DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Road-Sensing Suspension (RSS) system performs 3 functions
- Controls firmness of vehicle ride (this part of the system is called RSS, although the term RSS is also applied to the entire system.
- Adjusts vehicle riding height (this part of the system is called Electronic Level Control, or ELC).
- Increases steering effort as vehicle speed increases (this part of the system is called Speed-Sensitive Steering, or SSS).
RSS control module monitors system for faults. If a fault occurs, codes are stored in memory. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS . Self-diagnostics also allows technician to monitor RSS system data, inputs and outputs.
ROAD-SENSING SUSPENSION (RSS)
Road-Sensing Suspension (RSS) system can change firmness of vehicle ride in 20 milliseconds. Vehicle ride firmness is determined by how easily the strut or shock absorber can be compressed (damping characteristics). In each strut and shock absorber, damper oil flows through a damper valve that has 2 different sized orifices, one for firm mode and the other for soft mode. A damper solenoid valve rotates the damper between positions (modes). Damper solenoid is an integral part of strut and is not serviceable separately from strut. Damper solenoids respond to command signals from RSS control module. RSS control module command signals are based on the following inputs.
RSS Position Sensors
These sensors (one mounted between body and each control arm) sense position of wheel in relation to body. RSS control module utilizes these inputs to control position of RSS damper solenoids. If body or wheel motions are detected, RSS control module will command damper solenoids to a soft or firm position.
RSS Damper Solenoid Valves
RSS shock absorbers/struts provide dampening by forcing fluid through internal orifices to resist suspension movement. Two levels of operation are achieved by redirecting oil flow using a solenoid valve. Soft mode is accomplished by switching solenoid on causing oil to bypass main damper valving. Firm mode is accomplished by switching solenoid off causing oil to flow through main damper valving.
Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) transmits vehicle speed signal to RSS control module. RSS control module utilizes this signal to determine amount of damper control and steering assist.
Steering Wheel Position Sensor
Steering wheel position sensor sends steering wheel position data (angular) to RSS control module. Data is used to estimate vehicle lateral acceleration.
Lift/Dive Signal
Lift and dive occur when the vehicle accelerates and decelerates. When RSS control module receives an active lift/dive signal from PCM, all 4 damper solenoids are commanded to a firm position. PCM calculates lift signal based on inputs from throttle position, transmission gear and vehicle speed. Dive signal is based on rate of change of vehicle speed and brake switch status.
ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL (ELC)
Note. Only electrical testing and diagnosis of ELC system is covered in this article. For trouble shooting, component removal and installation, and system testing, go to SUSPENSION - REAR ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL article.
ELC system automatically raises and lowers vehicle to compensates for changes in riding height (trim height) that occur because of varying vehicle loads. To raise and lower vehicle, ELC system controls air pressure in adjustable rear shock absorbers. When riding height changes, a delay of about 7-27 seconds occurs before ELC system begins to operate.
Air pressure is supplied by a compressor that is powered by an electric motor. An exhaust solenoid on compressor vents system pressure when vehicle needs to be lowered. RSS control module controls the compressor and the exhaust solenoid based on inputs from position sensors. Position sensors sense position of wheel in relation to body.
SPEED-SENSITIVE STEERING (SSS)
Speed-Sensitive Steering (SSS) system, increases steering effort as vehicle speed increases, resulting in a firmer steering feel (road feel) and improved directional stability. System increases steering effort by decreasing amount of power steering fluid pressure applied to the steering gear. As a safety feature, system allows full power steering assist during sudden turns, such as in an evasive maneuver.
RSS control module cycles SSS solenoid valve on and off based on vehicle speed input from Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and steering angle input from steering position sensor. When SSS solenoid valve is off (de-energized), full pump pressure is allowed to flow through high-pressure line, increasing fluid pressure to steering gear. When SSS solenoid valve is on (energized), fluid by-passes pressure line outlet and is routed back into pump, decreasing fluid pressure to steering gear.

POWER STEERING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING
Note. If air was introduced into power steering hydraulic system during servicing, bleed system. Aerated fluid, which appears Light Tan in color, results in poor steering performance and will cause pump damage.
- Turn ignition off. Raise and support front of vehicle with wheels off of ground. Turn wheels fully to left. Add fluid to bring level to FULL COLD mark on dipstick. DO NOT install reservoir cap. Turn wheels from left stop to right stop at least 20 times while an assistant monitors fluid level (add fluid as necessary to maintain level at FULL COLD mark). Ensure engine remains off.
- If reservoir overflows while turning wheel, air is trapped in system; check for leaks such as loose connections. If reservoir does not overflow, start engine. With engine idling, add fluid to bring level to FULL COLD mark. Install reservoir cap. Return wheels to center position.
- Lower vehicle. Continue to run engine for 2 minutes. Turn wheels from left stop to right stop. Check for leaks. Ensure fluid level is at FULL HOT mark when fluid is stabilized at operating temperature. Also, check for smooth power assist, noiseless operation and proper fluid condition (i.e. no bubbles, no foam, no discoloration).
POWER STEERING PUMP BELT
Note. See STEERING SYSTEM - POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING section.

Note. This procedure requires a Tech 1 scan tool. DO NOT sit in vehicle during adjustment.
- Connect Tech 1 scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. Park vehicle on level surface. Close doors. Ensure vehicle is unloaded. If any codes related to rear position sensors or dampers are set, repair cause of codes before continuing. Enter diagnostics. See «USING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS»(/cadillac/deville-concours/1994-1998/remont/electronic-suspension/#suspension-electronic-road-sensing__using-self-diagnostics) under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, monitor RSS DATA RS D13 and RS D14. If voltages are not within normal range, check for bent or disconnected rear position sensors and repair as necessary. To adjust ELC trim height, follow instructions on Tech 1 scan tool.
STEERING AUTOCENTER
Note. This procedure requires a Tech 1 scan tool.
- Connect Tech 1 scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. Enter diagnostics. See «USING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS»(/cadillac/deville-concours/1994-1998/remont/electronic-suspension/#suspension-electronic-road-sensing__using-self-diagnostics) under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Check for RSS steering sensor Code RS0080. If code is set, diagnose and repair before continuing. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position and steering wheel is centered.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, monitor RSS DATA RS D15. If voltage is not 2-3 volts, realign steering sensor. To adjust steering autocenter, follow instructions on Tech 1 scan tool.
CALIBRATING RSS CONTROL MODULE
Note. To ensure NEW RSS control module is calibrated for specific vehicle, Code RS0051 is stored in memory. After replacing RSS control module, it must be calibrated. If NEW RSS control module is not calibrated, code cannot be cleared.
Ensure Tech 1 scan tool is equipped with latest version of chassis application program. Turn ignition off. Connect Tech 1 scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on, engine off. To calibrate RSS control module, follow instructions on Tech 1 scan tool. Perform ELC trim height and steering autocenter adjustments. See ELC TRIM HEIGHT and STEERING AUTOCENTER .
USING SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
Note. Checking system in self-diagnostics mode for more than 30 minutes with engine not running will discharge battery, possibly resulting in false diagnostic information being related or causing a no-start condition. If necessary, connect battery charger (turn ignition off before connecting).
Note. To exit diagnostics at any time, press RESET button on A/C-heater control panel, or turn ignition off.
Entering Diagnostics
Turn ignition on. Simultaneously push OFF and WARMER buttons on A/C-heater control panel.
Segment Check
A segment check of all LEDs on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) should begin. During this check, all segments except the turn signal indicators should illuminate. If all segments do not illuminate, repair or replace IPC. After segment check, diagnostic code display will automatically begin. (Scheme 1)
Diagnostic Code Display
- System will begin displaying codes (if any are stored). (Scheme 2) The first character of code is a letter that indicates which system code applies to. See «SYSTEM LETTER CODE INTERPRETATION»(/cadillac/deville-concours/1994-1998/remont/electronic-suspension/#suspension-electronic-road-sensing) table.
- The fifth character of code is the letter "C" or "H". "C" stands for current code. Current means the fault currently exists (like a hard code), and fault was present the last time the diagnostic test was run. "H" stands for history code. History means fault does not currently exist, but existed before (like an intermittent code), and was not present the last time the diagnostic test was run.
- If no codes are present for a system, a NO XXX CODES message will be displayed (with X being the system displayed). If the communication line for a system is not operating, a NO XXX DATA message will be displayed, indicating that the IPC could not communicate with that system.

NOTES ON INTERMITTENTS
Because RSS control module performs a test for different failures under different driving conditions, it is often necessary to test drive vehicle to cause the failure to occur again and allow a code to set. If failure does not occur again during test drive, a good description of vehicle behavior may be helpful in determining which component or circuit is faulty.
Most intermittent problems are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. Check for the following conditions
- Poor mating of connector halves.
- Terminals not fully seated in connector body.
- Improperly formed or damaged terminals (carefully reform all connector terminals in a problem circuit to increase contact tension).
- Poor terminal-to-wire connection (requires removing terminal from connector body to inspect).
Most of the time, if RSS system detects a fault but the fault clears before the ignition is turned off, RSS function will not be disabled. Some failures will disable RSS function for the entire ignition cycle, even if the fault clears before the ignition is turned off.
When a fault occurs, SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message should come on and remain on until the ignition is turned off and then on again. The following conditions may cause SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message to be displayed intermittently
- An interruption of power to RSS control module (check wiring and fuses).
- Incorrect voltage of power supply circuits (battery or ignition) to RSS control module. Voltage must be more than 10.3 volts or less than 16.0 volts. This condition prevents RSS control module from logging codes and displaying SERVICE RIDE CONTROL message. If this condition occurs while driving, system will not operate normally. When normal voltage is restored, system will operate normally (check charging system).
TESTING & DIAGNOSIS
