Circuit/System Description
The electronic brake control module (EBCM) controls the current through the variable effort steering actuator located on the steering gear. The current used to control the actuator is between 0-1 A. At low speeds and in parking lot maneuvers the current is applied to the actuator causing the orifice to open increasing fluid flow and reducing the steering effort. At high speeds the orifice is commanded closed by reducing current through the actuator and restricting fluid flow increasing steering effort. The EBCM monitors and compares the commanded and feedback current parameters to detect malfunctions in the variable effort steering system.
Conditions for Running the DTC
- Ignition ON.
- Ignition voltage is greater than 8 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
A malfunction, open/high resistance, a invalid signal or a high current is detected on the high control or low control circuit.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The driver information center displays SERVICE POWER STEERING SYSTEM.
- The variable effort steering system is disabled for the remainder of the ignition cycle.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- The condition for setting the DTC is no longer present and the DTC is cleared with a scan tool.
- The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.
Diagnostic Aids
The vehicle may need to be driven to view full actuator commanded and actuator feedback data parameters.

Circuit/System Testing
Note. It is recommended that Component Testing is performed before Circuit/System Testing when diagnosing the actuator because the module will default and does not supply voltage to the sensor when the DTC is set.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the M72 Variable Power Steering Solenoid Valve.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 2 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
- Ignition OFF, connect the test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and the control circuit terminal 2.
- Ignition ON, verify the test lamp briefly illuminates for approximately 1 second, then turns OFF. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit terminal 1 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit terminal 1 for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K17 Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the M72 Variable Power Steering Solenoid Valve.
Component Testing
Static Test
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the M72 Variable Power Steering Solenoid Valve.
- Test for 2.5-10 ohms between the control terminals 1 and 2. If not within the specified range, replace the M72 Variable Power Steering Solenoid Valve.
- Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the M72 Variable Power Steering Solenoid Valve housing/case. If not the specified value, replace the M72 Variable Power Steering Solenoid Valve.

Visual/Physical Inspection

- Verify the power steering fluid level per operating specification.

Note. If fluid is found on a manual steering gear or on an electronic power steering gear, do not replace steering gear. Vehicles equipped with these systems do not use hydraulic power steering fluid. The fluid may be assembly fluid or another system fluid. Clean the components and identify the sources of the leaks before attempting to repair or replace any power steering components. Clearly mark all locations of leaks with paint, marker, or equivalent for warranty identification and engineering root cause analysis.
Some customers may comment on a fluid LEAK or NOISY power steering pump. Upon inspection, the technician may find power steering fluid leaking from the hydraulic power steering system. Use the following inspection procedure in order to diagnose the source of the leak and take appropriate action to correct the condition.
- Inspect the fluid level in the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to «Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system__checking-and-adding-power-steering-fluid) . If the fluid level is NOT low, a careful analysis of the condition is necessary to confirm that the type of fluid is actually power steering fluid.
- Visually inspect the power steering system and components where the fluid has accumulated.
- Use a clean towel or a rag in order to completely clean off all residual fluid from the power steering components.
- Add 30 cc (1 oz) of GE-28431-6 dye to the power steering fluid.
- Start the vehicle and warm the steering system by turning to the left steering stop and to the right steering stop 10 times with the weight of the vehicle on the front tires.
- Turn vehicle engine OFF.
- Shine a black light on the area where the residual fluid accumulated. Identify the sources of the leaks.
- Mark all locations of leaks with paint, marker, or equivalent.
- Repair or replace all affected components.

GE-8001 Dial Indicator Set

- Turn the ignition key to the ON position with the engine OFF.
- With the aid of an assistant, turn the steering wheel to the full stop position and hold the steering wheel in that position until the test is complete. Part of the steering linkage inner tie rod (2) being tested should be inside the steering gear housing. The inner tie rod housing (1) being tested should be inside the steering gear housing and seated against the steering stop.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information) .
- If there is not a good location for the GE-8001 dial indicator pointer at the steering gear housing, install a large worm gear hose clamp (3) to the steering gear housing over the larger steering gear boot clamp and align the clamp so that the screw can be a location for the GE-8001 dial indicator pointer.
- Install the GE-8001 dial indicator between the inner tie rod and the steering gear housing or the worm gear clamp in such a way as to measure the lash between the inner tie rod and the steering gear housing. The lash between the inner tie rod and the steering gear housing is equal to the lash between the inner tie rod and the inner tie rod housing because the inner tie rod housing is inside the steering gear housing during this procedure.
- Grasping the tire at the 3 o'clock (2) and 9 o'clock (1) positions, gently push in on one side of the tire in order to remove any lash.
- Zero the GE-8001 dial indicator.
- On the same side of the tire previously pushed in, gently pull out and measure the lash.
- Record the measurement shown on the GE-8001 dial indicator.
- If the measured value exceeds 0.5 mm (0.02 in), replace the inner tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) .
- Repeat the procedure for the other side.
Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Inspection

GE-8001 Dial Indicator Set
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
- Inspect the outer tie rod seal. If the outer tie rod seal is torn, replace the outer tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) .
- Raise the side of the vehicle being inspected with a floor jack while maintaining contact between the opposite wheel and the shop floor. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack stand as far outboard as possible and remove the floor jack. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information) .
- Install the GE-8001 dial indicator between the outer tie rod and the steering knuckle as shown in the graphic. Note that the tire and wheel assembly is shown removed only for clarification of the GE-8001 dial indicator position.
- Grasping the tire at the 3 o'clock (2) and 9 o'clock (1) positions, gently push in on one side of the tire to remove any lash.
- Zero the GE-8001 dial indicator.
- On the same side of the tire previously pushed inwards, gently pull outwards and measure the lash.
- Record the measurement shown on the GE-8001 dial indicator.
- If the measured value exceeds 0.5 mm (0.02 in), replace the outer tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) .
- Repeat the procedure for the other side.
- Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with fluid to the minimum system level, the FULL COLD level, or the middle of the hash mark on the cap stick fluid level indicator, as applicable.
- Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information) .
- With the key in the ON position and with the engine OFF, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop 12 times. If the vehicle is equipped with longer length power steering hoses, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop 15 to 20 times.
- Verify the power steering fluid level. Refer to «Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system__checking-and-adding-power-steering-fluid) .
- Start the engine. Rotate the steering wheel from left to right. Inspect the power steering system for signs of cavitation or fluid aeration, like pump noise or whining.
- Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure, if necessary.
- Lower the vehicle.
Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid
- Run the engine until the power steering fluid reaches about 80°C (170°F).
- Turn the engine OFF.
- If equipped with the LF1 engine, remove the intake manifold cover. Refer to «Intake Manifold Cover Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-36l-lfx-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Clean the power steering fluid reservoir and the reservoir cap.
- Remove the reservoir cap.
- Inspect the power steering fluid level on the cap stick. Ensure that the fluid level is at the MAX mark on the cap stick.
- Add the proper fluid to the reservoir, if necessary. Refer to «Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system__adhesives-fluids-lubricants-and-sealers) .
- Install the reservoir cap.
- If equipped with the LF1 engine, install the intake manifold cover. Refer to «Intake Manifold Cover Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-36l-lfx-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
Note. Do not reuse any drained power steering fluid regardless of appearance or condition.
- Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information) .
- Place a large drain pan under the vehicle in order to collect the draining fluid.
- Remove the fluid return hose at the power steering fluid reservoir or the pump inlet connection, as applicable.
- Plug the reservoir return hose inlet connection on the power steering fluid reservoir or the pump, as applicable.
- Have an assistant maintain the minimum fluid level in the reservoir using clean, new power steering fluid. Refer to «Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system__checking-and-adding-power-steering-fluid) .
- With the key in the ON position and with the engine OFF, turn the steering wheel fully to the left and to the right. Continue until the fluid from the return hose runs clear.
- Remove the plug and install the fluid return hose to the power steering fluid reservoir or the pump inlet connection, as applicable.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) .
- Inspect the power steering fluid for the following indications of contamination: Milky fluid - water Brown fluid - burnt Plastic debris or dirt chunks
- If the fluid is contaminated, repeat steps 3-9.
- Remove the drain pan.
- Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure
- Place drain pans under the vehicle.
- Remove as much power steering fluid from the reservoir as possible.
- Remove the right front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) .
- Remove the front bumper fascia. Refer to «Front Bumper Fascia Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumpers-and-fascias__front-bumper-fascia-replacement) .
- Remove the bolt (4) from the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose bracket.
- Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose bracket from the body.
- Compress the hose clamp and disconnect the power steering fluid cooler outlet hose (1) from the power steering fluid reservoir inlet pipe (2).
- Compress the hose clamp and disconnect the power steering fluid cooler inlet hose from the power steering gear outlet pipe (3).
- Compress the hose clamp and disconnect the power steering fluid cooler inlet hose (3) from the power steering fluid cooler inlet pipe (2).
- Compress the hose clamp and disconnect the power steering fluid cooler outlet hose (4) from the power steering fluid cooler outlet pipe (1).
- Remove the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose assembly (2) from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Ensure the hole (1) in the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose bracket is large enough for the bolt. If necessary, cut or grind off the tab from the bracket.
- Position the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose assembly (2) in the vehicle.
- Compress the hose clamp and connect the power steering fluid cooler outlet hose (4) to the power steering fluid cooler outlet pipe (1).
- Compress the hose clamp and connect the power steering fluid cooler inlet hose (3) to the power steering fluid cooler inlet pipe (2).
- Compress the hose clamp and connect the power steering fluid cooler inlet hose to the power steering gear outlet pipe (3).
- Compress the hose clamp and connect the power steering fluid cooler outlet hose (1) to the power steering fluid reservoir inlet pipe (2).
- Connect the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose bracket to the body.
- Install the bolt (4) to the power steering fluid cooler inlet and outlet hose bracket and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
- Install the front bumper fascia. Refer to «Front Bumper Fascia Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumpers-and-fascias__front-bumper-fascia-replacement) .

- Loosen the hose clamp (1) and disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir inlet hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.
- Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/wheel-tire-system/#tires-and-wheels) .
- Remove the right front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) .
- Loosen the 2 hose clamps (1) and disconnect the power steering gear outlet and fluid reservoir inlet hoses from the power steering cooler.
- Disconnect the power steering gear outlet pipe (1) from the steering gear.
- Remove the power steering gear outlet pipe bracket fastener (2) from the power steering gear.
- Remove the power steering gear outlet and fluid reservoir inlet hose bracket fasteners (1).
- Remove the power steering gear outlet and fluid reservoir inlet hose as an assembly (2) from the vehicle.
- Position the power steering gear outlet and fluid reservoir inlet hose as an assembly (2) in the vehicle.
- Install the power steering gear outlet and fluid reservoir inlet hose bracket fasteners (1) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
- Install the power steering gear outlet pipe bracket fastener (2) to the power steering gear and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
- Connect the power steering gear outlet pipe (1) to the steering gear and tighten the fitting to 34 N.m (25 lb ft).
- Connect the power steering gear outlet and fluid reservoir inlet hoses to the power steering cooler and secure with the 2 hose clamps (1).
- Install the right front wheelhouse liner. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) .
- Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/wheel-tire-system/#tires-and-wheels) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the power steering fluid reservoir inlet hose to the power steering fluid reservoir and secure with the hose clamp (1).
- Remove the drain pans.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controlsfuel-36l-lfx-repair-instructions) .
- Install the intake manifold cover. Refer to «Intake Manifold Cover Replacement»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-36l-lfx-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) .
- Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle.

| CAUTION: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The steering shaft coupling The intermediate shaft(s) After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil. Preliminary Procedures With the wheels of the vehicle in the straight ahead position, lock the steering column. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement . Place drain pans under the vehicle. Remove as much power steering fluid from the reservoir as possible. Disconnect the front stabilizer shaft from the 2 stabilizer shaft links. Rotate the front stabilizer shaft as necessary for access. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement . Disconnect the 2 steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement . Disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose from the steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Gear Inlet Pipe/Hose Replacement (LHD and LF1, or LFW, or LFX) . Disconnect the power steering gear outlet hose and the outlet hose bracket from the steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Gear Outlet and Fluid Reservoir Inlet Hose Replacement (LHD and LF1, or LFW, or LFX) . Perform the following steps. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement . Support the front frame with a jack. If equipped with all wheel drive, remove the propeller shaft. Remove the rear transmission mount through bolt. Remove the rear frame-to-body bolts. Lower the rear part of the frame a maximum of 51 mm (2 in) in order to gain clearance for the steering gear. | |

Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Replacement
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information) .
- Place drain pans under the vehicle.
- Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the steering gear valve solenoid (3).
- Remove the 2 steering gear valve solenoid bolts (2, 4).
- Remove the steering gear valve solenoid from the steering gear.
- Install the steering gear valve solenoid (3) to the steering gear.
- Install the lower steering gear valve solenoid bolt (4) to the lower bolt hole and tighten to 0.5 N.m (4.4 lb in).
- Install the upper steering gear valve solenoid bolt (2) to the upper bolt hole and tighten to 1.5 N.m (13.3 lb in).
- Tighten the lower steering gear valve solenoid bolt to 2.9 N.m (25.7 lb in).
- Tighten the upper steering gear valve solenoid bolt to 2.9 N.m (25.7 lb in).
- Connect the electrical connector (1) to the steering gear valve solenoid.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(/cadillac/srx/ii-2012-2016/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) .
- Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle.
- Remove the drain pans.
The hydraulic power steering pump is a constant displacement vane-type pump that provides hydraulic pressure and flow for the power steering gear. The hydraulic power steering pumps are either belt-driven or direct-drive, cam-driven.
The power steering fluid reservoir holds the power steering fluid and may be integral with the power steering pump or remotely located. The following locations are typical locations for the remote reservoir
- Mounted to the front of the dash panel
- Mounted to the inner fender
- Mounted to a bracket on the engine
The 2 basic types of power steering gears are listed below
- A recirculating ball system
- A rack and pinion system
In the recirculating ball system, a worm gear converts steering wheel movement to movement of a sector shaft. A pitman arm attached to the bottom of the sector shaft actually moves one tie rod while an intermediate rod moves the other tie rod.
In the rack and pinion system, the rack and the pinion are the 2 components that convert steering wheel rotation to lateral movement. The steering shaft is attached to the pinion in the steering gear. The pinion rotates with the steering wheel. Gear teeth on the pinion mesh with the gear teeth on the rack. The rotating pinion moves the rack from side to side. The lateral action of the rack pushes and pulls the tie rods in order to change the direction of the vehicle's front wheels.
The power steering pressure hose connects the power steering pump union fitting to the power steering gear and allows pressurized power steering fluid to flow from the pump to the gear.
The power steering return hose returns fluid from the power steering gear back to the power steering fluid reservoir. The power steering return line may contain an integral fin-type or line-type power steering fluid cooler.
In a typical power steering system, a pump generates hydraulic pressure, causing fluid to flow, via the pressure hose, to the steering gear valve assembly. The steering gear valve assembly regulates the incoming fluid to the right and left chambers in order to assist in right and left turns.
Turning the steering wheel activates the valve assembly, which applies greater fluid pressure and flow to one side of the steering gear piston, and lower pressure and flow to the other side of the piston. The pressure assists the movement of the gear piston. Tie rods transfer this force to the front wheels, which turn the vehicle right or left.
Variable Effort Steering System Description and Operation
The variable effort steering system varies the amount of effort to steer the vehicle as wheel speed changes or lateral acceleration occurs. The electronic brake control module (EBCM) controls an actuator located in the steering rack and pinion. The actuator consists of an electromagnetic coil and a normally open pintle valve. The valve regulates an orifice that bleeds inlet pressure through a return passage to regulate the amount of pressure available for steering assist. The EBCM commands current from 0-1 A to the variable effort steering actuator which varies the amount of effort required to steer the vehicle. At high speeds, 1 A of current is commanded to the variable effort steering actuator and the pintle valve is fully closed which provides minimum pressure for a firm steering feel and directional stability. The variable effort steering system uses the steering wheel position sensor input to calculate lateral acceleration during abrupt driving maneuvers. The system also uses the antilock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor inputs to determine vehicle speed. The EBCM is constantly monitoring these inputs to achieve the desired current to the variable effort steering actuator. The EBCM has the ability to detect malfunctions in the variable effort steering actuator or the circuits to the actuator. Any malfunctions detected will cause the variable effort steering outputs to be disabled, and the actuator will return to an open state. The EBCM will command the driver information center to display the SERVICE STEERING SYSTEM warning message via a serial data circuit.
