DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Note. All models are also equipped with Electronic Level Control (ELC). For information on ELC system, see ELECTRONIC - LEVEL CONTROL - CADILLAC WITH CVRSS article.

Continuously Variable Road-Sensing Suspension (CVRSS) system performs 2 functions

  1. Controls firmness of vehicle ride (this part of the system is called CVRSS, although the term CVRSS is also applied to the entire system.
  2. Adjusts vehicle riding height (this part of the system is called Electronic Level Control, or ELC).

CVRSS control module monitors system for faults. If a fault occurs, codes are stored in memory. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Self-diagnostics also allows technician to monitor CVRSS system data, inputs and outputs.

CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE ROAD-SENSING SUSPENSION (CVRSS)

Continuously Variable Road-Sensing Suspension (CVRSS) system can change firmness of vehicle ride in 10 milliseconds. Vehicle ride firmness is determined by how easily the strut or shock absorber can be compressed (damping characteristics). In each strut and shock absorber, damper oil flows through a damper that has 2 different sized orifices, one for firm mode and the other for soft mode. A damper actuator rotates the damper between positions (modes). Damper actuator is an integral part of strut and is not serviceable separately from strut. Damper actuators respond to command signals from CVRSS control module. CVRSS control module command signals are based on the following inputs.

CVRSS Position Sensors

These sensors (one mounted between body and each control arm) sense position of wheel in relation to body. CVRSS control module utilizes these inputs to control position of CVRSS damper actuators. If body or wheel motions are detected, CVRSS control module will command damper actuators to a soft or firm position.

CVRSS Damper Actuators

CVRSS shock absorbers/struts provide dampening by forcing fluid through internal orifices to resist suspension movement. Two levels of operation are achieved by redirecting oil flow using an actuator. Soft mode is accomplished by switching actuator on causing oil to bypass main damper. Firm mode is accomplished by switching actuator off causing oil to flow through main damper.

Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) transmits vehicle speed signal to CVRSS control module. A second signal is transmitted via the class 2 serial data line. CVRSS control module utilizes these signals to determine amount of damper control and steering assist.

RTD BODY Relay

RTD BODY relay switches battery voltage to damper actuators. High-side of relay coil is connected to battery voltage through a fuse. Low-side of relay coil is connected to CVRSS control module through enable circuit.

Steering Wheel Position Sensor

Steering wheel position sensor sends steering wheel position data (angular) to CVRSS control module. Data is used to estimate vehicle lateral acceleration.

Lift/Dive Signal

Lift and dive occur when the vehicle accelerates and decelerates. When CVRSS control module receives an active lift/dive signal from PCM, all 4 damper actuators are commanded to a firm position. PCM calculates lift signal based on inputs from throttle position, transmission gear, vehicle speed and brake switch status. Dive signal is based on rate of change of vehicle speed.

ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL (ELC)

Note. Only electrical testing and diagnosis of ELC system is covered in this article. For trouble shooting, component removal and installation, and system testing, see appropriate ELECTRONIC - LEVEL CONTROL article.

ELC system automatically raises and lowers vehicle to compensates for changes in riding height (trim height) that occur because of varying vehicle loads. To raise and lower vehicle, ELC system controls air pressure in adjustable rear shock absorbers. When riding height changes, a delay of about 7-27 seconds occurs before ELC system begins to operate.

Air pressure is supplied by a compressor that is powered by an electric motor. An exhaust solenoid on compressor vents system pressure when vehicle needs to be lowered. CVRSS control module controls the compressor and the exhaust solenoid based on inputs from position sensors. Position sensors sense position of wheel in relation to body.

Using Self-Diagnostics

Note. Checking system in self-diagnostics mode for more than 30 minutes with engine not running will discharge battery, possibly resulting in false diagnostic information being related or causing a no-start condition. If necessary, connect battery charger (turn ignition off before connecting).

Note. To exit diagnostics at any time, press RESET button on A/C-heater control panel, or turn ignition off.

Entering Diagnostics

Turn ignition on. Simultaneously push OFF and WARMER buttons on A/C-heater control panel.

Segment Check

A segment check of all LEDs on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) should begin. During this check, all segments except the turn signal indicators should illuminate. If all segments do not illuminate, repair or replace IPC. After segment check, diagnostic code display will automatically begin. (Scheme 14)

Diagnostic Code Display

  1. System will begin displaying codes (if any are stored). See «CODE DESCRIPTION»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/electronic-suspension/#suspension-electronic-cv-road-sensing) table. The first character of code is a letter that indicates which system code applies to.
  2. The fifth character of code is the letter "C" or "H". "C" stands for current code. Current means the fault currently exists (like a hard code), and fault was present the last time the diagnostic test was run. "H" stands for history code. History means fault does not currently exist, but existed before (like an intermittent code), and was not present the last time the diagnostic test was run.
  3. If no codes are present for road-sensing suspension system, a NO RSS CODES message will be displayed. If the communication line for road-sensing suspension system is not operating, a NO RSS DATA message will be displayed, indicating that the IPC could not communicate with system.

NOTES ON INTERMITTENTS

Because CVRSS control module performs a test for different failures under different driving conditions, it is often necessary to test drive vehicle to cause the failure to occur again and allow a code to set. If failure does not occur again during test drive, a good description of vehicle behavior may be helpful in determining which component or circuit is faulty.

Most intermittent problems are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. Check for the following conditions

  1. Poor mating of connector halves.
  2. Terminals not fully seated in connector body.
  3. Improperly formed or damaged terminals (carefully reform all connector terminals in a problem circuit to increase contact tension).
  4. Poor terminal-to-wire connection (requires removing terminal from connector body to inspect).

Most of the time, if CVRSS system detects a fault but the fault clears before the ignition is turned off, CVRSS function will not be disabled. Some failures will disable CVRSS function for the entire ignition cycle, even if the fault clears before the ignition is turned off.

When a fault occurs, SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message should come on and remain on until the ignition is turned off and then on again. The following conditions may cause SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message to be displayed intermittently

  1. An interruption of power to CVRSS control module (check wiring and fuses).
  2. Incorrect voltage of power supply circuits (battery or ignition) to CVRSS control module. Voltage must be more than 10 volts or less than 16.0 volts. This condition prevents CVRSS control module from logging codes and displaying SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message. If this condition occurs while driving, system will not operate normally. When normal voltage is restored, system will operate normally (check charging system).

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Note. For terminal and circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS. Use illustrations for identification of CVRSS control module connector terminals. (Scheme 12)and (Scheme 13). After completing each repair, recheck system operation to verify problem has been fixed. See CVRSS SYSTEM CHECK under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
