MANUAL

Note. For manual transmission/transaxle replacement procedures, see appropriate article in the CLUTCHES Section.

  1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove coolant reservoir. Disconnect shift cable and transaxle throttle valve cable from transaxle. Remove throttle cable bracket and brake booster hose (if equipped). Remove bolts securing torque struts to engine.
  2. Remove left torque strut bracket. Disconnect fluid cooler lines from transaxle. Support engine from top using Engine Support Fixture (J-28467-A). Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Remove front wheels. Remove caliper/bracket assemblies and rotors. Remove both lower engine splash shields.
  3. Remove axle assemblies. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. Separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Separate lower ball joints at control arms and steering knuckles. See BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in the SUSPENSION Section. Remove rack and pinion heat shield.
  4. Remove bolts holding main engine wiring harness to transaxle case. Wire rack and pinion to exhaust and remove rack and pinion bolts from frame. Remove bolts holding power steering lines to frame. Remove engine and transaxle mounts from frame. Support frame with a jack stand at each end and remove frame-to-body mount bolts.
  5. Remove frame with both lower control arms and stabilizer shaft attached by working frame downward toward rear of vehicle. Remove flexplate cover and torque converter bolts. Remove starter bolts and support starter. Disconnect ground cable from transaxle. Remove fluid fill tube bolt and mount bracket.
  6. Lower vehicle. Disconnect electrical connectors as necessary. Remove fluid fill tube. Lower left side of engine about 4". Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Remove fuel line bracket from transaxle. Install transaxle jack. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove transaxle.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install frame insulators and spacers, if removed. Ensure insulators are completely seated against frame.
  2. Align frame to body by inserting two 8" long pins in alignment holes on right side of frame. With the aid of a helper, position frame and install (but DO NOT tighten) new body mount bolts. To maintain alignment, tighten right side, then left side body mount bolts. Adjust transaxle throttle valve cable and shift cables.
  1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect shift cable from transaxle lever and remove cable from bracket. Disconnect transaxle throttle valve cable from throttle linkage. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Support engine from top using Engine Support Fixture (J-28467-A).
  2. Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Remove front wheels. Remove splash shields. Remove power steering rack and pinion heat shield. Remove steering rack, and then wire it to frame. Remove power steering cooler lines from frame. Remove engine mount lower retaining nuts.
  3. Separate ball joints at steering knuckles. See BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in the SUSPENSION Section. Support frame with jack stand. Remove frame. Remove torque converter cover. Remove torque converter bolts.
  4. Remove wiring harness from transaxle. Disconnect fluid cooler lines from transaxle. Remove drive axles from transaxle and support them to body. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
  5. Remove transaxle brace bolts. Disconnect electrical connectors as necessary. Support transaxle with jack stand. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove transaxle.
  1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Disconnect shift cable and bracket from transaxle. Disconnect electrical connectors and vacuum hoses as necessary. Support engine from top using Engine Support Fixture (J-28467-A).
  2. Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Remove front wheels and left splash shield. Remove power steering rack and pinion, and then wire it to body. Separate ball joints at steering knuckles. See BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in the SUSPENSION Section.
  3. Remove power steering cooler lines from frame. Remove engine mount nuts. Loosen lower splash shield. Support frame with jack stand. Remove frame. Remove alternator splash shield. Remove torque converter cover. Remove torque converter bolts. Remove drive axles from transaxle. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
  4. Remove transaxle brace bolts. Support transaxle with jack stand. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Disconnect fluid cooler lines from transaxle. Lower side of transaxle using engine support fixture. Remove transaxle assembly.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/buick/regal/iii-1988-1997/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at) table at end of article. Install frame insulators and spacers if removed. Ensure insulators are completely seated against frame. Align frame to body by inserting two 8" long pins in alignment holes on right side of frame.
  2. With the aid of a helper, position frame and install (but DO NOT tighten) new body mount bolts. To maintain alignment, tighten right side, then left side body mount bolts. Adjust transaxle throttle valve cable and shift cable. Fill transaxle to proper fluid level.
