Instrument Panel Cadillac Brougham I

Gauges & Instrument Panels 2 illustrations ~1081 words

DESCRIPTION

The instrument panel contains instruments, indicators and controls necessary for the operation of standard and accessory features. Various telltale warning lights are used to indicate various engine operating conditions.

SPEEDOMETER

Speedometer is driven by a speedometer cable to operate speed indicator and odometer operation. A speed sensor incorporated in the speedometer sends signals to speed sensor buffer, which sends signals to engine control module and cruise control module for cruise control operation.

FUEL GAUGE

  1. Verify that other instrument panel components operate. If components do not operate, check for blown fuse, open in circuit No. 39 (12 volts) and 151 (ground). Check for open in Black wire from instrument panel to ground.
  2. Disconnect Pink fuel sending unit wire. Turn ignition on, gauge should register above full. Connect a good sending unit to Pink wire and ground sending unit. Move float arm and note fuel gauge reading. Reading should fluctuate with float movement. Replace sending unit if gauge now operates correctly.
  3. If gauge needle fails to move, tap gauge and check for sticking gauge. Replace gauge if needle is sticking. If needle remains below "E", gauge is shorted, check for grounded wire behind instrument panel and trunk. If needle remains above "F", circuit is open. Check for disconnected or broken wires behind instrument panel and at trunk and loose gauge mounting nuts.
  4. If needle remains at 1/4 level, calibration resistor is open. Check for loose gauge mounting nuts or cracked resistor. If needle is unstable, check for loose wire connections. If needle fails to read "F" with a full tank, check float arm travel in fuel tank.

OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR

  1. Oil pressure indicator should glow when ignition is on and pressure is below 3-5 psi (.21-.35 kg/cm 2 ). With engine running, if light stays on, disconnect Tan wire at oil pressure sending unit. Light should go out. If light does not go out, check printed circuit. If light goes out, remove sending unit and check pressure with gauge. If pressure is correct, replace sending unit.
  2. If light does not operate, check "gauges" fuse. Disconnect sending unit Tan wire ground. If light illuminates, replace sending unit, making sure threads are clean. If light does not glow, check for burned out bulb, broken wire or poor printed circuit connection.

COOLANT TEMPERATURE INDICATOR

  1. Temperature bulb should glow when engine is cranking and/or when coolant temperature is above 260°F (125°C). If engine is cool and light remains on, disconnect Dark Green wire to sending unit (near A/C compressor). If light goes off, replace sending unit.
  2. If light stays on and does not go off when disconnecting sending unit, lower steering column slightly and disconnect Dark Green wire from ignition switch. If light goes off, replace ignition switch. If light is still on, check continuity between sending unit and printed circuit. If wires are good, replace printed circuit.
  3. If light does not come on with engine cranking, check for blown "gauges" fuse. Disconnect Dark Green wire at sending unit and ground. If light comes on, replace sending unit. If light does not illuminate, check bulb and printed circuit connector.
  4. If bulb and connector are good, lower steering column slightly and ground Dark Green wire at ignition switch. If light comes on, replace ignition switch. If light does not illuminate, check continuity of Dark Green wire. If wire shows continuity, replace printed circuit.

ALTERNATOR INDICATOR

  1. Alternator light should be on when ignition is on and engine stopped. If light is on with ignition off, disconnect leads from alternator terminals No. 1 and 2. If light stays on, leads are shorted. If light goes out, see DELCO-REMY ALTERNATORS & GENERATORS article in ELECTRICAL section.
  2. If light does not come on with ignition on and engine stopped, check bulb and power circuit to bulb. If no problems are found, check bulb ground circuit.
  3. If light stays on with engine running, check charging system, see DELCO-REMY ALTERNATORS & GENERATORS article in ELECTRICAL section. If charging system is okay, check bulb circuit for short to power.

Removal & Installation

Remove top cover screws at each end of instrument panel. Remove screw through access hole above speedometer trim plate. Remove screw through access hole in top of glove box liner. Remove 4 screws at ends of defroster grille. Pull center of cover rearward to free from spring clips and remove. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Removal & Installation

Remove top cover. Remove 3 nuts and light socket securing printed circuit to fuel gauge. Remove 2 screws securing fuel gauge to housing and remove fuel gauge. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove top cover. Disconnect warning light harness and theft deterrent harness (if equipped). Remove 5 screws retaining housing assembly to instrument panel and remove housing. Remove 3 nuts and light socket and remove warning light printed circuit from fuel gauge. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen set screw in left A/C outlet door knob and remove knob. Remove A/C grille using Puller (J-24612). Remove 6 screws retaining bezel to panel (one screw is inside A/C grill). Remove 2 upper and 2 lower screws in steering column cover. Disconnect column seal, and remove trim plate.
  2. With shift lever in "P" position, remove shift indicator clip from steering column. Remove 2 upper screws and 2 lower screws from cluster.
  3. Pull cluster outward. Reach behind cluster and release clip securing speedometer cable. Disconnect speed control sensor connector (if equipped).
  4. Disconnect printed circuit wiring harness connector and remove cluster from vehicle. Remove all sockets and bulbs from cluster. Remove printed circuit from cluster. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 2

Scheme 2
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen set screw in left A/C outlet door knob and remove knob. Remove A/C grille using Puller (J-24612-01). Remove 6 screws retaining bezel to panel (one screw is inside A/C grille). Remove 2 upper and 2 lower screws in steering column cover. Disconnect column seal and remove trim plate.
  2. Remove 3 headlight switch screws. On vehicles equipped with cruise control, remove 2 screws securing cruise control switch to instrument panel. Slide cruise control switch forward to remove light switch. Disconnect 2-piece connector from headlight switch.
  3. Disconnect guidematic and twilight sentinel from under instrument panel (if equipped). Pull out headlight switch knob fully, depress knob release button on back of switch and remove knob. Remove trim bezel, nut and switch from instrument panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.
