Removal & Installation - A/t Buick Electra VI

Removal (Calais, Cavalier, Cimarron, Corsica, Firenza, Grand Am, Somerset, Skyhawk, Skylark & Sunbird)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner and T.V. cables from throttle lever and transaxle. Remove airflow meter and intake duct (if equipped). Remove shift linkage and wiring routing clips and straps. On Cavalier or Corsica with V6, remove exhaust crossover bolts at right side manifold, and left side exhaust manifold bolts at cylinder head. Raise and support manifold/crossover assembly.
2. On all models, remove dipstick tube and install Engine Holding Fixture (J-28467). On Calais, Cimarron, Firenza, Grand Am, Skyhawk and Sunbird equipped with 125C transaxle, insert a 1/4" x 2" bolt in hole at front right motor mount to maintain driveline alignment. On all models, remove nut securing wiring harness to transaxle.
3. Remove wiring connectors from transaxle. Disconnect shifter linkage. Remove top 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts and left upper transaxle bracket and mount. Remove rubber hose from transaxle to vent pipe. Remove remaining upper engine-to-transaxle bolts.
4. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove front wheels. Drain transaxle. Remove shift linkage and bracket from transaxle. Remove lower ball joints from control arms. Install Axle Boot Protectors (J-34754). Remove and support axles. Remove transaxle mounting strut. Remove left stabilizer bar link pin bolt and left stabilizer bar frame bushing clamp nuts.
5. Remove left frame support assembly. Remove header pipe at exhaust manifold (if equipped with 2.0L). Remove header pipe and front exhaust manifold (if equipped with 2.8L). Remove speedometer cable and starter motor. Remove torque converter cover. Mark position of flexplate and torque converter. Remove flexplate bolts.
6. Remove oil cooling lines. Remove transaxle-to-engine support bracket. Position jack under transaxle. Remove remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts. Slide transaxle from engine and lower from vehicle.

Installation (Calais, Cavalier, Cimarron, Corsica, Firenza, Grand Am, Somerset, Skyhawk, Skylark & Sunbird)

To install, reverse removal procedure. As transaxle is being installed, guide right axle shaft into transaxle. Adjust T.V. and shift cables. Refill transaxle to proper fluid level.

Removal (Bonneville, 88, DeVille, Eldorado, Electra, Fleetwood, LeSabre, 98, Riviera, Seville & Toronado)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On DeVille, Eldorado, Fleetwood and Seville, remove air cleaner, air injection crossover pipe, air management valve and exhaust crossover pipe. On all others, remove airflow meter.
2. Remove T.V. cable at throttle body and transaxle. Remove shift linkage and vacuum modulator line. Remove neutral start, cruise control and vehicle speed sensor wiring. Remove 3 upper transaxle mounting bolts.
3. Install Engine Support (J-28467) and raise engine to unload engine mounts. On Eldorado, Toronado and Seville, remove driveline damper and engine mount. On all vehicles, raise on a hoist and remove front wheels.
4. Remove both lower ball joints from steering knuckle. Install Axle Boot Protectors (J-34754). Using Drive Axle Remover (J-33008), remove both drive axles from transaxle. Tie drive axles out of way. NOTE: If necessary, raise left side of engine 2" to remove left engine mount and left cradle attaching bolts. Ensure engine is lowered back to original position.
5. Remove stabilizer linkage at left side. Remove left splash shield, vacuum pump (if equipped), and all wiring and hoses. Remove all transaxle-to-cradle, and engine-to-left cradle assembly mounting bolts. Support left cradle assembly. Remove right and left cradle attaching bolts and remove left cradle assembly.
6. Remove oil cooler lines and converter dust cover. Position jack under transaxle. Remove torque converter bolts. Remove remaining transaxle mounting bolts and remove from vehicle.

Note. Locate 1 bolt connecting transaxle-to-engine installed from the opposite direction. On some models, a 3 FOOT socket extension placed through the right wheelhousing will help remove this bolt.

Installation (Bonneville, 88, DeVille, Eldorado, Electra, Fleetwood, LeSabre, 98, Riviera, Seville & Toronado)

To install, reverse removal procedure. As transaxle is being installed, guide right axle shaft into transaxle. Adjust T.V. and shift cables. Refill transaxle to proper fluid level.

Removal (Celebrity, Century, Ciera & 6000)

Note. Anytime the cradle assembly is removed or lowered from vehicle, the rack and pinion steering assembly must be properly disconnected from the cradle. The rack and pinion steering assembly must then be supported in a manner in which it is not allowed to "hang" by the intermediate shaft. Failure to do so will damage the intermediate shaft.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner, wiring and cable routing clips and straps. Remove bolt securing T.V. cable to transaxle. Install Engine Support (J-28467). Raise vehicle on a hoist. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove strut shock bracket bolts from transaxle. Remove oil cooling lines from strut bracket and transaxle.
2. On models equipped with THM 440-T4 transaxle, remove left front wheel. Remove left front lower ball joint from steering knuckle. Remove brake line bracket at strut. Remove stabilizer bolts from frame and control arm.
3. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts leaving bolt near starter loosely installed. Remove speedometer cable at upper and lower couplings. Remove shifter linkage retaining clip, washer and bracket from transaxle.
4. Remove front and left sections of cradle. Install Axle Boot Protectors (J-34754). Position Axle Shaft Remover (J-33008) and Slide Hammer (J-2619-01) behind axle shaft cones and pull cones away from transaxle.
5. Rotate strut so axle shaft is out of way. Remove starter motor and converter shields. Mark torque converter and remove flexplate bolts. Remove 2 transaxle extension bolts from engine-to-transaxle. Remove rear transaxle mount bracket. It may be necessary to raise transaxle to remove bracket.
6. Support transaxle with a jack. Remove 2 braces to right end of transaxle bolts. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolt (located near starter). Slide transaxle from engine, toward driver's side. Lower transaxle from vehicle.

Installation (Celebrity, Century, Ciera & 6000)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust T.V. cable and shift cable. Refill transaxle to proper level with fluid.

Removal (Fiero)

1. Remove air cleaner and negative battery cable. Remove ground strap, shift cable and T.V. cable at transaxle. Remove electrical connectors. Remove upper transaxle bolts. Install Engine Support Fixture (J-28467). NOTE: Remove neutral start switch connector in a straight horizontal movement. DO NOT rock or tip connector when removing.
2. Raise vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove both axle shafts. Remove catalytic converter heat shield. Remove header pipe at manifold. Remove cradle nuts to engine and transaxle. Support cradle. Remove remaining nuts and lower cradle out of way.
3. Remove oil cooling lines. Remove starter shield and starter. Mark position of flexplate and torque converter. Remove flexplate nuts. Position jack under transaxle. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Lower transaxle from vehicle.

Installation (Fiero)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust T.V. cable and shift cable. Refill transaxle to proper level with fluid.

Note. In the following table, the letter "J" refers to Cavalier, Cimarron, Firenza, Skyhawk and Sunbird. The letter "N" refers to Calais, Grand Am, Somerset and Skylark.
