Engine Removal Cadillac Fleetwood 75 Series

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot mechanical engine components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

2.0L (122")

  1. Disconnect battery cables at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. If equipped, remove power steering pump. Remove window washer bottle.
  2. If A/C equipped, remove relay bracket at bulkhead connector. Remove bulkhead connector. If equipped, remove cruise control servo bracket. Disconnect all vacuum hoses and wiring to engine.
  3. Remove bolts attaching vacuum booster-to-master cylinder. Lay vacuum booster aside. Remove heater hose at hot water pipe. Remove fan assembly. Remove horn. Remove fuel injection linkage.
  4. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove heater hose and fuel line at intake manifold. If equipped, remove A/C compressor brace. Remove exhaust shield. Remove starter. Remove exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove front tires.
  5. Remove stabilizer at lower control arms. Remove ball joints from steering knuckle. Remove drive axles at transaxle. Remove transaxle strut. If A/C equipped, remove inner fender shield, drive belt and compressor.
  6. Remove rear motor mount nuts and plate. If equipped with automatic transaxle, remove oil filter. On all models, remove speedometer cable. Lower vehicle.
  7. On automatic transaxles, remove cooler lines at transaxle. Remove detent cable at transaxle. On manual transaxles, remove clutch cable at transaxle.
  8. On all models, remove transaxle mount. Install engine lift and remove engine.

4.1L (250") & 6.0L (368")

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. On RWD models, remove 2 screws attaching radiator cover to strut support rods at radiator cover. Remove 1 screw from each side of strut. Move support rod aside.
  2. On all models, remove 2 screws attaching top radiator shroud to radiator support. Remove rivets securing upper fan shroud to lower fan shroud.
  3. Remove screws and washers attaching radiator cover to radiator support and remove cover. Remove 2 screws attaching power steering reservoir to upper fan shroud. Position reservoir aside and remove shroud.
  4. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect upper radiator hose from thermostat housing. Disconnect all wires to engine. Disconnect all vacuum hoses to engine. Disconnect accelerator linkage from carburetor.
  5. Disconnect vapor canister hose. Remove clutch fan assembly. Reposition drain pan and disconnect lower radiator hose at water pump. Disconnect A/C compressor from engine and position aside with hoses attached.
  6. Disconnect water line from coolant reservoir to water pump. Remove hose from water nipple, located in rear of intake manifold on 4.1L models and in rear of right cylinder head on 6.0L models. Disconnect fuel inlet and return lines at carburetor.
  7. Disconnect engine oil cooler lines. Remove transmission-to-engine screws. Raise vehicle. Remove front engine mount-to-frame crossmember nuts on FWD models and motor mount through bolts on RWD models.
  8. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Remove flywheel-to-converter screws. Disconnect starter motor wiring and remove starter motor, if necessary. Support exhaust system. Disconnect exhaust manifold pipe and remove exhaust system.
  9. Lower vehicle. Support transmission. Install engine lift. Raise engine slowly to disengage from transmission and remove engine.

5.7L (350") Diesel FWD

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator support. Remove air cleaner and install cover over air intake port in intake manifold. Mark hood and hinges for reassembly reference. Remove hood.
  2. Disconnect engine ground strap. Remove fan and fan shroud together. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses at engine. Disconnect transmission and engine oil cooler lines at radiator. Disconnect heater hoses from water pump and water control valve.
  3. Disconnect electrical lines at alternator. Remove alternator with upper brace. Remove power steering pump bracket. Position power steering pump aside with lines connected. Remove A/C compressor and position aside with hoses and brackets attached.
  4. Disconnect all fuel lines to engine. Disconnect accelerator rod detent cable. Disconnect all vacuum hoses from engine. Disconnect all electrical connections. Remove cooler line bracket. Disconnect left exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove upper mount heat shield.
  5. On left side, remove through bolt and bracket securing final drive-to-engine. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove splash shield. Remove flywheel shield. Remove right exhaust pipe at manifold. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
  6. Remove 3 converter-to-flywheel bolts. Partially lower vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right exhaust manifold. Disconnect oil cooler lines at filter adapter and remove oil filter adapter. Raise vehicle.
  7. Remove 2 bolts securing right output shaft support brackets. Scribe around washers for reassembly alignment reference. Remove lower right transmission-to-engine bolts. Attach final drive support chain. Lower vehicle. Attach engine lift.
  8. Move engine oil cooler pipes rearward. Remove radiator. Remove water control valve. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Raise or lower transmission to free engine. Remove engine.

5.7L (350") Diesel RWD

  1. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and install cover over air intake port in intake manifold. Mark hood and hinges for assembly reference.
  2. Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cables at batteries. Disconnect engine ground strap, from right cylinder head to cowl.
  3. Remove radiator hoses, cooler lines and heater hoses. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect power steering hoses from steering gear. Remove A/C compressor and position aside with hoses and brackets attached.
  4. Disconnect fuel line from fuel pump. Remove hairpin clip at bellcrank. Remove throttle and T.V. cables from intake manifold and position aside. Remove upper radiator support. Remove radiator.
  5. Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds. Remove torque converter cover. Remove 3 bolts attaching converter-to-flywheel. Remove motor mount bolts or nuts. Remove 3 bolts attaching transmission-to-engine on right side.
  6. Disconnect wires from starter and remove starter. Lower vehicle. Attach engine lift. Place a board on top of a jack and slightly raise transmission. Remove 3 bolts, on left side, attaching transmission-to-engine. Remove engine.
