COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING
| WARNING | Ensure engine and radiator are cool before opening cooling system. |
- Turn cap in counterclockwise direction until it reaches the stop. DO NOT press down on cap. Wait until any remaining pressure (indicated by a hissing sound) is released. After pressure is released, press down on cap and continue to rotate counterclockwise and remove from surge tank.
- If system has been drained, add 3 coolant pellets (P/N 3634621) to upper radiator hose. Fill system with about 9.5 qts. (9L) of 50/50 ethylene glycol-water mix by slowly pouring mixture into surge tank until coolant is above weld line or in the indicated safe zone.
- Install surge tank pressure cap and align arrows on cap with overflow hose. Start engine and check for leaks. With system at operating temperature (about 226° F), heater core circuit and upper left hand corner of radiator core should be hot.
- If heater core and upper left hand corner of radiator core remain cold, raise engine speed to no more than 2000 RPM, to increase flow until these areas are warm. Shut off engine and allow system to cool.
- Remove cap and check coolant level. Add Sufficient coolant to bring level slightly above weld line visible inside bottle. Install surge tank pressure cap.

- Remove both cam sprocket bolts. (Note and mark location of cam drive pins in end of camshafts). Work sprockets off cams using play in chain.
- Alternately loosen cam bearing cap screws a few turns at a time until all valve spring pressure has been released. Remove bolts and caps. Remove camshafts.
Inspection
Whenever a camshaft is removed the lobes should be visually checked. Excessive wear, scoring or flaking of the lifter will usually denote camshaft lobe wear. Excessive camshaft lobe wear is evidenced by grooves, scoring or flaking. Camshaft should be replace if any of these conditions exist. Bearing journals should not be scored or burned.
- Apply prelube (1052365) to face of each cam lobe. Position camshaft and bearing caps on head. Loosely install bearing cap bolts. NOTE: Each cap is identified for position and direction. Arrow points to front of engine. "E" indicates exhaust cam. "I" indicates intake cam. Position No. 1 is toward front of engine.
- Alternately tighten bearing cap bolts a few turns at a time until all bolts are snug. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/cadillac/seville/iv-1992-1997/remont/mechanical/#46l-v8-vins-y9__torque-specifications) .
- Use hex cast into camshaft to adjust cams until drive pins are in position to engage cam sprockets over cams and then start retaining bolts. Work sprockets over cams and tighten retaining bolts to specification. To finish installation, reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 22
Note. Setting camshaft timing is necessary whenever cam drive system has been disturbed such that the relationship between any chain and sprocket has been lost. Even when only one sprocket is involved the timing procedure should be observed since one crankshaft revolution will not confirm correct timing.
Note. The camshafts and crankshaft are correctly timed when the relationships shown in Fig. (Scheme 23) exist. Correct timing exists when crank sprocket and intermediate shaft sprocket have their timing marks aligned and all 4 camshaft drive pins are perpendicular to cylinder head surface. (Scheme 23)
Scheme 23
- Remove cam covers. See «CAM COVER(S)»(/cadillac/seville/iv-1992-1997/remont/mechanical/#46l-v8-vins-y9). Remove front cover. Install intermediate sprocket retaining bolt and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/cadillac/seville/iv-1992-1997/remont/mechanical/#46l-v8-vins-y9__torque-specifications).
- Route secondary chain for left hand cylinder head over inner row of intermediate shaft teeth. Route secondary drive chain over chain guide and install exhaust cam sprocket to chain so that camshaft drive pin engages sprocket notch marked LE (left head exhaust). There should be no slack in lower section of chain and cam drive pin must be perpendicular to cylinder head face. (Scheme 23)
- Install intake cam sprocket into chain so the sprocket notch marked LI (left head intake) engages cam drive pin while pin remains perpendicular to head face. Minor cam positioning adjustments can be made using open end wrench on hex cast into camshaft.
- Install sprocket retainer bolts and chain tensioner and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/cadillac/seville/iv-1992-1997/remont/mechanical/#46l-v8-vins-y9__torque-specifications).
- Route secondary chain for right hand cylinder head over outer row of intermediate shaft teeth and repeat steps No. 6) 8). Right hand cam sprockets are identified RI (right intake) and RE (right exhaust). In addition, RE sprocket must contain cam position sensor pickup.

Measure inside diameter of guide with hole gauge, crosswise to engine, at top and .394" (10 mm) from bottom of guide, measuring gauge each time with micrometer. A standard valve guide is .235" (5.979 mm). Measure valve stem with micrometer and subtract from greater of 2 guide measurements to obtain maximum clearance. If clearance is greater than .0005" (.12 mm) action is indicated. If a NEW standard diameter valve stem doesn't bring clearance within tolerance, cylinder head must be replaced. Valve guide wear in the bottom .394" (10 mm) of valve guide is not significant to normal operation.
Valve Seat
Manufacturer does not recommend seat replacement.
Valves
Measure valve head diameter, stem diameter and margin. Replace valve if head diameter, stem diameter or margin are not within specification. See VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. DO NOT lap NEW valves, as protective coating will be damaged. Lightly lap reused valves.
Valve Seat Correction Angles
After grinding, if seat is too wide, use 20-degree and/or 70-degree stones to narrow the seat.
Fitting Pistons
Measure piston diameter 1.81" (46 mm) below top of piston at 90-degree angle to piston pin. Measure cylinder bore 2" (51 mm) below top of cylinder. If piston clearance is not to specification, replace piston. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
Piston Rings
Note. Piston ring installion contains updated information from General Motors technical service bulletin 67-61-08.
Each piston has 2 compression rings and a side-seal type oil ring that incorporates a steel expander and 2 identical chrome plated steel rails. Top compression ring is molybdenum filled steel. Second compression ring is coated cast iron. When replacing piston rings, install only re-ring sets that have molybdenum filled upper compression ring and multi-piece oil rings. Top compression ring may be installed either side up. Second compression ring has a locating dimple identifying top side. Measure piston ring end gap and side clearance. If end gap and side clearance are not to specification, replace rings and/or piston. Whenever removal and installation of the piston rings of a 4.6L Northstar or 4.0L Aurora engine is necessary, you must install the oil ring expander with the ends of the expander facing toward the top of the piston. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure ring end gaps are correctly spaced around piston. (Scheme 30)and (Scheme 31).

Rod Bearings
Ensure tangs on bearings are positioned in notches on rod and cap before tightening cap nuts. Measure rod bearing oil clearance. Replace bearing if clearance exceeds specification. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
Crankshaft & Main Bearings
Shell type main bearings of steel backed aluminum are used at all positions. Upper halves are interchangeable, as are the lower halves except for the bearings in No. 3 position (thrust bearing). To service main bearings, engine must be removed from vehicle. See CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARINGS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
Thrust Bearing
To measure crankshaft end play, pry crankshaft to extreme forward position. Using feeler gauge, measure distance between crankshaft thrust face and thrust face of No. 3 bearing (front side of bearing). When using a dial indicator, mount indicator on block beside flywheel flange and measure crankshaft movement when prying crank back and forth. If not within specification, replace thrust bearing and/or crankshaft as necessary. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
Cylinder Block
Cylinder block deck warpage information is not available from manufacturer.
Description
Gerotor oil pump is mounted to lower crankcase behind front cover and drive is furnished by the clamp load on harmonic balancer from its mounting bolt. Pump draws oil from sump through sump pickup and cast-in channels to pump. Oil, pressurized by pump, enters lower crankcase distribution channel through pump outlet. Oil is routed through oil filter/cooler circuit to the engine.
Scheme 32
Crankcase Capacity
Oil capacity is 7.5 qts. (7.0L) with filter.
Oil Pressure
Oil pressure is 5 psi (35 kPa) at idle and 35 psi (250 kPa) at 2000 RPM.
Scheme 33
- Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(/cadillac/seville/iv-1992-1997/remont/mechanical/#46l-v8-vins-y9) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove 3 oil pump mounting bolts. (Scheme 33) Remove pump and drive gear.
- Remove drive spacer from pump housing. Remove 2 screws holding pump halves together. Remove inner (drive) and outer (driven) rotors from housing and mark for reassembly. Remove pressure relief valve. (Scheme 34)
Scheme 34
Inspect pump housing for nicks, burrs, chips or debris that might cause a leak or binding in rotor pocket. Inspect drive and driven rotors for nicks or burns. Check pump cover and interior surface for excessive wear or score marks. Check for flatness.
- Lubricate rotors with engine oil and install in pump cover with same orientation as when removed. Install pressure relief valve seat, spring and pilot in pump housing.
- Assemble housing and cover over locating dowel. Insert 3/8" (9.5 mm) drill bit into the pump mounting hole on side opposite dowel, to aid alignment of housing and cover. Install 2 screws and tighten to 106 INCH lbs. (12 N.m).
- Install oil pump drive spacer into oil pump from rear so drive flat engages pump rotor. Position pump over crankshaft. Loosely install screws. Hold pump in its furthest up position while tightening screws. Tighten screws to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/cadillac/seville/iv-1992-1997/remont/mechanical/#46l-v8-vins-y9__torque-specifications) . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
