MODEL IDENTIFICATION
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Transaxle/Transmission shift interlock system prevents driver from moving gearshift lever from "P" position unless ignition switch is turned to ON position. On models equipped with Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid, gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position without simultaneously applying brake pedal with ignition switch turned to ON position. Shift interlock solenoid is located at gearshift lever in steering column or center console.
PARK LOCK CABLE
Gearshift lever is locked in "P" position when ignition switch is in LOCK position. When ignition switch is turned to ON position, gearshift lever is allowed movement to desired position. Ignition key cannot be removed until gearshift lever is returned to "P" position.
SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID
Gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position without simultaneously applying brake pedal with ignition switch turned to ON position. When brake pedal is applied, brakelight switch completes or interrupts circuit to BTSI solenoid. Depending upon application, energizing or de-energizing BTSI solenoid unlocks gearshift lever from "P" position. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. Individual component testing procedures are not available from manufacturer. To identify model specific components within shift interlock system, component location, wire color, see appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS . For connector terminal identification, see appropriate connector in CONNECTOR VIEWS .
VISUAL INSPECTION
Diagnosis of shift interlock system should begin with a general visual inspection. Each model is similar in function, but may be equipped with a variety of components depending upon application. Before beginning any diagnosis, refer to appropriate wiring diagram to become familiar with the system and for use as a guide to pinpoint areas of concern. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Once familiar with system being diagnosed, check operation of the following
- With ignition switch in LOCK position, gearshift lever should be locked in "P" position.
- With gearshift lever in "P" position, ignition switch should be allowed movement from LOCK position to any desired position and back to LOCK position. Ignition key should be removable while in LOCK position.
- With ignition switch in ON position, gearshift lever should be allowed movement from "P" position. Models equipped with BTSI solenoid require that brake pedal be depressed for this operation.
- With ignition switch in ON position and gearshift lever in any position other than "P" position, ignition key is non-removable. Ignition key is removable only when gearshift lever is moved to "P" position.
If shift interlock system operates as specified, system is functioning properly at this time. If system does not operate as specified, inspect mechanical functions of the following
- Ignition Switch
- Gearshift Lever Assembly
- External Shift Cable/Linkage
- Internal Transaxle/Transmission Shift Linkage
If switch or cable adjustment problems are found, adjust as necessary. See ADJUSTMENTS . If mechanical functions are okay, see the following appropriate test in SYMPTOM TESTS

If adjustment is not possible or does not correct concern, replace necessary components. Some models require that park lock cable and BTSI solenoid be replaced as an assembly.
PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
Note. Module reprogramming is also referred to as module personalization.
REAR INTEGRATION MODULE (RIM)
If Drivers Information Center (DIC) ON and OFF lights are illuminated, settings for that feature will not be able to be changed. When DIC ON and OFF lights are illuminated, this indicates a module did not respond to cluster with personalization information when "Feature Programming" mode was entered.
If DIC ON and OFF lights are blank (not illuminated), cluster has received invalid data from module(s) in question and settings for that feature will not be able to be changed using DIC. This will occur when 2 different modules are involved in same setting and modules do not agree as to whether feature is ON or OFF. This could also occur if a module sends an invalid state to cluster.
Scan tool will have to be used to toggle feature setting for module(s) in question so that they agree or contain valid states. Once they agree, DIC can be used to change settings if needed. Use following steps to personalize module
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure vehicle is in "P" position. If equipped with memory, press appropriate memory button "1" or "2" located on drivers door panel, prior to programming. Press INFO button one or more times until "Feature Programming" prompt appears on DIC.
- Press ON/OFF button to enter "Feature Programming" mode. Press down arrow on INFO button to select personalization feature to be programmed. Press ON/OFF button to turn personalization feature ON or OFF. To exit, press INFO RESET button and turn ignition switch to OFF position.
