DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT - ENTERTAINMENT
Begin the system diagnosis with the DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - RADIO/AUDIO SYSTEM . The Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information
- The identification of the control module(s) which command the system.
- The ability of the control module(s) to communicate through the serial data circuit.
- The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status.
The use of the Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
- 2 Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
- 4 The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.
- 5 The presence of DTCs which begin with a "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.

SCAN TOOL DATA DEFINITIONS
- 8-Digit GM Part Number The scan tool displays an 8-digit numeric number. The part number of the module.
- Antenna Signal The scan tool displays 0-300 dBuV.
- Auto Set The scan tool displays Active/Inactive. The scan tool displays Active when the Auto Set feature is active.
- Band Number The scan tool displays AM/FM1/FM2. The current band that the radio is in.
- Calibration ID The scan tool displays 0-9999. The number designating what calibrations the module contains.
- Cassette Cut Tape The scan tool displays 0-999. The number of cut tape errors the radio has recorded
- Cassette Load/Unload Errors The scan tool displays 0-999. The number of cassette loading and unloading errors the radio has recorded.
- Cassette Tight Tape The scan tool displays 0-999. The number of cassette tight tape errors the radio has recorded.
- CD Focus Errors The scan tool displays 0-999. The number of CD focus errors recorded.

- New VIN Counter The scan tool displays 0-9. The number of times a new VIN number has been set in the radio.
- Phone The scan tool displays Present or Not Present. The scan tool displays Present when the radio receives class 2 information from the phone module.
- Preset Control The scan tool displays a Preset 1-6 when the radio is on a preset station or Not A Preset when the radio is not on a preset.
- PROM ID The scan tool displays 0-9999. The identification number of the modules internal PROM.
- Serial Number The scan tool displays the 18 digit serial number of the module.
- Steering Wheel Controls The scan tool displays 0-999 counts. The signal in counts as received from the steering wheel controls.
- Theft Armed The scan tool displays Learned VIN/No VIN. The Scan tool displays Learned VIN when the theft mode has been turned ON by recognizing a valid VIN #.
- Theft Lock The scan tool displays Locked/Unlocked. The scan tool displays Unlocked when the radio receives the correct VIN number across class 2 lines.
- Total Cassette Hours The scan tool displays 0-999 hrs. The total number of hours the cassette player has been used.
- Total CD Hours The scan tool displays 0-999 hrs. The total number of hours the CD player has been used.
- Total Radio Hours The scan tool displays 0-999 hrs. The total number of hours the radio has been used.
- Year Module Built The scan tool displays a 1990-2020. The production year the module was manufactured.

Circuit Description
This DTC is generated by the module when an error occurs between the VIN as received over the class 2 communication circuit and the VIN as stored in the module memory. The only circuit required is the class 2 communications line.
Conditions For Running DTC
The DTC is run when the Radio changes from OFF to ON. This may be in response to the radio switch or the ignition ON signal.
Conditions For Setting DTC
This DTC is generated by the module when an error occurs between the VIN as received over the class 2 communication circuit and the VIN as stored in the module memory. This happens when the radio changes from OFF to ON.
Action Taken When DTC Sets
The radio does not function. The radio also displays as many characters of the word "CALIBRATE" as will fit in the radio display.
Conditions For Clearing MIL/DTC
Re-calibration with the correct calibrations for the vehicle and cycling the radio to OFF then to ON will clear the DTC if there is no damage to the radio.
Scheme 72
This DTC is generated by the module when the Theft Lock is activated. This occurs when the VIN as received over the class 2 communication circuit and the VIN as stored in the module memory do not match. This also occurs when no VIN is received over the class 2 circuit. The only circuit required is the class 2 communications line.
This test is run every 300 milliseconds.
This DTC is generated by the module when the VIN as received over the class 2 communication circuit and the VIN as stored in the module memory do not match. This also occurs if no VIN is received over the class 2 circuit. This DTC test runs when the radio changes from OFF to ON.
The radio does not function. The radio will display Locked-THEFTLOCK Active.
Re-calibration with the correct calibrations for the vehicle and cycling the radio to OFF then to ON will clear the DTC if there is no damage to the radio.
Scheme 73
The steering wheel controls are simple momentary contact switches that connect a series of resistors so that each switch selection corresponds to a fixed resistance value. The Dash Integration Module (DIM) determines which switch has been pressed by the voltage drop across the corresponding resistance value.
This test is run every 300 milliseconds.
The switch must be stuck, pressed, for at least 30 seconds.
The DIM will ignore the switch command.
The stuck switch condition must be corrected.
Diagnostic Aids
- The following may cause an intermittent: A bent terminal. A backed out terminal. A damaged terminal. Poor terminal tension. A chafed wire. A broken wire inside the insulation.
- When diagnosing for an intermittent short or an open, massage the wire harness while watching the test equipment for changes.
The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.
- 2 This step verifies that the steering wheel convenience switch is stuck. The convenience switches operate in the 123-247 count range. The value given is the normal condition that exists when no switch is activated.

Note. The following steps must be completed before using the symptom table.
- Perform the «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - RADIO/AUDIO SYSTEM»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system) before using the Symptom Tables in order to verify that all of the following are true: There are no DTCs set. The control module(s) can communicate via the serial data link.
- Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to «RADIO/AUDIO SYSTEM DESCRIPTION & OPERATION»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system__radioaudio-system-description-operation) .
Visual/Physical Inspection
- Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the Radio/Audio System. Refer to «CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system__checking-aftermarket-accessories) .
- Inspect for easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
Intermittent
Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT AND POOR CONNECTIONS .

CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES
Do not connect aftermarket accessories into the following circuits
- SIR circuits, all such circuits are indicated on circuit diagrams with the SIR symbol.
- OBD II circuits, all such circuits are indicated on circuit diagrams with the OBD II symbol.
Always check for aftermarket accessories (non-OEM) as the first step in diagnosing electrical problems. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the system to verify that these add-on accessories are not the cause of the problems.
Possible causes of vehicle problems related to aftermarket accessories include
- Power feeds connected to points other than the battery.
- Antenna location.
- Transceiver wiring located too close to vehicle electronic modules or wiring.
- Poor shielding or poor connectors on antenna feed line.
- Check for recent service bulletins detailing installation guidelines for aftermarket accessories.
AUDIO SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
Many conditions that affect radio operation may be corrected without removing the radio from the car. Verify the condition, and follow the diagnostic procedures in order to isolate and correct the condition. In order to properly diagnose any audio system problems, ensure that you have a fully charged battery.
Preliminary Inspections
Note. When testing the audio system for poor reception or noise, the vehicle should be outside away from metal buildings and utility lines, with the hood and rear compartment closed.
- Check for any aftermarket equipment that may have been installed on the vehicle. If aftermarket equipment is found disconnect it and check if the audio noise is still present. Inspect that the antenna connector and the antenna coaxial cable are clean and tight.
- For reception concerns, first determine if the customer is within the listening area of the stations they are attempting to receive.
- Stations at the lower end of the FM band are more susceptible to audio noises than stations at the higher end.
- If the noise is only from one speaker check for the following before speaker replacement: Isolate the noise using the J 39916-A. Inspect the speaker connections to ensure they are clean and tight. Refer to «TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT AND POOR CONNECTIONS»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/body-electrical/#testing-wiring-systems-for-intermittent-poor-connections) . Inspect for a loose or incorrectly installed speaker or surrounding trim. Loose trim can cause a buzz or flutter which sounds like a malfunctioning speaker.
- Ignition noise on the FM band may be an indication of an ignition system problem.
- Inspect that all vehicle grounds are clean, tight and free of corrosion.
- Inspect the rear defogger grid lines for large breaks or dark spots.
- Inspect the connections at the radio antenna module to ensure that they are clean and tight.
- Compare the customers vehicle to another of similar model and audio system to determine if the condition is abnormal.
Identifying Concerns
- In order to isolate the source of the noise/poor reception, identify the ignition switch position that the concern is most noticeable: Turn the ignition switch to the accessory position. Turn ON the radio. Seek up 88-108 FM then 550-1600 AM. Record the number of valid radio stations where the tuner stops. Repeat these steps with the ignition ON, and the engine OFF then again with the engine running.
- Return the ignition switch to the position that the concern was most noticeable.
- Remove fuses or circuit breakers one at a time until the noise has been eliminated.
- Identify what systems or components are powered by the fuse.
- Reinstall all fuses and circuit breakers.
- Disconnect the components powered by the fuse one at a time until the concern has been eliminated.
Corrective Action
- Inspect the ground integrity of the component or system causing the noise.
- Malfunctioning and marginal components such as relays and solenoids may cause noise and/or poor reception.
- Always use a braided ground strap when applying additional grounds and keep the ground strap as short as possible.
- If the noise source is found to be coming from the vehicle harness: Route the antenna cable separately from the wire harness that is emitting the noise. Use aluminum or nickel tape in order to shield the antenna cable. Attempt variations of the following repairs: Add only aluminum or nickel tape before adding a ground strap to the tape. Wrap a ground strap 360 degrees around the tape, securing the other end of the strap to chassis ground.
Note. When installing suppression devices, signal wires such as sensor and communication circuits should not be suppressed. Battery and ignition voltage circuits are the best choices for suppressing.
- Capacitors work best on switch pops and low frequency noise.
- Filters work best on high frequency whines and static.
- After adding any suppression device, inspect all of the vehicle systems for proper operation and function.
- Whenever possible, make a test harness that includes filters or capacitors. Always inspect the effectiveness and operation before permanent installation.
- If an audible pop is caused due to operating a switch, perform the following repairs as necessary: Add a capacitor across the contacts of the switch. Add a capacitor from the battery positive voltage (B+) side of the switch to chassis ground. Add a capacitor from the ground side of the switch to chassis ground.
- Use the following available noise suppression devices: 220 micro farad (50 V) capacitor GM P/N 1227895 - Works well for ignition system related noise. 0.47 micro farad capacitor GM P/N 1227894 - Works well for switches and relays. Feed through capacitor GM P/N 477371 - Works well for high current situations. Filter package GM P/N 1224205 - Works well for low current situations. Fuel pump suppressor GM P/N 25027405. 53.34 cm (21 in) braided ground strap GM P/N 8910791. 48.26 cm (19 in) braided ground strap GM P/N 6286800. 26.67 cm (10.5 in) braided ground strap GM P/N 6287160. 21.59 cm (8.5 in) braided ground strap GM P/N 12091511.
Generator Whine Concerns
- Inspect the ground terminal and cable for high resistance.
- Inspect the generator and brackets for loose or coated mounting bolts.
- Inspect that the ground straps between the engine and the frame are clean and tight.
- If the noise is still present, inspect the charging system for proper operation.
- Install a filter GM P/N 1224205 in the battery voltage feed circuit to the radio.
- If the noise is not eliminated, install the filter in each following variation: Install the filter with the single wire side toward the radio and the ground wire attached to chassis ground. Remove the ground to the filter. Reverse the filter so the 2-wire side is toward the radio with the ground wire attached to chassis ground. Remove the ground from the filter.
- If the filter GM P/N 1224205 causes a delay when turning the radio ON or OFF, or other problems, remove the filter and install a 0.47 micro farad capacitor to chassis ground.
- Before reassembling the vehicle, remove any unneeded filters.
- Test the functionality all of the vehicle systems for proper operation and function.

All Speakers Inoperative
Note. The following information lists the most probable cause of the concern to the least probable cause followed by the appropriate test for that condition. If the list leads to the replacement of a component, always inspect for a poor connection before proceeding with the replacement. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS .
- Speaker output shorted - Test all speaker outputs for a short.
- Defective radio - Replace the radio. Refer to «RADIO REPLACEMENT»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system) .
One Speaker Inoperative
Note. The following information lists the most probable cause of the concern to the least probable cause. If the list leads to the replacement of a component, always inspect for a poor connection before proceeding with replacement. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS .
- Speaker output open. Test the appropriate speaker output circuits for an open.
- No audio output from the radio. Test for any AC voltage between the appropriate speaker output circuits at the speaker harness connector, disconnected with the radio volume adjusted to an audible level. If AC voltage is present, replace the speaker. Refer to «SPEAKER REPLACEMENT REFERENCE»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system) . If no AC voltage is present, replace the radio. Refer to «RADIO REPLACEMENT»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system) .
Speaker(s) - Reduced Volume
Note. The following information lists the most probable cause of the concern to the least probable cause. If the list leads to the replacement of a component, always inspect for a poor connection before proceeding with replacement. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT & POOR CONNECTIONS .
- Speaker output circuit high resistance. Test the appropriate speaker output circuits for high resistance.
- Defective speaker - Replace the appropriate speaker. Refer to «SPEAKER REPLACEMENT REFERENCE»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system) .
RADIO SETUP
Complete the following procedure, using a scan tool, in order to properly set up communication
- At the Main Menu screen, select: Diagnostics.
- At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following options: Model Year Passenger Car
- At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body.
- At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the appropriate model.
- At the Body screen, select: Radio.
- At the Radio screen, select: Special Functions.
- At the Special Functions screen, select: Radio Setup.
- At the Radio Setup screen, press ENTER (The following test will set up a new or existing radio).
- Verify that the scan tool displays "Test in Progress".
- Verify that the scan tool displays "Test Completed Successfully".
- Press EXIT on the scan tool and cycle the ignition. NOTE: The radio set up will configure the following systems: Steering Wheel Controls LEARN VIN Diagnostic Trouble Codes Class 2 Radio Messages
Without learning the VIN, the radio will display a locked message (LOC).

Removal Procedure
- Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate. Refer to «TRIM PLATE BEZEL REPLACEMENT - IP CLUSTER»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gauges-console) .
- Depress the spring clip retainers at the sides of the radio.
- Pull the radio straight out in order to remove the radio.
- Disconnect the antenna coaxial cable from the radio.

Installation Procedure
- Connect the antenna coaxial cable to the radio.
- Install the radio into the instrument panel.
- Ensure that the spring clips are fully engaged.
- Install the instrument panel cluster trim plate. Refer to «TRIM PLATE BEZEL REPLACEMENT - IP CLUSTER»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gauges-console) .
CASSETTE PLAYER CARE & CLEANING
Note. Tools Required: Audio System Diagnostic Kit (J 39916-A).
If you do not regularly clean the tape player, the tape player is subject to the following conditions
- Reduced sound quality.
- Ruined cassettes.
- A damaged tape mechanism.
Cassette tapes may not operate properly if they are not stored in their cases away from the following conditions
- Contaminants.
- Direct sunlight.
- Extreme heat.
Cleaning Intervals
Clean the cassette tape player every 15 hours of operation for optimum performance.
Clean the cassette tape player at a maximum of every 50 hours of playing time. This will prevent damage to the cassette tape player mechanism. The radio may display CLN, CLEAN or CLEAN TAPE (depending on the family of radio being used), if equipped with the Clean Tape Indicator Feature. This indicates that you have used the tape player for 50 hours without resetting the tape clean timer. If this message appears on the display, clean the cassette tape player. The player will still play tapes, however the player should be cleaned as soon as possible in order to prevent damage to the tapes and/or the player.
Cassettes are subject to wear and the sound quality may degrade over time. If you notice a reduction in sound quality, play a different cassette. A new cassette will indicate whether the tape or the tape player is at fault.
If the sound quality does not improve when the second tape is played, clean the cassette player. Perform this step regardless of when you last cleaned the cassette player.
If a noticeable improvement is not achieved after cleaning the player, remove the radio assembly for repair.
Head & Capstan Cleaning
The following two components are cleaned on a tape player
- The head.
- The capstan.
Note. Do not contact the tape head with magnetized tools. If the head becomes magnetized, every cassette played in the player will be degraded.
In order to properly clean a tape player, the preferred method is to use the cleaning cassette in J 39916-A.
To prevent the cleaning cassette from being ejected, perform the following steps
- Turn the ignition switch to one of the following positions (depending on the vehicle line): ON RUN ACC ACCESSORY
- Turn the radio off.
- Press and hold the TAPE button for 5 seconds. The tape symbol on the display will flash for 2 seconds.
- Insert the scrubbing action cleaning cassette.
- Eject the cleaning cassette after the manufacturer's recommended cleaning time. When the cleaning cassette has been ejected, the Cut Tape Detection Feature is active again.
The alternative method is to use a non scrubbing action, wet type cleaning cassette. This cassette uses a fabric belt in order to clean the tape head. This type of cleaning cassette will not eject on its own. A non scrubbing action cassette may not clean as thoroughly as the scrubbing type cleaning cassette. The use of this cassette is not recommended.
After you clean the player, press and hold the EJECT button for 5 seconds in order to reset the CLEAN indicator. The radio will display-in order to show that the indicator has been reset.
- Lower the rear of the headliner far enough to access the antenna module. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT (WITHOUT SUNROOF)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT (WITH SUNROOF)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the radio antenna module.
- Remove the fastener securing the radio antenna module to the roof beam.
- Remove the radio antenna module.
Scheme 81
- Install the radio antenna module to the roof beam, ensuring that the alignment tab is properly located. CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the antenna module fastener. Tighten the fastener to 9 N.m (80 in lbs).
- Connect the electrical connectors to the radio antenna module.
- Install the headliner. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT (WITHOUT SUNROOF)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT (WITH SUNROOF)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
- Remove the radio. Refer to «RADIO REPLACEMENT»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/entertainment-systems/#entertainment-system) .
- Disconnect the antenna extension cable.
- Remove the right side windshield garnish molding. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - WINDSHIELD PILLAR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
- Remove the upper instrument panel trim pad. Refer to «TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT-IP UPPER (W/O HUD)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gauges-console) or «TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT-IP UPPER (WITH HUD)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gauges-console) .
- Remove the cable clips (1) from the instrument panel support.
- Disconnect the coaxial cable connector (2).
- Remove the antenna extension cable from the vehicle.

- Install the cable clips (1) to the instrument panel support.
- Insert the antenna extension cable through the opening in the radio cavity.
- Connect the antenna extension cable to the radio.

- Install the upper instrument panel trim pad. - Remove the right side windshield garnish molding. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - WINDSHIELD PILLAR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
- Remove the center pillar trim panel. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - CENTER PILLAR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__garnish-molding-replacement-center-pillar) .
- Remove the right rear upper quarter trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - REAR QUARTER UPPER»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__trim-panel-replacement-rear-quarter) .
- Remove the upper instrument panel trim pad. Refer to «TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - IP UPPER (W/O HUD)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gauges-console) or «TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - IP UPPER (WITH HUD)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-gauges-console) .
- Lower the headliner in order to gain access to the coaxial cable harness along the right side of the vehicle. Refer to «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT (WITHOUT SUNROOF)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) or «HEADLINER REPLACEMENT (WITH SUNROOF)»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
- Disconnect the coaxial cable connector (2).
- Disconnect the ground cable (1) from the roof beam.
- Disconnect the antenna connection (2) at the windshield.
- Disconnect the coaxial cable from the antenna module located on the rear roof beam.
- Disconnect the power lead connection (2).
- Remove the rosebud clips (3) from the roof beams.
- Remove the coaxial cable harness from the vehicle.
- Install the coaxial cable harness to the roof beams with the rosebud clips (3). (Scheme 86)
- Connect the power lead connector (2).
- Install the coaxial cable connections to the antenna module. (Scheme 85)
- Install the antenna connection (2) at the windshield. (Scheme 84)
- Connect the ground connector (1) to the roof beam.
- Connect the coaxial cable connector (2). (Scheme 83)
- Install the upper instrument panel trim pad. - Install the center pillar trim panel. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - CENTER PILLAR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__garnish-molding-replacement-center-pillar).
- Install the right side windshield garnish molding. Refer to «GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - WINDSHIELD PILLAR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim).
- Remove the door trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - SIDE FRONT DOOR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system__trim-panel-replacement-side-front) in Doors.
- Disconnect the speaker electrical connector.
- Remove the speaker fasteners.
- Remove the speaker.

- Install the speaker into the door with the electrical connector facing upward. CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the speaker fasteners. Tighten the speaker fasteners to 1.8 N.m (16 in lbs).
- Connect the electrical connector.
- Install the door trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - SIDE FRONT DOOR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system__trim-panel-replacement-side-front) in Doors.
- Remove the upper door trim panel. Refer to «TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - SIDE FRONT DOOR»(/buick/lesabre/viii-2000-2005/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#door-system-mirror-system-window-system__trim-panel-replacement-side-front) in Doors.
- Disconnect the upper door speaker electrical connector from the door harness.
- Remove the upper door speaker/grille assembly by gently prying the assembly from the upper door trim panel.

- Install the upper door speaker/grille assembly into the upper door trim panel.
- Ensure that the speaker grille is properly seated in the upper door trim panel.
- Connect the upper door speaker electrical connector.

- Disconnect the speaker electrical connectors (1).

- Remove the speaker fasteners.
- Remove the rear speakers.

Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. - Install the fasteners. Tighten the fasteners to 2 N.m (18 in lbs).

RADIO/AUDIO SYSTEM DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The Entertainment System on this vehicle is configured with either a base or an uplevel system. Both the base and uplevel systems contain a radio, antenna, speakers.

Radio Signal
The radio signal is sent from a broadcast station and is then received by an antenna. The strength of the signal received depends on the following
- The power output (wattage) of the broadcasting station.
- The location of the vehicle (or receiver) relative to the broadcast tower.
- Obstacles between the tower and the receiver.
- Atmospheric conditions.
- What band (AM or FM) the station is broadcasting.
- Type of antenna and the ground plane.
AM Reception
The AM band has a lower frequency range than the FM band. These longer wavelengths
- Bend around obstacles.
- Follow the curvature of the earth.
- May reflect off the ionosphere (skip).
The AM frequencies have longer range due to the ground wave. The ground wave follows the curvature of the earth and is effected by its conductivity. Greater conductivity equates to less signal loss thus transmission over water is better than over land. The AM band has a range of 80-320 km (50-200 mi).
FM Reception
The shorter wavelengths of the higher frequency FM band
- Reflect off obstacles.
- Are absorbed by the ground.
- Penetrate the ionosphere.
Broadcasts in the FM band are limited to "line of sight" reception which is typically 40 km (25 mi). Even when out of a direct line of sight, the signal may be reflected into areas that would be in a "shadow" otherwise. Factors which affect the line of sight include
- Height of the broadcast antenna.
- Height of the receiving antenna.
- Terrain and buildings in the broadcast path.
Diversity Antenna System
The diversity antenna system uses both front and back windows with an integral antenna built between the glass layers of the windshield and as an applique to the rear glass. Any damage to the antenna requires replacing the glass.
A diversity antenna system is designed to deliver the best radio signal reception possible. Two antennas are used to form a diversity system. The primary antenna is pan of the rear window and looks similar to the defogger grid. This antenna receives both AM an FM signals. The secondary antenna is part of the front windshield and receives only FM signals.
The antenna reception signals are sorted out by the radio antenna module. The radio antenna module is enabled when the radio is turned on. When the AM or FM band is selected on the radio, the antenna module connects the rear window antenna directly to the radio. In addition, when the FM band is selected an enable signal is sent to the antenna module. Superimposed on this enable signal is the strength of the signal being received by the radio tuner. The antenna module now performs two functions. It switches between the front and rear antennas, monitoring the radio signal strength and combines both signals and phase aligns them to create one strong signal.
Theft Deterrent
The "Theftlock" theft deterrent system is a feature on all base and uplevel radios. There is no need to program a security code into the radio as in past model years. The theft deterrent system now utilizes class 2 serial data to determine if the radio is in the appropriate vehicle. Each time the radio receives the "run" power mode message, it compares the VIN information it has stored to the VIN information received from a module on the class 2 serial data circuit responsible for transmitting that information. If a mis-match occurs, the radio display will indicate to the user the radio is locked. Once this takes place, a DTC will set, the radio will not respond to any button presses and become inoperative. The two scenarios able to cause this condition are
- A radio is installed from another vehicle.
- A module which communicates on the class 2 serial data circuit which supplies VIN information to the radio is replaced and not properly setup with the correct VIN information for that vehicle.
The only way to unlock the radio is by using a scan tool. Always refer to the table in this section to diagnose the "Theftlock" DTC for further information.
Steering Wheel Controls
Some audio functions are available using the steering wheel controls. The steering wheel controls consist of multiple momentary contact switches that connect a series of resistors. When a steering wheel control button is pressed, a specific resistance value is noted by the DIM. This results in a generated voltage, unique to the particular button. The DIM alerts the radio that the button has been pressed, and the radio responds, just as if the corresponding radio front panel button had been pressed.
Tape/CD Player Error Messages
The radio displays an error when any of the following occurs.
- The radio will display error codes for the tape player and integral CD player.
- The radio will display the following tape player error codes for tight tape, broken tape, and wrapped tape. If these conditions are detected, the radio will switch to the radio mode and eject the tape. The error code will be displayed for 5 seconds, followed by the tuner display, then the default. E10-Tight tape. E11-Broken tape. E13-Communication problem. E14-Wrapped tape.
- The radio will display the following integral CD player error codes. If one of these problems is detected, the unit will switch to the radio mode and eject the CD. The display will show TOD, if the unit is off, or display the radio frequency for 5 seconds, then the default, if the unit is on. E20-Optics focus error, may be due to moisture. E21-Optics loss of tracking control, maybe due to blemishes on disc. E22-Load/Unload motor problem. E23-Communication problem.
