Electra, Lesabre, & Regal
Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove the flywheel access cover and crossover pipe. Disconnect engine mounts. Raise and support engine. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.
Riviera
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove upper final drive bolt and support engine. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect idler arm at frame.
- Lock steering against left-turn stop. Remove final drive unit, splash shield, starter and flywheel access cover. Drain crankcase, remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.
All Models Except Electra
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain crankcase, position steering gear stub-shaft clamp bolt upward and remove clamp bolt. Disconnect intermediate shaft from stub shaft. CAUTION: Failure to disconnect intermediate shaft from stub shaft may result in damage to steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. Damage to these parts can cause loss of steering.
- Install Engine Support Fixture (J-28467). Raise and support vehicle. Remove left side and loosen right side steering gear-to-cradle bolts.
- Remove front stabilizer bar. Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill through spot weld located between rear holes at left front stabilizer bar mounting point. Remove cradle mount nuts from engine and transaxle.
- Disconnect lower left ball joint from knuckle and discard ball joint-to-knuckle bolt. With block of wood between transaxle pan and jack, raise transaxle until mount studs clear cradle. Remove bolts attaching front crossmember to right side of cradle.
- Remove bolts from left side body mounts. Carefully using a pry bar, lower the rear crossmember below the left crossmember and remove left and front crossmember assembly. Remove flywheel cover and starter. Remove engine mount bracket. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.
Electra
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Drain crankcase oil. Install Engine Support Fixture (J-28467). (Scheme 13) Raise and support vehicle. Remove left front tire, remove left side lower control arm-to-frame bolts.
- Remove left side stabilizer bar link, move left lower control arm out of way. Remove engine splash shield, engine mount-to-frame nuts and front transaxle-to-frame nuts. Using Engine Support Fixture (J-29467), raise transaxle until transaxle mount clears studs on frame. Disconnect wiring harness from front frame crossmember.
- Remove bolts retaining front cross member to right side of frame. Remove left side body mounts, remove left and front crossmember assembly. Remove flywheel cover and starter assembly. Remove engine mount bracket and engine absorber assembly. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

V6 - 4.3L (262") VIN "V" (DIESEL) OIL PAN
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Drain crankcase oil. Remove dipstick, upper radiator support and fan shroud. Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove flywheel access cover, remove exhaust and crossover pipes.
- Remove oil cooler lines at filter adapter, remove starter. Install Engine Support Fixture (BT-6501). (Scheme 14) Raise engine and remove mounts from engine block. Remove oil pan bolts, remove oil pan.
All Models Except Riviera
- Disconnect negative battery cable and oil level indicator. Remove fan shroud screws. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove flywheel access cover. Disconnect exhaust and crossover pipes.
- Remove starter and disconnect engine mounts at cylinder block. Install Engine Support tool (BT-6501) with Adapters (BT-7109 & BT-7203) as shown in Fig. (Scheme 14). Raise engine and remove pan bolts and oil pan.
General Motors Engine Support Tool. Scheme 14
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove top and 2 left final drive-to-transmission bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Remove both front wheels. Using tool (J-24319-1), disconnect intermediate rod.
- Disconnect drive axles from output shafts. Remove battery cable bracket. Install Engine Support tool (BT-6501). Disconnect right output shaft support and remove remaining final drive bolts.
- Remove the splash shield and deflector. Remove final drive upper support bracket bolts. Disconnect steering damper at bracket. Position intermediate rod forward and pitman arm to the left.
- Place drain pan under transmission and jack under final drive. Remove final drive with right output shaft. Remove starter and drain crankcase. Remove oil pan bolts and remove pan.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and oil level indicator. Remove oil pump drive, vacuum pump, upper radiator support and fan shroud screws. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove flywheel access cover.
