Eliminating Unwanted Odors in Vehicles

GM Vehicle Care Odor Eliminator, GM P/N 12378554, US ACDelco 88900909, Canadian P/N 88901678, may control or eliminate odors in the interior and luggage compartment areas of GM vehicles. This non-toxic, biodegradable, odorless product has been shown to greatly reduce or remove the following types of odor

  1. Objectionable smells of mold and mildew resulting from vehicle water leaks
  2. Customer created odors, such as smoke

You may safely use GM Vehicle Care Odor Eliminator on fabrics, vinyl, leather, carpet, and sound deadening materials. You may also induce this product into HVAC modules and instrument panel ducts for the control of non-bacterial related odors.

Important: This product leaves no residual scent and should not be used as an air freshener.

This product may result in the permanent elimination of an odor and may be preferable to customers whose all majors make them sensitive to perfumes.

This product may effectively remove odors when directly contacting the odor source. In cases such as water leaks, use this product with diagnostic procedures to first eliminate the primary cause of the odor. Then use further applications on the residual odor to permanently correct the vehicle condition.

How to Use this Product

  1. Spray GM Vehicle Care Odor Eliminator directly or as an additive with carpet shampoo in steam cleaners.
  2. Do not use on any interior surface that plain water would deteriorate, because this product will have the same effect. Also avoid letting this product come into contact with vinegar or any acidic substance. Acid-based products will hamper the effectiveness of GM Vehicle Care Odor Eliminator.
  3. Instructions and cautions are printed on the bottle, but additional help is available. If you encounter a persistent or recurring odor, you may call to obtain additional information and usage suggestions. In the USA, call 1-800-955-8591. In Canada, call 1-800-977-4145.

  1. Remove the sill plate. Firmly pull the sill plate up and out from the retainers.
  2. Remove the sill plate from the vehicle. Start from the front of the door sill. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to pry the door sill plate.

  1. Install the sill plate.
  2. Push the sill plate down until the sill plate locks into place.

  2. Remove the sill plate from the vehicle.

  1. Install the sill plate.
  2. Push the sill plate down until the sill plate locks into place.

Removal Procedure

Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the door sill trim plate from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Install the door sill trim plate to the vehicle. Align the retainers along the door sill and press into place.

Floor Carpet Drying

If the carpet or the pad or insulator is wet, use the following criteria for drying or for replacing the components

  1. For a 1-piece carpet assembly bonded to a cotton or a fiber padding, replace the entire assembly.
  2. For a 2-piece carpet assembly with a cotton or a fiber padding, replace the padding only. While the carpet is out of the vehicle, dry the carpet using the method described below.
  3. For a 1-piece carpet assembly bonded to a foam padding or attached to a synthetic padding, dry the carpet using the method described below.
  4. For a 2-piece carpet assembly with a synthetic padding, dry the assembly using the method described below.

Drying Method

  1. If you observe puddles of liquid on the carpet face, use a wet vacuum to remove the excess moisture.
  2. Blot the face of the carpet with a towel in order to absorb as much moisture as possible.
  3. Point a fan at the affected area and air dry the carpet.

  1. Remove the front seats. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - FRONT BUCKET in Seats.
  2. Remove the rear seats. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - REAR NO. 1 (60/40 SPLIT) or SEAT REPLACEMENT - REAR NO. 1 (BUCKET) in Seats.
  3. Remove the front center seat. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - CENTER in Seats.
  4. Remove the floor center console, if equipped. Refer to CONSOLE REPLACEMENT (WITH CONSOLE MOUNTING BRACKET) or CONSOLE REPLACEMENT (W/O CONSOLE MOUNTING BRACKET) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  5. Remove the lower bracket from the I/P to the floor to allow carpet removal.
  6. Remove the door sill trim plates. Refer to «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) and «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - REAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  7. Remove the hinge pillar trim panels from both sides. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - HINGE PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  8. Remove the garnish molding center pillar trim. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - CENTER PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  9. Lower the midgate.
  10. Remove the third pillar trim. Refer to «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (TAHOE/YUKON/ESCALADE/SUBURBAN)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (AVALANCHE/ESCALADE EXT)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  11. Remove the carpet from the vehicle.
CAUTIONIn order to avoid personal Injury or vehicle damage when you repair or replace the carpet, use the same thickness and material size as the original installation. Always return the carpet to the original location.

  1. Install the carpet to the vehicle.
  2. Install the third pillar trim.   3. Raise the midgate.
  4. Install the garnish molding center pillar trim. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - CENTER PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  5. Install the hinge pillar trim panels. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - HINGE PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  6. Install the door sill trim plates. Refer to «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) and «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - REAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  7. Install the lower bracket from the I/P to the floor.
  8. Install the floor center console, if equipped. Refer to CONSOLE REPLACEMENT (WITH CONSOLE MOUNTING BRACKET) or CONSOLE REPLACEMENT (W/O CONSOLE MOUNTING BRACKET) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  9. Install the front center seats, if equipped. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - CENTER in Seats.
  10. Install the rear seats. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - REAR NO. 1 (60/40 SPLIT) or SEAT REPLACEMENT - REAR NO. 1 (BUCKET) in Seats.
  11. Install the front seats. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - FRONT BUCKET in Seats.

  1. Install the carpet.

  4. Remove the trim panels for the rear quarter.   5. Remove the bolts that retain the cargo tie down hooks to the floor.
  6. Remove the cargo tie down hooks.
  7. Remove the rear carpet from the vehicle.

  1. Install the rear carpet to the vehicle.
  2. Install the cargo tie down hooks. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Install the bolts that retain the cargo tie down hooks to the floor. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).
  4. Install the endgate or the liftgate door sill trim plate. Refer to «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - LIFT GATE»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  5. Install the trim panels for the rear quarter. Headliner Replacement

CAUTIONDo not attempt to repair or alter the head impact energy-absorbing material glued to the headliner or to the garnish trims. If the material is damaged, replace the headliner and/or the garnish trim. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

  1. Remove the IP top trim panel. Refer to TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  2. Remove the hinge pillar trim. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - HINGE PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  3. Disconnect the headliner wire connectors from the junction block located next to the brake pedal.
  4. Remove the wire harness retainers along the windshield pillar and I/P assembly.
  5. Remove the center trim pillar moldings. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - CENTER PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  6. Remove the third pillar trim pillar moldings. Refer to «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (TAHOE/YUKON/ESCALADE/SUBURBAN)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (AVALANCHE/ESCALADE EXT)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  7. Remove the rear corner trim pillar moldings. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - REAR CORNER»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector to the rear view mirror.
  9. Remove the upper console. Refer to «CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  10. Remove the DVD player, if equipped. Refer to DVD PLAYER REPLACEMENT in Entertainment.
  11. Remove the front sunshades. Refer to «SUNSHADE REPLACEMENT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  12. Remove the sunshade holders.
  13. Remove the rear coat hook, if equipped. Refer to «COAT HOOK REPLACEMENT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  14. Remove the assist handles. Refer to «ASSIST HANDLE REPLACEMENT - REAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  15. Remove auxiliary climate control console assembly. Refer to HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT - FRONT AUXILIARY (FRONT OVERHEAD CONTROL A/C ONLY) or HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT - FRONT AUXILIARY (FRONT OVERHEAD CONTROL HEAT AND A/C) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  16. Remove the roof mounted air outlet louver by turning counter clockwise in order to remove the retainer.
  17. Remove the retainer.
  18. Remove the sunroof finishing lace, if equipped. Refer to Sunroof Finishing Lace Replacement .
  19. Remove the rear headliner retainers, if needed.
  20. Carefully separate the air duct at the right C-pillar from the headliner.
  21. Carefully separate the headliner from the roof Velcro® retainers.
  22. With the aid of an assistant carefully slide the headliner out through the rear of the vehicle.
  23. Remove the interior dome lamp assembly in order to transfer to the new headliner. Refer to DOME LAMP REPLACEMENT in Lighting Systems.

  1. Install the interior dome lamp assembly to the new headliner.
  2. With the aid of an assistant carefully slide the headliner in through the rear of the vehicle.
  3. Secure the headliner to the roof Velcro® retainers while aligning the air duct at the right of the third pillar.
  4. Install the retainer through the air outlet louver
  5. Install the air outlet louver by turning clockwise till it is seated in place.
  6. Install the auxiliary climate control assembly. Refer to HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT - FRONT AUXILIARY (FRONT OVERHEAD CONTROL A/C ONLY) or HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT - FRONT AUXILIARY (FRONT OVERHEAD CONTROL HEAT AND A/C) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  7. Install the assist handles. Refer to «ASSIST HANDLE REPLACEMENT - REAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  8. Install the interior dome lamp. Refer to DOME LAMP REPLACEMENT in Lighting Systems.
  9. Install the rear coat hook, if equipped. Refer to «COAT HOOK REPLACEMENT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  10. Install the sunshade holders to the headliner.
  11. Install the front sunshades. Refer to «SUNSHADE REPLACEMENT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  12. Install the DVD player, if equipped. Refer to DVD PLAYER REPLACEMENT in Entertainment.
  13. Connect the electrical connector to the rear view mirror, if needed.
  14. Install the upper console. Refer to «CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  15. Install the rear corner trim pillar moldings. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - REAR CORNER»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  16. Install the third pillar trim moldings. Refer to «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (TAHOE/YUKON/ESCALADE/SUBURBAN)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (AVALANCHE/ESCALADE EXT)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  17. Install the center trim pillar moldings. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - CENTER PILLAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) . Important: Ensure that all of the wire harness retainers in the IP and the windshield pillar are all pressed into place in order to prevent rattling during driving.
  18. Connect the headliner electrical connectors to the junction block located next to the brake pedal.
  19. Install the sunroof finishing lace, if equipped. Refer to Sunroof Finishing Lace Replacement .

Headliner Replacement - Rear

CAUTIONDo not attempt to repair or alter the head impact energy-absorbing material glued to the headliner or to the garnish trims. If the material is damaged, replace the headliner and/or the garnish trim. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

Important: Do not disconnect the headliner wire harness from the junction block.

Refer to «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (TAHOE/YUKON/ESCALADE/SUBURBAN)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (AVALANCHE/ESCALADE EXT)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  4. Remove the door sill plate. Refer to «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or to «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - REAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  5. Remove the quarter panel trim screws.
  6. Remove the quarter panel trim from the vehicle.

  1. Install the quarter panel trim to the vehicle. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Install the quarter panel trim screws. Tighten Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
  3. Install the door sill plate. Refer to «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT - REAR»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  4. Install the trim panel. Refer to «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (TAHOE/YUKON/ESCALADE/SUBURBAN)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «TRIM REPLACEMENT - THIRD PILLAR (AVALANCHE/ESCALADE EXT)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  5. Install the garnish molding. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - REAR CORNER»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt800-2001-2006/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
  6. Install the rear seat. Refer to SEAT REPLACEMENT - REAR NO. 2 or SEAT REPLACEMENT - REAR NO. 2 - 50-50 in Seats.
