DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Sun roof has 3 end point positions: fully open, fully closed and vent. When sun roof is in vent position, rear of glass panel is raised to limit of travel, above roof panel. When opening, glass panel retracts into storage space between roof and headliner. Major components of the power sun roof assembly are: sliding glass panel, sun roof switch, sunshade panel, wind deflector, drain channel, lifter arms, track, motor, module, limit switch, and wiring harness.

Sun roof control module determines sun roof motor direction based on inputs received from sun roof switch and limit switch. When ignition switch is in RUN or ACCY position or when retained accessory power (RAP) is active, voltage is applied to sun roof control module enabling operation. Sun roof motor direction is determined by polarity of voltage applied to motor.

Sun roof motor limit switch input must be closed before sun roof will vent, slide or open. Limit switch is used to inform sun roof control module that sun roof glass is parallel to roof.

Sun roof uses 3 position rocker type switch to provide control module input selections. With sun roof closed, press switch to FORWARD/OPEN VENT and released, sun roof moves to vent position. From vent position, press switch to REARWARD/CLOSE VENT position again and release, motor will move sun roof to fully closed position. From closed position, press switch to REARWARD/CLOSE VENT and release. Sun roof opens motor runs until motor stall is sensed, sun roof switch is pushed to FORWARD/OPEN VENT position, sun roof limit switch is closed or sun roof module times out (20 seconds after express mode is started).

When switch is pressed to FORWARD position, sun roof will move to closed position as long as switch is held. Sun roof opens motor runs until motor stall is sensed, sun roof switch is pushed to neutral position, sun roof limit switch is closed or sun roof module times out (20 seconds after express mode is started). Sunshade will open with sun roof automatically, must be opened manually in vent position and closed manually.

MANUAL OPERATION OF SUN ROOF

This procedure applies when power operation to close sunroof is inoperative and sunroof must be closed. Access power sun roof motor. Use large, flat-bladed screwdriver to insert and press down on slot for gear. (Scheme 15) Turn screwdriver until sunroof is closed.

COMPONENT LOCATIONS

DRAIN HOSES

Pour about a pint of water slowly into drain channel. Check for water drainage from all 4 hoses. If water flow is restricted, blow out drain hose system with compressed air. If water leaks from headliner, lower headliner and ensure drain hoses are attached to drain tubes.

TRACK & MOTOR SYNCHRONIZATION

Note. If sun roof motor and track are both removed from vehicle, motor and track must be synchronized before installation to ensure proper operation.

Inspection

Note. This procedure is a functional check to see if sun roof panel lines up and operates to proper positions to determine if synchronization will need to be performed. If vehicle has been brought into shop after sun roof has been worked on by another source, synchronization is recommended.

  1. With sliding glass in full closed position, verify that glass panel is centered in opening and lifter arms hold glass firmly in place.
  2. Open sliding glass to full or partially open position. Close sliding glass to full closed position. Verify that sliding glass and motor are in closed position, sliding glass is even with top of roof and centered in opening.
  3. Adjust motor synchronization if rear of sliding glass is noticeably lower or higher than roof line or if rear of sliding glass is loose or can be moved up and down by hand. See «SYNCHRONIZING»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#power-sunroof-system__synchronizing) .
  4. If sliding glass in not centered in opening or not level with top of roof, change to «GLASS HEIGHT & OPENING FIT»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#power-sunroof-system__glass-height-opening-fit) .

Synchronizing

  1. Remove sun roof cover. Remove motor from mounting. See «SUN ROOF ACTUATOR»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#power-sunroof-system__sun-roof-actuator) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Do not disconnect motor wiring connector. With motor removed, move sun roof switch to rear position for several seconds, and release switch. Push switch forward and hold until motor stops. Turn ignition off, do not move sun roof switch until after motor is reinstalled.
  2. Slide sunshade fully rearward. Remove 3 screws from front edge of shield ring, and slide shield ring rearward. Locate sun roof track transmission drive gear. (Scheme 16) Turn sun roof track transmission drive gear clockwise or counterclockwise as necessary to align lifter arm guide pin with fourth rib from rear of lifter arm.
  3. Ensure rear of glass panel is held tightly in position by lifter arms and cannot be moved in up or down direction by hand. If glass panel is loose, check tightness of glass panel mounting screws.
  4. Install motor and cover. Tighten screws to 27 INCH lbs. (3 N.m). Turn ignition switch to RUN position and verify proper operation by cycling through all sun roof positions.

Scheme 16

Scheme 16

GLASS HEIGHT & OPENING FIT

  1. Adjust one corner at a time. Close sun roof. Slide sun shade completely open. Remove 3 screws at front edge of shield ring and slide shield ring rearward.
  2. To adjust any corner, loosen glass panel mounting screw nearest corner being adjusted. Also loosen center mounting screw on side being adjusted. DO NOT loosen all 3 screws on side being adjusted. Move glass panel up or down by hand and tighten 2 screws. Glass panel should be flush to 1/32" (0.1 mm) below roof surface.
  3. Check glass panel height at each corner. Adjust as necessary. Slide shield ring forward and install 3 retaining screws.

GLASS PANEL FORE/AFT ADJUSTMENT

  1. In fully closed position, glass panel should contact weatherstrip around entire perimeter. Check by inserting.0015" feeler gage or business card between seal contact area and metal roof panel. Continuous contact should exist around entire seal contact area. If gap is excessive at front or rear of glass panel, adjust as necessary.
  2. To adjust, fully open sun roof. From top of vehicle, note position of track assembly on fore/aft scale. Loosen track cover rail screws on both sides of sun roof module. (Scheme 17) Slide track cover rail on both sides forward or rearward as required. Tighten screws. Ensure left and right tracks are positioned evenly. Close sun roof and inspect seal position again using feeler gage or business card. Readjust as necessary.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

  1. Check WINDOWS circuit breaker (30-amp) located in left MaxiFuse(R) block, by checking operation of power windows. If sun roof does not operate during retained accessory power, check BODY 3 fuse (50-amp) in left MaxiFuse(R) block. If fuse is open, check for short to ground in power circuit (Red wire).
  2. Check for mechanical binding. Repair as necessary.
  3. Check for proper installation of aftermarket electronic equipment that may affect integrity of other systems.
