DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX
Diagnostic Starting Point - Object Detection
Begin the system diagnosis with the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information
- The identification of the control module which commands the system
- The ability of the control module to communicate through the serial data circuit
- The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status
The use of Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle , will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying
This vehicle is equipped with an on-board diagnostic display feature capable of displaying DTCs using the 3 indicators on the rear parking assist display. After the bulb check has been completed, the red outside indicator flashes to indicate a malfunction with the system. The module disables operation of the ultrasonic rear parking assist (URPA) system under this condition.
In order to enter the diagnostic mode, complete the following actions
- With the ignition turned OFF, short the rear parking assist diagnostic connector to ground while the vehicle is in PARK. Refer to «Component Connector End Views»(/cadillac/sts/i-2007-2011/remont/body-electrical/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-diagnostic-starting-point-connector-end-views) for the location of the rear parking assist diagnostic connector.
- Turn the ignition ON.
- Place your foot on the brake.
- Shift the vehicle into REVERSE within 5 seconds. If the vehicle is not shifted into reverse within 5 seconds after turning the ignition ON, the diagnostic mode will still be initiated. However, a reverse input wiring fault will be registered as sequence #7 as shown in the Diagnostic Indicator table below. Refer to «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Clearing»(/cadillac/sts/i-2007-2011/remont/collisionavoidance/#object-detection-system__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-clearing) for specific steps on how to clear DTCs. After the reverse input wiring code is cleared, repeat the DTC displaying steps in order to enter the diagnostic mode.
When the diagnostic mode is first entered, the rear parking assist display displays the amber outside indicator and the red outside indicator. Then the indicators on the rear parking assist display will display one or more of the sequences in the table below to indicate where the fault exists within the rear parking assist system. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Clearing for the specific steps on how to clear diagnostic trouble codes.

Diagnostic Indicators
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Clearing
The rear parking assist diagnostic sequences may be cleared in one of the following ways
Vehicle Moving
| IMPORTANT | The sequences will not clear if the rear parking assist diagnostic connector is grounded. |
- Drive the vehicle forward at least 24 km/h (15 mph).
- Stop the vehicle.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
Vehicle Stopped
| IMPORTANT | The sequences will not clear if the rear parking assist diagnostic connector is grounded. |
- Turn the ignition ON.
- Place foot on the brake.
- Shift the vehicle into REVERSE within five seconds.
- Turn the ignition OFF.

Circuit/System Description
The lane departure warning (LDW) system consists of a vehicle direction alert alarm warning (VDAAW) module mounted on the windshield. The VDAAW is enabled and disabled through a switch located in the headlamp switch assembly. When enabled, the VDAAW will illuminate the indicator located in the switch. A camera located in the LDW module is used to locate lane markings in the road. When the system is working and can detect the lane markings, the VDAAW will illuminate the lane departure warning indicator in the instrument panel cluster (IPC). The IPC indicator will illuminate green when the system is operating properly and flash amber when the vehicle crosses a lane marking without the turn signal being used. An audible warning will also sound three times when the IPC indicator is flashing. The VDAAW system communicates with the IPC via serial data.
Conditions for Running the DTC
The system voltage is between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The VDAAW module has not learned a calibration value.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The VDAAW module disables the system.
- The SERVICE LANE DEPARTURE SYSTEM message is displayed on the DIC.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

The vehicle direction alert alarm warning (VDAAW) system is a convenience feature that detects an unintentional lane departure. The VDAAW system informs the vehicle operator of deviation from the road lane markings. The VDAAW system consists of the VDAAW module which includes a camera and an On/Off switch which is a soft key located on the navigation radio system. The VDAAW system receives switch inputs from the navigation radio via the serial data circuit. When the system is working and can detect lane markings, the VDAAW indicator in the IPC illuminates. The VDAAW indicator illuminates green when the system is operating properly and flashes amber when the vehicle crosses a lane marking without the turn signal. An audible warning sounds three times when the amber indicator is flashing. The VDAAW system will not warn the operator if the turn signal is on or if the operator makes a sharp maneuver. The VDAAW system communicates with the IPC via the serial data circuit.
Battery voltage is between 9-16 volts.
The VDAAW module has detected an internal failure.
The VDAAW module will disable the VDAAW feature.

Visual/Physical Inspection

- Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
- Make sure the rear parking assist sensors located on the vehicle rear bumper are clear. Remove any snow, mud or ice that is blocking the sensors.
Intermittent
Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections .

The object alarm system monitors the distance and how close a vehicle is to an object when backing up in a parking maneuver. The object alarm system will notify the driver of any objects of interest when backing up at speeds less than 5 km/h (3 mph). The distance between a vehicle and an object of interest is monitored by the 4 ultrasonic sensors located in the rear bumpers of the vehicle. The object sensors receive the echo signals reflected off an object of interest while the vehicle is backing up at speeds less than 5 km/h (3 mph). The rear object sensor control module receives the vehicle speed input from the ECM via the vehicle speed signal circuit. When the backing up speed exceeds 5 km/h (3 mph), the rear parking aid (RPA) system is disabled. The object detection system uses visual displays and audible warnings from the radio speakers to warn the driver of an object of interest within the defined field of view. The Rear Integration Module (RIM) controls the RPA chime function via the chime control circuit and sends serial data request to the radio to activate the chime as needed. The visual RPA display comprises of two amber and one red indicators and these indicators illuminate based on the vehicle distance to the object of interest. When the RPA system is activated, the RPA display first performs a bulb check before any normal operation. The object sensor is a three wire sensor comprising of the supply voltage circuit, signal circuit and the low reference circuit. Power and ground is provided to the object sensors from the rear object sensor control module via the object sensor supply voltage circuit and low reference circuit. The object detection system is initiated when the rear object sensor control module receives the transmission reverse input from the RIM via the backup lamp supply voltage circuit.

Scan Tool Reference
Ignition ON, transmission in reverse, block each of the object detect sensors on at a time. The appropriate display should illuminate indicating the object has been detected.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear object sensor control module.
- Test for less than 1.0 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 12 and ground. If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates when connected between the ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal 13 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition 1 voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, transmission in reverse, verify that a test lamp illuminates when connected between the backup lamp supply voltage circuit terminal 15 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the backup lamp supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If circuit tests normal replace the rear integration module (RIM).
- Start the engine, scan tool installed, with the vehicle drive wheels raised and the vehicle placed in drive or 1st gear. Verify that the speedometer value matches the scan tool Vehicle Speed parameter in the ECM Engine Data List. If the speedometer does not match the scan tool Vehicle Speed parameter, test the vehicle speed signal circuit terminal 18 for a short to voltage, a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
- Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the rear object sensor control module.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the rear parking assist display.
- Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the telltale assembly supply voltage circuit terminal A and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the rear object sensor control module.
- Connect a test lamp one at a time between the 12 volt supply circuit terminal A and the control circuits listed below: Left amber LED control circuit terminal B Center amber LED control circuit terminal C Red LED control circuit terminal D
- Ignition ON, transmission in reverse, place an object less than 0.3 m (11 in) away from the rear bumper. The test lamp should illuminate at each control circuit. If the test lamp does not illuminate at any of the control circuits, test the appropriate control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the rear object sensor control module.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear parking assist display.
Component Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the RPA display.
- Connect a 10A fused jumper wire between 12-volt reference circuit terminal A and B+.
- Connect a 10A fused jumper wire between control circuit terminal and ground of the appropriate LED listed below: Left amber LED control circuit terminal B Center amber LED control circuit terminal C Red LED control circuit terminal D
- Verify that the appropriate LED illuminates. If the component does not perform as specified, replace the RPA display.

Scan Tool Reference
The Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1 is a confirmation that the object alarm system has successfully entered the diagnostic mode. If the Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1 does not display after an attempt to enter the diagnostic mode, it may be as a result of not entering the system diagnostic mode successfully or an RPA diagnostic input circuit fault is present. After the Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1 is displayed, observe the RPA display for the next Diagnostic Indicator Pattern displayed. The indicator pattern displayed after the Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1 is the diagnostic indicator pattern that actually needs be diagnosed. Proceed to the appropriate Diagnostic Pattern in this table. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying .
Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1
- Enter the diagnostic mode. Refer to «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying»(/cadillac/sts/i-2007-2011/remont/collisionavoidance/#object-detection-system__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-displaying) . Verify that the Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1 is displayed as shown in the diagnostic indicator list. If the Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 1 does not display after entering the diagnostic mode, test the signal circuit terminal 16 for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear object sensor control module.
- Proceed to the next Diagnostic Indicator Pattern displayed.
Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 2, 3, 4 and 5
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of the appropriate rear object sensor.
- Ignition OFF for 30 seconds, test for less than 5.0 ohms between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the object alarm module.
- Ignition ON, transmission in REVERSE, test for 8.0-9.0 volts between the voltage reference circuit terminal 3 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the voltage reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the object alarm module. If less than the specified range, test the voltage reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the object alarm module.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the object alarm module.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1.0 volt between the appropriate signal circuit listed below and ground: LR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 2 LR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 1 RR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 3 RR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 4 If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the appropriate signal circuit listed below and ground: LR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 2 LR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 1 RR middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 3 RR corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 4 If not than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for less than 2 ohms between the signal circuit terminal 1 at the sensor harness connector and the appropriate signal circuit listed below: LF middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 2 LF corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 1 RF middle object sensor signal circuit terminal 3 RF corner object sensor signal circuit terminal 4 If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the appropriate rear object alarm sensor.
Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 6
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear object sensor control module.
- Ignition ON, test for 9.5 volts between the chime control circuit terminal 22 and ground. If less than the specified value, test the chime control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If all circuits test normal, replace the BCM. If greater than the specified value, refer to «Speaker Malfunction»(/cadillac/sts/i-2007-2011/remont/entertainment-systems/#cellular-system-entertainment-system-and-navigation-system) .
Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 7
| IMPORTANT | When entering the diagnostic mode, it is necessary to follow the instructions as indicated. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying . If the vehicle is not shifted into reverse within 5 seconds after turning the ignition ON, the diagnostic mode will still be initiated but a reverse input wiring fault will be registered as Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 7 as shown in the indicator list. |
Verify that the Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 7 displays as shown in diagnostic indicator list.

Diagnostic Indicator Pattern 8 and 9
- While still in the diagnostic mode, disconnect the rear object sensors one at a time and verify that the indicator pattern 8 or 9 does not display after the suspect sensors has been disconnected. If the indicator pattern 8 or 9 continues to display after each sensor has been disconnected and reconnected, test the object sensor supply voltage circuit and the low reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the rear object sensor control module. If the indicator pattern 8 and 9 does not display after disconnecting the suspect sensor, replace the suspect sensor.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the object sensor control module.

The Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA) system uses side object sensors located behind the fascia at each of the vehicle's rear corners. Visual indicators located in the right and left outside rearview mirrors alert the driver to the presence of objects of interest within the corresponding blind spots, or zones, on each side of the vehicle. The system is controlled by the driver information center (DIC) which can also communicate its status.
Each sensor receives battery power, ground, as well as serial data communications. The left and right sensors are identical, however an additional ground circuit is required to configure the sensor for operation on the right side. Communication is via a serial data and each sensor shares the serial data circuit in parallel, allowing continuation of communication between the sensors. The scan tool is able to communicate with each sensor independently. The side object sensors control corresponding mirror icons by sending messages to the door modules which in turn switch power to the LED indicators.
- The side object sensors are capable of detecting when they are blocked by mud, snow, or ice build up on the fascia. When a sensor is blocked, the driver information center (DIC) will display SIDE BLIND ZONE SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE. The SBZA system transitions back to the normal operating state when the blockage is removed. Bumper sticks, labels, and heavy rain storms may also cause this condition.
- The SBZA system is designed to ignore stationary objects; however, the system may occasionally detect guard rails, signs, trees, shrubs, or other stationary objects as an object in the blind zone. This is normal system operation and does not require service.
- The SBZA system may indicate an object in the blind zone if a trailer is attached to the vehicle, or a bicycle or object is extending out to either side of the vehicle.
- The SBZA system is disabled if any of the following occurs: The door modules determine that a malfunction exists in the side object indicator. There is a loss of serial data communication or a SBZA system DTC is set. The SBZA system is manually disabled by the driver through the DIC.
- Each side object sensor maintains a history buffer of the previous 16 SBZA events which can be accessed using the scan tool. These parameters may be used to help diagnose a system malfunction or an intermittent concern.
- Because the sensors are identical, they may be swapped from one side of the vehicle to the other in an attempt to isolate a concern. Sensors should NOT be swapped from one vehicle to another.

Right Side Object Sensor Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the right side object sensor.
- Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminals listed below and ground: Terminal 5 Terminal 6 If greater than the specified range, test the appropriate ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 2 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the right side object sensor.
Left Side Object Sensor Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the left side object sensor.
- Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 5 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 2 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the right side object sensor.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the serial data circuit terminal 4 and ground. If greater than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for infinite resistance between the serial data circuit terminal 4 and ground. If not the specified value, test the serial data circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for less than 2 ohms between the serial data circuit terminal 4 at the left side object sensor harness connector and the serial data circuit terminal 4 at the right side object sensor harness connector. If greater than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for an open/high resistance.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the left side object sensor.
Side Object Indicator Malfunction
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X3 and X4 harness connectors at the appropriqate door module.
- Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the control circuit terminal 4 X3 and B+. Install a jumper wire between the low reference circuit terminal 7 X4 and ground.
- Ignition ON, verify the indicator is illuminated. If the indicator is not illuminated, test the control circuit and the low reference circuit for a short to voltage, short to ground, or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the appropriate outside rearview mirror.

The vehicle direction alert alarm warning (VDAAW) system is a convenience feature that detects an unintentional lane departure. The VDAAW system informs the vehicle operator of deviation from the road lane markings. The VDAAW system consists of the VDAAW module which includes a camera and an On/Off switch which is a soft key located on the navigation radio system. The VDAAW system receives switch inputs from the navigation radio via the serial data circuit. When the system is working and can detect lane markings, the VDAAW indicator in the IPC illuminates. The VDAAW indicator illuminates green when the system is operating properly and flashes amber when the vehicle crosses a lane marking without the turn signal. An audible warning sounds three times when the amber indicator is flashing. The VDAAW system will not warn the operator if the turn signal is on or if the operator makes a sharp maneuver. The VDAAW system communicates with the IPC via the serial data circuit.

Removal Procedure

- Release the tabs securing the rear park assist module (3) to the module bracket.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
Installation Procedure
- Connect the electrical connectors.
- Install the module (3) to the bracket.
- Install the rear upper compartment trim. Refer to «Rear Compartment Trim Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/sts/i-2007-2011/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-paneling) .

Vehicle Direction Alert Alarm Warning Module Calibration
To initialize the calibration, select Calibrate Module in the scan tool Module Setup menu for the Vehicle Direction Alert Alarm Warning Module. After the Calibrate Module selection has been made, operate the vehicle in the following conditions until the green indicator illuminates
- Maintain vehicle speeds of 56 km/h (35 mph) or more
- Drive on clear stretch of straight road
- Drive during the daytime
- Ensure the road contains visible references (well defined lane markings, curbs, guard rails, fences, buildings, etc.)
When the lane departure warning system is in calibration mode, the amber light on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) will remain illuminated. When the calibration is complete, the green indicator will illuminate and the system is ready to assist. Immediately after the self calibration procedure, there may be a delay in lane crossing alerts. The lane departure warning system will run further calibration tests as the vehicle is driven in order to improve performance.
One or more of the following conditions may increase the length of time required to complete the self-calibration procedure
- Operating the vehicle at 31 to 61 km/h (19 to 38 mph)
- Curves in roadway
- Driving through snow or fog, driving at night, or driving directly into the sun
- Bott's Dots type lane markings
- Poor contrast lane markings
Conditions that will prevent completion of the self-calibration procedure
- Operating the vehicle at less than 31 km/h (19 mph)
- No visible lane markings
Object Detection Description and Operation (Parking Assist)
The object alarm system monitors the distance and how close a vehicle is to an object when backing up in a parking maneuver. The object alarm system will notify the driver of any objects of interest when backing up at speeds less than 5 km/h (3 mph). The distance between a vehicle and an object of interest is monitored by the 4 ultrasonic sensors located in the rear bumpers of the vehicle. The object sensors receive the echo signals reflected off an object of interest while the vehicle is backing up at speeds less than 5 km/h (3 mph). The rear object sensor control module receives the vehicle speed input from the ECM via the vehicle speed signal circuit. When the backing up speed exceeds 5 km/h (3 mph), the rear parking assist (RPA) system is disabled. The object detection system uses visual displays and audible warnings from the radio speakers to warn the driver of an object of interest within the defined field of view. The rear integration module (RIM) controls the RPA chime function via the chime control circuit and will send serial data request to the radio to sound the chime as needed. The visual RPA display comprises of two amber and one red indicators and these indicators illuminate based on the vehicle distance to the object of interest. When the RPA system is activated the RPA display first performs a bulb check before any normal operation. The object sensor is a three wire sensor comprising of the supply voltage circuit, signal circuit and the low reference circuit. Power and ground is provided to the object sensors from the rear object sensor control module via the object sensor supply voltage circuit and low reference circuit. The typical object sensor signal circuit voltage when the system is active is between 7.2-9.2V. The object detection system is initiated when the rear object sensor control module receives the transmission reverse input from the RIM via the backup lamp supply voltage circuit.
When the ignition is ON and the vehicle is placed into reverse, the RPA performs a bulb check. During the bulb check, the 3 indicators on the display illuminate for approximately 2 seconds to indicate that the system is working. The RPA performs a bulb check and operates when the following conditions are present
- The ignition is ON.
- The vehicle is placed in REVERSE (R).
- The vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph). At speeds greater than 5 km/h (3 mph), the RPA is disable. The red indicator flashes to warn the driver that the RPA is disabled.
The RPA senses how close the vehicle is to an object. The distance is determined by the 4 ultrasonic sensors located on the rear bumper. When the system detects an object, one of the following will occur
- If the object is less than 0.3 m (11 in) away from the rear of the vehicle, the amber outside, amber middle, and the red outside indicators flash and the chime sounds continuously.
- If the object is less than 0.3-0.5 m (11-20 in) away from the rear of the vehicle, the amber outside, amber middle, and the red outside indicators are on and the chime sounds continuously.
- If the object is 0.5-1.0 m (20-40 in) away from the rear of the vehicle, the amber outside, and the amber middle indicators are on.
- If the object is 1.0-1.5 m (40-60 in) away from the rear of the vehicle, the amber outside indicator is on and the chime sounds one time on the first detection of an object.
The RPA can detect objects 7.6 cm (3 in) wide and at least 25.4 cm (10 in) tall. It cannot detect objects above the level of the roof.
If the red indicator flashes continuously, the on-board diagnostic needs to be entered to determine if a malfunction is present. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying .
Object Detection Description and Operation (Lane Departure Warning)
Vehicle direction alert alarm warning (VDAAW) is a convenience feature that issues a warning when the system detects that the vehicle has unintentionally crossed a lane marking. The VDAAW lane sense function utilizes imagery collected by the camera to detect lane markings. An audible warning provided by the audio system is issued when then VDAAW system detects an unintentional lane departure. The VDAAW receives vehicle speed, steering wheel angle and brake pedal position information via the serial data circuit. The VDAAW system consists of two main components
- The VDAAW module which includes the camera
- VDAAW enable/disable (ON/OFF) switch
The VDAAW enable/disable switch is a soft key located in the navigation radio system. The VDAAW module receives the VDAAW switch inputs from the navigation radio via serial data circuit. The VDAAW system remembers the last switch state (ON or OFF) and returns to the last switch state in the next ignition cycle.
The VDAAW module is mounted on the front windshield and uses a forward facing camera to determine lane markings. It is important that the windshield in front of the camera remain clean. Fog on the windshield or the camera lens may inhibit proper operation.
The VDAAW system has four operating states
- Vehicle speed is less than 35 mph. The VDAAW system is designed to function at speeds greater than 35 mph.
- The VDAAW system cannot detect lane markings. This may be because there are no lane markings (as in a country road) or that the lane markings cannot be determined because of snow or other elements that may affect driving conditions.
- The windshield or camera lens may be blocked by fog or other elements and the system cannot detect lane markings
Lane Crossing Alerts
A lane crossing alert consists of the following
- Chimes are activated through the vehicle audio system.
- The VDAAW indicator that is normally green will turn to flashing amber.
The VDAAW system will not give any lane crossing alerts under the following conditions
- Vehicle speed is less than 35 mph.
- The system cannot detect lane markings.
- The correct turn signal is activated. An activated turn signal is interpreted as an intentional lane crossing.

The VDAAW system commands the DIC to display the following messages to alert the driver of a system concern or status information
- SERVICE LANE DEPARTURE SYSTEM
- LANE DEPARTURE SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE
Object Detection Description and Operation (Side Blind Zone Alert)
The side blind zone alert (SBZA) system is designed to detect vehicles or other objects that may be located in the vehicles blind spots. This detection is performed by two side object sensors, located behind the rear fascia on each side of the vehicle. When an object is detected in a blind spot, an indicator in the outside rearview mirror will illuminate, notifying the driver that it is unsafe to change lanes.
The SBZA system is made up of the following components
- Left side object sensor
- Right side object sensor
- Driver door module
- Passenger door module
- Driver outside rearview mirror
- Passenger outside rearview mirror
Side Object Sensors
The side object sensors are each located behind the rear fascia, positioned so that the sensor is pointing out toward the opposite lane. Each sensor is supplied B+ and ground. The right sensor receives an additional ground. Both sensors communicate independently on the serial data line. The serial data enters the right sensor in a pass-thru configuration, the connects to the left sensor. The scan tool is able to individually communicate with each sensor.
When a vehicle or object is detected by a side object sensor, a serial data message is sent to the appropriate door module to illuminate the indicator located in the outside rearview mirror.
Door Modules
The driver and passenger receive serial data messages from the side object sensors. When a message is received indicating that a vehicle or object is in the blind spot, the appropriate door module will apply voltage to the indicator located in the outside rearview mirror, illuminating the indicator. The door module provides a continuous low reference circuit for the indicator.
Outside Rearview Mirror
The outside rearview mirrors each contain an indicator that is controlled by the appropriate door module. This indicator is illuminated when a vehicle or object is position in the vehicle's blind spot.
Side Blind Zone Alert Operation
When the vehicle is started, the indicators located in the outside rearview mirror will briefly illuminate to indicate that the system is operating. The side object sensors cover a zone of approximately one lane over from both sides of the vehicle, 11 ft. or 3.5 m. This zone starts at each side mirror and goes back approximately 16 ft. (5.0 m). The height of the zone is approximately between 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) and 6 ft. (2.0 m) off the ground. When a vehicle or object is detected in this area, the appropriate indicator will be illuminated, indicating to the driver that it is unsafe to change lanes. If a turn signal is activated while the indicator is illuminated, the indicator will flash as a more urgent warning that a lane change may be unsafe.
Foul weather may affect the operation of the SBZA system. Occasional missed alerts can occur under normal circumstances and will increase in wet conditions. The number of missed alerts will increase with increased rainfall or road spray. Heavy rainfall, as well as mud, dirt, snow, ice, or slush build-up on the rear fascia, will completely disable the system.
If the vehicle is towing a trailer or has an object, such as a bicycle rack, attached to the rear of the vehicle, the SBZA system may not function properly and the indicators will remain illuminated at all time.
SIDE BLIND ZONE ALERT SYSTEM OFF
This message indicates that the system has been disabled through the DIC. Refer to the vehicle owners manual for instructions on how to set personalization options on the DIC.
This message indicates that the system has been disabled because the sensor is blocked or can otherwise not accurately detect vehicles or objects. Such instances may be mud, dirt, snow, ice, or slush build-up on the rear fascia, heavy rainfall, or excessive road spray.
SERVICE SIDE BLIND ZONE ALERT SYSTEM
This message indicates that the system requires service. When the message is displayed, the indicators will remain illuminated at all times, notifying the driver that the SBZA system should not be relied upon when changing lanes.
