Power Window System Cadillac Eldorado X

Windows 2 illustrations ~1446 words

DESCRIPTION

Power window system uses a permanent magnet motor to operate each window. Motor operation is controlled by a master switch assembly alone or in combination with individual window switches. Window is raised or lowered depending on polarity of current applied to window motor.

Some models use a control module to access an express mode of operation. When left front window switch is held in down position for .3 second, module activates relay to apply full battery voltage to window motor. This provides current to quickly and fully open window.

OPERATION

When ignition switch is in RUN position, power for window system is supplied to master switch assembly through fuse block circuit breaker. When any master switch is operated, power is applied through single window switch to motor, driving window motor in either direction to either raise or lower window. Each motor is protected by an internal circuit breaker which will reset after switch is released (voltage removed).

SYSTEM CHECK

  1. Before beginning system check, turn ignition on. Ensure there is battery voltage from power window circuit breaker, located in fuse block. Ensure master switch ground circuit is complete. See «POWER WINDOW SYSTEM GROUND POINT»(/cadillac/eldorado/x-1992-2002/remont/windows/#power-window-system) . POWER WINDOW SYSTEM GROUND POINT LOCATION Application Location Eldorado, Concours & DeVille Behind Left Kick Panel
  2. With all windows closed, turn ignition switch to RUN position. Briefly (less than .3 second) press left front window switch down. Window should descend a small distance, then stop.
  3. Press left front window switch down and release (more than .3 second). Window should descend completely (express mode).
  4. Press left front window switch up. Window should raise as long as switch is held up, then stop when switch is released (no express). Repeat step 3). While window is moving down in express mode, press switch upward. Window should stop express decent.
  5. Lower and raise other windows from master switch. All windows should operate quietly and smoothly through full range of travel.
  6. Lower and raise each window from window switches. All windows should operate quietly and smoothly through full range of travel. Note any symptoms and proceed to appropriate test.

TESTING

Note. Left front window switch is referred to as master switch. For circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

WINDOWS DO NOT OPERATE

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a test light, backprobe between ground and Brown wire terminal at master switch connector. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, repair open in Brown wire between power window 30-amp circuit breaker and master switch.
  2. Backprobe between Brown wire and Black wire terminals (ground) of master switch harness connector. If test light is on, check for poor connection at master switch. If connection is okay, replace master switch. If test light is off, check for poor connection at ground point. See «POWER WINDOW SYSTEM GROUND POINT»(/cadillac/eldorado/x-1992-2002/remont/windows/#power-window-system) under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If connection is okay, repair open in Black wire between master switch and ground connection.

LEFT FRONT WINDOW DOES NOT OPERATE

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a test light, backprobe between ground and Pink wire terminal (Brown wire terminal) at master switch connector. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, repair open in Pink wire between master switch and power window 30-amp circuit breaker.
  2. On all models, backprobe between Dark Blue wire and Brown wire terminals of master switch connector. While observing test light, press left window switch at master switch to UP and DOWN positions. If test light is on for both positions, go to next step. If test light is not on in both positions, check for poor connection at master switch. If connection is okay, replace master switch.
  3. Backprobe between Dark Blue wire and Brown wire terminals at left front window motor connector. While observing test light, press left front window switch to up and down positions. If test light is off, check for open in Dark Blue wire or Brown wire between master switch and left front window motor. Repair if necessary. If test light is on, check for poor connection at left front window motor. If connection is okay, replace left front window motor.

RIGHT FRONT WINDOW DOES NOT OPERATE

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a test light, backprobe between Dark Blue wire and Brown wire terminals at right front window switch connector. While observing test light, press right window switch to UP and DOWN positions. If test light is on in both switch positions, go to next step. If test light is not on in both switch positions, go to step 3).
  2. Using a test light, backprobe between right front window motor connector terminals. Press right front window switch to UP and DOWN positions. If test light is not on in both switch positions, repair open Tan or Light Blue wire between right front window switch and motor. If test light is on in both switch positions, check right front window motor harness connector for excessive resistance. If connector is okay, replace right front window motor.
  3. Using a test light, backprobe between Pink and Light Blue wires at right front window switch connector. Then backprobe between Pink and Tan wires at right front window switch connector. If test light is not on in both cases, go to next step. If test light is on in both cases, check right front window switch harness connector for excessive resistance. If connector is okay, replace right front window switch.
  4. Using a test light, backprobe between Tan and Light Blue wires at master window switch harness connector. Press right front window switch on master switch to UP and DOWN positions. If test light is on in both switch positions, repair open Tan or Light Blue wire between master window switch and right door window switch. If test light is not on in both switch positions, check master switch harness connector for excessive resistance. If okay, replace master switch.

MASTER SWITCH INOPERATIVE, INDIVIDUAL SWITCHES ARE OPERATIVE

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a test light, backprobe between ground and Pink wire terminal at master switch connector. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, repair open in Pink wire between master switch and accessory time delay relay (taped to wiring harness under drivers seat).
  2. Backprobe between Tan wire and Light Blue wire terminals at master switch connector. Press right front window switch at master switch to UP and DOWN position. If test light is on, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections. Repair as necessary. If test light is off, check for poor connection at master switch connector. Repair as necessary. If connection is okay, replace master switch.

ONE WINDOW IS INOPERATIVE FROM INDIVIDUAL SWITCH, OPERATES FROM MASTER SWITCH
