Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine flywheel. Refer to «Engine Flywheel Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  2. Remove the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  3. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal and housing. Refer to «Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal and Housing Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__crankshaft-rear-oil-seal-and-housing) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal and housing. Refer to «Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal and Housing Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-4-of-5-36l-ly7__crankshaft-rear-oil-seal-and-housing) .
  2. Install the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  3. Install the engine flywheel. Refer to «Engine Flywheel Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  1. Remove the primary timing chain. Refer to «Primary Camshaft Drive Chain and Sprockets Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  2. Remove the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to «Crankshaft Sprocket Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  3. Remove the oil pump bolts and the oil pump. Refer to «Oil Pump Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pump-removal) .
  4. Perform the following steps as necessary: Disassemble the oil pump. Refer to «Oil Pump Disassemble»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pump-disassemble) . Clean and inspect the oil pump. Refer to «Oil Pump Cleaning and Inspection»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  1. Assemble the oil pump as necessary. Refer to «Oil Pump Assemble»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pump-assemble) .
  2. Install the oil pump. Refer to «Oil Pump Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-4-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pump-installation) .
  3. Install the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to «Crankshaft Sprocket Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-4-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  4. Install the primary timing chain. Refer to «Primary Camshaft Drive Chain and Sprockets Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  1. Remove the powertrain module from the vehicle and install the engine to an engine stand. Refer to «Engine Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  2. Remove the A/C compressor with the hoses from the engine. Refer to «Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7__air-conditioning-ac-compressor-removal) .
  3. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to «Engine Front Cover Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  4. Remove the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pan-removal) .
  5. Perform the following steps as necessary. Disassemble the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Disassemble»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pan-disassemble) Clean and inspect the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  1. Assemble the oil pan as necessary. Refer to «Oil Pan Assemble»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-3-of-5-36l-ly7__oil-pan-assemble) .
  2. Install the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-4-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  3. Install the engine front cover. Refer to «Engine Front Cover Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  4. Install the A/C compressor with the hoses to the engine. Refer to «Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-5-of-5-36l-ly7__air-conditioning-ac-compressor-installation) .
  5. Install the engine to the transmission and frame and install the assembled powertrain module to the vehicle. Refer to «Engine Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the oil pressure sensor.
  1. Install the oil pressure sensor. Tighten: Tighten the oil pressure sensor to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
  2. Connect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  1. Drain the engine oil. Refer to «Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from engine oil level switch.
  3. Remove the engine oil level switch from the oil pan.
  1. Install the engine oil level switch to the oil pan. Tighten: Tighten the engine oil level switch to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
  2. Connect the electrical connector to engine oil level switch.
  3. Fill the engine oil. Refer to «Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  4. Inspect for oil leaks.
  1. Remove the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  2. Remove the oil pan scraper bolts.
  3. Remove the oil pan scraper.
  4. Remove the oil suction pipe bolts.
  5. Remove the oil suction pipe.
  6. Remove the oil suction tube seal from the oil suction tube. Discard the oil suction tube seal.
  1. Install a NEW oil suction tube seal onto the oil suction tube. DO NOT reuse the old oil suction tube seal.
  2. Install the oil suction pipe.
  3. Install the oil suction pipe bolts. Tighten: Tighten the oil suction pipe bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  4. Install the oil pan scraper.
  5. Install the oil pan scraper bolts. Tighten: Tighten the oil pan scraper bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  6. Install the oil pan. Refer to «Oil Pan Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .

Scheme 42: Removal Procedure
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Intake Duct Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-36l-ly7-introduction) in Engine Controls - 3.6L (LY7).
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the engine block. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
  4. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the generator and the starter. Refer to «Battery Positive Cable Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.
  5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  6. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine. Refer to «Radiator Hose Replacement - Inlet (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) and «Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to «Heater Hose Replacement - Inlet (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) and «Heater Hose Replacement - Outlet (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) in HVAC Systems - Manual.
  8. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to «Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) and «Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  9. Disconnect the fuel pressure and evaporative emission (EVAP) pipes from the engine. Refer to «Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Metal Collar)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-36l-ly7-introduction) and «Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Plastic Collar)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-36l-ly7-introduction) in Engine Controls - 3.6L (LY7).
  10. Remove the engine control module (ECM) chassis (outboard) side electrical connector from the ECM.
  11. Remove the wiring harness ground from the transmission.
  12. Remove the vacuum brake booster hose from the intake manifold.
  13. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  14. Disconnect the discharge hose from the condenser. Refer to «Discharge Hose Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  15. Disconnect the suction hose from the evaporator outlet tube. Refer to «Suction Hose Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  16. Secure the discharge and suction hoses to the powertrain.
  17. Remove the wiring harness ground from the transmission.
  18. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/hoistjack/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) in General Information.
  19. If you will be separating the engine from the transmission remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to «Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  20. Drain the engine oil. Refer to «Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-la1) .
  21. If the vehicle is equipped with all wheel drive (AWD), remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to «Propeller Shaft Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#propeller-shaft) in Propeller Shaft.
  22. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to «Catalytic Converter Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/exhaust/#engine-exhaust-system) in Engine Exhaust.
  23. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/wheel-tire-system/#tires-and-wheels) in Tires and Wheels.
  24. Remove lower radiator air baffle. Refer to «Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  25. Remove the engine splash shields. Refer to «Splash Shield Replacement - Engine»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front-end) in Body Front End.
  26. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector and secure the wiring harness to the vehicle.
  27. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the transaxle. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  28. Remove the front wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses from the lower control arms and the frame.
  29. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to «Steering Knuckle Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-system) in Front Suspension.
  30. Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles. Refer to «Lower Ball Joint Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-system) in Front Suspension.
  31. Remove the transaxle cooler lines from the transaxle. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  32. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to «Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Front»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/axle-shafts/#wheel-drive-shafts__wheel-drive-shaft-replacement-front) in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  33. Rotate the struts and reposition the drive axles toward the rear of the vehicle in order to provide clearance for the powertrain to be removed.
  34. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to «Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#steering-wheel-steering-column) in Steering Wheel and Column.
  35. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to «Engine Mount Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  36. Remove the transmission mount lower nuts. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Mount Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  37. Position a powertrain lift table below the powertrain.
  38. Lower the vehicle until the powertrain is supported by the powertrain lift table.
  39. Remove the frame bolts. Refer to «Frame Replacement - Front (W/AWD)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) or «Frame Replacement - Front (W/FWD)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) in Frame and Underbody.
  40. Carefully raise the vehicle or lower the powertrain table in order to remove the powertrain from the vehicle.
  41. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to «Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/exhaust/#engine-exhaust-system) in Engine Exhaust.
  42. Remove the coolant inlet pipe. Refer to «Coolant Pipe Replacement - Inlet»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  43. Perform the following steps if it is necessary to separate the engine from the transmission. IMPORTANT: Do not disconnect the power steering pipes or drain the power steering fluid. Remove the power steering pressure pipe/hose from the water outlet. Refer to «Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) in Power Steering System. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «Drive Belt Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) . Remove the power steering reservoir and reposition to provide access. Refer to «Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) in Power Steering System. Remove and reposition the power steering pump with the power steering pipe/hose. Refer to «Power Steering Pump Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) . Remove the transfer case brace. Refer to «Support Brace Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/transfer-case/#transfer-case-steyr) in Transfer Case - Steyr. Remove the engine mount bracket with the engine mount. Refer to «Engine Mount Bracket Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) . Remove the transmission lower brace. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E. Remove the transmission upper brace nut located behind the power steering pump. Remove the engine to transmission (bell housing) bolts. Refer to «Transmission Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  44. Use 4 M10x1.5x40 (GM P/N 11519182 or equivalent) bolts to install the EN 46114 engine lift brackets to the left rear and right front cylinder heads. Tighten: Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).
  45. Use an engine hoist in order to separate the engine from the transmission and the frame.
  46. Install the engine to a suitable engine stand.
  47. Refer to the appropriate service information in order to remove the necessary components from the engine.

  3. Install the engine to the transmission and the frame at the powertrain lift table.
  4. Remove the EN 46114 engine lift brackets.
  5. Install the engine to transmission (bell housing) bolts. Refer to «Transmission Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  6. Install the transmission upper brace nut located behind the power steering pump. Tighten: Tighten the transmission upper brace nut to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  7. Install the transmission lower brace. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  8. Install the engine mount bracket with the engine mount. Refer to «Engine Mount Bracket Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  9. Install the transfer case brace. Refer to «Support Brace Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/transfer-case/#transfer-case-steyr) in Transfer Case - Steyr.
  10. Install the power steering pump with the power steering pipe/hose. Refer to «Power Steering Pump Removal»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-2-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  11. Install the power steering reservoir and reposition to provide access. Refer to «Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) in Power Steering System.
  12. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to «Drive Belt Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  13. Install the power steering pressure pipe/hose to the water outlet. Refer to «Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system) in Power Steering System.
  14. Install the coolant inlet pipe. Refer to «Coolant Pipe Replacement - Inlet»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  15. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to «Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/exhaust/#engine-exhaust-system) in Engine Exhaust.
  16. Carefully lower the vehicle or raise the powertrain table in order to install the powertrain to the vehicle.
  17. Install the frame bolts. Refer to «Frame Replacement - Front (W/AWD)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) or «Frame Replacement - Front (W/FWD)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/frames-subframes-crossmembers/#frame-and-underbody) in Frame and Underbody.
  18. Raise the vehicle and remove the powertrain lift table.
  19. Install the transmission mount lower nuts. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Mount Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  20. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to «Engine Mount Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  21. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to «Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#steering-wheel-steering-column) in Steering Wheel and Column.
  22. Rotate the struts and install the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to «Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Front»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/axle-shafts/#wheel-drive-shafts__wheel-drive-shaft-replacement-front) in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  23. Install the transaxle cooler lines to the transaxle. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  24. Install the lower ball joints to the knuckles. Refer to «Lower Ball Joint Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-system) in Front Suspension.
  25. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to «Steering Knuckle Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-system) in Front Suspension.
  26. Install the front wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses to the lower control arms and the frame.
  27. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the transaxle. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  28. Connect the VSS electrical connector and secure the wiring harness to the vehicle.
  29. Install the engine splash shields. Refer to «Splash Shield Replacement - Engine»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front-end) in Body Front End.
  30. Install the lower radiator air baffle. Refer to «Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  31. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/wheel-tire-system/#tires-and-wheels) in Tires and Wheels.
  32. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to «Catalytic Converter Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/exhaust/#engine-exhaust-system) in Engine Exhaust.
  33. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD, install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to «Propeller Shaft Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#propeller-shaft) in Propeller Shaft.
  34. Install the torque converter bolts as necessary. Refer to «Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxle-4t65-e-introduction-service-replacement) in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36. Fill the engine oil as necessary. Refer to «Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-34l-la1) .
  37. Install the transmission electrical connector.
  38. Connect the suction hose to the evaporator outlet pipe. Refer to «Suction Hose Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  39. Connect the discharge hose to the condenser. Refer to «Discharge Hose Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  40. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to «Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning__refrigerant-recovery-and-recharging) in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  41. Install the brake booster vacuum hose to the intake manifold.
  42. Install the transmission ground wire and the bolt. Tighten: Tighten the transmission ground bolt 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
  43. Install the ECM chassis (outboard) side electrical connector to the ECM.
  44. Connect the fuel pressure and EVAP pipes to the engine. Refer to «Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Metal Collar)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-36l-ly7-introduction) and «Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Plastic Collar)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-36l-ly7-introduction) in Engine Controls - 3.6L (LY7).
  45. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to «Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) and «Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-repair-instructions-1-of-5-36l-ly7) .
  46. Connect the heater hoses to the engine.   47. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.   48. Fill the cooling system. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) in Engine Cooling.
  49. Connect the battery positive cable to the generator and the starter. Refer to «Battery Positive Cable Replacement (LY7)»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) in Engine Electrical.

  2. Position the oil drain pan under the engine oil drain plug.
  3. Remove the engine oil drain plug.
  4. Clean and inspect the engine oil drain plug, repair or replace if necessary.
  5. Clean and inspect the engine oil drain plug sealing surface on the oil pan, repair or replace oil pan if necessary.
  6. Remove the oil filter.
  1. Lightly oil the replacement oil filter gasket with clean oil and install the new oil filter.
  2. Install the new oil filter. Refer to «Maintenance Items»(/buick/rendezvous/i-2001-2007/remont/lubrication-system/#maintenance-and-lubrication__maintenance-items) in Maintenance and Lubrication. Tighten: Tighten the new oil filter to 3/4 to 1 full turn, after the oil filter gasket contacts the oil filter mounting surface.
  3. Install the engine oil drain plug. Tighten: Tighten the engine oil drain plug to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
  4. Remove the oil drain pan.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Fill the engine with new engine oil. Left Side Harness Connections

  1. Remove the right torque strut bracket bolts.
  2. Remove the right torque strut bracket.
  3. Remove the engine control module (ECM) ground harness terminal screw from the ECM lug.
  4. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the ECM module.
  5. Remove the ECM module nuts.
  6. Remove the ECM module from the ECM bracket.
  7. Remove the ECM bracket bolts.
  8. Remove the ECM bracket.
  9. Remove the radiator inlet hose support bolt.
  10. Remove the radiator inlet hose support.
  11. Remove the engine wiring harness bracket bolts from the intake manifold.
  12. Remove the engine wiring harness ECM ground bolt from the left cylinder head.
  13. Remove the engine wiring harness bracket bolts from the front lower left side of the engine.
  14. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the left camshaft position actuator valves.
  15. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the left camshaft position sensors.
  16. Remove the engine wiring harness ground bolt from the left cylinder head.
  17. Slide the heat shield away from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor in order to access the wiring harness connector.
  18. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the ECT sensor.
  19. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the generator.
  20. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the A/C compressor.
  21. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the left knock sensor.
  22. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the oil pressure sender.
  23. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the starter motor solenoid.
  24. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the fuel injector harness.
  25. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the left ignition coils.
  26. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the front of the left camshaft cover.
  27. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the top of the left camshaft cover.
  28. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the barometric (BARO) sensor.
  29. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the throttle body connector.

Right Side Harness Connections

  1. Remove the engine wiring harness ground bolt from the side of the right cylinder head at the rear.
  2. Remove the engine wiring harness ground bolt from the side of the right cylinder head at the front.
  3. Remove the right exhaust manifold lower heat shield bolts.
  4. Remove the right exhaust manifold lower heat shield.
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the oil level sensor.
  6. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the crankshaft position sensor.
  7. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the right knock sensor.
  8. Remove the engine wiring harness bracket bolt from the lower right side of the engine.
  9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the communicator valve.
  10. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the right camshaft position actuator valves.
  11. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the right camshaft position sensors.
  12. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the EVAP solenoid.
  13. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the right ignition coils.
  14. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the front of the right camshaft cover.
  15. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the top of the right camshaft cover.
  16. Remove the engine wiring harness from the engine.

Drive Belt Removal

  1. Insert a 1/2 inch drive ratchet into the outer drive belt tensioner.
  2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
  3. Remove the drive belt from around the drive belt idler pulley.
  4. Slowly rotate the drive belt tensioner counterclockwise.
  5. Remove the 1/2 inch drive ratchet.
  6. Remove the drive belt from around the following: Crankshaft balancer Generator Air conditioning compressor Power steering pump pulley Water pump pulley Drive belt tensioner

Drive Belt Tensioner Removal

  1. Remove the drive belt tensioner bracket bolts.
  2. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly.

Drive Belt Idler Pulley Removal

  1. Remove the drive belt idler pulley bolt.
  2. Remove the drive belt idler pulley.

Generator Removal

  1. Remove the generator bolts.
  2. Remove the generator.

Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Removal

  1. Remove the air conditioning compressor bolts.
  2. Remove the air conditioning compressor.

J 25034-C Pulley Remover

  1. If necessary, using the J 25034-C , remove the power steering pump pulley to access the power steering pump bolts.
  2. Remove the power steering pump side bolt.
  3. Remove the power steering pump front bolt.
  4. Remove the power steering pump.

Starter Motor Removal

  1. Remove the starter motor bolts.
  2. Remove the starter motor.

Oil Level Indicator and Tube Removal

  1. Remove the oil level indicator tube bracket bolt.
  2. Remove the oil level indicator and tube by sliding the tube out from the lower crankcase hole.
  3. Remove and discard the O-ring from the oil level indicator tube if damaged.

Exhaust Manifold Removal - Left

  1. Remove the left torque strut bracket bolts.
  2. Remove the left torque strut bracket.
  3. Remove the left exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  4. Remove the left exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
  6. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts from the left cylinder head.
  7. Remove the left exhaust manifold.
  8. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

Oil Filter Adapter Removal

  1. Remove and properly dispose of the oil filter.
  2. Remove the oil filter adapter bolts from the engine block.
  3. Remove the oil filter adapter.
  4. Remove and discard the.
  5. Remove the left knock sensor bolt.
  6. Remove the left knock sensor.

Exhaust Manifold Removal - Right

  1. Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  2. Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts from the right cylinder head.
  4. Remove the right exhaust manifold.
  5. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.
  6. Remove the block heater cartridge, if equipped.
  7. Remove the right knock sensor bolt.
  8. Remove the right knock sensor.
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor bolt.
  10. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  11. Remove and discard the crankshaft position sensor O-ring, if damaged.

Water Outlet Removal

  1. Remove the water outlet bolts.
  2. Remove the water outlet.
  3. Remove and discard the water outlet gasket and O-ring.

Thermostat Housing Removal

  1. Remove the heater inlet/outlet pipe assembly bolts.
  2. Remove the heater inlet/outlet pipe assembly.
  3. Remove and discard the heater inlet/outlet pipe gasket and O-ring.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing.
  6. Remove and discard the thermostat housing gasket.

Crankshaft Balancer Removal

Tools Required

  1. EN 46106 Flywheel Holding Tool
  2. J 38416-2 Crankshaft Button
  3. J 41816 Crankshaft Balancer Remover
  1. Install the EN 46106 through the starter mounting hole.
  2. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  3. Install the J 38416-2 in the nose of the crankshaft.
  4. Install the J 41816 in order to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  5. Tighten the center bolt of the J 41816 in order to pull the crankshaft balancer off of the crankshaft.
  6. Remove the J 41816 from the crankshaft balancer.

EN 46106 Flywheel Holding Tool

  1. Remove the engine flywheel bolts and discard.
  2. Remove the engine flywheel from the crankshaft.
  3. Remove the EN 46106 .

Intake Manifold Removal

  1. Disconnect and remove the brake booster hose from the upper intake manifold.
  2. Disconnect and remove the vehicle-to-solenoid evaporative (EVAP) hose from the EVAP solenoid.
  3. Remove the intake manifold-to-solenoid EVAP hose bracket bolt from the intake manifold.
  4. Disconnect and remove the intake manifold-to-solenoid EVAP hose from the intake manifold and from the EVAP solenoid.
  5. Remove the EVAP solenoid bolt.
  6. Remove the EVAP solenoid.
  7. Disconnect and remove the dirty air positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose from the intake manifold and the right camshaft cover fitting.
  8. Disconnect and remove the fresh air PCV hose from the left camshaft cover fitting.
  9. Remove the intake manifold bolts.
  10. Remove the intake manifold assembly.
  11. Remove the lower intake manifold gasket.

Camshaft Cover Removal - Left

  1. Remove each ignition coil bolt.
  2. Raise each ignition coil through the camshaft cover from the spark plug tube. DO NOT damage the spark plug or ignition coil perimeter seals.
  3. Remove the spark plugs.
  4. Remove the left camshaft cover bolts.
  5. Remove the left camshaft cover from the left cylinder head.

Camshaft Cover Removal - Right

  1. Remove each ignition coil bolt.
  2. Raise each ignition coil through the camshaft cover from the spark plug tube. DO NOT damage the spark plug or ignition coil perimeter seals.
  3. Remove the spark plugs.
  4. Remove the right camshaft cover bolts.
  5. Remove the right camshaft cover from the right cylinder head.

EN 46104 Water Pump Pulley Holding Tool

  1. Install the EN 46104 onto the water pump pulley.
  2. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  3. Remove the water pump pulley.
  4. Remove the water pump bolts.
  5. Remove the water pump from the front cover.
  6. Remove the water pump gasket.

Engine Front Cover Removal

Tools Required

  1. EN 46105 Camshaft Locking Tool
  2. EN 46111 Crankshaft Rotational Socket
  1. Remove the camshaft position actuator valve bolts.
  2. Remove the camshaft position actuator valves from the front cover.
  3. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  4. Loosely install a 10 x 1.5 mm bolt in the "jackscrew" hole (1).
  5. Using the pry points (2) located at the edge of the front cover and the "jackscrew", shear the RTV sealant.
  6. Remove the engine front cover.
  7. Using the EN 46111 , rotate the crankshaft until the left cylinder head camshafts align with the EN 46105-2 and the right cylinder head camshafts align with the EN 46105-1.
  8. Install the EN 46105-1 to the right camshafts.
  9. Install the EN 46105-2 to the left camshafts.

Secondary Camshaft Drive Chain Tensioner Removal - Right

  1. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner bolts.
  2. Remove the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  3. Remove and discard the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.
  4. Inspect the right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner mounting surface on the right cylinder head for burrs or any defects that would degrade the sealing of the NEW right secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner gasket.

The markings have the following meanings: The raised feature must always be oriented toward the center of the cylinder head. The I indicates the intake camshaft. The E indicates the exhaust camshaft. The number indicates the journal position from the front of the engine.
  4. Remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts.
  5. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
  6. Remove the camshafts.
  7. Replace the camshaft bearing caps and bolts.
