DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

POWER WINDOWS

A permanent-magnet motor operates each power window. Each motor raises and lowers window when voltage is supplied by appropriate door module. Motor direction depends on polarity of supply voltage. Switches control supply voltage polarity.

The following components are used to control power windows

  1. Driver Door Module (DDM).
  2. Passenger Door Module (PDM).
  3. Left Rear Door Module (LRDM).
  4. Right Rear Door Module (RRDM).
  5. Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA).
  6. Right front power window switch.
  7. Left rear power window switch.
  8. Right rear power window switch.
  9. Left front power window motor.
  10. Right front power window motor.
  11. Left rear power window motor.
  12. Right rear power window motor.
  13. PWR WDO (30-amp) circuit breaker.

Vehicle is equipped with power windows, controlled by door modules. If Driver Door Module (DDM) receives a window switch request from a window switch integral to Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA), DDM check class 2 serial to verify if data status information is correct. If status information is correct, DDM will either supply power and ground to an associated window motor, or send a command through power door serial data line to appropriate door module, controlling window. Appropriate door module controlling window then supplies power and ground to an associated window motor, to move in requested direction.

When a window switch is operated, an associated door module examines request, and verifys if any messages from DDM are prohibiting movement. If conditions are correct, and no prohibitive messages have been received from DDM, associated door module then supplies power and ground to an associated window motor, to move in requested direction.

WINDOWS POWER & GROUND

Each door module has a separate battery voltage supply circuit for power window operation, but are all supplied by same 30-amp PWR EDO circuit breaker, located in rear fuse block. Each door module has a separate ground circuit for power window operation. These circuits are in same dedicated connector, as window motor drive circuits of each door module.

WINDOW MOTORS

Each door module has supplied battery voltage and ground, through window motor drive circuits, to appropriate window motor. Window motors are reversible. Direction window moves depends on which motor drive circuit battery voltage is applied to, and motor drive circuit ground is applied to. To move window in up direction, appropriate door module applies battery voltage to window motor up drive circuit, and ground to window motor down drive circuit. When a window movement in opposite direction is needed, appropriate door module reverses polarity, and supplies power and ground to opposite circuits to move window in reverse direction.

WINDOWS EXPRESS FEATURE

Driver Door Module (DDM) and Passenger Door Module PDM) have express up feature. This allows windows to be fully close by momentarily pressing appropriate window switch to second detent of window down position. Each front door window motor has a sensor mounted to it. These window sensors detect differences in their respective window motors electrical pulses, to determine if there is an obstruction of window glass. If a sensors detects that a passenger, or other obstacle, has become trapped between a window and window frame, it sends this information, through 2 communication circuits, to an associated door module. Door module then takes appropriate action and, either disables express up function, or reverses direction of window travel.

Each door module and corresponding sensor are wired to each other by 4 separate circuits to control express up function. Each front door module supplies battery voltage, through window sensor battery voltage circuit. Ground is supplied through window sensor low reference circuit, to sensor. Each door module communicates with sensor through 2 other separate and unique communication circuits. Communication circuits are, window sensor high speed communications circuit, which is a one-way communications line from sensor to associated module. Window sensor normal speed communications circuit, which is a 2-way communications line that carries information both ways, from sensor to associated module, and module to sensor. These communication lines are used for State-Of-Health (SOH) messages. Window switch command status, and communicate actual position of window glass in relationship to distance traveled by window.

If a any door module looses power for any reason, such as disconnecting battery, window motor must be reprogrammed, once power has been restored to door modules. Express up is available only on driver and passenger front door switch. Express down is available on all power window switches.

REAR WINDOW LOCK-OUT FEATURE

Rear window lock-out switch is integral to Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). When it is pressed momentarily, LED indicator is illuminated, and DDSA receives switch signal. DDSA sends a message over power door serial data line to Driver Door Module (DDM) indicating switch is active. DDM then sends a message over power door serial data line to both rear door modules, prohibiting rear windows from being operated from rear door window switches. Rear windows can still be operated from DDSA.

CAUTIONKeep windows clear of obstructions when programming, express up function.

Note. Procedure is necessary if battery power is lost, either by battery or front door module(s) being disconnected.

Note. Procedure is written for programming express up/down function using power window switches. Express up/down is available only on driver's door switch, and passenger front door switch. Express down mode is available for all power windows.

Perform the following procedure to program door window regulator motors

  1. Press and hold power window switch until window is fully down.
  2. Continue holding power window switch for about 3 seconds.
  3. Press and hold power window switch until window is fully up.
  4. Continue holding power window switch for about 3 seconds.
  5. Power window regulator motor is now programmed for express mode.
  6. Repeat this process for all power windows.

ADJUSTMENTS

Note. For adjustment procedure, refer to window motor regulator installation. See WINDOW MOTOR REGULATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Verify customer complaint by operating system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses. For fuse and/or relay identification, refer to illustrations. (Scheme 1) Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Check and ensure grounds are clean and tight. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS

Intermittent problem diagnosis requires duplication of circuit or component failure in order to identify problem. See TEST PROCEDURES . These procedures may lead to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) recording a DTC which may help diagnosis.

If system does not set a DTC, use scan tool or DVOM to monitor voltage or resistance values while attempting to reproduce conditions which will create an intermittent problem.

When monitoring voltage, ensure specified test conditions are met. When monitoring resistance, ensure ignition switch is in OFF position or negative battery cable is disconnected. A status change on scan tool or DVOM while performing test procedures indicates area of problem.

Intermittent Simulation

Use the following methods to reproduce conditions causing intermittent problem(s)

  1. Apply light vibration to components.
  2. Apply small amount of heat to component.
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  4. Remove/apply vacuum supply source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while attempting to simulate intermittent. If vehicle is running, monitor for DTCs. Use test results to identify problem component or circuit.

Symptom Definition

Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) comes on but does not stay on. A stored DTC may or may not exist.

Possible Causes & Corrections

This procedure is to determine possible causes of intermittent MIL operation. If problem is not found, duplicate intermittent condition, by performing the following

  1. Check for poor mating of one connector to another. Terminals may not be fully seated. Check for improperly formed or damaged terminals. Check wire-to-terminal connections.
  2. Check for poor connection from ignition coil to ground or arcing at spark plug wires or plugs.
  3. Check for poor connections at PCM ground terminals.
  4. Check for electrical system interference caused by defective relay, PCM-driven solenoid or switch, which may cause sharp electrical surge. This type of problem will normally occur when problem component is operated.
  5. Check for aftermarket parts which may not have been produced to manufacturer's specifications. Solenoids without original equipment diodes for circuit protection or voltage regulators using transistors instead of silicone-chip circuitry may cause voltage surges (up to 300 volts) in PCM wiring, causing temporary PCM shutdown. PCM shutdown is a normal response to system over voltage (over 16 volts on most models). PCM re-powers when condition ceases to exist. A rapid shutdown and re-power could cause a flickering MIL with no DTCs set in memory.
  6. Check for improper installation of electrical accessories such as auxiliary lights, cell phones or 2-way radios.
  7. Ensure ground wire from PCM to distributor or ignition module is connected to a good ground.
  8. Check for intermittent short to ground on data circuits of DLC or in MIL circuit. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  9. On vehicles not equipped with a driver information center, use scan tool to check for intermittent wiring problem. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

CAUTIONTo prevent damage to terminals, Connector Test Adaptor Kit (J-35616-A) must be used whenever a diagnostic procedure requires checking or probing terminals. To locate and identify terminals and circuits, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

Description

Window switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is mounted on passenger door and wired to appropriate door module. When switch is activated, appropriate door module examines switch signal and determines if conditions are correct for window function. If conditions are correct, door module then supplies power and ground to appropriate window motor and circuits to operate window. Window motors are reversible. When an up movement is requested, module applies battery voltage to up circuit and ground to down circuit. When a down movement is requested, module reverses polarity, and applies battery voltage to down circuit, and ground to up circuit. If Driver Door Module (DDM) receives a message from a door module indicating a window switch is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, DDM will store DTC. When DTC is stored, action taken depends on which switch contacts are closed for 15 continuous seconds or more. The following are possible actions taken, when DTC is stored

  1. If up switch contact is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, both up and down movements are disabled until up switch contact is no longer closed, or ignition switch is cycled from OFF to RUN positions.
  2. If down switch contact is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, only down movement is disabled until down switch contact is no longer closed, or ignition switch is cycled from OFF to RUN positions. Up movement is operational regardless of down switch state.
  3. If express switch contact is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, express movement is disabled until express switch contact is no longer closed, or ignition switch is cycled from OFF to RUN position.

DDM clears current DTC, when switch message is not received, or ignition switch is cycled from OFF to RUN positions.

Code Enable Criteria

The following criteria must be met for DTC to run

  1. PDM, LRDM, or RRDM must be powered.
  2. DTCs B1327 or B1328 cannot be stored.

Testing

  1. If door systems diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If door systems diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform door systems diagnostic system check. Window switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a window switch integral to Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). There are no external circuits involved. DDSA contains a microprocessor which takes signal generated by switch and assigns a digital message to it. DDSA then sends this message over class 2 serial data line to appropriate door module. Door module controlling window operation requested examines information to determine if conditions are correct for operation to occur. If conditions are correct, door module controlling window then provides power and ground to appropriate window motor. Window motors are reversible. When an up movement is requested, door module applies battery voltage to up circuit and ground to down circuit. For a down movement, door module reverses polarity, and applies battery voltage to down circuit, and ground to up circuit.

  1. If DDSA up window switch is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, both up and down signals from switch will be ignored until input is no longer detected, or ignition switch is cycled from OFF to RUN positions.
  2. If DDSA down window switch is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, down signals from switch will be ignored until input is no longer detected, or ignition switch is cycled from OFF to RUN positions. Window up function from that switch will still be operational.
  3. If DDSA express window switch is closed for 15 continuous seconds or more, express signals from switch will be ignored until DDSA no longer detects input.
  4. All windows will operate normally from respective window switch.

DDM clears current DTC when switch signal is no longer received, or ignition switch cycled from OFF to RUN positions.

The following criteria must be met for DTC to run

  1. DDM and DDSA must be powered
  2. DTCs B1327 or B1328 cannot be stored.
  1. If door systems diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If door systems diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform door systems diagnostic system check. See «DOOR SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__door-systems-diagnostic-system-check) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe suspect driver window switch parameter in Driver Door Module (DDM) inputs list. If parameter displays IDLE, go to next step. If parameter does not display IDLE, go to step 4 .
  3. Using scan tool, observe suspect driver window switch parameter in DDM inputs list. Activate window switch through all positions, and observe scan tool. If parameter does not change state, go to next step. If parameter changes state, problem may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittents, see «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__preliminary-inspection) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  4. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in DDSA harness connector. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 6 .
  5. Replace DDSA. See «WINDOW SWITCH ASSEMBLY»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__window-switch-assembly) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  6. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. See «CODE ENABLE CRITERIA»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If DTCs do not reset, testing is complete. If DTCs reset, go to step 2 .

Window lock-out switch that failed and generated this Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is integral to Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA). There are no external circuits involved. DDSA contains a microprocessor which takes ground signal generated by window lock-out switch and assigns a digital message. DDSA then sends this message over class 2 serial data line to Left Rear Door Module (LRDM) and Right Rear Door Module (RRDM) prohibiting window operation from either rear window switch. When lock-out is active, rear windows will not be operational from either rear window switch. Rear windows can still function using DDSA. When Driver Door Module (DDM) receives information that switch has been closed for 30 continuous seconds or more, DTC will be stored. When DTC is stored, DDM ignores inputs from window lock-out switch. DDM clears current DTC when message is no longer received from switch.

The following criteria must be met for DTC to set

  1. Switch input is checked every 300 milliseconds regardless of source voltage.
  1. If door systems diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If door systems diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform door systems diagnostic check. See «DOOR SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__door-systems-diagnostic-system-check) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to data link connector (dlc). dlc is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. turn ignition switch to run position. using scan tool, observe window lock-out switch parameter in Driver Door Switch Assembly (DDSA) inputs list. If parameter displays IDLE, go to next step. If parameter does not display IDLE, go to step 4 .
  3. Activate window lock-out switch through all positions. Using scan tool, observe window lock-out switch parameter in DDSA inputs list.
If DTC does not reset, testing is complete. If DTC resets, go to step 2 .

Diagnostic Aids

An intermittently sticking switch can cause this DTC to store.

Express up function of front door power windows is monitored and controlled by both front door modules and window sensors. Each front door window motor has a window sensor mounted to it. Driver door module (DDM) and Passenger Door Module (PDM) each supply battery voltage and ground to power their respective window sensors. Each door module communicates with sensor through window sensor high speed communications circuit, and a window sensor normal speed communications circuit. Window sensor detects differences in window motors electrical pulses to determine if an obstruction to travel of front door window glass. Door modules use this information generated by sensors to disable express up movement of a window, or reverse direction of travel, in event a passenger, or other obstacle, has become trapped in it. Window sensor normal speed communications circuit is a 2-way serial data link between appropriate door module and sensor. Actual position of window glass is communicated through this circuit, as well as State-Of-Health (SOH) messages, and window switch command status. When sensor does not know actual position of window glass, and a "not normalized/not initialized" message is sent, DTC will be stored to appropriate door module. When DTC is stored, DDM or PDM will not allow express up function for appropriate window. All other window functions will still operate. DDM will clear current DTC when either DDM or PDM detects a corresponding sensor is no longer sending message.

The following criteria must be met for DTC to set

  1. DDM and PDM must be powered.
  2. DTCs B1327 or B1328 cannot be stored.
  1. If door systems diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If door systems diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform door systems diagnostic system check. See «DOOR SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__door-systems-diagnostic-system-check) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If no other DTCs are retrieved with B3832 or B3832, go to next step. If DTC B3832 is retrieved with U1713 and U1714, repair "U" DTCs first. If DTC B3833 is retrieved with DTCs U1715 and U1716, repair "U" DTCs first. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - SEVILLE article.
  3. Attempt to operate suspect window to UP, DOWN, and EXPRESS DOWN positions. If window operates in all positions, go to next step. If window does not operate in any position, repair by symptom. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system) table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Perform window motor programming procedure. See «WINDOW MOTOR - EXPRESS MODE»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__window-motor-express-mode) under PROGRAMMING. After programming, go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. See «CODE ENABLE CRITERIA»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If DTC does not reset, problem may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittents, see «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__preliminary-inspection) under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If DTC resets, go to next step.
  6. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in window motor harness connector. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 8 .
  7. Replace suspect window motor. See «WINDOW MOTOR REGULATOR»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__window-motor-regulator) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  8. Perform window motor programming procedure. See «WINDOW MOTOR - EXPRESS MODE»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system__window-motor-express-mode) under PROGRAMMING. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. See «CODE ENABLE CRITERIA»(/cadillac/seville/v-1998-2004/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . If DTC does not reset, testing is complete. If DTC resets, go to step 2 .

If DTC B3832 or B3833 are retrieved with DTCs U1714 or U1716, diagnose "U" DTCs first. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - SEVILLE article. Express up function will be disabled when DTC B3832 or B3833 is stored. If power has been lost due to disconnecting battery, perform window motor programming. See WINDOW MOTOR - EXPRESS MODE under PROGRAMMING. If DTC B3832 or B3833 are retrieved, and power has not been lost, possible cause for DTC may be window sensor failure.
