TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. To trouble shoot mechanical engine components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Removal & Installation
- Disconnect battery cables at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect electrical harness at bulkhead. Disconnect electrical connector at brake cylinder.
- Remove accelerator cable and vacuum hoses from carburetor. Remove power steering hose at cut-off switch. Remove vacuum hoses at map sensor and canister. Disconnect A/C relay switches.
- Remove power steering return hose at pump. Disconnect ECM wire connections. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses. Remove electrical connections from temperature switch at thermostat housing.
- Disconnect transaxle shift cable at transaxle. Hoist vehicle. Remove speedometer cable. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and remove from converter. Remove heater hoses and fuel lines. Remove transaxle cooler lines.
- Remove both front wheels. Remove right-hand spoiler section and splash shield. Remove right and left brake calipers and support with wire. Remove right and left tie rod ends.
- Disconnect electrical connections at A/C compressor. Remove A/C compressor and mounting brackets. Support A/C compressor with wire in wheel opening. Remove front suspension attaching bolts.
- Lower vehicle. Support front of vehicle by placing 2 jack stands under core support. Position front post hoist to rear of cowl. Position wood block on front post hoist. Raise vehicle enough to remove jack stands.
- Position 4-wheel dolly under engine and transaxle assembly. Position wood blocks under engine and transaxle only. Allow support rails to hang free.
- Slightly lower vehicle onto 4-wheel dolly. Remove rear transaxle mounting bolts. Remove left front engine mounting bolts. Remove 2 engine support to body mounting bolts behind right-hand inner axle U-joint.
- Remove 1 mounting bolt and nut from right-hand chassis side rail to engine mount bracket. Remove 6 strut attaching nuts. Raise vehicle letting engine, transaxle and suspension rest on 4-wheel dolly.
- Disconnect battery cables at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. If equipped, remove power steering pump. Remove window washer bottle. If equipped with A/C, remove relay bracket at bulkhead connector. Remove bulkhead connector.
- If equipped, remove cruise control servo bracket. Disconnect all vacuum hoses and wiring from engine. Remove vacuum booster-to-master cylinder bolts and lay vacuum booster aside. Remove heater hose at hot water pipe. Remove fan assembly. Remove horn. Remove carburetor linkage.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove heater hose and fuel line at intake manifold. If equipped, remove A/C compressor brace. Remove exhaust shield. Remove starter. Remove exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Remove front tires.
- Remove stabilizer at lower control arms. Remove ball joints from steering knuckle. Remove drive axles at transaxle. Remove transaxle strut. If A/C equipped, remove inner fender shield, drive belt and compressor.
- Remove front motor mount nuts. If equipped with manual transaxle, remove clutch cable at transaxle. If equipped with automatic transaxle, remove detent cable at transaxle. On all models, install engine lift. Remove transaxle mount and bracket. Remove engine.
- Disconnect battery cables at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and heat tube. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect vacuum lines. Remove accelerator and transaxle linkage at carburetor.
- Remove upper radiator hose. If A/C equipped, remove compressor from mounting brackets and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines connected. Remove front engine strut assembly. Disconnect heater hoses at engine.
- Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts, leaving upper 2 bolts installed. Remove front mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove converter housing inspection cover. Remove converter-to-flex plate bolts. Remove starter motor.
- If equipped, remove power steering pump and bracket and position aside. Remove lower radiator hose. Remove 2 rear transaxle support bracket bolts. Remove fuel line at fuel pump.
- Position jack and a wood block under transaxle and raise engine and transaxle until front engine mount studs clear cradle.
- Install engine lift and slightly raise engine. Remove 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts and remove engine.
- Disconnect battery cables at battery. Remove air cleaner. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove front engine mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove starter motor and position aside with wiring attached.
- Remove flywheel housing inspection cover. Lower vehicle. Remove air cleaner. Remove bell housing-to-engine bolts. Remove forward torque reaction rod from engine and radiator core support. If A/C equipped, remove compressor and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines connected.
- Remove vacuum hoses at canister. If equipped, remove power steering hose. Remove all vacuum hoses and electrical connectors at solenoid. Remove heater blower motor. Disconnect accelerator cable at carburetor. Drain cooling system.
- Disconnect heater hose at engine. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect engine wiring harness at bulkhead connector. Install engine lift and slightly lift engine. Remove heater hose and fuel line at intake manifold. Remove engine.
- Disconnect battery cables from battery. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and position aside. If A/C equipped, remove AIR pump and bracket. Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and lay aside.
- Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect accelerator cable and T.V. cable, if equipped. Disconnect engine harness from ECM. Disconnect engine harness from junction block at left side of dash panel.
- Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from engine. Remove power steering pump and bracket from engine, if equipped. Disconnect fuel lines at rubber hose connections at left side of engine compartment.
- Raise vehicle. Remove engine front mount-to-cradle and mount-to-engine retaining nuts from right side of vehicle. Disconnect battery cables from engine. Remove starter.
- Remove transaxle inspection cover. On automatic transaxles, disconnect torque converter from flex plate. Remove crankshaft lower pulley and remove all belts. Disconnect exhaust pipe.
- Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolt from rear of engine. Disconnect power steering cut-off switch, if equipped.
- Lower vehicle. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Make note of ground stud location.
- Place support under transaxle rear extension. Install engine lift and remove engine.
- Disconnect battery cables at battery. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Disconnect vacuum lines from all non-engine mounted components. Disconnect T.V. cable and accelerator linkage at carburetor.
- Remove alternator. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect ground strap, from engine at engine forward strut. Disconnect radiator hoses from radiator. Remove heater hoses from engine.
- Remove fan blower motor. Remove fuel line. Remove gas tube at hood. Remove AIR pump and mounting bracket. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove power steering lines at steering gear. Remove exhaust pipe. Remove right front engine mount-to-cradle nuts.
- Disconnect battery cables at starter and transaxle housing. Remove converter housing inspection cover. Remove converter-to-flex plate bolts. Remove transaxle case-to-engine block support bracket bolts. Lower vehicle. Position support under transaxle rear extension.
- Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and swing rearward. Remove transaxle housing-to-engine bolts, noting location of ground stud bolt.
- If equipped, remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines connected. Install engine lift and remove engine.
- Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Disconnect battery and drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. If equipped, remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside, leaving refrigerant lines connected. Remove fan, pulleys and belts.
- Disconnect radiator and heater hoses at engine. Remove fan shroud assembly. On FWD models, remove cooler lines from radiator and remove radiator.
- On all models, remove power steering pump, if equipped, and position aside with hoses connected. Disconnect and plug fuel pump lines at pump. Disconnect battery ground cable from engine.
- Disconnect electrical wiring at engine. Disconnect all vacuum lines to non-engine mounted components. Disconnect accelerator cable at carburetor. Disconnect engine-to-body ground strap at engine. Remove alternator. Raise vehicle on hoist.
- Disconnect crossover pipe from exhaust manifold. Remove converter housing inspection cover. Remove converter-to-flex plate bolts.
- Remove wiring at starter motor. On FWD models, remove starter motor. Remove output shaft support bolts. Install final drive support chain. Remove final drive-to-engine support bracket.
- On all models remove transmission-to-engine mounting bolts. Remove front motor mount-to-frame bolts. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Install engine lift and remove engine.
- Drain cooling system. Remove drive belt and vacuum pump drive belt, if A/C equipped. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect negative battery cables at battery and ground wire at inner fender panel. Disconnect engine ground strap, from right cylinder head to cowl.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove flywheel cover and flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from rear exhaust manifold. Remove engine-to-transaxle brace. Remove engine mount-to-cradle retaining nuts.
- Disconnect all wiring from engine. Disconnect lower oil cooler line and cap opening. Remove power steering pump and bracket assembly and position aside, leaving hoses connected.
- Remove heater water return pipe. Disconnect glow plug leads at glow plugs. If equipped, remove A/C compressor and position aside with hoses connected.
- Disconnect fuel and vacuum lines from engine. Plug fuel lines. Disconnect accelerator and T.V. cables at injection pump and cable bracket. Position cables aside. Remove upper oil cooler line and plug opening. Remove exhaust crossover pipe heat shield.
- Disconnect transaxle filler tube and position aside. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove engine mounting strut and strut brackets. Install engine lift. Support transaxle rear extension with jack. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine.
- Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Cover air hole in intake manifold. Mark hood and hinges for reassembly reference. Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. Disconnect engine ground strap, from right cylinder head to cowl.
- Remove radiator hoses. Remove engine oil and transmission oil cooler lines. Disconnect vacuum hoses to engine. Remove power steering hoses.
- If equipped, remove A/C compressor from engine, and position aside with hoses and brackets attached. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump and injection pump.
- Disconnect all wiring attached to engine, except at starter. Disconnect accelerator cable. Disconnect detent cable from injection pump and engine brackets. Remove upper radiator support and remove radiator.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds. Remove torque converter cover. Remove torque converter-to-flywheel bolts. Remove starter. Remove motor mount through bolts. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on right side of engine.
- Lower vehicle. Install engine lift. Place a wood block on top of a jack and slightly raise transmission. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on left side and remove engine.
- Mark hood and hinges for reassembly reference. Remove hood. Disconnect battery cables at battery. Remove air cleaner and hot air pipe. Drain cooling system. Remove engine ground strap.
- Remove upper and lower radiator hoses at engine. Disconnect transmission cooler lines from radiator. Remove heater hoses at water pump and water control valve. Remove radiator fan and fan shroud. Remove radiator.
- Remove power steering pump bracket. DO NOT disconnect oil lines. Position pump aside. Remove A/C compressor bracket without disconnecting lines. Position compressor and brackets aside.
- Remove fuel feed and return line at fuel pump. Remove accelerator cable. Disconnect wiring and vacuum hoses from engine. Remove left-hand exhaust pipe from manifold. From left side, remove bolt and bracket holding final drive-to-engine.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove starter. Drain crankcase. Remove flywheel shield and flywheel-to-converter bolts. Disconnect right-hand exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove splash shield. Remove right transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Remove right output shaft support bolts. Remove front motor mount bolts. Install final drive support chain. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove final drive-to-engine bracket. Install engine lift and remove engine.
- Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and hot air pipe. Mark hood and hinges for reassembly reference. Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. Remove engine ground strap, from right cylinder head to cowl.
- Remove radiator hoses. Remove automatic transmission cooler lines from radiator. Remove all heater hoses and vacuum hoses connected to engine.
- Disconnect power steering pump with hoses attached. If equipped, remove A/C compressor and position aside with hoses and brackets attached.
- Disconnect fuel line at carburetor. Disconnect all wiring from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable from carburetor. Remove radiator. Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifold.
- Remove torque converter cover and bolts attaching converter-to-flywheel. Remove engine mount bolts or nuts. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on right side. Remove starter and secure to frame with wires attached.
- Lower vehicle. Install engine lift. Place a wood block on top of a jack and slightly raise transmission. Remove 3 transmission-to-engine bolts on left side. Remove engine.
- Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator support. Remove air cleaner. Cover air hole in intake manifold. Mark hood and hinges for reassembly. Remove hood.
- Disconnect engine ground strap. Remove fan and fan shroud. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses at engine. Disconnect transmission and engine oil cooler lines at radiator. Disconnect heater hoses from water pump and water control valve.
- Disconnect wiring to engine. Remove alternator with upper brace. Remove power steering pump bracket from engine. Position power steering pump aside. Remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside with hoses and brackets attached.
- Disconnect fuel lines to engine. Disconnect accelerator rod detent cable. Disconnect vacuum hoses from engine. Remove cooler line bracket. Disconnect left-hand exhaust pipe from manifold.
- Remove upper mount heat shield. Remove through bolt and bracket holding final drive-to-engine. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove splash shield. Remove right-hand exhaust pipe at manifold.
- Remove starter motor wiring and starter. Remove 3 converter-to-flywheel bolts. Partially lower vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right exhaust manifold. Remove oil filter adapter.
- Raise vehicle and remove 2 bolts supporting right-hand output shaft brackets. Remove right-hand transmission-to-engine bolts. Attach final drive support chain. Move engine oil cooler pipes rearward and remove radiator.
- Remove water control valve. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Install lift chains on engine and remove engine.
- Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Cover air hole in intake manifold. Mark hood and hinges for reassembly reference. Remove hood. Disconnect negative battery cables at batteries. Disconnect engine ground strap, from right head to cowl.
- Remove radiator hoses. Remove engine oil and transmission oil cooler lines. Remove heater hoses. Disconnect power steering hoses from steering gear. Remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside with hoses and brackets attached.
- Disconnect fuel line from fuel pump. Disconnect wiring to engine. Remove hairpin clip at bellcrank. Remove throttle and T.V. cables from intake manifold and position aside. Remove upper radiator support. Remove radiator.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds. Remove torque converter cover. Remove bolts attaching converter-to-flywheel. Remove motor mount bolts or nuts. Remove 3 bolts attaching transmission-to-engine on right side.
- Disconnect wires from starter and remove starter. Lower vehicle. Install engine lift. Place a wood block on top of a jack and slightly raise transmission. Remove 3 bolts attaching transmission-to-engine on left side. Remove engine.
