INTRODUCTION
Parameter Identification (PID) mode allows access to certain data values, analog and digital inputs and outputs, calculated values, and system status information. There are 2 types of PID lists available. The first is a General Motors specific PID list that can be accessed by using a Tech II scan tool. The second is a Generic OBD-II PID list. This is a standard set of PIDs that all manufacturer's scan tools can access.
PID VALUE tables are used for diagnosing intermittent symptoms and faults that are unable to be resolved during self-diagnostics. PID values are continuously updated when accessing PIDs from a specific PID list. Before performing tests, ensure engine mechanical condition has been inspected and self-diagnostics has been attempted. Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) may also be helpful in correcting a hard to diagnose problem.
PID VALUES
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Note. See appropriate PID VALUE table for vehicle application.
Engine Data 1
Contains general information regarding fuel delivery, IAC position, HO2S 1, HO2S 2, and other basic engine operating conditions.
Engine Data 2
Contains general information regarding ECT, IAT, MAF, MAP, and other basic engine operating conditions.
EGR Data
Contains information specific to EGR system. This list displays parameters required to verify proper EGR system operation.
EVAP Data
Contains information specific to EVAP system. This list displays parameters required to verify proper EVAP system operation.
Fuel Trim Data
Contains information specific to fuel trim operation. This list displays parameters required to verify proper fuel trim operation.
Misfire Data
Contains information specific to misfire diagnostics. This list displays parameters required to verify proper operation with regard to misfire.
Output Driver Data
Contains information specific to output driver circuits. This data monitors circuit status and circuit history.
PID VALUE TABLES
Ensure following conditions are met before comparing scan tool data to typical data value found in appropriate PID value table
- Engine is idling unless checking a value at a specified RPM.
- Throttle is closed unless checking a value at a specified RPM.
- Vehicle is in Park or Neutral.
- Vehicle is operating in closed loop.
- Vehicle accessories are turned off.
Compare actual PID values on scan tool to PID values found in appropriate PID VALUE TABLE. If PID value is not as specified, perform appropriate SYSTEM TEST in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
