DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
A permanent magnet (PM) motor operates each power window. Each motor raises and lowers the glass when voltage is supplied to it. The direction the motor turns depends on polarity of the supply voltage. The switches control the supply voltage polarity.
The master door lock/power window switch assembly controls both motors. The right window switch controls only the right window motor. Each motor is protected by a built-in circuit breaker. If a window switch is held too long with the window obstructed or after the window is fully up or down, the circuit breaker opens the circuit. The circuit breaker resets automatically as it cools.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer system have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Before proceeding to TESTING, perform the following visual inspections
- Check POWER WINDOW CIRCUIT BREAKER for damage. Replace if damaged.
- Check power window voltage supply fuse. If fuse is blown, service and repair source of overload. Replace fuse.
TESTING
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer system have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Note. Before any testing is attempted, the battery should be fully charged and all connections and pins cleaned and tightened to ensure proper continuity and ground.
- Turn ignition on. Connect test light between Pink wire at left window switch connector and ground. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open in Pink wire between window switch connector and ground, and from ground to fuse block. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Pink and Black wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Black wire from left window switch connector to ground at convenience center.
Switch
- Turn ignition on. Connect test light between Pink wire and ground at right window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Pink wire. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Move right window switch to UP position. Connect test light between Brown wire and ground at right window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, replace right window switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Move right window switch to DOWN position. Connect test light between Dark Blue wire and ground at right window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, replace right window switch. If test light illuminates, system is operating properly.
Direction
- Turn ignition on. Connect test light between Pink wire and ground at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Pink wire. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Pink and Black wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Black ground wire. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Move and hold left window switch in UP position. Connect test light between Brown wire and ground at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, replace left window switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Brown and Dark Blue wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, replace left window switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Brown wire at left window motor connector and ground. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Brown wire. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Brown and Dark Blue wires at left window motor connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Dark Blue wire. If test light illuminates, replace left window motor.
Right Window Does Not Operate From Either Switch
- Place ignition switch in run position. Position and hold right window switch in UP position. Connect test light between Brown wire at right window motor connector and ground. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 3). If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Brown and Dark Blue wires at right window motor connector. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 4). If test light illuminates, replace right window motor.
- Connect test light between Pink wire at left window switch connector and ground. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Pink wire. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
- Connect test light between Pink and Dark Blue/White wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 6).
- Connect test light between Pink and Black wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Pink wire. If test light illuminates, replace left window switch.
- Connect test light between Pink and Tan wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 8).
- Connect test light between Pink and Black wires at left window switch connector. If test light does not illuminate, service and repair open circuit in Black ground wire. If test light illuminates, replace left window switch.
- Connect test light between Pink wire and Dark Blue/White, then Tan wire at right window switch connector. If test light illuminates at only one wire or not at all, service and repair open circuit. If test light illuminates at both wires, replace right window switch.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer system have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Removal & Installation (Window Motor)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Slide armrest cover toward rear of door. Remove 2 armrest cover screws and remove armrest cover. Using Door Handle Clip Remover (J 09886-01), remove window door handle, if equipped. Use Trim Pad and Garnish Clip Remover (J 38778) and pry cover from door near clips. Remove power window switch connectors.
- Remove screw from behind armrest pad. With trim pad and garnish clip remover, remove trim panel retainers from door. Remove trim panel from door. Using a 1/4" (6 mm) drill bit, remove rivet heads from armrest bracket. Remove armrest bracket. Remove water dam.
- Roll window up. Apply cloth-backed body tape from window over top of door to other side of window holding glass in position when regulator is removed. Disconnect wiring harness from regulator motor. Using 1/4" (6 mm) drill bit, remove regulator-to-door rivets.
- Push regulator into door and slide in and forward. Then push rearward to remove regulator arms from sash and regulator rail. Fold regulator arms together and remove regulator through access hold. CAUTION: Next step must be performed when regulator motor is removed from regulator. Regulator lift arms are under tension from counterbalance spring and can cause serious personal injury if motor is removed without first locking sector gear in position.
- Install a self-tapping, pan head sheet metal screw through sector gear and backing plate at hole provided to lock sector gear into position. Drill out motor-to-regulator attaching rivets. Remove motor from regulator. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate motor drive gear and regulator sector teeth. Check mesh of motor-to-regulator before installing new 1/4" (6 mm) rivets.
Removal & Installation (Window Switch)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Press tabs and remove door switch mount plate. Disconnect electrical connectors. To install, reverse removal procedures.
