DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
| WARNING | Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
CIRCUIT OPERATION
A permanent magnet (PM) motor operates each of the power windows. Each motor raises or lowers the glass when voltage is supplied to it. The direction the motor turns depends on the polarity of the supply voltage. The switches control the supply voltage's polarity.
The master switch assembly controls all of the motors. Each power window switch controls only one of the motors.
Each motor is protected by a built in electronic circuit breaker Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC). If a power window switch is held too long with the window obstructed or after the window is fully up or down, the PTC resistance increases. The resistance returns to normal after voltage is removed from the motor.
MASTER SWITCH OPERATION
When the ignition switch is in RUN position, battery voltage is applied to the master switch assembly through circuit breaker No. 12 and PNK wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . When any of the UP switches in the master switch assembly are operated, battery voltage is applied to the power window motor through the DK BLU or DK BLU/WHT wires.
The power window motor is grounded through the DN contact in the master switch assembly. The motor runs to drive the window up. When any of the DN switches in the master switch assembly are operated, battery voltage is applied to the power window motor in the opposite direction through the BRN or TAN wires. The power window motor is grounded through the UP contact in the master switch assembly. The motor runs to drive the window down.
If the left front DN switch in the master switch assembly is pressed past the first detent, the window will travel to the full down position without holding the DN switch depressed.
POWER WINDOW SWITCH OPERATION (4-DOOR ONLY)
When the ignition switch is RUN, battery voltage is applied to the power window switches through circuit breaker 12 and the PNK wires to terminal A. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . When the UPswitch in the left rear power window switch is operated, battery voltage is applied to the left rear power window motor through the DK BLU wire.
The motor is grounded through the BRN wire, and the DN contact in the master switch assembly. The motor runs to drive the window up. When the DN switch in the left rear power switch is operated, battery voltage is applied to the left rear power window motor in the opposite direction through the BRN wire. The motor is grounded through the DK BLU wire, and the UP contact in the master switch assembly. The motor runs to drive the window down. The other windows operate similarly from their individual power window switches.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Verify customer complaint by operating suspected system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- If all the power windows do not operate, check the circuit breaker 12in instrument panel fuse block.
- Check that ground G300 is clean and tight.
- If a motor's internal circuit breaker trips, it will not reset until voltage is removed from the motor.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
- Use the System Check Table as a guide to normal operation. (Scheme 7)
- If problem exists, repair by symptom. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(/chevrolet/beretta/i-1987-1996/remont/windows/#power-windows).

WATER DEFLECTOR
Waterproof deflectors are used to seal the door inner panel and prevent entry of water into the body. The deflector is secured by an adhesive sealer material along the front edges, rear edges and bottom, and by the application of waterproof sealing tape. Whenever work is performed where the water deflector has been disturbed, the deflector must be properly sealed and taped to the inner panel to prevent water leaks. For service sealing, strip caulking is recommended if additional sealing material is required.

WINDOW REGULATOR MOTOR
Note. To aid in removal and installation procedure refer to illustration. (Scheme 40), (Scheme 42) and (Scheme 41).
- Remove the window regulator. See «WINDOW REGULATORS»(/chevrolet/beretta/i-1987-1996/remont/windows/#power-windows__window-regulators).
- Drill a hole through the regulator sector gear and backplate, and install a bolt and nut to lock sector gear in position. Do not drill hole closer than 13 mm (1/2 in) to edge of sector gear or backplate. (Scheme 40)
- Using a 3/16 in. drill bit, drill out the ends of all three motor to regulator attaching rivets from the motor side of the assembly.
- Remove motor from regulator and the remaining portions of the rivets. Depending on the position of the regulator, it may be necessary to remove portions of one remaining rivet later.
Scheme 40
Scheme 41
- Position the new motor to regulator back plate, and with the aid of a helper, install new rivets (1/4 x 31/32 inch) by collapsing or crushing the end of the rivet with a ball been hammer. (Scheme 41)
- Once motor is secured to the back plate with two rivets, remove the bolt that was installed previously to secure the sector gear to the back plate. Use an electric power source, rotate regulator in the desired direction to provide access to the remaining rivet. NOTE: It may be necessary to grind a portion off of the sector gear to provide space to remove and install the remaining rivet. (Scheme 42)
- Once the remaining rivet can be removed, install new rivet (1/4 x 31/32 inch).
- Install regulator and motor assembly.
- Remove window regulator. See «WINDOW REGULATORS»(/chevrolet/beretta/i-1987-1996/remont/windows/#power-windows__window-regulators) .
- Remove the motor by drilling out rivets holding motor to actuator using a 6.3 mm (1/4 in.) drill bit.
- Remove window regulator motor.
- Install the motor to regulator using a rivet (1/4 x 31/32 inch ).
- Install the window regulator.
- Remove the window regulator. See «WINDOW REGULATORS»(/chevrolet/beretta/i-1987-1996/remont/windows/#power-windows__window-regulators) .
- Connect regulator motor to harness connector.
- Remove tape from tabs on regulator.
- Run tape out of regulator.
- Cut service tape to 874 mm (34-1/2 in.) for power window regulator.
- Install tape to regulator.
- Slots on tape to tabs on regulator.
- Install regulator.
- Remove door window. See «WINDOW GLASS»(/chevrolet/beretta/i-1987-1996/remont/windows/#power-windows).
- Remove the rivets by using a 3/16 in. drill bit, taking care not to enlarge holes in sash channel. Replace sash if holes are enlarged during drilling operation.
- Remove sash channel and spacer. (Scheme 37)and (Scheme 38).
- Locate spacer to glass.
- Install the sash channel to spacer and glass.
- Install the rivets through holes in sash, spacer and glass using 3/16 x .527 inch aluminum dome-head blind rivets.
- Install door window.
- Remove door window and place glass on a protected surface to prevent damage.
- Remove rivets using a 3/16 in. drill bit, taking care not to enlarge holes in sash channel. If sash channel holes are enlarged during drilling operation, replace sash channel.
- Remove sash channel and spacer. (Scheme 43)
