DESCRIPTION
One mirror control switch adjusts both left (driver side) and right (passenger side) mirrors. Rotate mirror select switch left (counterclockwise) or right (clockwise) to select mirror and joystick to adjust mirror. Heated mirrors are included with power mirrors. Heating elements are not functional unless vehicle is also equipped with electric rear window defogger.
Each power mirror assembly contains 2 reversible motors: an up/down motor and a left/right motor. Mirror control switch reverses polarity of motor circuit to change direction of mirror movement. Each motor contains a self-resetting circuit breaker, which opens when mirror reaches its mechanical limit of travel. On vehicles with memory seat/mirror systems, each power mirror assembly contains potentiometers that are used to determine mirror position.
TESTING
Note. Testing information for models not listed is not available. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
Note. Power mirror system voltage is controlled by the Retained Accessory Power (RAP) system and ignition switch in RUN or ACC position. RAP system will supply voltage after engine is turned off and key is removed from ignition. Voltage is supplied for approximately 10 minutes after ignition is turned off or for 35 seconds after a door is opened and closed. Voltage is also supplied whenever a door is left opened. Ensure RAP system is operating properly.
Note. Before performing following tests, ensure circuit ground, circuit harness wiring and circuit fuse are okay. Also, ensure all circuit connections are clean and tight.
BOTH MIRRORS DO NOT OPERATE
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect mirror control switch connector. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connector Orange wire terminal to ground. If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, check fuse No. 6A (15-amp). Replace fuse if necessary. If fuse is okay, check Orange wire between mirror control switch and fuse block for an open or short to ground.
- Using test light, backprobe mirror control switch connector Orange wire terminal and Black wire terminal. If test light does not come on, check Black wire for an open and/or poor connections. If test light comes on, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, replace mirror control switch.
Eight)
- If left mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in left position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe mirror control switch connector between terminals "C" (Light Blue wire) and "D" (Yellow wire). Toggle mirror position switch to up and down positions and measure voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to step 3). If battery voltage does not exist, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, check Light Blue wire and/or Yellow wire for a short to ground. If circuits are okay, replace mirror control switch.
- If right mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in right position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe mirror control switch connector between terminals "E" (Brown/White wire) and "F" (Gray wire). Toggle mirror position switch to up and down positions and measure voltage. If battery voltage exists, go to step 4). If battery voltage does not exist, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, check Brown/White wire and/or Gray wire for a short to ground. If circuits are okay, replace mirror control switch.
- Place mirror select switch in left position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe mirror control switch connector between terminals "B" (White wire) and "C" (Light Blue wire). Toggle mirror position switch to left and right positions and measure voltage. If battery voltage exists, go to step 5). If battery voltage does not exist, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, check White wire for a short to ground. If circuit is okay, replace mirror control switch.
- Place mirror select switch in right position. Using a voltmeter, backprobe mirror control switch connector between terminals "F" (Gray wire) and "G" (Red/White wire). Toggle mirror position switch to left and right positions and measure voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to step 6). If battery voltage does not exist, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, check Red/White wire for a short to ground. If circuit is okay, replace mirror control switch.
- Check outside mirror connector. If connector is okay, check White wire, Light Blue wire and Yellow wire for an open. If circuits are okay, replace left outside mirror drive unit.
- Check outside mirror connector. If connector is okay, check Red/White wire, Gray wire and Brown/White wire for an open. If circuits are okay, replace right outside mirror drive unit.
Park Avenue Without Memory Seat/Mirrors & LeSabre
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect mirror control switch connector. Check for continuity between mirror switch connector terminals. See «PARK AVENUE & LESABRE CONTROL SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST»(/buick/lesabre/vii-1992-1999/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) table. See «PARK AVENUE & LESABRE MIRROR CONNECTOR WIRE COLORS»(/buick/lesabre/vii-1992-1999/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) table. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/lesabre/vii-1992-1999/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) . If continuity does not exist, replace mirror control switch. If continuity exists, go to next step. - Connect mirror control switch connector. Disconnect suspect outside mirror 8-pin Black connector. Place mirror control switch in suspect outside mirror position (left or right). Using test light, backprobe suspect mirror connector terminals "A" and "C". See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Place mirror position switch in up or down positions. If test light comes on in both positions, go to next step. If test light does not come on in either or both positions, check suspect circuit for an open or short to ground. Check mirror control switch connector. If circuits and connection are okay, replace suspect outside mirror.
- Place mirror control switch in suspect outside mirror position (left or right). Using test light, backprobe suspect mirror connector terminals "F" and "H". See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/lesabre/vii-1992-1999/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) . Place mirror position switch in left or right positions. If test light comes on in both positions, check outside mirror connector(s) inside door(s). If test light does not come on in either or both positions, check suspect circuit for an open or short to ground. Check mirror control switch connector. If circuits and connection are okay, replace suspect outside mirror.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
| CAUTION | On some models, momentary actuation of power window switch can cause window to move directly to fully open position. When working inside door, leave ignition off whenever possible. |
Insert flat tool between switch plate and trim panel, and disengage spring clip. If switch plate is attached to trim panel with screws, remove screws. Disconnect outside mirror control switch electrical connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal
Disconnect negative battery cable. Pull mirror and backing plate assembly out of mirror housing. (Scheme 1) Remove jack screws from mirror backing plate. If equipped with left outside mirror defogger, cut wires at splice location.
Installation
If equipped with left outside mirror defogger, splice wires together at splice location. Snap jack screws into NEW mirror backing plate. Align jack screws to drive unit, and align drive unit swivel to pivot points on mirror backing plate. Push mirror and backing plate assembly into housing until assembly clicks into place.
