Power Mirror System Buick Riviera VIII

Mirrors 1 illustration ~1349 words

DESCRIPTION

One mirror control switch adjusts both left (driver side) and right (passenger side) mirrors. Rotate mirror select switch left (counterclockwise) or right (clockwise) to select mirror, and use joystick to adjust mirror. Heated mirrors are included with power mirrors. Heating elements are not functional unless vehicle is also equipped with electric rear window defogger.

Each power mirror assembly contains 2 reversible motors: an up/down motor and a left/right motor. Mirror control switch reverses polarity of motor circuit to change direction of mirror movement. Each motor contains a self-resetting circuit breaker, which opens when mirror reaches its mechanical limit of travel. On vehicles with memory seat/mirror systems, each power mirror assembly contains potentiometers that are used to determine mirror position.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Before proceeding with specific testing, check the following for proper operation

  1. Check courtesy lights for proper operation.
  2. Check fuses, and replace as necessary.
  3. Check and ensure grounds are clean and tight.
  4. Check for broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction, but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. These circuits may be intermittent or resistive when loaded, and if possible, should be checked by monitoring voltage drop with system operational (under load).
  5. Check for proper installation of aftermarket electronic equipment.

SYSTEM TESTING

Note. Before performing following tests, ensure circuit ground, circuit harness wiring and circuit fuse are okay. Also, ensure all circuit connections are clean and tight.

Note. For testing of heated mirrors, see appropriate DEFOGGER - MIRROR & REAR WINDOW article.

Note. For testing and diagnosis of memory mirror/memory seat, see appropriate SEATS - POWER article.

BOTH MIRRORS DO NOT OPERATE

  1. Disconnect power mirror switch connector. Connect test light between Orange wire at power mirror switch connector and ground. If test light glows, go to next step. If test light does not glow, repair poor connections or open in Orange wire between power mirror switch and fuse block.
  2. Connect test light between Orange and Black wires at power mirror switch. If test light glows, check for poor connections at power mirror switch. If connections are okay, replace power mirror switch. If test light does not glow, repair poor connections or open in Black wire.

LEFT MIRROR DOES NOT OPERATE IN LEFT/RIGHT, UP/DOWN OR ANY POSITION

  1. Disconnect left power mirror connector. Disconnect power mirror switch connector. Connect Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) between White wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and left power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in White wire between power mirror switch and left power mirror.
  2. Connect DVOM between Light Blue wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and left power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Light Blue wire between power mirror switch and left power mirror.
  3. Connect DVOM between Light Green wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and left power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Light Green wire between power mirror switch and left power mirror.
  4. Connect DVOM between Yellow wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and left power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Yellow wire between power mirror switch and left power mirror.
  5. Leave left power mirror connector disconnected. Move power mirror switch to left position. Connect test light between Light Green wire at left power mirror connector and ground. Move power mirror switch to down position. If test light glows, go to next step. If test light does not glow, replace power mirror switch.
  6. Connect test light between White wire at left power mirror connector and ground. Move power mirror switch to right position. If test light glows, replace left power mirror. If test light does not glow, replace power mirror switch.

RIGHT MIRROR DOES NOT OPERATE IN LEFT/RIGHT, UP/DOWN OR ANY POSITION

  1. Disconnect right power mirror connector. Disconnect power mirror switch connector. Connect Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) between Red/White wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and right power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Red/White wire between power mirror switch and right power mirror.
  2. Connect DVOM between Light Blue wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and right power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Light Blue wire between power mirror switch and right power mirror.
  3. Connect DVOM between Purple/White wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and right power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Purple/White wire between power mirror switch and right power mirror.
  4. Connect DVOM between Yellow wire terminals at power mirror switch connector and right power mirror connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, repair open in Yellow wire between power mirror switch and right power mirror.
  5. Leave right power mirror connector disconnected. Move power mirror switch to right position. Connect test light between Purple/White wire at right power mirror connector and ground. Move power mirror switch to down position. If test light glows, go to next step. If test light does not glow, replace power mirror switch.
  6. Connect test light between Red/White wire at right power mirror connector and ground. Move power mirror switch to right position. If test light glows, replace right power mirror. If test light does not glow, replace power mirror switch.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
CAUTIONOn some models, momentary actuation of power window switch can cause window to move directly to fully open position. When working inside door, leave ignition off whenever possible.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Insert flat tool between switch plate and trim panel, and disengage spring clip. If switch plate is attached to trim panel with screws, remove screws. Disconnect outside mirror control switch electrical connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Pull mirror and backing plate from mirror housing. Disconnect electrical connectors. Ensure springs on actuator shafts are seated in groove.
  2. To install, snap actuator shafts into drive unit. Reconnect electrical connectors. Rotate actuator shafts to align ears with corresponding slots in back side of mirror face. Align swivel on drive unit to pivot points on backing plate.
  3. Using a block of wood to distribute pressure, push mirror in until it snaps. Tilt mirror toward upper actuator shaft, and push in on block until ratchet sound stops. Tilt mirror toward outside actuator shaft, and push in on block until ratchet sound stops. Check mirror operation.
  1. Cover door to avoid damage to painted surface. Tape mirror, then break mirror glass. Remove broken glass from mirror frame. Wipe inside of mirror frame clean.
  2. To install, remove paper backing from replacement mirror glass. Center mirror glass in mirror frame, and firmly press into place.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unsnap outside mirror and case from mirror shell. Noting position of mirror motor, remove mirror motor bolts and screws.
  2. Beginning with bottom wire, label wires in numerical order to aid in installation procedure. Cut wires from motor as close to motor as possible. Remove mirror motor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Splice wires in proper order.

POWER MIRROR ASSEMBLY

Note. On some models, if removing right power mirror, it may be necessary to detach part of instrument panel.

Fold back carpet and remove screw, if necessary. Remove switch plates. Using Door Trim Pad and Garnish Clip Remover (J 38778), remove trim. Remove door trim panel. Remove water deflector, if necessary. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove nuts and power mirror assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten power mirror nuts to specification.
