Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (without LXV)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Replacement
Note. It is not necessary to program a new engine control module (ECM). The ECM is programmed from the factory. Ensure the new ECM is equipped with the latest software/calibration.
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed
- Idle learn procedure-Refer to the appropriate procedure: Idle Learn for the 1.2L engine Idle Learn for the 1.4L (L95) DOHC engine Idle Learn for the 1.4L (LDT) DOHC engine Idle Learn for the 1.5L engine Idle Learn for the 1.6L (LXT) engine
- The crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure- Refer to the appropriate procedure: Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.4L (L95) DOHC engine Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.4L (LDT) DOHC engine Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.5L engine Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.6L (LXT) engine
- Theft Deterrent-Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components. The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's password.
ECM Reprogramming
If the engine control module (ECM) needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
- If any of the following components are replaced, an idle learn procedure must be performed. Refer to the appropriate procedure: Idle Learn for the 1.2L engine Idle Learn for the 1.4L (L95) DOHC engine Idle Learn for the 1.4L (LDT) DOHC engine Idle Learn for the 1.5L engine Idle Learn for the 1.6L (LXT) engine Throttle body assembly ECM
- If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP variation learn procedure must be performed. Refer to the appropriate procedure: Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.4L (L95) DOHC engine Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.4L (LDT) DOHC engine Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.5L engine Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.6L (LXT) engine CKP sensor Engine replacement Any engine repair that disturbs the relationship between CKP sensor and the crankshaft reluctor wheel.
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (with LXV)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
| WARNING | Replacement or reprogramming of the ECM, or replacement of the clutch pedal position sensor (CPPS) or clutch pedal requires that a CPPS learn procedure be performed. Failure to perform the CPPS learn procedure may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle or its components if the vehicle is in gear and the starter motor is accidentally engaged. |
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed
- ECM reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/chevrolet/aveo/i-2006-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
- Clutch pedal position sensor learn-Refer to «Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn»(/chevrolet/aveo/i-2006-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__clutch-pedal-position-sensor-learn) .
- Heated oxygen (HO2S) sensor heater learn procedure using scan tool.
- Idle learn procedure-Refer to «Idle Learn»(ref-318492-S08829587412009061700000) .
- The crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure-Refer to «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(ref-318492-S37594376172009061700000) .
- Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
- Theft Deterrent-Refer to «Programming Theft Deterrent System Components»(/chevrolet/aveo/i-2006-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#theft-deterrent-system) . The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn
Note. The clutch pedal position (CPP) sensor learn procedure is required when the following service procedures have been performed regardless of whether DTC P080A is set: An engine control module (ECM) replacement A CPP sensor replacement Any repairs which affect the CPP sensor relationship
- Install a scan tool.
- Monitor the ECM for DTCs with a scan tool. If other DTCs are set, except DTC P080A, refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) LIST - VEHICLE»(/chevrolet/aveo/i-2006-2012/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-list) for the applicable DTC that set.
- With a scan tool, select Clutch Pedal Position Learn under Module Setup in Manual Transmission, and perform the following instructions displayed on the scan tool screen. Note: The CPP sensor learn procedure cannot be performed more than once per ignition cycle. The clutch pedal needs to be fully depressed and held steady throughout this procedure in order to perform a correct learning. NOTE: The CPP sensor learn procedure cannot be performed more than once per ignition cycle. - The scan tool will display under CPP Learn Status: Not Learned, In Process, Complete, Fail - Low Volt, Fail - High Volt, or Fail Moving. The scan tool will display under CPP Learn Status Complete if the process was successful.
- If the scan tool indicates that DTC P080A ran and passed this ignition the CPP sensor learn procedure is complete. If any other DTC is set, refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) LIST - VEHICLE»(/chevrolet/aveo/i-2006-2012/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-list) for the applicable DTC.
- Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure has successfully completed in order to store the CPP sensor variation values in ECM history.
Service Programming System (SPS)
For step-by-step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.
Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.
| IMPORTANT | DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, it is recommended that an external power source be used to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. To ensure trouble-free programming, GM recommends using one of the following external power sources: A Midtronics PSC charger A fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO. |
Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module
- FlexFuel (E85) Vehicles The fuel composition learn function is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn is inactive.
- Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
- The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
- Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
- DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
- DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.
