). After receiving the message, the IPC controls the illumination of the driver seat belt indicator.

The passenger seat belt indicator will remain ON with seat occupied and the seat belt buckled. The passenger seat belt indicator will not illuminate with the seat occupied and the seat belt disconnected, but will illuminate for the bulb test. No indicator on the inflatable restraint passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator will illuminate at any time. The passenger seat belt indicator will illuminate at all times. The passenger seat belt indicator will never illuminate but the PPS ON/OFF indicator does.

The seat belt buckle switch is located within the seat belt buckle assembly and provides an input to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM supplies a low reference circuit and a seat belt switch signal circuit to determine a buckled or unbuckled condition.

If the SDM determines the driver seat belt has not been buckled, the SDM will send a serial data message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the seat belt warning indicator. If the SDM determines that a passenger is sitting in the passenger seat and the seat belt has not been buckled, the SDM will send a serial data message to the passenger presence system (PPS) display to illuminate the passenger seat belt warning indicator.

Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision

WARNINGRestraint systems can be damaged in a collision. To help avoid injury and ensure that all parts in need of replacement are replaced: Replace any seat belt system that was in use during the collision serious enough to deploy any automatic restraint device such as air bags and seat belt pretensioners. This not only includes seat belt systems in use by people of adult size, but seat belt systems used to secure child restraints, infant carriers and booster seats, including LATCH system and top tether anchorages. Replace any seat belt system that has torn, worn, or damaged components. This not only includes adult seat belt systems, but built-in child restraints and LATCH system components, if any. Replace any seat belt system if you observe the words "REPLACE" or "CAUTION", or if a yellow tag is visible. Do not replace a seat belt if only the child seat caution label is visible. Replace any seat belt system if you are doubtful about its condition. This not only includes adult seat belt systems, but built-in child restraints, LATCH system components, and any restraint system used to secure infant carriers, child restraints, and booster seats. Do NOT replace single seat belt system components in vehicles that have been in a collision as described above. Always replace the entire seat belt system with the buckle, guide and retractor assembly, which includes the latch and webbing material.

After a minor collision where no automatic restraint device was deployed, seat belt system replacement may not be necessary, unless some of the parts are torn, worn, or damaged.

Restraint System

Seat belts are the primary means of occupant restraint.

Seat belts help to keep occupants inside the passenger compartment and to gradually reduce the impact forces.

All seat belt retractors have emergency locks. The retractors remain unlocked during normal operation and under normal driving conditions. The retractors remain unlocked during normal conditions in order to allow free movement of the upper body of each occupant.

A pendulum locks the seat belt webbing into position. The pendulum causes a locking bar to engage a cog on the spool of the retractor mechanism when the following conditions occur

  1. A rapid extraction of the seat belt webbing from the retractor
  2. An abrupt change in the vehicle speed
  3. An abrupt change in the vehicle direction
  4. Operation of the vehicle on a steep upgrade
  5. Operation of the vehicle on a steep downgrade

The seat belts, except for the driver seat belt, have an automatic locking feature, or a cinch feature. The cinch feature is recommended for securing a child seat. The cinch feature is engaged by fully extending the seat belt from the retractor. Once engaged, the seat belt can retract, but cannot be extended again until the cinch feature is cancelled. The cinch feature is cancelled when the seat belt has fully retracted.

This vehicle is also equipped with a supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to SIR System Description and Operation for a description of the seat belt pretensioner system.

The front seat belt system includes the following components

  1. The driver and passenger seat belt buckles, attached to the inboard side of the seat frame
  2. The driver and passenger seat belt pretensioners
  3. The driver and passenger seat belt switch located in the seat belt buckles

There are two fasten safety belt indicators for this vehicle. The driver fasten safety belt indicator is located on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and the passenger fasten safety belt indicator is located near the center of the instrument panel (I/P). Both indicators are controlled by the IPC at the request of the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The driver and passenger indicators when initiated will illuminate for 20 seconds followed by 55 seconds of flashing. Audible warnings will initiate simultaneously with visual warnings and last for 8 seconds. Subsequently, similar events will occur until the seat belts are buckled or the ignition is returned to the OFF position.

The driver fasten safety belt indicator will illuminate when any of the following occur

  1. The driver seat belt is unbuckled while the ignition is ON.
  2. The driver seat belt remains unbuckled and vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph).
  3. Three minutes after previous seat belt status reminder event
  4. The IPC performs the displays test at the start of each ignition cycle.
IMPORTANTThe front passenger seat is equipped with a passenger presence system (PPS), which detects an occupant. If the PPS detects an empty front passenger seat, then the passenger fasten safety belt indicator will be disabled.

The passenger fasten safety belt indicator will illuminate when any of the following occur

  1. Twenty-five seconds after the ignition is ON and the front passenger seat belt remains unbuckled with passenger present
  2. The front passenger seat belt remains unbuckled with passenger present and vehicle speed is greater than 5 mph (8 km/h).
  3. Three minutes after previous seat belt status reminder event
  4. The IPC performs the displays test at the start of each ignition cycle.

Refer to Symptoms - Seat Belts in order to diagnose faults of the fasten safety belt indicators.
