Begin the system diagnosis with the DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK-BODY REAR END . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information
- The identification of the control modules which command the system.
- The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit.
- The identification of any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and their status.
The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.
Test Description
The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table.
- 2 Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
- 3 The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.
- 4 The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.
- 6 At this point you have determined all DTCs applicable to the Body Rear End system. Refer to «SYMPTOMS-BODY REAR END»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) for further Body Rear End diagnosis. Any other codes displayed from the listed modules do not apply to Body Rear End and should be diagnosed in their applicable section.

- Perform the «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK-BODY REAR END»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) before using the Symptom Tables in order to verify that all of the following are true: There are no DTCs set. The control module(s) can communicate via the serial data link.
- Review the system description and operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to «LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DESCRIPTION & OPERATION (GENERAL)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end__luggage-compartment-description-operation-general) or «LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DESCRIPTION & OPERATION (AJAR INDICATOR)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end) .
Visual/Physical Inspection
- Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the rear compartment lid release. Refer to «CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end__checking-aftermarket-accessories) .
- Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
Intermittent
Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT AND POOR CONNECTIONS .
Symptom List
- «TRUNK RELEASE INOPERATIVE»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-rear-end)

CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES
Do not connect aftermarket accessories into the following circuits
- SIR circuits, all such circuits are indicated on circuit diagrams with the SIR symbol.
- OBD II circuits, all such circuits are indicated on circuit diagrams with the OBD II symbol.
Always check for aftermarket accessories (non-OEM) as the first step in diagnosing electrical problems. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the system to verify that these add-on accessories are not the cause of the problems.
Possible causes of vehicle problems related to aftermarket accessories include
- Power feeds connected to points other than the battery.
- Antenna location.
- Transceiver wiring located too close to vehicle electronic modules or wiring.
- Poor shielding or poor connectors on antenna feed line.
- Check for recent service bulletins detailing installation guidelines for aftermarket accessories.

LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DESCRIPTION & OPERATION (GENERAL)
The rear compartment release system consists of the following components
- Rear compartment lid release switch.
- TRK/REL relay.
- Rear compartment lid release actuator.
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
- Rear Integration Module (RIM).
- Drivers Door Module (DDM).
When the trunk release switch is pressed, the release switch grounds a switch input to the driver's window switch. The driver's window switch sends a signal to the drivers door module by a simple bus interface. The drivers door module sends a class 2 message to the rear integration module which grounds the control circuit of the trunk release relay in the rear fuse block for 1/2 second.
The trunk release relay is hot at all times through a 15 A fuse. When the trunk release relay is energized, the trunk release relay sends battery voltage to the trunk release actuator.
TRUNK AJAR - 24
The IPC illuminates the TRUNK AJAR - 24 indicator in the DIC when the Rear Integration Module (RIM) detects that the trunk is ajar or open (signal circuit is low). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the RIM requesting illumination. The IPC sends a class 2 message to the radio in order to activate an audible warning.
