Refrigerant Leak Testing
Note. All A/C system repairs must be verified using electronic leak detection. Dye detection may take up 2 or 3 days to be reliable.
Note. General Motors vehicles are now manufactured with fluorescent dye installed directly into the air conditioning (A/C) system.
The fluorescent dye mixes and flows with the refrigerant oil throughout the refrigerant system.
Verifying some passive leaks may require using the GE-50078: Infrared Refrigerant Leak Detector, even though the A/C system contains fluorescent dye.
The only time that adding additional fluorescent dye is required is after flushing the A/C system. Excessive dye can result in compressor damage.
Visual Inspection
Visually trace the entire refrigerant system and look for signs of lubricant leakage, damage, and corrosion on all lines hoses and components (Oil can be an indication of a leak). Each questionable area should be checked for leaks using an electronic leak detector.
Fluorescent Leak Detector
Note. Always use UV protective eyewear when working with UV light.
Fluorescent dye will assist in locating any leaks in the A/C system.
- Condensation on the evaporator core or the refrigerant lines may wash the PAG oil and fluorescent dye away from the actual leak. Condensation may also carry dye through the HVAC module drain.
- Leaks in the A/C system will be indicated in a light green or yellow color when using the leak detection lamp. Use the leak detection lamp in the following areas: All fittings or connections that use seal washers or O-rings All of the A/C components The A/C compressor shaft seal The A/C hoses and pressure switches The HVAC module drain tube, if the evaporator core is suspected of leaking The service port sealing caps The sealing cap is the primary seal for the service ports.
- Follow the instructions supplied with the GE-42220: lamp.
- To prevent false diagnosis in the future, thoroughly clean the residual dye from any area where leaks were found. Use a rag and the approved GE-43872: cleaner.
Fluorescent Dye Injection
- Not all of the fluorescent dyes are compatible with GM refrigerant systems. Using dyes not approved by GM may damage the vehicle's refrigerant system.
- To prevent false diagnosis, thoroughly clean any residual dye from the service port with a rag and the approved fluorescent dye cleaner GE-43872: dye cleaner.
Electronic Leak Detection
Infrared detectors operate differently than heated sensor type detectors. They detect changes in concentration of refrigerant rather than absolute concentration. If the tip is held at a detected leak for more than 5 seconds the detector will saturate and zero to that concentration and will no longer detect leaks at that concentration or less. Move tip away from the leak saturation area for 30 seconds to reset the sensitivity of the detector.
Adequate system pressure is required for effective leak detection.
- If system is empty install 10% of system charge.
- Temperature must be above 60 F.
- Soap solutions (not effective for leak detection)
- Shop air (will introduce contamination to the refrigerant system)
- High pressure gasses i.e. nitrogen (may cause system damage
Air movement from the engine cooling fan can affect the detectors ability to detect leaks. Always leak test with engine off and if possible after engine has reached normal operating temperature.
- All fittings and components should be checked.
- Take care not to contaminate the probe tip if the part being tested is contaminated.
- No cleaners containing solvents should be used prior to using electronic leak detector.
- Always follow the refrigerant system around in a continuous path so that no areas of potential leaks are missed. Move the tip along the refrigerant system at a rate of no more than 3 inches per second and a distance of 3/8 inch from the surface being tested. If a leak is found, always continue to test the remainder of the system.

Replacing System Dye After Flushing
Note. Do not add dye to the refrigerant system equipped with high voltage electric compressors. The only means of replenishing dye after flushing is by replacing component containing the dye. Currently a compatible dye wafer is contained in the O.E. desiccant package. Adding dye that is not compatible with the high voltage electric compressor may cause compressor damage and high voltage isolation faults.

When the blower motor fan is turned on, the microbial growth may release an unpleasant musty odor into the passenger compartment. To remove odors of this type, the microbial growth must be eliminated. Perform the following procedure
Deodorize the evaporator core using Deodorizing Aerosol Kit.
Perform the following steps in order to deodorize the A/C system
- Ensure that the plenum which draws outside air into the HVAC module is clear of debris.
- Disable the A/C compressor clutch operation by disconnecting the clutch coil electrical connector.
- Dry the evaporator core by performing the following steps: Start the engine. Select the warmest temperature setting. Select the recirculation mode. Run the blower motor on high for 10 minutes.
- Locate an area in the air conditioning duct between the blower motor and the evaporator core downstream of the blower motor.
- Drill a 3.175 mm (0.125 in) hole where the hole will not interfere with or damage the following components: The blower motor The evaporator core Any other operating part the of system
- Wear safety goggles and latex gloves in order to perform the following actions: Select the maximum blower speed. Insert the deodorizer extension tube into the hole to the mark on the extension tube. Use short spray bursts and vary the direction of spray for a 2-3 minute period of time.
- Shut the engine OFF. Allow the vehicle to sit for 3-5 minutes.
- Seal the 3.175 mm (0.125 in) hole with body sealer or RTV gasket compound.
- Start the engine.
- Operate the blower motor on high for 15-20 minutes to dry.
- Reconnect the A/C compressor clutch coil electrical connector.
- Verify proper clutch operation.

The J 43600: service center is a complete air conditioning service center for R-134a. The ACR 2000 recovers, recycles, evacuates and recharges A/C refrigerant quickly, accurately and automatically. The unit has a display screen that contains the function controls and displays prompts that will lead the technician through the recover, recycle, evacuate and recharge operations. R-134a is recovered into and charged out of an internal storage vessel. The ACR 2000 automatically replenishes this vessel from an external source tank in order to maintain a constant 5.45-6.82 kg (12-15 lbs) of A/C refrigerant.
The ACR 2000 has a built in A/C refrigerant identifier that will test for contamination, prior to recovery and will notify the technician if there are foreign gases present in the A/C system. If foreign gases are present, the ACR 2000 will not recover the refrigerant from the A/C system.
The ACR 2000 also features automatic air purge, single pass recycling and an automatic oil drain.
Refer to the J 43600: service center manual for operation and setup instruction. Always recharge the A/C System with the proper amount of R-134a. Refer to Refrigerant System Specifications (HP2) for the correct amount.
A/C Refrigerant System Oil Charge Replenishing
If POE oil was removed from the A/C system during the recovery process or due to component replacement, the oil must be replenished. POE Oil can be injected into a charged system using J 45037: injector along with GE 48997: adapter hose. For the proper quantities of oil to add to the A/C refrigerant system, refer to Refrigerant System Specifications (HP2) .

ACR2000 (J-43600) Hose Flush Procedure
| IMPORTANT | The following hose flushing procedure must be performed every time the ACR2000 (J-43600) is used on the hybrid vehicles. It must be completed before the ACR2000 (J-43600) is connected to the vehicle to begin a diagnostic or service procedure. The high voltage (HV) electric air conditioning (A/C) compressor on these two-mode hybrid vehicles uses a polyolester (POE) refrigerant oil instead of a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) synthetic refrigerant oil. This is due to the better electrical resistance of the POE oil and its ability to provide HV isolation. The following hose flush procedure is required to prevent oil cross-contamination. Laboratory testing has shown that flushing the ACR2000 (J-43600) using the following procedure will minimize oil cross-contamination to a negligible amount (<500ppm). Failure to flush the ACR2000 (J-43600) hoses before adding refrigerant to a hybrid vehicle with an electric A/C compressor may result in an unacceptable amount of PAG oil entering the refrigerant system. It may also cause a battery energy control module hybrid battery voltage system isolation lost diagnostic trouble code (DTC P1AE7) to be set. Additionally the A/C system warranty will be voided. The ACR2000 (J-43600) will need to be retrofitted with a J-43600-50 (Hose-ACR2000 Oil Flush Loop) to be able to perform the following procedure. All hybrid dealers will receive a J-43600-50, with installation instructions, which is a component of the hybrid essential tool package. Dealers not included in the hybrid marketing plan and needing to service a hybrid vehicle can obtain the J-43600-50 from SPX Kent Moore, 1-800-GM-TOOLS (1-800-468-6657). The J-43600-50 Retrofit Kit replaces the existing hose mount fittings on the ACR2000. Installation instructions are included to properly update the ACR2000 for hybrid vehicle A/C service. New hybrid compliant A/C refrigerant recharging equipment (GE-48800) will be released in January 2008 for dealers to replace current ACR2000 equipment. GE-48800 meets new SAE refrigerant recovery standard J-2788 and is specially designed for GM hybrid vehicle A/C service. |
Before Beginning the Hose Flushing Procedure
- Always allow the ACR2000 to complete the hose flush cycle to assure that all oil and refrigerant is removed from the hoses and the ACR2000 flow control circuit.
- Assure the ACR2000 has at least 4.08 kg (9 lb) of chargeable refrigerant before proceeding.
- A Low Filter Flow message displayed during the hose flushing process indicates that the hose couplers are not connected or open.
- Connect the ACR2000 service hose couplers to the J-43600-50 hose flush adapter fittings and open the service hose coupler valves.
- Power on the ACR2000.
- If there is positive pressure in the ACR2000 service hoses, press START to recover the service hoses. If there is 88-98 kPa (26-29 Hg) of vacuum showing on the display screen, skip to step 7.
- Press Vacuum.
- Press Start. Allow the vacuum program to run until the display screen shows between 88-98 kPa (26-29 Hg).
- Press Pause.
- Press Main Menu.
- Press Scroll Menu.
- Press Oil Flush.
- Press Next.
- Enter 03:00 (for a three minute flush) and press Start.
- The ACR2000 will now flush the service hoses for three minutes and then recover the refrigerant
- Close the ACR2000 service hose couplers and remove the J-43600-50 hose flush adapter.
- The ACR2000 can now be connected to the hybrid vehicle to perform the A/C system diagnostic or service procedures.

Flushing is intended to remove the following contaminants
- Contaminated polyolester (POE) oil
- Desiccant, following a desiccant bag failure
- Overcharge of POE oil
- Refrigerant contamination

- Remove the orifice tube. - Connect the A/C lines with the orifice tube removed.

- Inspect the end of the suction hose for a suction screen.
- Remove the suction screen, if installed.
- Install J 45268-4 to the A/C compressor suction hose.
- Install J 45268-5 to the A/C compressor discharge hose.
- Forward flow refrigerant flushing is recommended for contaminated refrigerant or POE oil. Perform the following procedure: IMPORTANT: The filter inside the J 45268-1 is serviceable. Remove and discard the check valve from the filter. Service the filter with ACDelco P/N GF 470, before each flush. Connect the J 45268-1 flush filter to the suction port of the J 45268-4 flush adapter. Connect the blue hose from the J 43600 to the J 45268-1 flush filter adapter. - Reverse flow refrigerant flushing is recommended for desiccant bag failure. Perform the following procedure and replace the accumulator when the flush procedure is complete. IMPORTANT: The filter inside the J 45268-1 is serviceable. Remove and discard the check valve from the filter. Service the filter with AC P/N GF 470, before each flush. Connect the J 45268-1 flush filter to the discharge port of the J 45268-5 flush adapter. Connect the blue hose from the J 43600 to the J 45268-1 flush filter adapter. - If the vehicle is equipped with rear A/C, flush the auxiliary A/C system separately.
- Cut the orifice tube frame and screen, enough to access the end of the orifice tube. Pinch off the orifice tube.
- Install the pinched orifice tube. - Install the J 45268-121.
- Install the auxiliary evaporator core to the A/C lines.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Connect the auxiliary A/C lines to the auxiliary evaporator core.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Flush the auxiliary A/C system. Follow the instructions supplied with the J 43600 . See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Remove the auxiliary A/C lines from the auxiliary evaporator core.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the J 45268-121.
- Inspect the TXV for debris. Clean or replace as needed.
- Install the auxiliary TXV. Refer to «Auxiliary Air Conditioning Evaporator Thermal Expansion Valve Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Remove the J 45268-4 from the A/C compressor suction hose.
- Remove the J 45268-5 from the A/C compressor discharge hose.
- If the removed A/C compressor is being reinstalled, perform the following procedure: Drain the POE oil from the A/C compressor. Add the total system capacity of POE oil to the A/C compressor. Refer to «Refrigerant System Specifications (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-system-specifications-hp2) .
- If you will replace the A/C compressor after flushing the system, perform the following procedure: Refer to the «Refrigerant System Specifications (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-system-specifications-hp2) . DO NOT drain the new POE oil from the compressor. Deduct the amount of POE oil shipped with the service compressor from the amount of POE oil listed in the capacities table. Refer to «Refrigerant System Specifications (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-system-specifications-hp2) . Add the calculated amount to the compressor, as needed.
- Replace the A/C accumulator assembly. Refer to «Air Conditioning Accumulator Replacement (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the A/C compressor. Refer to «Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install a new orifice tube. - Leak test the fittings using J 42220 .

- Reverse flow refrigerant flushing is recommended for desiccant bag failure. Perform the following procedure and replace the accumulator when the flush procedure is complete. IMPORTANT: The filter inside the J 45268-1 is serviceable. Remove and discard the check valve from the filter. Service the filter with AC P/N GF 470, before each flush. Connect the J 45268-1 flush filter to the discharge port of the J 45268-5 flush adapter. Connect the blue hose from the J 43600 to the J 45268-1 flush filter adapter. See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) . Connect the red hose from the J 43600 to the suction port of the J 45268-4 flush adapter. - Flush the front A/C system. Follow the instructions supplied with the J 43600 . See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- If the vehicle is equipped with rear A/C, flush the auxiliary A/C system separately.
- Cut the orifice tube frame and screen, enough to access the end of the orifice tube. Pinch off the orifice tube.
- Install the pinched orifice tube. Refer to «Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement (W/O C69)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) or «Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement (W/C69)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) or «Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement (W/O C69-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Remove the auxiliary thermal expansion valve (TXV). Refer to «Auxiliary Air Conditioning Evaporator Thermal Expansion Valve Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the J 45268-121.
- Install the auxiliary evaporator core to the A/C lines.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Connect the auxiliary A/C lines to the auxiliary evaporator core.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Flush the auxiliary A/C system. Follow the instructions supplied with the J 43600 . See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Remove the auxiliary A/C lines from the auxiliary evaporator core.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the J 45268-121.
- Inspect the TXV for debris. Clean or replace as needed.
- Install the auxiliary TXV. Refer to «Auxiliary Air Conditioning Evaporator Thermal Expansion Valve Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Remove the J 45268-4 from the A/C compressor suction hose.
- Remove the J 45268-5 from the A/C compressor discharge hose.
- If the removed A/C compressor is being reinstalled, perform the following procedure: Drain the PAG oil from the A/C compressor. Rotate the compressor input shaft to assist in draining the PAG oil from the A/C compressor. Add the total system capacity of PAG oil to the A/C compressor. Refer to «Refrigerant System Specifications (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-system-specifications-non-hp2) .
- If you will replace the A/C compressor after flushing the system, perform the following procedure: Determine if the new service compressor is shipped with PAG oil. Refer to the «Refrigerant System Specifications (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-system-specifications-non-hp2) . If the service compressor is shipped with PAG oil, DO NOT drain the new PAG oil from the compressor. Deduct the amount of PAG oil shipped with the service compressor from the amount of PAG oil listed in the capacities table. Refer to «Refrigerant System Specifications (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-system-specifications-non-hp2) . Add the calculated amount to the compressor, as needed.
- Add one bottle of J 41447 directly to the A/C compressor. See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the A/C compressor. Refer to «Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LY2, LY5, LH6, L76, L92 and LMG)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install a new orifice tube. Refer to «Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement (W/O C69)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) or «Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement (W/C69)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) or «Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement (W/O C69-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .
- Leak test the fittings using J 42220 .
Draining Procedure
- Before draining oil, position the compressor verdically (clutch facing upwards) and let it sit for 1 minute.
- Position the compressor horizontally, with the ports facing downward, rotate the clutch and shake the compressor in order to remove as much oil from the compressor as possible.
- Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed compressor into a clean, graduated container. Rotate the compressor shaft to assist in draining the compressor.
- Measure and record the amount of oil drained from the removed compressor. This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement compressor. Inspect oil drained from removed compressor. Refer to «Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Diagnosis»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__air-conditioning-compressor-oil-diagnosis)
- Properly discard the used refrigerant oil.
Balancing Procedure
- Before installing the compressor, the refrigerant oil will have to be fully drained.
- Add back the same quantity of polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil as drained from the removed compressor. Refer to the amount of refrigerant oil recorded during the compressor removal.

- Properly discard the used POE refrigerant oil.
Balancing Procedure with Service Compressor Replacement (Flushing Not Required)
- Before installing the compressor, calculate the total amount of oil drained from the compressor and collected by the recovery equipment.
- If the amount drained and recorded is: LESS THAN 74 ml (2.5 ounces), leave 74 ml (2.5 ounces) in the replacement compressor. Do not drain the oil from the replacement compressor. MORE THAN 74 ml (2.5 ounces), calculate the difference between the amount that was drained and recorded. ADD the calculated difference to the A/C system by filling the A/C compressor or using J 45037: injector along with GE 48997: adapter.
Balancing Procedure with Service Compressor Replacement (Flushing Required)
- Flush the A/C system. Flushing will remove all the oil from the A/C system. Refer to «Flushing (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__flushing-hp2) .
- Remove the A/C compressor from the vehicle. Refer to «Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) . The A/C system must be replenished with 150 ml (5.0 oz) of POE oil. NOTE: The refrigerant oil in the A/C system must be balanced during compressor replacement. The new service compressor is shipped with 74 ml (2.5 oz) of refrigerant oil. Do not drain the oil from the compressor.
- Before installing the compressor, deduct the amount of oil shipped with the compressor 74 ml (2.5 oz) from the total amount of the system oil 150 ml (5.0 oz).
- Add the calculated amount 76 ml (2.5 oz) of oil to the compressor and install it in the vehicle.
Balancing Procedure (Flushing Required Only)
- Flush the A/C system. Flushing will remove all the oil from the A/C system. Refer to «Flushing (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__flushing-hp2) .

Special Tools
Removal Procedure
- Recover the refrigerant. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .
- Install a ratchet into the air conditioning (A/C) belt tensioner adapter opening.
- Remove the air cleaner resonator outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-53l-60l-62l-repair-instructions) .
- Rotate the A/C belt tensioner clockwise in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
- Remove the A/C belt from the A/C compressor.
- Slowly release the tension on the A/C belt tensioner.
- Remove the discharge hose bolt from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the discharge hose from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the suction hose bolt from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the suction hose from the A/C compressor.
- Discard the sealing washers. Cap all of the openings.
- Disconnect the electrical connections.
- Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts. The lower right bolt (3) will stay with the compressor due to a lack of clearance.
- Remove the A/C compressor (2) from the bracket (1).
- If replacing the A/C compressor. Refer to «Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
Installation Procedure
- Install the A/C compressor (2) to the bracket (1) through the fender well. Insert the mounting bolt (3) into the lower right mounting boss before installing the A/C compressor.
- Install the A/C compressor to the bracket. Insert the mounting bolt into the lower right mount before installing the A/C compressor.
- Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
- Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
- Install the A/C discharge hose to the compressor using new sealing washers. Refer to «Air Conditioning System Seal Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the A/C discharge hose bolt to the A/C compressor and tighten to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).
- Install the A/C suction hose to the compressor using new sealing washers. Refer to «Air Conditioning System Seal Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the A/C suction hose bolt to the A/C compressor and tighten to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).
- Install the A/C drive belt. Refer to «Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement (V8)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-53l-60l-62l-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .

- Inspect the seal washer for signs of damage to help determine the root cause of the failure.
- Inspect the A/C refrigerant components for damage or burrs. Repair if necessary.
- Discard the sealing washer.
- Inspect the new seal washer for any signs of cracks, cuts, or damage. Do not use a damaged seal washer.
- Remove the cap or tape from the A/C refrigerant components.
- Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, clean the sealing surfaces of the A/C refrigerant components.
- Carefully install the new seal washer onto the A/C refrigerant component. The washer must completely bottom against the surface of the fitting.
- Assemble the remaining A/C refrigerant components. Refer to the appropriate repair procedure.
- Disassemble the A/C refrigerant components. Refer to the appropriate repair procedure For compression style fittings use a back up wrench on the fitting (2) and loosen the fitting nut (1). For banjo style fittings remove the bolt retaining the banjo type fitting.
- Remove the O-ring seal from the A/C refrigerant component.
- Inspect the O-ring seal for signs of damage to help determine the root cause of the failure.
- Inspect the A/C refrigerant components for damage or burrs. Repair if necessary.
- Cap or tape the A/C refrigerant components.
- Discard the O-ring seal.
- Inspect the new O-ring seal for any sign or cracks, cuts, or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Remove the cap or tape from the A/C refrigerant components.
- Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, carefully clean the sealing surfaces of the A/C refrigerant components.
- Lightly coat the new O-ring seal with mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil.
- Carefully slide the new O-ring seal onto the A/C refrigerant component.
- The O-ring seal must be fully seated.
- Assemble the A/C components. Refer to the appropriate repair procedure. For compression style fittings use a back up wrench on the fitting (2) and tighten the fitting nut (1) to specification. For banjo style fittings install the bolt retaining the banjo type fitting and tighten to specification.

- Remove the discharge hose mounting bolt (2) from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the discharge hose (1) from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the upper radiator baffle. Refer to «Radiator Air Upper Baffle and Deflector Replacement (Yukon)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) or «Radiator Air Upper Baffle and Deflector Replacement (Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) .
- Remove the discharge hose nut from the condenser.
- Remove the discharge hose from the condenser.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C recirculation switch.
- Remove the discharge hose from the vehicle.
- Discard all of the used sealing washers. Cap the system openings.
- Install the discharge hose (1) to the vehicle.
- Install the discharge hose to the condenser using new sealing washers. Refer to «Air Conditioning System Seal Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the discharge hose nut to the condenser and tighten to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).
- Install the upper air baffle. Refer to «Radiator Air Upper Baffle and Deflector Replacement (Yukon)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) or «Radiator Air Upper Baffle and Deflector Replacement (Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) .
- Connect the electrical connector to the A/C recirculation switch.
- Install the discharge hose (1) to the A/C compressor using new sealing washers. Refer to «Air Conditioning System Seal Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the discharge hose mounting bolt and tighten to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).
- Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .

- Disconnect the electrical harnesses and the ground connections from the HVAC module.
- Locate the rear engine cover (1) on rear of intake manifold.
- Reposition the acoustic foam (if applicable) down from the access location (1).
- Remove the nuts (2) from the HVAC module (3).
- Remove the bolts (1) from the HVAC module (3).
- Remove the HVAC module (3).
- If replacing the HVAC module, transfer the components from the old HVAC module as necessary.
- Install the HVAC module (3).
- Install the nuts (2) to the HVAC module (3) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
- Install the bolts (1) to the HVAC module (3) and tighten to 4 N.m (35 lb in).
- Reposition acoustic foam (if applicable) to original position or cover access hole with equivalent foam tape (1).
- Connect the electrical harness and the ground connections.
- Install the HVAC module drain hose.
- Install the instrument panel. - Remove the HVAC module (3).
- If replacing the HVAC module, transfer the components from the old HVAC module as necessary.
- Install the HVAC module (3).
- Install the nuts (2) to the HVAC module (3) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
- Install the bolts (1) to the HVAC module (3) and tighten to 4 N.m (35 lb in).
- Reposition acoustic foam (if applicable) to original position or cover access hole with equivalent foam tape (1).
- Connect the electrical harness and the ground connections.
- Install the HVAC module drain hose.
- Install the instrument panel. Refer to «Instrument Panel Service Positioning (With SLT)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) or «Instrument Panel Service Positioning (Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .
- Install the upper intake manifold sight shield. Refer to «Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-53l-60l-62l-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Install the drive motor generator control module assembly. Refer to «Drive Motor Generator Control Module Assembly Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/engine-control-systems/#hybrid-engine-controls-repair-instructions) .
- Install the battery. Refer to «Battery Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
- Install the accumulator. Refer to «Air Conditioning Accumulator Replacement (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the surge tank outlet hose to the heater core. Firmly push the quick connect onto the heater core pipe until you hear an audible click.
- Install the inlet heater hose to the heater core. Firmly push the quick connect onto the heater core pipe until you hear an audible click.
- Fill the engine coolant. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Remove the HVAC module. Refer to «Air Conditioning and Heater Module Assembly Removal and Installation (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- If equipped remove the heat stakes (1) from the HVAC module (2) with a screw driver and a hammer.
- Disconnect all wiring connections from blower motor, blower motor control module and sensors. Also, remove all wiring from retainers before removal.
- If equipped remove the screws from the HVAC module assembly.
- Remove the evaporator cowl gasket from the evaporator.
- Separate the upper HVAC module assembly (2) from the lower HVAC module assembly (1)
- Remove the evaporator core (1) from the upper HVAC module assembly (2).
- Remove the air conditioning evaporator air temperature sensor. Refer to «Air Conditioning Refrigerant Temperature Sensor Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-automatic)
- Install the evaporator core (1) to the HVAC module assembly (2).
- Install the upper HVAC module assembly (2) from the lower HVAC module assembly (1)
- Install the evaporator cowl gasket to the evaporator.
- Install the screws to the HVAC module assembly. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
- Install the HVAC module assembly. Refer to «Air Conditioning and Heater Module Assembly Removal and Installation (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- Install the air conditioning evaporator air temperature sensor. Refer to «Air Conditioning Refrigerant Temperature Sensor Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-automatic)
- Remove the HVAC module. Refer to «Air Conditioning and Heater Module Assembly Removal and Installation (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) .
- If equipped remove the heat stakes (1) from the HVAC module (2) with a screw driver and a hammer.
- Disconnect all wiring connections from blower motor, blower motor control module and sensors. Also, remove all wiring from retainers before removal.
- If equipped remove the screws from the HVAC module assembly.
- Remove the evaporator cowl gasket from the evaporator.

- Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Remove the air intake tube.
- Remove the heater and surge tank hoses from the mounting clip.
- Squeeze the plastic retainer release tabs.
- Pull the connection apart.
- Remove the inlet heater hose from the water pump.
- Remove the inlet heater hose.
- Install the inlet heater hose.
- Install the inlet heater hose to the water pump.
- Connect the heater hose to the heater core.
- Install the heater and surge tank hoses to the mounting clip.
- Install the air intake tube.

- Separate the HVAC module assembly.

- Install the HVAC module assembly halves.
- Install the screws to the HVAC module assembly. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 1.6 N.m (14 lb in).
- Install the mode actuator to the HVAC module assembly.
- Install the screws to the mode actuator. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 1.6 N.m (14 lb in).
- Connect the electrical connector to the mode actuator.
- Install the HVAC module. - Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Before removing the quick connect fitting from the vehicle, clean area and remove any loose dirt or debris.
- Remove the fitting from the tube by squeezing the retainer clip legs together and pulling the fitting from the tube.
- Remove the retainer from the tube by folding the legs back on themselves and sliding the retainer clip out of the tube (1).
- Place a flat-blade tool through the window of the quick connect fitting to just below the outer bushing and above the top O-ring (2).
- Remove the outer bushing with a gentle prying motion. Discard the outer bushing.
- Remove other components and discard.
- Thoroughly clean and inspect the inside surface of the fitting for nicks, scratches or cracks. Remove any dirt or debris using water and a lint free cloth.
- Lubricate O-rings with coolant.
- Install the first O-ring and gently push down into the O-ring pocket (4).
- Install the midspacer and gently push down to first O-ring (3).
- Install the second O-ring and gently push down to the top of midspacer (2).
- Install the retainer clip by lining up the retainer legs with windows on the fitting housing (1). Push the retainer clip down until the retainer clip legs are engaged into the windows.
- Clean and inspect the pipe end for any nicks, scratches or cracks.
- Install the fitting to the vehicle by pushing the fitting onto the tube until an audible click is heard. Pull back to verify the connection is secure.
- Fill the cooling system. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Squeeze the plastic retainer tabs on the inlet hose.
- Pull the connection apart.
- Squeeze the plastic retainer tabs on the outlet hose.
- Pull the connection apart.
- Remove the auxiliary heater pipes (1, 2) from the heater inlet and outlet tees (3, 4) at the HVAC module.
- Remove the vehicle right assist step. Remove both of the right tires. - Remove the right rear wheelhouse panel. - Remove the right front wheelhouse panel. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) .
- Remove the auxiliary heater pipes (2, 3) from the auxiliary heater core.
- Remove the heater/A/C tubes retaining nut (4) from the stud (1) at the frame (6).
- Remove the auxiliary heater pipes (2) from the clamps (5).
- Remove the auxiliary heater pipes from the vehicle.
- Install the auxiliary heater pipes to the vehicle.
- Install the auxiliary heater pipes (2) to the clamps (5).
- Install the heater/A/C tubes retaining nut (4) to the stud (1) at the frame (6) and tighten to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
- Install the auxiliary heater pipes (2, 3) to the auxiliary heater core.
- Install the right front wheelhouse panel. Refer to «Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Right Side»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) .
- Install the right rear wheelhouse panel. Refer to «Rear Wheelhouse Panel Liner Replacement (RPO HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) or «Rear Wheelhouse Panel Liner Replacement (RPO X88 Chevrolet, RPO O88 GMC)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) .
- Install the vehicle right assist step. - Install the auxiliary heater pipes (1, 2) to the heater inlet and outlet tees (3, 4).
- Connect the outlet heater hose to the heater core.
- Connect the inlet heater hose to the heater core.
- Fill the cooling system. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .

- Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. - Drain the engine coolant. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Disconnect the heater lines (2, 3) from the auxiliary HVAC module at the underside of the vehicle.
- Disconnect the air conditioning lines (4, 5) from the auxiliary HVAC module at the underside of the vehicle.
- Remove the nuts (6) from the studs (1) that secure the auxiliary HVAC module to the underside of the vehicle.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the right rear quarter trim panel. Refer to «Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side (Standard Wheelbase)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) or «Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side (Extended Wheelbase)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) .
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the Auxiliary HVAC module.
- Remove the fastener (5) for the upper auxiliary air duct (1). Carefully slide the duct up, into the headliner, until the bottom edge of the duct is above the air distributor duct.
- Remove the fasteners (3) retaining the auxiliary HVAC module to the vehicle.
- Remove the auxiliary HVAC module (4) from the vehicle.
- Install the auxiliary HVAC module assembly (4) to the vehicle.
- Install the 2 bolts (3) inside the vehicle in order to retain the auxiliary HVAC module to the vehicle.
- Install the upper auxiliary air duct (1) to the air distributor duct. Install the fastener (5).
- Connect the electrical connectors to the auxiliary HVAC module.
- Install the right rear quarter trim panel. Refer to «Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side (Standard Wheelbase)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) or «Rear Quarter Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side (Extended Wheelbase)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) .
- Raise the vehicle.
- Install the nuts (6) that secure the auxiliary HVAC module to the vehicle and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
- Install the air conditioning lines (4, 5) and the nut (4) to the auxiliary HVAC module and tighten to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).
- Install the heater lines (2, 3) to the auxiliary HVAC module at the underside of vehicle.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill the engine coolant. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Recharge the refrigerant to the system. - Remove the fasteners (1) retaining the auxiliary HVAC module to the vehicle.
- Remove the auxiliary HVAC module (2) from the vehicle.
- Install the auxiliary HVAC module assembly (2) to the vehicle.
- Install the 2 bolts (1) inside the vehicle in order to retain the auxiliary HVAC module to the vehicle.
- Install the forward auxiliary air duct.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the auxiliary HVAC module.
- Install the right rear quarter trim panel. Tools Required
The rear A/C or heater lines can be repaired in sections.
Replacement lines through GMSPO contains all 4 lines in two sections.
Use the J 41425 when any of the following actions damage the rear A/C or heater lines: See Special Tools .

Minimum Tube Length Required Table
| IMPORTANT | When you section the rear A/C or heater lines, ensure that the correct minimum length remains in the straight part of the line on both sides of the splice. |
Follow the Straight Line Repair procedure in order to repair line damage in a straight section of line.
Follow the Line Sectioning Repair procedure in order to repair any damage in a bend area. Do not repair the rear A/C or heater lines in a bend area, replace the lines. Maintaining the original line shape will prevent vibrations and rub-through.

Straight Line Repair
- Recover the refrigerant, if repairing the A/C lines. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-hp2) or «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .
- Drain the coolant, if repairing the heater lines. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Locate the area that requires repair.
- Obtain a length of replacement line to make the repair.
- Use a tubing cutter in order to cut and remove the section of damaged line.
- Use a tubing cutter in order to cut the replacement line to length.
- Use the cleaning pad from the J 41425 in order to clean any burrs or grease from the line ends. See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) . Be sure to clean at least 19 mm (0.75 in) from the line ends.
- Use the LOK prep sealant in order to prep the line ends.
- Apply one drop of the J 41425-3 sealing compound to the outside of each end of the line.
- Insert the line ends into the LOK fitting.
- Rotate the LOK fitting one complete turn in order to evenly distribute the sealing compound around the lines.
- Install the correct LOK fitting jaws into the J 41425-1 tool.
- Install the J 41425-1 tool over the LOK connectors. Verify that the LOK connector ends are positioned in the counter bores of the jaws.
- Tighten the forcing screw of the J 41425-1 tool. When fully seated, the LOK connector collars will bottom out on the center shoulder of the LOK fitting.
- Loosen the forcing screw and remove the J 41425-1 tool from the repaired line.
- Repeat Step 8 through Step 16 to repair the other end of the line.
- Verify that the LOK fittings are correctly installed.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Refill the coolant, if drained. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant, if repairing the A/C lines. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-hp2) or «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .
Line Sectioning Repair
- Recover the refrigerant, if repairing the A/C lines. - Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Obtain a new A/C or heater line for sectioning.
- Scribe a mark on the line that will be sectioned.
- Use a tubing cutter in order to cut the line or lines being replaced.
- Remove the section of line being replaced from the vehicle.
- Install the replacement line to the vehicle.
- Use a tubing cutter in order to cut the replacement line to length.
- Use the cleaning pad from the J 41425 in order to clean any burrs or grease. See «Special Tools»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) . Be sure to clean at least 19 mm (0.75 in) from the A/C line.

- Install the J 41425-1 tool over the LOK connectors. Verify that the LOK connector ends are positioned in the counter bores of the jaws.
- Hold the tool body with a 3/8" breaker bar. Turn the forcing screw until both of the connector collars bottom on the center shoulder of the LOK fitting.
- Loosen the forcing screw. Remove the tool from the repaired line.
- Verify that the LOK fitting is correctly installed.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Refill the coolant, if drained. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-static) .
- Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant, if repairing the A/C lines. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-hp2) or «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Non-HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging-non-hp2) .
Engine Coolant
Engine coolant is the essential element of the heating system. The thermostat controls the normal engine operating coolant temperature. The thermostat also creates a restriction for the cooling system that promotes a positive coolant flow and helps prevent cavitation.
Coolant enters the heater core through the inlet heater hose, in a pressurized state. The heater core is located inside the HVAC module. The ambient air drawn through the HVAC module absorbs the heat of the coolant flowing through the heater core. Heated air is distributed to the passenger compartment, through the HVAC module, for passenger comfort. Opening or closing the air temperature door controls the amount of heat delivered to the passenger compartment. The coolant exits the heater core through the return heater hose and recirculated back through the engine cooling system.
A/C Cycle
Refrigerant is the key element in an air conditioning system. R-134a is presently the only EPA approved refrigerant for automotive use. R-134a is a very low temperature gas that can transfer the undesirable heat and moisture from the passenger compartment to the outside air.
The electric A/C compressor is a self contained high voltage inverter, electric motor, and direct coupled compressor. The electric A/C compressor requires the high voltage system on the vehicle to be engaged and operates on command from the climate control panel. The electric A/C compressor has the ability to run and provide cooling performance while the vehicle engine is not running. This feature enables the electric A/C compressor to run at a speed independent of the engine. The control system will command the electric A/C compressor to a speed necessary to maintain a desired cooling level rather than cycle the electric A/C compressor on and off. Limits of operation for the electric A/C compressor are controlled by software within the climate control panel. The electric A/C compressor builds pressure on the vapor refrigerant. Compressing the refrigerant also adds heat to the refrigerant. The refrigerant is discharged from the compressor, through the discharge hose, and forced to flow to the condenser and then through the balance of the A/C system. The A/C system is mechanically protected with the use of a high pressure relief valve. If the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor were to fail or if the refrigerant system becomes restricted and refrigerant pressure continued to rise, the high pressure relief will pop open and release refrigerant from the system.
Compressed refrigerant enters the condenser in a high temperature, high pressure vapor state. As the refrigerant flows through the condenser, the heat of the refrigerant is transferred to the ambient air passing through the condenser. Cooling the refrigerant causes the refrigerant to condense and change from a vapor to a liquid state.
The condenser is located in front of the radiator for maximum heat transfer. The condenser is made of aluminum tubing and aluminum cooling fins, which allows rapid heat transfer for the refrigerant. The semi-cooled liquid refrigerant exits the condenser and flows through the liquid line, to the orifice tube.
The orifice tube is located in the liquid line between the condenser and the evaporator. The orifice tube is the dividing point for the high and the low pressure sides of the A/C system. As the refrigerant passes through the orifice tube, the pressure on the refrigerant is lowered. Due to the pressure differential on the liquid refrigerant, the refrigerant will begin to vaporize at the orifice tube. The orifice tube also meters the amount of liquid refrigerant that can flow into the evaporator.
Refrigerant exiting the orifice tube flows into the evaporator core in a low pressure, liquid state. Ambient air is drawn through the HVAC module and passes through the evaporator core. Warm and moist air will cause the liquid refrigerant to boil inside the evaporator core. The boiling refrigerant absorbs heat from the ambient air and draws moisture onto the evaporator. The refrigerant exits the evaporator through the suction line and back to the compressor, in a vapor state, and completing the A/C cycle of heat removal. At the compressor, the refrigerant is compressed again and the cycle of heat removal is repeated.
The conditioned air is distributed through the HVAC module for passenger comfort. The heat and moisture removed from the passenger compartment will also change form, or condense, and is discharged from the HVAC module as water.
A/C Cycle with Auxiliary
The auxiliary A/C system operates from the vehicles primary A/C system. The front or primary A/C system must be ON to allow the rear A/C system to function.

After the high and low side of the A/C system pressure equalize, the high pressure switch will CLOSE. Closing the high pressure switch will complete the electrical circuit to the compressor clutch. The A/C system is also mechanically protected with the use of a high pressure relief valve. The TXV is the dividing point for the high and the low pressure sides of the rear A/C system. As the refrigerant passes through the TXV, the pressure on the refrigerant is lowered. Due to the pressure differential on the liquid refrigerant, the refrigerant will begin to boil at the expansion device. The TXV also meters the amount of liquid refrigerant that can flow into the evaporator.
Refrigerant exiting the TXV flows into the evaporator core in a low pressure, liquid state. Ambient air is drawn through the rear A/C module and passes through the evaporator core. Warm and moist air will cause the liquid refrigerant boil inside of the evaporator core. The boiling refrigerant absorbs heat from the ambient air and draws moisture onto the evaporator. The refrigerant exits the evaporator through the suction line and back to the primary A/C systems suction line. Refrigerant in the primary A/C system suction line flows back to the compressor, in a vapor state, and completes the A/C cycle of heat removal. At the compressor, the refrigerant is compressed again and the cycle of heat removal is repeated.
The conditioned air is distributed through the rear A/C module for passenger comfort. The heat and moisture removed from the rear passenger compartment will also change form, or condense, and is discharged from the rear A/C module as water.
