  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to «ZONE 3»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) in SIR.
  2. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to KNEE BOLSTER REPLACEMENT in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console. NOTE: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
  3. Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower trim cover using J 42640 .
  4. Remove the body control module bracket. Do not disconnect the harness from the body control module. Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT in Body Control System.
  5. Disconnect the transmission shift cable (1) from the column.
  6. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors. NOTE: During removal of the steering column the wire harness retaining clip must be removed and reinstalled after installing the steering column or damage may occur to the wire harness.
  7. Remove the wiring harness retaining pin (4) from the instrument panel.
  8. Remove the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (1) from the steering column, and remove the shaft from the steering column.
  9. Remove the nuts (1) from the knee bolster deflector.
  10. Remove the nuts from the upper support brackets.
  11. Remove the nuts from the lower support brackets. NOTE: Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column assembly on the end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the columns collapsible design. Do NOT hammer on the end of the shaft, because hammering could loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. If you need to remove the steering wheel, refer to the Steering Wheel Replacement procedure in this section.
  12. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
CAUTIONIn order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following: Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column. Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to «ZONE 3»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) in SIR. Important: A new sensor must come with a pin installed. If pin is not installed, return and reorder sensor.
  2. The steering wheel must be in the straight position.
  3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to «STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#steering-wheel-steering-column) .
  4. Set the steering wheel in the LOCKED position.
  5. If necessary to lock the column, install the anti rotation pin into the steering column.
  6. Remove the nut and the bolt from the upper intermediate shaft connection and slide the intermediate steering shaft down. Important: Do not apply force to the sensor and the bearing assembly in a sideways direction.
  7. Remove the sensor connector by using a suitable tool in order to pull the connector down around the right side of the steering column for accessibility.
  8. Remove the sensor retainer from the steering shaft. Important: When reusing the sensor (1) you must install a pin into the sensor before it is removed from the steering shaft. By not installing a pin into the sensor it will cause the sensor to lose its centering position and must be discarded. Pin diameter must be in the range of 1.0-2.0 mm. Do not remove the bearing adapter (3).
  9. If reusing the sensor (1), remove the position sensor by pulling the sensor straight out from the bearing adapter (3) until the sensor is almost off the steering shaft (2). Install a pin into the sensor before removing from the steering shaft (2). Do not remove the pin until the sensor is re-installed.
  10. If replacing the sensor (1), remove the sensor by pulling the sensor straight out from the bearing adapter (3) and off the steering shaft.

Important: Do not apply force to the sensor (1) or the bearing adapter (3) in a sideways direction.

  1. If reusing the sensor, with the pin still installed, align the sensor onto the steering shaft (2) and into the bearing adapter (3). Important: If installing a new sensor the sensor will come presented. Do not remove the pin until installation is complete.
  2. Install the sensor onto the steering shaft (2) and into the bearing adapter (3).
  3. The sensor must be set to approximately 3.00 mm gap between the sensor and the bearing adapter.
  4. Install the sensor connector.
  5. Remove the pin from the sensor. Install the sensor retainer onto the steering shaft. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Steering Wheel and Column Description and Operation

The steering wheel and column has 4 primary functions

  1. Vehicle steering
  2. Vehicle security
  3. Driver convenience
  4. Driver safety

Vehicle Steering

The steering wheel is the first link between the driver and the vehicle. The steering wheel is fastened to a steering shaft within the column. At the lower end of the column, the intermediate shaft connects the column to the steering gear.

Vehicle Security on Some Vehicle Models

Theft deterrent components are mounted and designed into the steering column. The following components allow the column to be locked in order to minimize theft

  1. The ignition switch
  2. The manual transmission steering column lock
  3. The ignition cylinder

Driver Convenience

The steering wheel and column may also have driver controls attached for convenience and comfort. The following controls may be mounted on or near the steering wheel or column.

  1. The turn signal switch
  2. The hazard switch
  3. The headlamp dimmer switch
  4. The wiper/washer switch
  5. The horn pad/cruise control switch
  6. The redundant radio/entertainment system controls
  7. The tilt or tilt/telescoping functions
  8. The navigation/OnStar® features
  9. The HVAC controls

Driver Safety

The energy-absorbing steering column compresses in the event of a front-end collision, which reduces the chance of injury to the driver. The mounting capsules break away from the mounting bracket in the event of an accident.
