DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT - ENGINE ELECTRICAL

Begin the system diagnosis with the DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information

  1. The identification of the control modules which command the system.
  2. The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit.
  3. The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status.

The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 4 - Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
  2. 5 - The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.
  3. 6 - The presence of DTCs which begin with U indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.
  1. Did you perform the Battery Inspection/Test? If yes, go to step 2 . If no, go to «BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/charging-system/#charging-system__battery-testing-inspection) .
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, go to step 3 . If no, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in BODY CONTROL MODULES .
  3. The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode. Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the Class 2 Power Mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If yes, go to step 4 . If no, go to POWER MODE MISMATCH in BODY CONTROL MODULES .
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with each of the following modules on the class 2 serial data circuit: Body Control Module (BCM). Climate Control Panel (CCP). Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Memory Seat Module (MSM). Onstar (ONS). Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Does the scan tool communicate with any module on the class 2 serial data circuit? If yes, go to step 5 . If no, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in BODY CONTROL MODULES .
  5. Select the Display DTCs function for the BCM, CCP, IPC, MSM, ONS, and PCM. Record all of the displayed DTCs, the DTC status, and the module which set the DTC. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, go to step 6 . If no, go to «SYMPTOMS - ENGINE ELECTRICAL»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system__symptoms-engine-electrical) .
  6. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with U? If yes, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in BODY CONTROL MODULES . If no, go to step 7 .
  7. Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, B1652, B1656 or B1658? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) LIST in BODY CONTROL MODULES . If no, go to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/charging-system/#charging-system__diagnostic-trouble-code-definitions) .

SYMPTOMS - ENGINE ELECTRICAL

The following steps must be completed before using the symptom tables.

  1. Perform Diagnostic System Check - Engine Electrical before using the Symptom Tests in order to verify that all of the following are true: There are no DTCs set. The control modules can communicate via the serial data link.
  2. Review the system descriptions and operations in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to one of the following system operations: Battery System. Starting System. See «DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Charging System. See «DESCRIPTION & OPERATION»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/charging-system/#charging-system__description-operation) .

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the starting and charging systems.
  2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

Intermittents

Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions.

STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check for Engine Electrical? If yes, go to step 2 . If no, go to «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) .
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the engine crank? If yes, test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. If no, go to step 3 .
  3. Is the security indicator flashing? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - THEFT DETERRENT in THEFT DETERRENT . If no, go to step 4 .
  4. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the Crank parameter in the BCM data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Yes? If so, go to step 5 . If not, go to step 13 .
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the PCM data list. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Does the scan tool display Yes? If so, go to step 6 . If not, go to step 14 .
  6. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral. With a scan tool, observe the IMS parameter in the Transmission data list. Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral? If yes, go to step 7 . If no, go to RANGE SELECTOR DISPLAYS INCORRECT RANGE in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE - 4T65- E .
  7. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Do you hear the STARTER relay click? If yes, go to step 10 . If no, go to step 8 .
  8. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the STARTER relay. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STARTER relay coil and a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 9 . If no, go to step 23 .
  9. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STARTER relay coil and the control circuit of the STARTER relay. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 18 . If no, go to step 16 .
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the STARTER relay. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STARTER relay switch and a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 11 . If no, go to step 24 .
  11. Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STARTER relay switch and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit. Does the engine crank? If yes, go to step 18 . If no, go to step 12 .
  12. Does the fuse in the jumper open? If yes, go to step 25 . If no, go to step 15 .
  13. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the BCM harness connector. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the BCM and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 21 . If no, go to step 17 .
  14. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM harness connector. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the PCM and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 22 . If no, go to step 17 .
  15. Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a high resistance or open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 19 .
  16. Test the control circuit of the STARTER relay for an open or short to battery voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 22 .
  17. Test the crank voltage circuit of the BCM/PCM for a high resistance or open. Did you find and correct the condition. If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 20 .
  18. Inspect for poor connections at the STARTER relay. Test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 26 .
  19. Inspect for poor connections at the starter solenoid. Test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 27 .
  20. Inspect for poor connections at the ignition switch. Test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 28 .
  21. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the BCM. Test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 29 .
  22. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the PCM. Test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 31 . If no, go to step 30 .
  23. Repair an open or high resistance in the battery positive voltage circuit of the STARTER relay coil. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 31 .
  24. Repair the open or high resistance in the battery positive voltage circuit of the STARTER relay switch. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 31 .
  25. Repair the short to ground in the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 31 .
  26. Replace the STARTER relay. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 31 .
  27. Replace the Starter Motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT (L36)»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 31 .
  28. Replace the ignition switch. Refer to IGNITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT in STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 31 .
  29. Perform the set up procedures for the BCM. Replace the BCM. Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT in BODY CONTROL MODULES . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 31 .
  30. Perform the set up procedures for the PCM. Replace the PCM. For 2003, refer to «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removal-installation__powertrain-control-module) . For 2004, refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REPLACEMENT in ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.8 L in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 31 .
  31. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step 2 .

STARTER SOLENOID CLICKS, ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK

  1. Did you perform the Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check? If yes, go to step 2 . If no, go to «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) .
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position. Did the starter solenoid click? If yes, go to step 3 . If no, go to «STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system__starter-solenoid-does-not-click) .
  3. Inspect the engine and belt drive system for mechanical binding such as a seized engine or seized generator. Does the engine move freely? If yes, go to step 4 . If no, go to ENGINE WILL NOT CRANK - CRANKSHAFT WILL NOT ROTATE in ENGINE MECHANICAL - 3.8L .
  4. Test the battery positive cable between the battery and the starter solenoid for high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 5 .
  5. Test the ground circuit between the battery and the starter motor for a high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 6 .
  6. Inspect for poor connections at the starter. Test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 7 .
  7. Replace the starter. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT (L36)»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 8 .
  8. Operate the system for which the symptom occurred. Did you correct the condition? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step 2 .

ENGINE CRANKS SLOWLY

Inspect the following items

  1. Battery - Perform the Battery Inspection/Test. Refer to «BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/charging-system/#charging-system__battery-testing-inspection) .
  2. Wiring - Inspect the wiring for damage. Inspect all connections to the starter motor, the solenoid, the battery, and all ground connections. Test for intermittent conditions and poor connections in wiring system.
  3. Engine - Verify that the engine is not seized.

If the battery, the wiring, and the engine are functioning properly, and the engine continues to crank slowly, replace the starter motor. Refer to

Diagnostic Aids

Inspect the flywheel ring gear for damage or unusual wear.

Shim the starter as required.

In order to add pinion to ring gear clearance a full size shim must be used. Do not shim only one starter mounting bolt. There are 3 shims available in different shapes, for clearance, all are 1 mm (0.039 in) thick.

  1. Did you perform the Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check? If yes, go to step 2 . If no, go to «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) .
  2. Start the engine. Does the starter operate normally? If yes, test for intermittent and poor connections in wiring system. If no, go to step 3 .
  3. Start the engine while listening to the starter motor turn. Is there a loud "whoop?" It may sound like a siren if the engine is revved while the starter is engaged, after the engine starts, but while the starter is still held in the engaged position. If yes, go to step 6 . If no, go to step 4 .
  4. Do you hear a "rumble", a "growl", or, in some cases, a "knock" as the starter is coasting down to a stop after starting the engine? If yes, go to step 7 . If no, go to step 5 .
  5. This is often diagnosed as a starter drive gear hang-in or a weak solenoid. When the engine is cranked, do you hear a high-pitched whine after the engine cranks and starts normally? If yes, go to step 8 . If no, go to step 7 .
  6. Inspect the flywheel ring gear for the following: Chipped gear teeth. Missing gear teeth. Milled teeth. Is the flywheel bent, or does it have damaged teeth? If yes, go to step 9 . If no, go to step 10 .
  7. Remove the starter motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT (L36)»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Inspect the starter motor bushings and clutch gear. Does the clutch gear have chipped or milled teeth or worn bushings? If yes, go to step 10 . If no, go to step 9 .
  8. Shim the starter motor away from the flywheel by adding shims between the starter motor and the engine block one at a time. Flywheel runout may make this noise appear to be intermittent. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 11 .
  9. Replace the flywheel. Refer to ENGINE FLYWHEEL REPLACEMENT in ENGINE MECHANICAL - 3.8 L . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 11 .
  10. Replace the starter motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT (L36)»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/starter/#starting-system) . Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 11 .
  11. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step 3 .

Removal Procedure

Note. Tools Required: J-43244 Relay Puller Pliers.

  1. Remove the electrical center cover.
  2. Locate the relay. See «FUSES & CIRCUIT BREAKERS»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/fuses-circuit-breakers/#fuses-circuit-breakers). NOTE: Always note the orientation of the relay. Ensure that the electrical center is secure, as not to put added stress on the wires or terminals.
  3. Using the J-43244 position the tool on opposing corners of the relay. (Scheme 2) NOTE: Use J-43244 to pull the relay straight out from the electrical center terminals. The use of pliers or a flat bladed tool could damage the electrical center.
  4. Remove the relay from the electrical center.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the relay in the same position as removed.
  2. Install the electrical center cover.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the torque converter cover. For 2003, see «TORQUE CONVERTER COVER»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-removal-installation). For 2004, see TORQUE CONVERTER COVER REPLACEMENT in TRANSAXLE-4T65-E.
  4. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the starter. (Scheme 3)
  5. Disconnect the wire from the solenoid S terminal on the starter.
  6. Remove the 2 starter motor mounting bolts. (Scheme 4)
  7. Remove the starter motor.

  1. Install the starter motor. (Scheme 4) NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  2. Install the starter motor mounting bolts. Tighten the starter motor mounting bolts to 43 N.m (32 lb ft).
  3. Connect the battery positive cable to the starter. (Scheme 3) Tighten the battery positive cable to the starter nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  4. Connect the starter motor S terminal wire. Tighten the solenoid S terminal nut to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
  5. Install the torque converter cover. For 2003, see «TORQUE CONVERTER COVER»(/buick/park-avenue/ii-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-removal-installation). For 2004, see TORQUE CONVERTER COVER REPLACEMENT in TRANSAXLE-4T65-E.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Connect the battery negative cable. Tighten the battery cable nut to 6 N.m (53 lb in).

The PG-260G and PG-260L are non-repairable starter motors. They have pole pieces that are arranged around the armature. Both solenoid windings are energized. The pull-in winding circuit is completed to the ground through the starter motor. The windings work together magnetically to pull and hold in the plunger. The plunger moves the shift lever. This action causes the starter drive assembly to rotate on the armature shaft spline as it engages with the flywheel ring gear on the engine. Moving at the same time, the plunger also closes the solenoid switch contacts in the starter solenoid. Full battery voltage is applied directly to the starter motor and it cranks the engine.

As soon as the solenoid switch contacts close, current stops flowing thorough the pull-in winding because battery voltage is applied to both ends of the windings. The hold-in winding remains energized; its magnetic field is strong enough to hold the plunger, shift lever, starter drive assembly, and solenoid switch contacts in place to continue cranking the engine. When the engine starts, pinion overrun protects the armature from excessive speed until the switch is opened.

When the ignition switch is released from the START position, the START relay opens and battery voltage is removed from the starter solenoid S terminal. Current flows from the motor contacts through both windings to the ground at the end of the hold-in winding. However, the direction of the current flow through the pull-in winding is now opposite the direction of the current flow when the winding was first energized.

The magnetic fields of the pull-in and hold-in windings now oppose one another. This action of the windings, along with the help of the return spring, causes the starter drive assembly to disengage and the solenoid switch contacts to open simultaneously. As soon as the contacts open, the starter circuit is turned off.

Circuit Description

Moving the ignition switch to the START position sends a 12 V signal to the PCM Ignition Crank Sense. The PCM verifies that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. The PCM then grounds the control circuit of the START relay. When the START relay is energized it allows battery positive voltage to the starter solenoid S terminal.
