Diagnostic Starting Point - Vehicle
Begin the system diagnosis with Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle . The Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle will provide the following information
- The identification of the control modules which are not communicating through the serial data circuit.
- The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status.
The use of the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle will identify the correct procedures to begin vehicle diagnosis. These must be performed before system DTC or symptom diagnosis.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
- 1: This step ensures that the battery and the vehicle primary power and ground systems are functioning correctly.
- 3: Lack of communication may be due to a particular malfunction of a serial data circuit. The information in Data Link References will provide a list of modules and the associated data network no communication diagnostic link.
- 4: A module that is operating in the incorrect power mode based on key position may cause other vehicle symptoms and/or DTCs to set. The information in Power Mode Mismatch will correct the condition before checking for module DTCs or symptoms.
- 8: This step ensures that all data link communication DTCs are diagnosed before system level DTCs.
- 9: This step ensures that all electronic control unit (ECU) internal DTCs are diagnosed before other system level DTCs.
- 10: This step ensures that all device voltage DTCs are diagnosed before other system level DTCs.

| 4 | IMPORTANT: To ensure that retained accessory power (RAP) mode is inactive, if equipped, open the driver door during the following step. The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the crank power mode. Access the Power Mode parameter on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch, operate the ignition mode switch, through all positions while observing the Power Mode parameter. Refer to Body Control System Description and Operation for a list of the power mode states that correspond with each switch position. Diagnostic Repair Verification
- Install any components or connectors that have been removed or replaced during diagnosis.
- Perform any adjustment, programming or setup procedures that are required when a component or module is removed or replaced.
- Clear the DTCs.
- Turn OFF the ignition for 60 seconds.
- If the repair was related to a DTC, duplicate the Conditions for Running the DTC and use the Freeze Frame/Failure Records, if applicable, in order to verify the DTC does not reset. If the DTC resets or another DTC is present, refer to the «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle»(/buick/lacrosse/i-2004-2009/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-dtc-information__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-list) and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure. Or If the repair was symptom related, duplicate the conditions under which the customer concern occurred to verify the repair. If the customer concern reoccurs, return to «Symptoms - Vehicle»(/buick/lacrosse/i-2004-2009/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-dtc-information) and perform the appropriate symptom diagnostic.
