Trunk Pull-Down - Power Cadillac DeVille Concours

Door Locks & Anti-Theft Systems 2 illustrations ~554 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

All models use a power trunk pull-down system that pulls down and latches the trunk lid during the last 1" (25 mm) of travel. A combination latch/release mechanism is located in the trunk lid. A permanent magnet pull-down motor is located in the trunk lid opening lower panel. (Scheme 8)

When the trunk lid is closed, very light pressure is required to cause the latch to grab the extended striker on the motor. The motor will then run, taking the lid to its completely closed position. The key lock frame then depresses the plunger switch, breaking the circuit to the motor. The motor will then shut off.

TESTING

Note. Refer to WIRING DIAGRAM for terminal identification.

Check the following items for possible causes of system malfunctions before performing individual tests.

  1. Ensure Trunk Lid Lock Securely Engages Striker
  2. Faulty Fuses Or Circuit Breaker
  3. Loose Or Corroded Connectors
  4. Low Battery Charge
  5. Poor Ground Connections
  6. Linkage Disconnected, Binding Or Bent
  7. Inoperative Lock Or Latch Mechanism

STRIKER DOES NOT EXTEND WITH TRUNK LID UNLATCHED

  1. Disconnect trunk compartment lid pull-down connector. Connect test light between terminals "A" (Orange wire) and "D" (Black wire). If test light does not come on, go to next step. If test light comes on, check trunk lid pull-down and connector for good terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, replace trunk lid pull-down motor.
  2. Connect test light between terminal "A" (Orange wire) and ground. If test light does not come on, go to next step. If test light comes on, check Black wire for an open circuit.
  3. Check if trunk compartment fuse block pull-down fuse is open. If fuse is okay, check Orange wire for an open circuit. If fuse is open, replace fuse. If use opens again, check Orange wire for a short to ground.

STRIKER DOES NOT RETRACT WITH TRUNK LID CLOSED

  1. Disconnect trunk pull-down motor connector. Connect test light between connector terminals "A" and "D". If test light does not come on, go to step 4). If light comes on, reinstall motor connector.
  2. Disconnect trunk lid latch switch connector. Connect fused jumper between terminals "C" (Red wire) and "B" (Black wire). If striker unit retracts, check latch switch connector for proper terminal contact. If terminal contacts are okay, replace trunk lid latch switch.
  3. If striker unit does not retract, connect fused jumper between terminal "C" (Red wire) and ground. If striker unit retracts, check for open in ground circuit. If striker unit does not retract, check for open between latch switch and pull-down motor. If open circuit cannot be found, replace pull-down motor.
  4. If test light did not come on in step 1), connect test light between terminal "A" and ground. If light comes on, repair open in motor ground circuit. If light does not come on, check for open circuit at instrument panel fuse.
  5. If fuse circuit is open, replace fuse and retest circuit. If fuse blows again, repair short to ground in fuse circuit. If fuse does not blow, repair open in fuse circuit between motor and fuse block.

Removal & Installation

Open trunk lid. Disconnect pull-down motor electrical connector. (Scheme 8) Remove motor-to-mounting bracket bolts. Remove motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
