Diagnostic Starting Point - Roof

Begin the system diagnosis with Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle . The diagnostic system check - vehicle will provide the following information

1. The identification of the control modules which command the system
2. The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit
3. The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status

The use of the diagnostic system check - vehicle will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Circuit Description

Battery positive voltage is supplied to the folding top control (FTC) module from the BAT MAIN 2 fuse. When commanded, this voltage is used by the FTC module to power the folding top pump motor through the motor control circuits. When an overcurrent condition is detected, the FTC module disables the folding top pump motor in order to protect the internal FTC module circuitry.

DTC Descriptor

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B1011 System Disabled Information Stored

Conditions for Running the DTC

The FTC module monitors for overcurrent only when the power folding top pump motor is active.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The FTC module will set DTC B1011 when the measured current exceeds 81-amps for 100 milliseconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

1. All folding top functions in progress are aborted, including calibrations of the folding top.
2. The FTC module will suspend operation of the folding top pump motor.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

1. The DTC will clear on the current status after the condition for setting the fault is corrected.
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. A history and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids

Perform a visual inspection for loose or poor connections at all related components. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

1. 3: This test determines if the suspect motor has an internal short to ground.
2. 9: This test verifies the repair.

DTC B1011

The folding top control (FTC) module checks the circuits listed, at least once every 300 milliseconds

1. Convertible top header latched switch signal of the header latched switch.
2. Convertible top header unlatched switch signal of the header unlatched switch.

Both switches are supplied accessory voltage, and when a switch is active, it will apply the voltage signaling the FTC module.

The header latched switch will close, signaling the FTC module when the header latch has latched and secured the folding top when it is in either the closed or stowed position. The header unlatched switch will close, signaling the FTC module when the folding top latch is in the fully unlatched position. This would be when the folding top is between the closed and stowed positions.

The diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B1300 Convertible Top/Moveable Roof Header Latched Sensor Circuit

The battery voltage is between 9-16 volts.

The FTC module detects inputs from both the header latched and header unlatched switch signal circuits being active at the same time.

1. Stores a current and history DTC B1300 in the FTC module.
2. The folding top operation is suspended.
3. The FTC module sends a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC), displaying: TOP NOT SECURE.

1. This DTC will clear on the current status after the condition for setting the fault is corrected.
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. History and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then one of the switches may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

DTC B1300

The folding top closed switch signals the folding top control (FTC) module when the folding top closes against the windshield header. The FTC module checks the signal circuit at least once every 300 milliseconds. The folding top closed switch will close as the RH receiver detects the RH pin from the folding top. The accessory voltage supplied to the folding top closed switch will be applied through the limit switch through the hard top connected signal circuit, to the FTC module. The FTC module will then continue through the operating sequences, completing the operation.

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B1310 Convertible Top/Moveable Roof Main Movement Up Sensor Circuit

The battery voltage is between 9-16 volts

The FTC module detects the folding top closed switch is active, closed, when the folding top position sensor indicates the top is open, past the folding top open reference position.

1. Stores a current and history DTC B1310 in the FTC module.
2. The folding top operation is suspended.
3. The FTC module sends a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC), displaying TOP NOT SECURE.

1. This DTC will clear on the current status after the condition for setting the fault is corrected.
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. History and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the switch may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

DTC B1310

The folding top control (FTC) module monitors the accessory voltage at least once every 300 milliseconds. This accessory voltage is protected by the trunk latch/top switch 15-amp fuse that also supplies voltage to other limit switches

1. Header latched switch
2. Header unlatched switch
3. Cargo cover luggage barrier switch
4. Rear compartment lid open switch or deck lid open switch
5. Top closed switch

The diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B1420 Device Voltage

The battery voltage is between 9-16 volts.

1. If the FTC module detects the accessory voltage dropping below 3 volts.
2. The power mode is either in Accessory, RUN, Rap or Crank.

1. Stores a current and history DTC B1420 in the FTC module.
2. The folding top operation is suspended.
3. If the condition occurs during operation of the folding top, once the top control switch is released, the FTC module will send a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC), displaying TOP NOT SECURE.

1. This DTC will clear on the current status after the condition for setting the fault is corrected.
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. History and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the accessory voltage circuit between the fuse and the FTC module may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

DTC B1420

The folding top control (FTC) module checks the integrity of the signal circuits from the folding top control switch at least once every 300 milliseconds. The folding top control switch has a constant battery positive voltage supplied. Pressing the folding top control switch to the open or close position will apply the battery positive voltage to the folding top control switch open or close signal circuit to the FTC module. The FTC module monitors the signal request to control direction movement of the folding top.

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B3602 Convertible Top Switch

The battery voltage is between 9-16 volts.

1. When the FTC module detects inputs on both the FTC switch open and close signal circuits at the same time.
2. When the FTC module detects either of the FTC switch open or close signal circuits active for 3 minutes or more.

1. Stores a current and history DTC B3602 in the FTC module.
2. The folding top operation is suspended.

1. This DTC will clear on the current status after the condition for setting the fault is corrected.
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. History and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the switch may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

DTC B3602

The folding top control (FTC) module supplies a 5-volt reference and low reference circuit to the front tonneau position sensor. The position sensor sends a voltage signal that varies with the movement of the front tonneau panel through the signal circuit to the FTC module. Then based on this voltage signal, parameters are converted and displayed as counts, the FTC module determines the position of the front tonneau and continues with the operating sequence.

The diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B3665 Front Tonneau Position Error

The FTC module must be powered and can not have B1327 or B1328 set as active DTCs for this DTC to set.

If the FTC module sees the analog input from this position sensor as either lower than 0.25 volts (12 counts or less) or higher than 4.75 volts (242 counts or above), the position sensor will be considered out of range and the FTC module will set this DTC.

1. The FTC module disables all folding top functions.
2. If the condition occurs during operation of the folding top, once the top control switch is released, the FTC module will send a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC), displaying TOP NOT SECURE.

The FTC module will clear the DTC as an active malfunction when it sees the analog input from this position sensor as between 0.25 volts (12 counts) and 4.75 volts (242 counts) during one cycle of checking the FTC module inputs.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the switch may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

All position sensors use common ground and 5-volt reference circuits.

Multiple DTCs, B3666 and B3671 can set

1. If the 5-volt reference circuit is shorted to voltage
2. If the 5-volt reference circuit is shorted to ground
3. If the position sensor ground circuit is open

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

1. 3: This step tests for the proper operation of the circuit in the low count range.
2. 4: This step tests for the proper operation of the circuit in the count range. If the fuse in the jumper opens when you perform this test, the signal circuit is shorted to ground.
3. 5: This step tests for a short to voltage in the 5-volt reference circuit.
4. 6: This step tests for a high resistance or an open in the ground circuit.
5. 16: This step verifies the repair.

DTC B3665

The folding top control (FTC) module supplies a 5-volt reference and low reference circuit to the rear tonneau position sensor. The position sensor sends a voltage signal that varies with the movement of the rear tonneau panel through the signal circuit to the FTC module. Then based on this voltage signal, parameters are converted and displayed as counts, the FTC module determines the position of the rear tonneau and continues with the operating sequence.

The diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B3666 Rear Tonneau Position Error

The FTC module must be powered and can not have B1327 or B1328 set as active DTCs for this DTC to set.

If the FTC module sees the analog input from this position sensor as either lower than 0.25 volts (12 counts or less) or higher than 4.75 volts (242 counts or above), the position sensor will be considered out of range and the FTC module will set this DTC.

1. The FTC module disables all folding top functions.
2. If the condition occurs during operation of the folding top, once the top control switch is released, the FTC module will send a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC), displaying: TOP NOT SECURE.

2. 4: This step tests for the proper operation of the circuit in the count range. If the fuse in the jumper opens when you perform this test, the signal circuit is shorted to ground.
3. 5: This step tests for a short to voltage in the 5-volt reference circuit.
4. 6: This step tests for a high resistance or an open in the ground circuit.
5. 16: This step verifies the repair.

DTC B3666

The folding top control (FTC) module checks the rear compartment lid (decklid) open switch signal circuit of the rear compartment lid (decklid) open switch, at least once every 300 milliseconds. The FTC module compares the deck lid open signal circuit against the decklid ajar switch, that is sent by class 2 message. As the folding top is starting to operate, the decklid will be released, a class 2 message is sent indicating the decklid ajar switch is ajar. The FTC module will continue to raise the decklid upward until it is fully extended, closing the decklid open switch. The accessory voltage supplied to the decklid open switch will then be applied through the decklid signal circuit to the FTC module. Once this signal is received, the FTC module can continue to cycle the folding top operation.

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B3669 Deck Lid Position Sensor Circuit

The battery voltage is between 9-16 volts.

The FTC module monitors the decklid open switch signal switch and the class 2 message of the decklid ajar switch. A DTC is set if both are active.

1. Stores a current and history DTC B3669 in the FTC module.
2. The folding top operation is suspended.

1. This DTC will clear on the current status after the condition for setting the fault is corrected.
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. History and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the switch may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

DTC B3669

The folding top control (FTC) module monitors the folding top pump motor temperature, checking the temperature once every 300 milliseconds. The FTC module supplies a 5-volt reference and monitors the sensor low reference voltage from the thermistor located in the folding top pump motor. As the pump motor warms up, the thermistor resistance will decrease. The FTC module monitors the voltage drop across the thermistor and uses that to calculate the temperature of the pump motor. When the FTC module detects the temperature to be above the operating range, a DTC will be set.

The diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B3670 Pump Motor Temperature Sensor Circuit

1. The battery voltage is between 9-16 volts.
2. The FTC module is in Accessory, RUN, or RAP.

The FTC module detects that the folding top pump motor temperature is over 95°C (203°F).

1. Stores a current and history DTC B3670 in the FTC module.
2. The folding top operation is suspended.
3. A class 2 message is sent to the driver information center TOP MOTOR OVER TEMP, as the folding top switch is pressed.

1. This DTC will become history once the pump motor temperature is below 90°C (194°F).
2. A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles without a fault present.
3. History and current DTC can be cleared using the scan tool.

The following conditions may cause an intermittent malfunction

1. An intermittent sticking or binding linkage condition can cause excessive current draw resulting in a temperature out of range.
2. The folding top pump motor or thermistor is shorted internally.

If the DTC does not reset after the code is cleared, then the switch may be the intermittent fault. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

DTC B3670

The folding top control (FTC) module supplies a 5-volt reference and low reference circuit to the folding top position sensor. The position sensor sends a voltage signal that varies with the movement of the folding top panel through the signal circuit to the FTC module. Then based on this voltage signal, parameters are converted and displayed as counts, the FTC module determines the position of the folding top and continues with the operating sequence.

The diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC

DTC B3971 Folding Top Position Sensor

The FTC module must be powered and cannot have B1327 or B1328 set as active DTCs for this DTC to set.

If the FTC module sees the analog input from this position sensor as either lower than 0.25 volts (12 Counts or less) or higher than 4.75 volts (242 Counts or above), the position sensor will be considered out of range and the FTC module will set this DTC.

1. The FTC module disables all folding top functions.
2. If the condition occurs during operation of the folding top, once the top control switch is released, the FTC module will send a class 2 message to the driver information center (DIC), displaying TOP NOT SECURE.

The FTC module will clear the DTC as an active malfunction when it sees the analog input from this position sensor as between 0.25 volts (12 counts) and 4.75 volts (242 counts) during one cycle of checking the FTC module inputs.

DTC B3971

Symptoms - Roof

1. Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-dtc-information) in Vehicle DTC Information, before using the Symptom Tables in order to verify that all of the following are true: There are no DTCs set. The control modules can communicate via the serial data link.
2. Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Visual/Physical Inspection

1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the folding top system. Refer to «Checking Aftermarket Accessories»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/body-electrical/#how-to-diagnosis-repair-the-wiring-systems-testing__checking-aftermarket-accessories) in Wiring Systems.
2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
3. Inspect the folding top hydraulic reservoir for the proper fluid level.

Intermittent

Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Symptom List

Refer to a symptom diagnostic procedure from the following list in order to diagnose the symptom

Complete the check list prior to performing the diagnosis

1. Windows are normalized. Refer to «Power Windows Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system) in Doors.
2. Cargo cover installed and secured, closing the luggage barrier limit switch.
3. Valet switch is in OFF position, inactive.
4. Vehicle is in PARK.
5. Press the ignition to ACCY or RUN, with the engine OFF.
6. Hydraulic fluid bypass valve in the operating position, turned clockwise, located above the pump motor.
7. Operating temperature is normal.

If a repair is made to a signal circuit for a fault to ground, test the component of that circuit for proper operation.

Use the scan tool to access the History parameters for the folding top control (FTC) module. The parameters will display the status of the folding top systems last operation.

The number below refer to the step number on the diagnostic table.

1. 3: Verify the status of the power windows. With either window not normalized, may inhibit the folding top operation since it is important to understand their position.

1. 14: Verifying the status of the thermistor sensor circuits may set the DTC B3670. Once the diagnostic procedure is completed use the scan tool to clear any DTCs.

Power Folding Top Inoperative

Complete the check list, prior to performing the diagnosis

1. Windows are normalized. Refer to «Power Windows Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system) in Doors.
2. Cargo cover installed and secured, closing the luggage barrier limit switch.
3. Valet switch is in OFF position, inactive.
4. Vehicle is in PARK.
5. Press the ignition to ACCY or RUN, with the engine OFF.
6. Hydraulic fluid bypass valve in the operating position, turned clockwise, located above the pump motor.
7. Operating temperature is normal.

If a repair is made to a signal circuit for a fault to ground, test the component of that circuit for proper operation.

Using the scan tool to access the History parameters for the folding top control (FTC) module, will display the last status of the items listed.

1. 3: Verify the decklid open switch for proper operation.

Power Folding Top Does Not Open

Complete the check list, prior to performing the diagnosis

2. The cargo cover is installed and secured, closing the luggage barrier limit switch.
3. The valet switch is in the OFF position, inactive.
4. The vehicle is in PARK.
5. Press the ignition to ACCY or RUN, with the engine OFF.
6. The hydraulic fluid bypass valve is in the operating position, turned clockwise, located above the pump motor.
7. The operating temperature is normal.

If a repair is made to a signal circuit for a fault to ground, test the component of that circuit for proper operation.

Using the scan tool to access the History parameters for the folding top control (FTC) module, will display the last status of the items listed.

Power Folding Top Does Not Close

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the console trim plate. Refer to «Console Trim Plate Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector
3. Remove the power folding top switch.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the power folding top switch.
2. Connect the electrical connector
3. Install the console trim plate. Refer to «Console Trim Plate Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gages-and-console) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.

Scheme 32

1. Open the folding top as shown in the illustration. Dimension (A) is 400 mm (15.75 in) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel.
2. Place a protective covering over the interior of the vehicle and the adjacent body panels.
3. Loosen the striker bolt (1).
4. Adjust the striker (3) as necessary. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
5. Remove the protective covering.
6. Close the folding top.
7. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary until the rear folding top latches (1) grasp the striker (2).
8. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
9. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

1. Open the folding top as shown in the illustration. Dimension (A) is 400 mm (15.75 in) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel.
2. Place a protective covering over the interior of the vehicle and the adjacent body panels.
3. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the striker (3) to the link.
4. Remove the striker bolt (1).
5. Remove the striker (3) and the striker sleeve (2) from the link.

1. Use a grease pencil to mark the new striker in the same location as the striker that you are replacing.
2. Install the striker sleeve (2) to the striker (3).
3. Position the striker and the striker sleeve to the link.
4. Install the striker bolt (1). Do NOT tighten.
5. Align the striker (3) to the grease mark on the link. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
6. Remove the protective covering.
7. Close the folding top.
8. Adjust the striker as necessary until the folding top latches (1) grasp the striker (2). Refer to «Folding Top Rear Latch Striker Adjustment»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
9. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
10. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Folding Top Fluid Addition

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Place the folding top in the up position.
3. Open the rear compartment.
4. Lower the rear compartment partition (1).
5. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the rear compartment.
6. Place a protective covering over the rear compartment interior and the adjacent body panels.
7. Place a shop towel around the pump motor to control any hydraulic fluid spillage.
8. Remove the reservoir filler plug (1)
9. Add fluid P/N 89022748 until the fluid level is between the MAXIMUM and the MINIMUM indicator lines on the reservoir.
10. Install the reservoir filler plug (1). Tighten: Tighten the plug to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
11. Remove the shop towel.
12. Remove the protective covering.
13. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
14. Close the rear compartment.
15. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
16. Place the folding top in the up position.
17. Open the rear compartment.
18. Inspect the fluid level and add fluid as necessary. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .
19. Install the support and the carpet over the hydraulic pump.
20. Remove the protective covering.
21. Close the rear compartment.
22. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

1. Place the folding top in the up position.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Disconnect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
4. Lower the rear compartment partition (1).
5. Place a protective covering over the rear compartment interior and the adjacent body panels.
6. Remove the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
7. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the rear compartment.
8. Turn the hydraulic pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
9. Support the rear compartment lid.
10. Remove the 3 electrical connectors (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
11. Remove the 2 electrical connectors (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
12. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors (1) from the folding top control module.
13. Remove the bolts (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket.
14. Lift the pump up and out of the storage compartment and set the pump on the protective covering.
15. Remove the reservoir filler plug (1).
16. Remove the bolts (1) from the pump manifold plate.
17. Disengage the cylinder hoses by pulling straight up on the hoses.
18. Carefully lift up on the manifold plate (1).
19. Remove the hoses by pulling the hoses straight up from the pump. Use a clean shop towel to control any hydraulic fluid leakage.
20. Remove the hydraulic pump from the vehicle.
21. Remove the O-ring (1) from each hose.

1. Install a new O-ring (1) on each cylinder hose.
2. Align the manifold plate bolt holes to the holes on the new pump. This will ensure that the cylinder hoses are placed in the correct port.
3. Align the cylinder hoses into each port and push down until the hoses are seated properly in the hydraulic pump manifold.
4. Install the manifold plate bolts (1). Do NOT tighten.
5. Push down on the manifold plate (1) and verify that all of the cylinder hoses are seated properly. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in)
6. Install the reservoir filler plug (1).
7. Position the hydraulic pump to the mounting location.
8. Apply Loctite® Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
9. Install the bolts (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
10. Connect the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the folding top control module.
11. Install the 2 electrical connectors (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
12. Install the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
13. Add fluid as needed. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .
14. Install the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
15. Remove the protective covering.
16. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
17. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
18. Connect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
19. Remove the rear compartment lid support.
20. Close the rear compartment.
21. Bleed the hydraulic system. Refer to «Folding Top Hydraulic System Bleeding Procedure»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-hydraulic-system-bleeding-procedure) .
22. Inspect the hydraulic system for fluid leaks.
23. Inspect the hydraulic system fluid level and add fluid as needed. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .

Folding Top Hydraulic System Bleeding Procedure

1. Inspect the fluid level and add fluid as necessary. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
4. Inspect the fluid level again and add more fluid as necessary. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .
5. Cycle the folding top under power through 5 complete cycles in both directions. Allow 5 minutes between each cycle.
6. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Opening the Folding Top

1. Park on a level surface and shift the transmission into PARK (P).
2. Keep the vehicle running or in accessory mode.
3. Lower both sun visors.
4. Verify that nothing obstructs the folding hardtop roof. Verify that the rear cargo cover is in place with nothing on top of or in front of the cargo cover. The cargo cover located in the rear compartment to keep cargo from getting in the way of the folding hardtop. The cargo cover must be in place for the top to move. To install the cargo cover, snap the bottom of the cover onto the snaps located on the floor of the rear compartment. Then, swing the cover up and place the pins on each side of the cover into the notches on either side of the rear compartment. A storage compartment is also located in the rear compartment on the passengers side. To access the storage compartment, unsnap the lid. To reinstall the lid, line up the opening in the lid over the snap and push down into place.
5. Turn OFF the valet lockout switch.
6. Push and hold the bottom of the folding hardtop button located on the console behind the shifter lever. The windows will automatically lower and the top will automatically lower into the storage area. A chime will sound when the top has lowered completely.

DIC Warnings and Messages

Under certain conditions, the Driver Information Center (DIC) may display a message regarding the folding hardtop. These messages will appear when a problem is sensed in one of the vehicle's systems. Press RESET to clear the display screen.

DIC messages can be displayed in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Closing the Folding Top

1. Park on a level surface. Shift the transmission into PARK (P).
2. The vehicle must be running or in ACCESSORY mode.
3. Lower both sun visors.
4. Verify that nothing obstructs the folding hardtop roof. Verify that the rear cargo cover is in place with nothing on top of or in front of the cargo cover. The cargo cover located in the rear compartment to keep cargo from getting in the way of the folding hardtop. The cargo cover must be in place for the top to move. To install the cargo cover, snap the bottom of the cover onto the snaps located on the floor of the rear compartment. Then, swing the cover up and place the pins on each side of the cover into the notches on either side of the rear compartment. A storage compartment is also located in the rear compartment on the passengers side. To access the storage compartment, unsnap the lid. To reinstall the lid, line up the opening in the lid over the snap and push down into place.
5. Turn OFF the valet lockout switch.
6. Push and hold the top of the folding hardtop button located behind the shift lever. The windows will automatically lower and the top will raise. A chime will sound when the top has raised completely.

After the top is fully raised, release the folding hardtop button. If you press the button again within 5 seconds, the windows will automatically close.

5. Remove the release actuator from the fuel filler door. Refer to «Fuel Filler Door Release Actuator Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
6. Manually place the folding top in the down position. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
7. Remove the left side seat belt retractor. Refer to «Seat Belt Retractor Replacement - Left Front»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/restraints-control-systems/#seat-belt-system) in Seat Belts.
8. Remove the right side seat belt retractor. Refer to «Seat Belt Retractor Replacement - Right Front»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/restraints-control-systems/#seat-belt-system) in Seat Belts.
9. Remove the ignition lock key transmitter antennas. Refer to «Ignition Lock Key Transmitter Antenna Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system) and to «Ignition Lock Key Transmitter Antenna Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system) in Entertainment.
10. If the vehicle is equipped with a digital radio remove the digital radio receiver. Refer to «Digital Radio Receiver Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-systems) in Entertainment.
11. Open the rear compartment.
12. Remove both of the quarter panels. Refer to «Rear Quarter Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
13. Remove both of the rear compartment frames. Refer to «Rear Compartment Panel Frame Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#collision-repair) in Collision Repair.
14. Measure 5 mm (3/16 in) down from the weatherstrip push pin holes (3).
15. Scribe a section line (4) across the panels as shown.
16. Using a reciprocating saw or equivalent tool, cut through both panels following the section line (4).
17. Remove and save the sectioned part (1) for the installation procedure.
18. Remove the roof support bracket bolt (1).
19. Remove the nuts (1) from the outer roof support bracket.
20. Remove the nuts (3) from the center roof support bracket.
21. Open the fold-over clips (1) on the rear end panel that retain the hydraulic hoses and remove the hoses.
22. Remove the 3 electrical connectors (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
23. Remove the 2 electrical connectors from the hydraulic pump bracket.
24. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors (1) from the folding top control module.
25. Remove the hydraulic pump bracket bolts (1).
26. Lift the hydraulic pump up and out of the storage compartment and set the pump in the rear compartment.
27. Remove the fastener (1) from the retaining bracket that holds the rear mounted door release cable (2).
28. If you will install a new folding top module, proceed to step 35. If you will reinstall the same folding top module, you must first make an angle iron support bar (2) in order to secure the distance between the 2 quarter longitudinal frame supports (1) at the top rear of the roof assembly. The following steps show how to make the support bar.
29. Begin with a piece of angle iron (1) of length (b) 1448 mm (57 in), of width (a) 50x50 mm (2x2 in) with a minimum wall stock (c) of 3 mm (1/8 in).
30. Cut off a section (2) of 80 mm (3 1/8 in) from one flange on both sides of the angle iron (1).
31. Drill 2 holes (1) 10 mm (3/8 in) in the center of the flange that was left full length. Place each hole 12.7 mm (1/2 in) from the outside edge of the flange. The centers of the 2 holes should be 1422 mm (56 in) apart.
32. Place a 6x25 mm bolt (1) in the slots (2) in the rear face of the 2 frame supports.
33. Install the support bar on the bolts in the frame supports.
34. Install a washer and nut on the 2 bolts and tighten.
35. Remove the nuts (1) from the rear roof support bracket.
36. Attach the hydraulic pump to the support bracket with wire ties.
37. Attach any excess slack in the wiring or the hydraulic hoses to the support bracket with wire ties.
38. Select a location to place the folding top module after you have lifted the module from the vehicle.
39. Remove the folding top module from the vehicle. If a hoist is not used, you will require the aid of 6 assistants. Lift the module at each corner.
40. Note the quantity and the location of any shims that my be present at any of the mounting locations.

1. Install the same shims in the original locations.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Position the folding top module to the vehicle and align the front locating pins (1) to the holes (2) in the B-pillars while lowering the module into place.
4. Install the nuts on the folding top module and hand tighten the nuts in the designated sequence. Tighten: Tighten the nuts in the designated sequence to 24 N.m (18 lb ft).
5. Install the roof support bracket bolt (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
6. Cut the tie wraps holding the hydraulic hoses and the electrical wires to the shipping bar.
7. Remove the hydraulic pump from the shipping bar.
8. Remove the shipping bar from the roof module.
9. Position the hydraulic pump to the mounting location.
10. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
11. Install the bolts (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
12. Connect the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the folding top control module.
13. Install the 2 electrical connectors (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
14. Install the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
15. Install the hydraulic hoses in the fold-over clips (1) on the rear end panel. Fold the clips over to retain the hydraulic hoses.
16. Install the fastener (1) to the bracket retaining the rear door release cable (2). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
17. Turn the hydraulic pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
18. Pull the over-center links (1) down to unlock the storage compartment panel.
19. Move the storage compartment panel rearward and up to the stored position. Pull on the center of the panel to maintain even pressure. The rubber bumpers on each corner of the panel will fit against the underside on the rear compartment lid.
20. Push both sides of the over-center links up to lock the storage compartment panel.
21. Push up on the over-center link (1) until the closeout panels start to move.
22. Grasp the compartment closeout panel and pull open with one hand. Use your other hand to assist one of the closeout outer panels to an open position.
23. Remove the wrench located inside the passenger side storage compartment.
24. Reach in from the side of the vehicle and under the top to remove the headliner plug. The plug is located in the center of the top near the front.
25. Insert the wrench into the latch actuator bolt beneath the plug location. Turn the wrench counterclockwise until movement stops, while gently pulling up on the center of the folding top to release the top.
26. Grasp the folding top at the front and at the side. Lift the folding top out of the stored position.
27. Move the folding top towards the windshield header. Be careful not to pinch your fingers between the panels.
28. Place your hands on the folding top and guide the top into the closed position.
29. While sitting in the driver seat, pull down on the rear of the front folding top panel.
30. While holding the rear of the panel down, insert the wrench and turn counterclockwise until movement stops. This will ensure that the latch jaws are fully open.
31. From outside the vehicle, push down on both rear corners of the front folding top panel to ensure that the rear latches are latched.
32. Before applying adhesive, dry fit the body side sectioned part that was removed earlier and test for proper fit and alignment.
33. In order to bond the body side-sectioned part to the vehicle, you will need to create 4 SMC backing plates, which can be made from the original rear compartment frames. Use one plate of each size for each side of the vehicle. Trim the plates as necessary to fit behind the joint. Make 2 backing plates with dimensions of 30x50 mm (1 3/16x2 in). Make 2 backing plates with dimensions of 25x50 mm (1x2 in).
34. Clean and prepare all bonding mating surfaces according to the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.
35. Apply a consistent bead of structural adhesive to the bonding mating surfaces on the backing plates (1,2) and on the vehicle (3). Refer to «Sheet Molded Compound (SMC) Panel Bonding»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#collision-repair__sheet-molded-compound-smc-panel-bonding) in Collision Repair.
36. Clamp the backing plates in place and allow to dry according to the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.
37. Remove excess adhesive.
38. Temporarily install the body side-sectioned part (1) that was removed earlier and test for proper fit and alignment.
39. Remove the body side sectioned part (1).
40. Apply a consistent bead of structural adhesive to the bonding mating surfaces of the backing plates (2,4) and to both sides of the section joint (3). Refer to «Sheet Molded Compound (SMC) Panel Bonding»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#collision-repair__sheet-molded-compound-smc-panel-bonding) in Collision Repair.
41. Clamp in place and allow to dry according to the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.
42. Remove the excess adhesive.
43. Install both of the rear compartment frames. Refer to «Rear Compartment Panel Frame Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#collision-repair) in Collision Repair.
44. Install both of the quarter panels. Refer to «Rear Quarter Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
45. If the vehicle is equipped with a digital radio install the digital radio receiver. Refer to «Digital Radio Receiver Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-systems) in Entertainment.
46. Install the ignition lock key transmitter antennas. Power Folding Top Learn

In order to control the moving sequence of the folding top system, the folding top control (FTC) module uses the upper and lower limits of the position sensors as well as the current known position. Learn the sensors using the following procedure if the system has been repaired or components have been replaced.

Complete the window normalization and folding top position procedures prior to performing the folding top learn procedure.

1. Window Normalization: The driver and passenger windows must be normalized. Using the scan tool, observe the parameter for the Window Normalization for both the driver door module (DDM) and the passenger door module (PDM). If the windows are not normalized, perform the «Power Window Reinitialization»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system__power-window-reinitialization) in Doors.
2. Folding Top Position: The folding top system will need to be in the fully closed or open position, refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) . If the folding top system is in the open position and the header latch is unlatched, access the header latch by manually moving the folding top to the closed position. Use the scan tool to verify the status of the Header Latch Limit Switches.

Folding Top Learn Procedure

Using the scan tool, navigate to Vehicle Control Systems, Computer Integrating Systems, Module Replacement/Setup, then select FTC. From this menu, select Folding Top Learn Procedure.

Follow the steps below

1. Manually move and secure the folding top either in the open or closed position. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
2. Verify that the bypass valve at the pump motor is in the operating position by turning the valve clockwise.
3. Verify that the cargo cover is in place.
4. Close the decklid and confirm that the top is in either the open or the closed position.
5. Verify that the valet switch, located inside the instrument panel (I/P) compartment, is in the OFF position.
6. Place vehicle in PARK.
7. Turn the ignition to the RUN position.
8. Press the Calibrate soft key on the scan tool to start the learn procedure.
9. Press and hold the folding top control switch until the top has completed the open or close cycle.
10. Press and hold the folding top control switch in the opposite direction until the top has completed that cycle.

If any of the sensor parameters indicate Not Learned, repeat the folding top learn procedure. Verify that the learn procedure has been completed successfully by operating the folding top. Refer to Power Folding Top Description and Operation .

1. Place the folding top in the coupe position.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Disconnect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
4. Lower the rear compartment partition (1).
5. Place a protective covering over the rear compartment interior and the adjacent body panels.
6. Remove the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) .
7. Remove 3 electrical connectors (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
8. Remove 2 electrical connectors (1) from the pump bracket (2).
9. Disconnect 3 electrical connectors (1) from the folding top control module.
10. Remove the bolts (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket.
11. Lift the pump up and out of the storage compartment and set the pump in the rear compartment on the protective covering.
12. Remove the screws (1) from the folding top control module (2).
13. Remove the control module.

1. Position the folding top control module (2) to the pump bracket.
2. Install the screws (1) to the folding top control module. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
3. Position the hydraulic pump to the mounting location.
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. Install the bolts (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
6. Connect the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the control module.
7. Install the 2 electrical connectors (1) to the pump bracket (2).
8. Install the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the pump bracket (2).
9. Install the side component trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) .
10. Remove the protective covering.
11. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
12. Connect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
13. Close the rear compartment.
14. Perform the Folding Top Learn Procedure. Refer to «Power Folding Top Learn»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__power-folding-top-learn) .
15. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

The distance (A) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel is 400 mm (15.75 in).
2. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
3. Remove the trim cover (1).
4. Release the electrical connector (2) from the trim cover (1).
5. Disconnect the potentiometer electrical connector (3).
6. Remove the potentiometer screw (1).
7. Remove the potentiometer (2) from the link (3).

1. The potentiometer service kit contains one potentiometer (2) and 3 electrical connector retainer clips (1). Find and install the retainer clip that matches the clip on the potentiometer that you are replacing.
2. Position the potentiometer (3) to the link (1). Align the D-shaped rotor into the D-shaped hole (2) in the link.
3. Rotate the potentiometer until the screw hole in the potentiometer is aligned with the screw hole in the link (4).
4. Install the potentiometer screw (1). Tighten: Tighten the screw to 3.5 N.m (31 lb in).
5. Connect the potentiometer electrical connector (3).
6. Clip the electrical connector (2) to the trim cover (1) in the original location.
7. Install the trim cover (1).
8. Remove the protective covering.
9. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
10. Calibrate the folding top. Refer to «Power Folding Top Learn»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__power-folding-top-learn) .
11. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

6. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the bolts to the link on the folding top panel.
7. With the aid of an assistant, remove the bolts (1) from the folding top panel (2). Remove the folding top panel.
8. Note the number and the location of any shims (3) that may be present.

Disassembly Procedure

1. Remove the location pins. Refer to «Folding Top Front Locating Pin Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
2. Remove the weatherstrips. Refer to «Folding Top Side Front Weatherstrip Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Assembly Procedure

1. Install the weatherstrip retainers. Refer to «Folding Top Side Front Weatherstrip Retainer Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
2. Install the weatherstrips. Refer to «Folding Top Side Front Weatherstrip Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
3. Install the location pins. Refer to «Folding Top Front Locating Pin Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

1. With the aid of an assistant, position the folding top panel (2) to the vehicle.
2. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
3. Install the folding top panel bolts (1). Do NOT tighten.
4. Install the same shims (3) in the original locations.
5. Align the folding top panel bolts to the grease marks on the link. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
6. Install the retainers holding the hydraulic cylinder hoses and the electrical wires to the folding top panel.
7. Install the latch. Refer to «Folding Top Front Latch Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
8. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
9. Verify that the folding top panel is properly aligned. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
10. Adjust the folding top panel if necessary. Refer to «Folding Top Front Panel Adjustment»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-front-panel-adjustment) .
11. Remove the protective covering.
12. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.

Fore/Aft and Cross Car Adjustment Procedure

The distance (A) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel is 400 mm (15.75 in).

4. Loosen the bolts (1) from the folding top panel.
5. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
6. Adjust the panel as necessary. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
7. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
8. Verify that the folding top panel is aligned properly. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
9. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary. If you cannot align the folding top panel using this procedure, adjust the locating pins. 10. Remove the protective covering.

3. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the bolts (1) to the upper pivot link bracket (2).
4. With the aid of an assistant supporting the position of the folding top, loosen the bolts (1).
5. With the aid of an assistant, adjust the rear panel position relative to the upper pivot link bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
6. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
7. Adjust the folding top location pins as necessary. Refer to «Folding Top Front Locating Pin Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

4. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift the retainer clip (1) on the lower pivot link bracket side (2) of the strut actuator.
5. Remove the strut actuator (1) from the ball joint on the lower pivot link bracket (2).
6. Remove the front panel link trim from the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Front Panel Link Trim Cover Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) in Interior Trim.

11. Remove the spring clip (2) from the quarter window adjuster pin (1).
12. Remove the pin (1) from the quarter window adjuster (2).
13. Remove the quarter window adjuster (1) from the lower pivot link bracket (2). Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the tie wraps holding the hydraulic hoses and the electrical wires to the link.
14. Remove the idler link spring clip (1).
15. Remove the idler link pin (2).
16. Remove the bracket bolt (1) from the lower pivot link. Because of tight clearance conditions (2) you need not remove the bolt completely from the vehicle.
17. Remove the lower pivot link bracket from the vehicle.
18. Support the link to prevent the link from swinging down when you remove the hold-down link from the folding top panel.
19. Remove the hold-down link. Refer to «Folding Top Panel Hold Down Link Replacement - Front»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
20. Remove the folding top panel link from the vehicle.

1. Position the folding top panel link to the vehicle.
2. Install the hold-down link. Refer to «Folding Top Panel Hold Down Link Replacement - Front»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
3. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
4. Position the lower pivot link bracket to the vehicle. Secure with the bracket bolt (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 36 N.m (27 lb ft).
5. Install the idler link pin (2).
6. Install the idler link spring clip (1).
7. Secure the hydraulic hoses and the electrical wires to the link with new tie wraps in the original locations indicated by the grease marks.
8. Install the rear folding top panel. Refer to «Folding Top Rear Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
9. Install the front folding top panel. Refer to «Folding Top Front Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
10. Install the quarter window adjuster (1) to the pivot link bracket (2).
11. Install the pin (1) to the quarter window adjuster (2).
12. Install the spring clip (2) to the quarter window adjuster pin (1).
13. Install the folding top quarter window. Refer to «Folding Top Quarter Window Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

16. Manually move the folding top as shown in the illustration. Dimension (A) is 430 mm (17 in) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel.
17. Install the strut actuator (1) to the ball joint on the lower pivot link bracket (2).
18. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
19. Verify that the folding top panels are aligned properly. If necessary adjust the folding top panels. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
20. Remove the protective covering.
21. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.

7. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the folding top panel bolts (1) to the lower pivot link bracket (3).
8. With the aid of an assistant, remove the bolts (1) from the folding top panel.
9. Note the number and location of any shims (2).
10. With the aid of an assistant remove the folding top panel (1).

1. With the aid of an assistant, position the folding top panel (1) to the vehicle.
2. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
3. Install the bolts (1) to the upper pivot link bracket (2). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. Install the bolts (1) to the lower pivot link bracket (3). Do NOT tighten the bolts.
6. Install the same shims (2) in the original locations.
7. Align the folding top panel bolts to the grease marks on the lower pivot link bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).

11. Remove the protective covering.
12. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.

6. Adjust the panel as necessary. Tighten the bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).

4. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift the retainer clip (1) on the lower pivot link bracket side of the strut actuator.
5. Remove the strut actuator from the ball joint (2) on the lower pivot link bracket.
6. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift up on the retainer clip (3) on the folding top support bracket side of the strut actuator.
7. Remove the strut actuator from the ball joint (4) on the support bracket.
8. Remove the strut actuator from the vehicle.

1. Install the strut actuator (3) to the ball joint (4) on the folding top support bracket.
2. Install the strut actuator (1) to the ball joint (2) on the lower pivot link bracket.
3. Remove the protective covering.

6. Slightly pull down on the rear compartment lid and remove the travel limit screw (1) from the link.
7. Support the rear compartment lid.
8. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift up on the retainer clip on the link side of the strut actuator.
9. While pushing up on the rear compartment lid, remove the strut actuator (2) from the ball joint (1) on the link.
10. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift up the retainer clip on the folding top support bracket side of the strut actuator.
11. Remove the strut actuator (1) from the ball joint (2) on the folding top support bracket.
12. Remove the strut actuator from the vehicle.

1. Install the strut actuator (1) to the ball joint (2) on the folding top support bracket.
2. Slightly pull down on the rear compartment lid and install the strut actuator (2) to the ball joint (1) on the link.
3. Remove the support from the rear compartment lid.
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. While pushing up on the rear compartment lid, install the travel limit screw (1) to the link. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 4 N.m (35 lb in).
6. Install the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
7. Remove the protective covering.
8. Raise the rear compartment partition (1)
9. Close the rear compartment.

5. Remove the spring-clip (3) from the cylinder retainer cover.
6. Remove the cylinder retainer cover (2). Pull the retainer cover down off the mounting pin and slide the cover forward.
7. Remove the cylinder and actuator arm (1) from the latch.

1. Ensure that the ignition switch is in the OFF position and that the folding top has not been operated under power for at least 6 minutes.
2. Remove the reservoir filler plug (1)
3. Using a small flat-bladed tool, release the retainer clip (1) from one of the cylinder hoses.
4. Remove the cylinder hose retainer clip (1).
5. Remove the cylinder hose (1). Use a clean shop towel to control any hydraulic fluid leakage.
6. Remove the cylinder hose O-ring (1).
7. Using a small flat-bladed tool, release one of the port plug retainer clips from the replacement cylinder.
8. Remove the retainer clips from the replacement cylinder.
9. Remove the port plug from the replacement cylinder.
10. Remove the port plug O-ring from the replacement cylinder.

1. Install a new O-ring (1) onto the cylinder hose (2).
2. Install the hose (2) into the cylinder port (3). Press down on the hose until the hose is fully seated in the cylinder.
3. Install anew cylinder hose retainer clip (1). Inspect the retainer clip to ensure that the clip is fully seated around the hose (2).
4. Repeat this procedure for the other hose.
5. Install the reservoir filler plug (1).

1. Install the cylinder and actuator arm (1) to the latch.
2. Install the cylinder retainer cover (2).
3. Install the spring-clip (3) to the cylinder retainer cover.
4. Install the C-clip (4) to the latch actuator shaft.

3. Lower the rear compartment partition (1).
4. Lower the closeout curtain.
5. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
6. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the rear compartment.
7. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
8. Remove floor panel storage from the rear compartment. Refer to «Body Rear Compartment Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) in Interior Trim.
9. Push up on the over-center link (1) until the closeout panels start to move.
10. Grasp the compartment closeout panel and pull the panel open with one hand, while using your other hand to assist one of the outer panels to an open position.
11. Remove the spring-clip (2) from the cylinder retainer pin (1).
12. Remove the cylinder retainer pin (1).
13. Remove the cylinder retainer spring-clip (1).
14. Remove the cylinder (1) from the link (2).

9. Locate the cylinder (1).
10. Remove the bolts (1) from the cylinder retainer plate.
11. Pull the cylinder retainer plate (1) out until the plate contacts the idler lower pivot bracket (2).
12. Pull the retainer plate (1) and the cylinder (3) towards the rear of the vehicle until you have enough room to remove the retainer plate (1) from the cylinder (3).
13. Remove the spring clip (1) from the cylinder mounting pin.
14. Loosen the bolts (1) to the hold-down link. Do NOT remove the bolts.
15. Remove the shoulder bolt (2) from the folding top panel link.
16. Remove the push pin retainers (1).
17. Remove the retainer straps holding the cylinder hoses (2) in place.
18. Pull down on the rear folding top panel until the cylinder (1) is centered over the hose channel. Move the cylinder hoses to the edges of the hose channel before removing the cylinder.
19. Slide the cylinder off of the mounting pin.
20. Remove the cylinder.

5. Install the shoulder bolt (2) to the folding top panel link. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 36 N.m (27 lb ft).
6. Tighten the bolts (1) to the hold-down link. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
7. Install the cylinder retainer plate (1) into the hydraulic cylinder (3).
8. Push the retainer plate and the cylinder towards the front of the vehicle until the pivot pin on the retainer plate is aligned with the hole in the folding top support bracket.
9. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
10. Install the bolts (1) to the cylinder retainer plate. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
11. Install the retainer straps (2).
12. Install the push pin retainers (1).
13. Position the folding top as shown in the illustration. The distance (A) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel is 430 mm (17 in).
14. Install the strut actuator (1) to the ball joint on the lower pivot link bracket (2).

5. Remove the cylinder hose (1). Use a clean shop towel to control any hydraulic fluid leakage.
6. Remove the cylinder hose O-ring (1).
7. Using a small flat-bladed tool, release one of the port plug retainer clips from the replacement cylinder.
8. Remove the retainer clips from the replacement cylinder.
9. Remove the port plug from the replacement cylinder.
10. Remove the port plug O-ring from the replacement cylinder.
11. Install a new O-ring (1) onto the cylinder hose (2).
12. Install the hose (2) into the cylinder port (3). Press down on the hose until the hose is fully seated in the cylinder.
13. Install a new cylinder hose retainer clip (1). Inspect the retainer clip to ensure that the clip is fully seated around the hose (2).
14. Repeat this procedure for the other hose.
15. Install the reservoir filler plug (1).

1. Install the cylinder to the link.
2. Install the lower cylinder retainer pin (2).
3. Install the lower cylinder retainer spring-clip (1).
4. Install the upper cylinder retainer pin (2).
5. Install the spring-clip to the upper cylinder retainer pin.
6. Install the side component trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
7. Remove the protective covering.
8. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
9. Install the support and the carpet over the hydraulic pump.
10. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
11. Close the rear compartment.
12. Bleed the hydraulic system. Refer to «Folding Top Hydraulic System Bleeding Procedure»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-hydraulic-system-bleeding-procedure) .
13. Inspect the hydraulic system for fluid leaks.
14. Inspect the fluid level of the hydraulic system and add fluid as needed. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .
15. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Replacement Procedure

1. Place the folding top in the up position.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Disconnect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
4. Lower the rear compartment partition (1).
5. Place a protective cover over the rear compartment interior and the adjacent body panels.
6. Remove the side compartment trim cover. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
7. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the rear compartment.
8. Turn the hydraulic pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
9. Support the rear compartment lid.
10. Remove the 3 electrical connectors (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
11. Remove the 2 electrical connectors (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
12. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors (1) from the folding top control module.
13. Remove the bolts (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket.
14. Lift the pump up and out of the storage compartment and set the pump on the protective covering.
15. Remove the hydraulic cylinder from the mounting location. Do NOT remove the hoses from the cylinder at this time. 16. Remove the reservoir filler plug (1).
17. Remove the bolts (1) from the pump manifold plate.
18. Disengage the 4 large cylinder hoses (41,42,43,44) by pulling straight up on the hoses.
19. Carefully lift up on the manifold plate (1).
20. Locate the pair of cylinder hoses that need replacement. Refer to «Folding Top Hydraulic Cylinder Hose Identification»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
21. For each set of hoses being replaced, remove one hose by pulling straight up from the pump. Use a clean shop towel to control any hydraulic fluid leakage.
22. Push the hose back through the manifold plate.
23. Remove the hose retaining ring (1).
24. Remove the hose (1) from the manifold plate (2).
25. Push the manifold end of the new hose (1) through the manifold plate (2).
26. Using the BO-47666 , install a new hose-retaining ring onto the hoses. See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__special-tools) .
27. Push the assembly cone (2) over the end of the hose (1) until the cone is fully seated.
28. Install the retaining ring (2) onto the assembly cone (1).
29. Using the BO-47666 (2), push the retaining ring (1) into place. See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__special-tools) .
30. Remove the assembly cone (1).
31. Repeat the replacement procedure for the second hose.
32. Install a new O-ring (1) on each cylinder hose that you removed from the pump manifold.
33. Align the manifold plate bolt holes to the holes on the pump. This will ensure that the cylinder hoses are placed in the correct port.
34. Align the cylinder hoses into each port and push down until the hoses are seated properly in the hydraulic pump manifold.
35. Install the manifold plate bolts (1). Do NOT tighten.
36. Push down on the manifold plate (1) and verify that all of the cylinder hoses are seated properly. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
37. Route the new hose set to the cylinder in the same way as the set being replaced.
38. Depending on the hose set, you may have to remove and replace the following components: The tie wraps The P-clips The wire loom The conduit
39. Use a small flat-bladed tool to release the retainer clip (1) from one of the cylinder hoses.
40. Remove the retainer clip (1).
41. Remove the cylinder hose (1). Use a clean shop towel to control any hydraulic fluid leakage.
42. Remove the cylinder hose O-ring (1) from the cylinder.
43. Install a new O-ring (1) onto the cylinder hose (2).
44. Install the hose into the cylinder port (3). Press straight down on the hose until the hose is fully seated in the cylinder.
45. Install a new cylinder hose retainer clip (1). Inspect the retainer clip to ensure that the clip is fully seated around the hose (2).
46. Repeat the replacement procedure for the second hose.
47. Install the appropriate hydraulic cylinder to the mounting location. 48. Install the reservoir filler plug (1).
49. Position the hydraulic pump to the correct mounting location.
50. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bracket bolts (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
51. Connect the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the folding top control module.
52. Install the 2 electrical connectors (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
53. Install the 3 electrical connectors (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket (2).
54. Install the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
55. Remove the protective covering.
56. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
57. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
58. Connect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
59. Remove the rear compartment lid support.
60. Close the rear compartment.

62. Inspect the hydraulic system for fluid leaks.

1. Manually open the folding top as shown in the illustration. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) . The distance (A) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel is 430 mm (17 in).
2. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
3. Remove the rear window garnish molding. Refer to «Rear Window Garnish Molding Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) in Interior Trim.
4. Remove the rear quarter trim panel. Refer to «Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) in Interior Trim.
5. With the aid of an assistant, support the folding top front roof panel to prevent the panel from swinging down when you remove the bolts.
6. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the folding top panel bolts (1) to the upper pivot link bracket (2).
7. Remove the bolts (1) from the folding top panel.
8. Note the number and the location of any shims.
9. Remove the bolt (1) from the upper pivot link bracket (2).
10. Remove the upper pivot link bracket from the vehicle.

1. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
2. Position the upper pivot link bracket (2) to the vehicle and install the bolt (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
3. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
4. Install the bolts (1) to the folding top panel. Do NOT tighten.
5. Install the shims in the original locations.
6. Align the folding top panel bolts (1) to the grease marks on the upper pivot link bracket (2). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
7. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
8. Verify that the folding top panel is aligned properly. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
9. Adjust the folding top panel, if necessary. Refer to «Folding Top Rear Panel Adjustment»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-rear-panel-adjustment) .
10. Remove the protective covering.
11. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
12. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
13. Install the rear quarter trim panel. Refer to «Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) in Interior Trim.
14. Install the rear window garnish molding. Refer to «Rear Window Garnish Molding Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) in Interior Trim.

2. Place a protective covering over the interior of the vehicle and the adjacent body panels.
3. Remove the spring clip (2) from the quarter window adjuster pin (1).
4. Remove the pin (1) from the quarter window adjuster (2).
5. Remove the adjuster (1) from the lower pivot link bracket (2).
6. With the aid of an assistant, remove the strut actuator: Support the folding top to prevent the top from moving. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift up on the retainer clip (1) on the lower pivot link bracket (2) side of the strut actuator. NOTE: Apply pressure only at the end of the strut actuator that you are removing or attaching. DO NOT apply pressure to the middle of the rod because damage or bending will result. Remove the strut actuator (1) from the ball joint on the lower pivot link bracket (2).
7. Position the folding top panel so that the panel is resting unlatched on the windshield header, with the locating pins in the receivers.
8. Remove the idler link spring clip (1).
9. Remove the idler link pin (2).
10. Support the folding top panel.
11. Remove the lower pivot link bracket bolt (1). Because of tight clearance conditions (2), you need not remove the bolt completely from the vehicle.
12. Using a grease pencil, mark the locations of the folding top panel bolts (1) to the lower pivot link bracket (3).
13. Remove the bolts (1).
14. Note the number and the location of any shims (2) that may be present.
15. Remove the lower pivot link bracket from the vehicle.

1. Position the lower pivot link bracket to the vehicle.
2. Install the folding top panel bolts (1). Do NOT tighten the bolts.
3. Install the idler link pin (2).
4. Install the idler link spring clip (1).
5. Tighten the bracket bolt (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 36 N.m (27 lb ft).
6. Install the same shims (2) in the original locations.
7. Align the folding top panel bolts (1) to the grease marks on the lower pivot link bracket (3). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
8. Remove the support from the folding top panel.
9. Manually move the folding top as shown in the illustration. Dimension (A) is 430 mm (17 in) from the windshield header to the leading edge of the folding top panel.
10. Install the strut actuator (1) to the ball joint on the lower pivot link bracket (2).
11. Install the quarter window adjuster (1) to the bracket (2).
12. Install the adjuster pin (1).
13. Install the adjuster spring clip (2).
14. Manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

2. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
3. Remove the weatherstrip retainer screws (1).
4. Remove the push pin retainers (1). One of the retainers is located beneath the weatherstrip lip (2).
5. Pull the bottom of the upper weatherstrip leg to remove the weatherstrip from the folding top panel.
6. Ensure that the retainer clips (1) have stayed attached to the upper weatherstrip leg (2). If the clips have stayed in the folding top panel, remove the clips and install the clips in the weatherstrip.
7. Pull the upper weatherstrip off of the folding top panel flange.
8. Remove the weatherstrip from the vehicle.

1. Position the weatherstrip to the vehicle.
2. Install the corners of the weatherstrip (1) to the folding top panel flange (2).
3. Install the remainder of the weatherstrip to the folding top panel above the rear window. Work the weatherstrip from the corners to the center on the vehicle, ensuring that the seal flange (1) is seated behind the rear window (2). Gently use a rubber mallet to ensure full engagement of the weatherstrip to the flange.
4. Install the push pin retainers (1).
5. Ensure that the lower weatherstrip (2) is seated between the folding top panel (1) and the weatherstrip leg (3).
6. Install the bottom of the weatherstrip leg to the folding top panel.
7. Install the remainder of the weatherstrip leg to the folding top panel (2), using a fiber stick (1) to push the secondary seal (3) behind the panel.
8. Install the weatherstrip retainer screws (1). Tighten: Tighten the screws to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
9. Remove the protective covering.
10. Operate the folding top under power through one complete cycle in each direction.

2. Install the weatherstrip retainer screws. Do NOT tighten.
3. Alignment the weatherstrip retainer to the marks on the panel. Tighten: Tighten the retainer screws to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
4. Install the weatherstrip into the retainer. Refer to «Folding Top Side Front Weatherstrip Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
5. Remove the protective covering.

7. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.

4. Remove the C-clip (4) from the latch actuator shaft.
5. Remove the spring clip (3) from the hydraulic cylinder mounting pin.
6. Remove the retainer cover (2). Pull the retainer cover down off the mounting pin and slide forward.
7. Remove the hydraulic cylinder and the actuator arm from the latch (1).
8. Cut the tie wraps holding the hydraulic cylinder lines and the electrical wires to the upper roof panel.

2. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
3. Install the bolts (1) to the folding top latch. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).
4. Install the rear latch hook and cable (2) to the hinge (1).
5. Install the rear latch hook snap-ring (1) to the hinge.
6. Connect the electrical connectors to the position sensor switches.
7. Install the hydraulic cylinder and the actuator arm to the latch (1).
8. Install the hydraulic cylinder retainer cover (2).
9. Install the spring-clip (3) to the hydraulic cylinder retainer cover.
10. Install the C-clip (4) to the latch actuator shaft.
11. Secure the hydraulic cylinder lines to the folding top panel with new tie wraps.
12. Remove the protective covering.

14. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.

7. Remove the hydraulic cylinder and the actuator arm from the latch (1).
8. Cut the tie wraps holding the hydraulic cylinder lines and the electrical wires to the upper roof panel.
9. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the position sensor switch.

12. Remove the retainer clip (1) from the position sensor switch.
13. Remove the position sensor switch (1) from the latch (2).

4. Position the folding top latch (2) to the vehicle as rearward as possible. Install the bolts (1) to the folding top latch. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).

2. Remove the travel limit C-clip (1) from the pin (2).
3. Remove the pin (2) from the latch.
4. Open the latch arms until the pulley wheel pin aligns with the access hole in the latch.
5. Push the pulley wheel pin (1) through the latch access holes (2).
6. Remove the pulley wheel (1) from the latch.
7. Remove the cable from the latch retainer slot.

1. Install the right side cable sheathing to the right side latch retainer slot.
2. Push the bare cable into the latch. Provide enough slack so that you can install the pulley wheel without cable interference.
3. Install the pulley wheel (1) in the latch and align the wheel with the latch access holes.
4. Install the pulley wheel pin (1) through the latch access hole (2) and the pulley wheel.
5. Close the latch so that the pulley wheel pin is not visible through the access holes.
6. Install the travel limit C-clip pin (2) to the latch.
7. Install the travel limit C-clip (1) to the pin (2).
8. Insert the left side cable sheathing to the left side latch retainer slot.

Adjustment Procedure

The main function of the folding top latch cable is to override the return spring, depending on the starting position of the top. During opening or closing, if the latches do NOT fully disengage from the eccentric pins or from the rear top support bracket, increase the cable tension.

If the top is in the up position, the rear folding top latches (1) grasp the eccentric pin (2) on the link.

11. On the right side only, do NOT pull the string (2) through the windshield header. Remove the string from the electrical connector (1) and tape the string to the windshield header.

1. On the right side only, attach the string (2) to the electrical connector (1) to aid in routing the wire through the windshield header.
2. Position the locating pin receiver (2) to the windshield.
3. On the right side only, pull the string to route the wire through the windshield header.
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. Install the locating pin receiver bolts (1) loosely so that the receiver can still be moved with slight effort.
6. Install the same shims (3) in the original locations.
7. On the right side only, connect the electrical connector (1) to the position sensor switch (2).
8. Stand on the opposite side of the vehicle from where the locating pin receiver was replaced and manually close the folding top. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

4. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the trunk.
5. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.

7. Push up on the over center link (1) until the closeout panel starts to move.
8. Grasp the compartment closeout panel and pull open with one hand. Use your other hand to assist one of the closeout outer panels to an open position.
9. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the bolts (2) to the closeout panel hinge (3).
10. Remove the closeout panel bolts.
11. Remove the closeout panel (1) from the vehicle.

1. Position the closeout panel (3) in place.
2. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
3. Install the closeout panel bolts (2) by hand. Do NOT tighten.
4. Align the bolts (2) to the marks on the closeout panel hinge (3). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).
5. Grasp the compartment closeout panel and push closed with one hand. Use your other hand to assist one of the closeout outer panels to a closed position.
6. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
7. Close the rear compartment.
8. Remove the protective covering.
9. Install the support and the carpet over the hydraulic pump.

9. Loosen the hinge bolts (2) and the bumpers (3) on the compartment closeout panel hinge.
10. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
11. Adjust the closeout panel as necessary. Tighten: Tighten the hinge bolts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
12. Grasp the closeout panel and push closed with one hand. Use your other hand to assist one of the closeout outer panels to a closed position.
13. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
14. Remove the protective covering.

15. Turn the drive rod turnbuckle as necessary to adjust the closeout panel: Turn the turnbuckle clockwise to adjust the panel downward. Turn the turnbuckle counterclockwise to adjust the panel upward.
16. While holding the drive rod turnbuckle (2), tighten both of the drive rod jam nuts (1). Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 6 N.m (53 lb in).

7. Remove the spring clip (1) from the hydraulic cylinder retainer pin.
8. Remove the retainer pin (1).

11. Using a grease pencil, mark the location of the bolts (1) to the support bracket.
12. Remove the outboard link bolts (1).
13. Loosen the center link nuts (1).
14. Remove the link (2) from the vehicle.
15. Note the number and the location of any shims.

1. Position the link to the vehicle. Hand start the bolts (1). Do NOT tighten.
2. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.

4. Install the shims in the same locations.
5. Pull the link (2) forward until the slots are seated against the studs. Install the center link nuts (1). Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
6. Position the hydraulic cylinder (2) to the folding top support bracket (1).
7. Install the spring clip (1) to the hydraulic cylinder.
8. Install the retainer pin (1) to the hydraulic cylinder.
9. Install the spring clip (2) to the retainer pin (1).

11. Install both of the drive rods to the center compartment closeout panel.

16. Remove the protective covering.

4. Remove the lower rear adjustment screw (1) from the receiver support.
5. Remove the receiver support from the vehicle

1. Position the receiver support to the vehicle.
2. Loosely install the lower rear adjustment screw (1) to the receiver support.
3. Position the front outer closeout panel guide pin receiver to the receiver support.
4. Loosely install the remaining screws (1) to the receiver.
5. Lift the front of the receiver support upward to the full up position.
6. Tighten all screws until fully seated.

7. Remove the hinge bolts (2).
8. Remove the hinge from the vehicle.

1. Position the closeout panel hinge to the vehicle.
2. Loosely install the hinge bolts (2). Do NOT tighten.
3. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
4. Align the bolts to the alignment marks on the hinge. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
5. Loosely install the hinge bumpers (3). Do NOT tighten the bumper nuts.
6. Adjust the bumpers to the same distance from the hinge that you recorded earlier. Tighten: Tighten the bumper jam nuts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
7. Install the drive rods to the hinge.

5. Turn the bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
6. Locate the potentiometer (1).
7. Disconnect the potentiometer electrical connector (1) from the link (2).
8. Disconnect the electrical connector.
9. Remove the potentiometer screw (1).
10. Remove the potentiometer (2) from the link (3).

1. The potentiometer service kit contains one potentiometer (2) and 3 electrical connector retainer clips (1). Find and install the retainer clip that matches the clip on the potentiometer that you are replacing.
2. Position the potentiometer (1) to the link (3). Align the D-shaped rotor into the D-shaped hole (4) in the link.
3. Rotate the potentiometer until the screw holes (2) are aligned.
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. Install the potentiometer screw (1). Tighten: Tighten the screw to 3.5 N.m (31 lb in).
6. Connect the potentiometer electrical connector (1).
7. Clip the electrical connector to the link (2) in the original location.
8. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
9. Remove the protective covering.
10. Install the support and the carpet over the hydraulic pump.
11. Close the rear compartment.
12. Calibrate the folding top. Refer to «Power Folding Top Learn»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__power-folding-top-learn) .
13. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

1. Place the folding top in the up position.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Disconnect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
4. Lower the rear compartment partition (1).
5. Place a protective covering over the rear compartment interior and the adjacent body panels.
6. Remove the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
7. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the rear compartment.
8. Turn the hydraulic pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
9. When replacing the left side, perform the following steps. Skip these steps for the right side: Remove the bolts (1) from the hydraulic pump bracket. Set the pump on the storage compartment floor.
10. Remove the spring-clip (1) from the upper compartment lid hydraulic cylinder retainer pin.
11. Remove the upper cylinder retainer pin (2).
12. Remove the spring-clip (1) from the lower compartment lid hydraulic cylinder retainer.
13. Remove the lower cylinder retainer pin (2).
14. Leaving the hydraulic hoses attached, remove the cylinder from the original position. Set the cylinder aside in a safe place.
15. Remove the compartment lid strut actuator. Refer to «Folding Top Compartment Lid Strut Actuator Replacement - Rear»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
16. Using a light colored grease pencil, mark the sound deadener mat on the wheelhouse along the inboard edge of the quarter inner longitudinal support frame. This mark will be used to verify that the frame has not shifted when the support is removed.
17. Remove the bolts (1) and nuts (2) securing the quarter inner frame support bracket to the longitudinal support frame.
18. Place the shims (1), as required, between the bottom surface of the longitudinal support frame and the wheelhouse mat. The shims should support the frame at the current elevation, but not lift the frame off the wheelhouse.
19. Pull the carpet up and over the retaining stud. Peel back enough carpet to access the area.
20. Remove the nuts that secure the quarter inner frame support bracket to the weld studs coming up through the floor.
21. Remove the wheelhouse liner panel in order to access the 2nd weld stud head for drilling. Refer to «Rear Wheelhouse Liner Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) .
22. From the underside of the vehicle, drill out the center of the weld studs enough to break the heads loose from the floor.
23. Remove the remaining studs.
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Remove the quarter inner frame support bracket by sliding the bracket free toward the center of the vehicle.

1. Install any previously removed floor shims to the marked area(s).
2. Position the quarter inner frame support bracket to the vehicle by sliding the bracket from center outward.
3. Install any previously removed shims into position between the frame support bracket and the longitudinal support frame.
4. Ensure that the longitudinal support frame is still aligned to the grease pencil mark on the sound deadener. Install the bolts attaching the frame support bracket to the longitudinal support frame. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 37 N.m (27 lb ft)
5. From the underside of the vehicle, insert an M8 flange head bolt or Hex with flat washer through the bracket where the studs were previously drilled out.
6. From the rear compartment, install the original nut/washer onto the 2 bolts. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 37 N.m (27 lb ft)
7. When replacing the left side, perform the following steps. Skip these steps for the right side: Position the hydraulic pump to the mounting location. Apply Loctite® Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts. Install the bolts (1) to the hydraulic pump bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
8. Install the compartment lid strut actuator. Refer to «Folding Top Compartment Lid Strut Actuator Replacement - Rear»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
9. Install the compartment lid hydraulic cylinder to the link.
10. Install the lower cylinder retainer pin (2).
11. Install the lower cylinder retainer spring-clip (1).
12. Install the upper cylinder retainer pin (2).
13. Install the spring-clip to the upper cylinder retainer pin.
14. Remove the positioning shims between the longitudinal support frame and the wheelhouse mat.
15. Install the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
16. Remove the protective covering from the rear compartment.
17. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
18. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
19. Connect the battery. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
20. Inspect the hydraulic system for fluid leaks.
21. Inspect the hydraulic system fluid level and add fluid as needed. Refer to «Folding Top Fluid Addition»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system__folding-top-fluid-addition) .
22. Close the rear compartment.

24. Raise the vehicle.
25. Rustproof the bolt heads and the surrounding metal on the undercarriage.

3. With the aid of an assistant, remove the strut actuator: Support the folding top to prevent the top from moving. Use a small flat-bladed tool to lift up on the retainer clip (1) on the lower pivot link bracket side of the strut actuator. NOTE: Apply pressure only at the end of the strut actuator that you are removing or attaching. DO NOT apply pressure to the middle of the rod because damage or bending will result. Remove the strut actuator (1) from the ball joint (2) on the lower pivot link bracket.
4. Position the folding top panel so that the panel is resting unlatched on the windshield header, with the locating pins in the receivers.
5. Remove the side compartment trim. 3. While holding the turnbuckle (2), loosen both of the jam nuts (1) on the drive rod.
4. Turn the turnbuckle (2), as necessary, to adjust the quarter window. Turn the turnbuckle clockwise to adjust the driver side window in. Turn the turnbuckle counterclockwise to adjust the driver side window out. Turn the turnbuckle counterclockwise to adjust the passenger side window in. Turn the turnbuckle clockwise to adjust the passenger side window out.
5. While holding the turnbuckle (2) tighten both of the drive rod jam nuts (1). Tighten: Tighten the jam nuts to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
6. Manually close the folding top, until the rear edge of the quarter window starts to contact the bulb seal. Refer to «Folding Top Manual Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
7. Repeat the adjustment procedure, as necessary.

7. Install the drive rod socket (2) to the ball stud (1).
8. Install the ball stud lock ring (1).
9. If the vehicle is equipped with a jamb nut, install the jam nut (1) to the drive rod socket. Do NOT tighten the jamb nut.

6. Install the P-clips (1) to the hydraulic and the electrical lines.

20. Use a flat-bladed tool to lift up on the retainer clip (2) on the link side of the strut actuator.
21. Remove the strut actuator (2) from the ball joint (1) on the link.
22. Remove the front link bolts (1).
23. Remove the rear link shoulder bolt (1).
24. Remove the link from the vehicle.

1. Position the link to the vehicle. Verify that the switch pin (2) is positioned between the bracket (3) and the link (1).
2. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
3. Install the rear link shoulder bolt (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 36 N.m (27 lb ft).
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. Install the front link bolts (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in).
6. Lift the link to the full upright position and install the strut actuator (2) to the ball joint (1) on the link.
7. While pushing up on the link, install the travel limit screw (1) to the link. Tighten: Tighten the screw to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
8. Install the retainer pin (2) to the hydraulic cylinder.
9. Install the spring clip (1) to the hydraulic cylinder retainer pin.
10. Install the hydraulic cylinder to the closeout panel in the rear storage compartment. Refer to «Folding Top Storage Compartment Panel Hydraulic Cylinder Replacement - Rear»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
11. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
12. Position the link conduit (2) to the link. Install the link conduit screws (1). Tighten: Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
13. Align the P-clips to the grease marks on the hydraulic cylinder hoses and the electrical wires.
14. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
15. Install the P-clip screws (1) that attach the hoses and the wires to the link. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
16. Install the rear compartment lid. Refer to «Folding Top Stowage Compartment Lid Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
17. Install the rear storage compartment panel. Refer to «Folding Top Stowage Compartment Rear Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
18. Install the position switch to the storage compartment closeout panel. Refer to «Folding Top Stowage Compartment Rear Panel Position Switch Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
19. Install the side compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) or «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
20. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
21. Remove the protective covering.
22. Install the support and the carpet over the hydraulic pump.
23. Raise the rear compartment partition (1).
24. Close the rear compartment.
25. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
26. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

1. Place the folding top in the up position.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
4. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the trunk.
5. Turn the bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
6. Remove the compartment side trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
7. Locate the electrical connector (1) on the position sensor switch.
8. Remove the electrical connector (2) from the retainer clip (1).
9. Disconnect the electrical connector.
10. Note the amount of wire between the tie wrap and the position sensor switch prior to cutting the tie wrap holding the electrical wire to the bracket.
11. Remove the position sensor switch screw (2).
12. Remove the position sensor switch from the link (1).

1. Verify that the switch pin (2) is positioned between the bracket (3) and the link actuator (1).
2. Align the position sensor switch to the link, aligning the pin on the switch (1) to the hole in the bracket.
3. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
4. Install the screw (2) to the position sensor switch. Tighten: Tighten the screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
5. Connect the electrical connector (2) to the position sensor switch.
6. Connect the electrical connector to the retainer clip (1).
7. Secure the electrical connector to the bracket with a new tie wrap. Use the same amount of wire between the tie wrap and the position sensor switch that you replaced.
8. Install the compartment side rim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Side Trim Replacement - Left Side»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) in Body Rear End.
9. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
10. Remove the protective covering.
11. Close the rear compartment.
12. Install the support and the carpet over the hydraulic pump.
13. Operate the folding top under power through one complete cycle in each direction.
14. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

1. Place the folding top in the up position.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
4. Loosen the screw (2) on the position sensor switch.
5. Verify that the pin (2) on the position sensor switch is positioned between the bracket (3) and the link actuator (1).
6. Adjust the position sensor switch so that the link actuator (1) depresses the pin (2).
7. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
8. Tighten the position sensor switch screw (2). Tighten: Tighten the screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
9. Remove the protective covering.
10. Close the rear compartment.
11. Cycle the folding top under power through one complete cycle in both directions.
12. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Scheme 35

1. Place the folding top in the down position. Place a protective covering over the interior of the vehicle and the adjacent body panels.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Loosen the nuts (3) from the rear compartment lid (1).
4. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
5. Adjust the lid as necessary. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
6. Close the lid.
7. Verify that the lid is aligned properly. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
8. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary.
9. Remove the protective covering.
10. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Scheme 36

The cross car position of the rear compartment is determined by the 2 cross car bumpers (1), one on each side of the rear compartment lid. Each bumper contacts a non-adjustable bracket (2), that is mounted to the longitudinal frame support of the folding top. Both of the bumpers must contact these brackets when the rear compartment lid is closed.

1. Place the folding top in the down position.
2. Measure the gaps on both sides of the rear compartment lid. Determine the direction and amount of adjustment required. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
3. Open the rear compartment.
4. Place a protective covering over the interior and the adjacent body panels.
5. Loosen the cross car bumper nuts (1) on the rear compartment lid.
6. Apply LOCTITE™ Blue, GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the bolts.
7. Adjust the bumpers as necessary. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
8. Close the rear compartment.
9. Verify that the lid is aligned properly. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
10. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary.
11. Remove the protective covering.

9. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary.

Rear Compartment Lid Wing Adjustment Procedure - Up/Down

1. Place the folding top in the down position.
2. Place a protective covering over the interior of the vehicle and the adjacent body panels.
3. Open the rear compartment.
4. Loosen the jam nuts from the rubber bumper (2) on the quarter panel.
5. Adjust the rubber bumpers (2) up or down to obtain the necessary adjustment. Tighten: Tighten the jam nuts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
6. Close the rear compartment.
7. Verify that the lid is aligned properly. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
8. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary.
9. Remove the protective covering.

Rear Compartment Lid Adjustment Procedure - Up/Down

1. Place the folding top in the down position. Place a protective covering over the interior of the vehicle and the adjacent body panels.
2. Open the rear compartment.
3. Loosen the jam nuts from the rear compartment lid bumper (1).
4. Adjust the rubber bumpers (1) up or down to obtain the necessary adjustment. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 26 N.m (19 lb ft).
5. Close the rear compartment.
6. Verify that the lid is aligned properly. Refer to «Folding Top Clearance Gap Specifications»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .
7. Repeat the adjustment procedure as necessary.
8. Remove the protective covering.
9. Inspect the folding top for proper operation. Refer to «Power Folding Top Description and Operation»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#convertible-top-system) .

Manually Moving the Folding Top from the Down Position

1. Lower both sun visors and open both doors.
2. Use the key cylinder in the fascia to unlatch the rear compartment lid. Raise the rear compartment.
3. Locate the hydraulic pump beneath the carpet in the storage compartment on the driver side of the rear compartment.
4. Turn the pump bypass valve (1) counterclockwise until the valve stops.
5. Pull both of the over-center links down to unlock the storage compartment panel.
6. Move the compartment panel rearward and up to the stored position. Pull on the center of the panel in order to maintain even pressure. The rubber bumpers on each corner of the panel will fit against the underside on the rear compartment lid.
7. Push both sides of the over-center links up in order to lock the storage compartment panel.
8. Remove the wrench which is located inside the passenger side storage compartment.
9. Remove the storage compartment. Refer to «Body Rear Compartment Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
10. Push up on the over-center link (1) until the closeout panel starts to move.
11. Grasp the compartment closeout panel and pull open with one hand. Use your other hand to assist one of the outer panels to an open position.
12. Reach in from the side of the vehicle and under the top to remove the headliner plug. The plug is located in the center of the top near the front.
13. Insert the wrench into the latch actuator bolt beneath the plug location. Turn the wrench counterclockwise until the bolt stops, while gently pulling up on the center of the folding top to release the top.
14. Grasp the folding top on the front and the side. Lift the top out of the stored position.
15. Move the folding top towards the windshield header. Be careful not to pinch your fingers between the panels.
16. Place your hands on the folding top and guide the top into the closed position.
17. While sitting in the driver seat, pull down on the rear of the front folding top panel.
18. While holding the rear of the front panel down, insert the wrench. Turn the wrench counterclockwise until the wrench stops. This will ensure that the latch jaws are fully open.
19. Pull down on the rear of the front panel and turn the wrench clockwise until the wrench stops. Push up on the folding top to ensure that the top is secured. If the top moves away from the windshield header, the top is not secure and you will need to repeat this procedure.
20. From outside the vehicle, push down on both rear corners of the front folding top panel to ensure that the rear latches are latched.
21. From inside the vehicle, grasp one of the closeout outer panels and pull the panel out while folding the closeout panel down.
22. Install the storage compartment. Refer to «Body Rear Compartment Replacement»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
23. Turn the hydraulic pump bypass valve (1) clockwise until the valve stops.
24. Close the rear compartment lid

Manually Moving the Folding Top from the Up Position

1. Lower both sun visors and open both doors.

11. Move the folding top towards the windshield header. Be careful not to pinch your fingers between the panels.
12. Position the folding top as required.

10. Ground G301: to the FTC module and the pump and valve assembly
11. Ground G202: for the auxiliary power relay and the valet switch

System Description

The folding top control (FTC) module has 2 modes of operation, the folding top control and the decklid control. The folding top is activated by the folding top control switch. The decklid is activated with the interior trunk release switch, key FOB, external key and the trunk close switch.

Through input information, the FTC module performs the following tasks

1. Determines the state of all the moving components of the folding top system at any time during and open or close operation
2. Makes corrections in the positions of the components when necessary
3. Continues in the direction indicated by the FTC switch

The FTC module can stop and reverse the operation at any point when you apply the folding top control switch. To avoid an inadvertent operation of the folding top system when fully open or closed, a 0.75 second delay occurs after the use of the control switch before the FTC module starts the operating sequence. When you activate the system from a suspended state, the response time is less.

System Operation

Before any movement of the top is allowed, the folding top control (FTC) must be aware of the following conditions

1. The windows must be normalized. Refer to «Power Window Reinitialization»(/cadillac/xlr/i-2003-2009/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system__power-window-reinitialization) in Doors.
2. The ignition must be placed in ACCY or RUN, power mode in RUN.
3. The transmission must be placed in PARK.
4. The valet switch must be inactive.
5. The pump motor temperature must be within operating range.

The sequence for opening the top is as follows

1. Hold the open/close control switch to the open request position. The folding top status changes to Opening.
2. A message is sent to disable the windows from operating using the door switches.
3. The windows open using the Express open mode.
4. The decklid is unlatched.
5. the deck lid opens, the front tonneau opens and the header latch unlatches.
6. The top retracts to the open position and is stowed in the rear compartment.
7. The rear tonneau is extended.
8. The header latch latches securing the top and the front tonneau closes.
9. The deck lid closes.
10. The deck lid latches.
11. The top status changes from Closed to Open and a chime tone is heard.
12. The windows are enabled.

The sequence for closing the top is as follows

1. Hold the open/close control switch in the close request position. The folding top status changes to Closing.
2. A message is sent to disable the windows from operating using the door switches.
3. The windows open using the Express open mode.
4. The decklid is unlatched.
5. The deck lid opens, the front tonneau opens and the header latch unlatches.
6. The rear tonneau retracts.
7. The top extends to the closed position.
8. The rear tonneau remains retracted.
9. The header latch latches and the front tonneau closes.
10. The deck lid closes.
11. The deck lid latches.
12. The top status changes from Open to Closed and a chime tone is heard.
13. The windows are enabled.
14. Raise the windows using the Express up mode, by releasing and pressing the open/close control switch within 5 seconds of the top being secured in the closed position.

Potentiometer Sensors

The folding top control (FTC) module determines the state of all the moving components of the folding top system during an open or close operation using the potentiometers that monitor the folding top and the front and rear tonneau panels. The FTC module records the open and close reference positions and determines the current position of the panel, shown as counts on the scan tool. For example, if a sensor open reference is set at 100 counts and the close reference is set at 200 counts, the component will operate within those limits. As a component reaches the reference point, the system will continue to drive the component to secure the component in place. This means that the status of the component will be outside of the reference position counts.

If a component does not reach a learned reference position, based on counts, the system will continue to drive that component until the component reaches the reference point. If this reference position is not achieved, the system will time-out and will not complete the cycle.

When an inspection of the components or a repair to the system is completed, perform a folding top learn procedure. Refer to Power Folding Top Learn .

Hydraulic Control

The folding top control (FTC) module will control the hydraulic system, which moves the folding top components, by controlling the On/Off state and the direction of the hydraulic pump motor, and by controlling the open/close state of each valve. The 5 valves controlled by the FTC module move the following components

1. The folding top
2. The front tonneau
3. The header latch
4. The decklid

The rear tonneau is controlled by the pump bypass valve located at the hydraulic reservoir The direction of the tonneau movement is based on the motor direction.

Whenever the open/close control switch is released or the top becomes inoperative in a suspended state, pressure will be maintained in the system to avoid drifting and damage of components. After 4 minutes the hydraulic pressure will be released by cycling the valves ON and OFF. This allows the top to gradually settle to a resting position.

Pump Motor

The pump motor continuously monitors the thermistor temperature sensor for temperatures which are too high or too low. Different operating temperature setting are required for the decklid and the folding top functions. If the control module detects a temperature between the pump motor pre-alarm setting and the pump motor alarm setting, the current open/close operation shall be completed, but no new top operation will be allowed until the pump motor cools below the pre-alarm setting. If the temperature reaches the pump motor alarm value, all top operation will cease. A low temperature value is sent over the class 2 serial data that will also cease all operation when the outside temperature is below this value. The pump motor temperature settings are

1. Too high pre-alarm of 105°C (221°F)
2. Too high alarm of 115°C (239°F)
3. Too cold for folding top operation of -20°C (-4°F)
4. Too cold for decklid operation of -30°C (-22°F)

Driver Notification

Under certain conditions the driver shall be alerted with one of several messages. These messages are sent through class 2 serial data to the driver information center/instrument panel.

1. CLOSE CARGO COVER: If the luggage barrier is not in place and top operation is attempted
2. TOP INOP OUT OF PARK: If the power mode is in RUN, but the transmission is not in PARK and a top operation is attempted
3. TOP MOTOR OVER TEMP: If the motor thermistor temperature is above the operating range
4. TOP NOT SECURE: If the top open/close switch is released before an open or close operation is complete
5. TOP TOO COLD TO MOVE: If the motor thermistor temperature is below the operating range
6. TRUNK AJAR: If the decklid operation is not completed
7. VALET ACTIVE TOP INOP: When the valet switch is switch ON active, any request to operate the top or decklid will be inhibited.

Default Operation

If the folding top control (FTC) module is requested to operate the folding top and discovers that a component is not in the correct position based on information from other inputs, the FTC will move those components to a safe position before executing the sequence requested by the control switch. At first this will look as though the folding top is moving in the incorrect direction, but as soon as the FTC module moves those components to a safe position, the FTC will then operate the system as requested.
