DESCRIPTION
The Dimming Sentinel system is semi-automatic, controlling the vehicle headlights in response to light from approaching vehicles. The system will switch the headlights to low beam at a set distance depending upon the setting of the driver sensitivity control. After the approaching vehicle has passed, headlights will automatically return to high beam. Automatic control may be overridden at any time, returning full manual control of low and high beam to driver.
OPERATION
This system consists of a photosensor with integrated amplifier, high beam relay, low beam relay, dimmer switch and driver sensitivity control, all of which are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). The photosensor transistorized amplifier transmits data to the BCM. The BCM controls switching through the low and high beam relays. The photosensor is mounted to the base of inside rear view mirror for unobstructed view of approaching traffic and is not adjustable.
The low and high beam relays are single pole, double throw, 12-volt DC relays providing heavy-duty contacts for headlight beam switching. The dimmer switch incorporates a "momentary contact" grounding circuit. Normal switch operation transmits a headlight mode change request to BCM. In automatic mode, holding dimmer switch toward steering wheel provides "overriding" high beam, dependent on the current position of high beam relay.
The ON/OFF sensitivity control (located above the headlight switches) is equipped with an annunciator that informs driver when system is in automatic mode. Rotation of thumb wheel adjusts photosensor amplifier sensitivity to oncoming light. With control set at "FAR" position, headlights will automatically dim at maximum distance from approaching vehicles. To delay dimming, rotate thumb wheel away from "FAR" position. When manual control of the headlight beams is desired, rotate thumb wheel to "OFF" position and use the dimmer switch.
High beam headlight mode may be activated anytime by pulling directional indicator lever toward steering wheel. The lights will stay on until lever is released. The system automatically switches headlights from high beam to low beam anytime gear selector lever is moved to the "REVERSE" position.
