Mirrors - Power Buick Century V

Mirrors 2 illustrations ~1227 words

DESCRIPTION

One mirror control switch adjusts both left (driver side) and right (passenger side) mirrors. Rotate mirror select switch left (counterclockwise) or right (clockwise) to select mirror and joystick to adjust mirror. Heated mirrors are included with power mirrors. Heating elements are not functional unless vehicle is also equipped with electric rear window defogger.

Each power mirror assembly contains 2 reversible motors: an up/down motor and a left/right motor. Mirror control switch reverses polarity of motor circuit to change direction of mirror movement. Each motor contains a self-resetting circuit breaker, which opens when mirror reaches its mechanical limit of travel. On vehicles with memory seat/mirror systems, each power mirror assembly contains potentiometers that are used to determine mirror position.

TESTING

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Note. Before performing following tests, ensure circuit ground, circuit harness wiring and circuit fuse are okay. Also, ensure all circuit connections are clean and tight.

BOTH MIRRORS DO NOT OPERATE

  1. Disconnect mirror control switch connector. Connect test light between Orange wire terminal of mirror control switch connector and ground.
  2. If test light does not come on, check Orange wire for an open or short to ground. If test light comes on, connect test light between Orange wire terminal and Black wire terminal of mirror control switch connector.
  3. If test light does not come on, check Black wire circuit for an open. If test light comes on, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, replace mirror control switch.

ONE MIRROR DOES NOT OPERATE IN UP/DOWN OR LEFT/RIGHT POSITION

  1. If left mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in left position. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connected connector, between terminals "C" and "D". See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/century/v-1982-1996/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) . Toggle mirror position switch to up position, and go to step 3).
  2. If right mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in right position. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connected connector, between terminals "E" and "F". See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/century/v-1982-1996/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) . Toggle mirror position switch to up position, and go to next step.
  3. If test light does not come on, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, replace mirror control switch. If test light comes on, backprobe suspect outside mirror connector between terminals "C" and "D". See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/century/v-1982-1996/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) . Toggle mirror position switch to up position. If test light does not come on, go to next step. If test light comes on, check suspect outside mirror connector. If connector is okay, replace suspect outside mirror drive unit.
  4. If test light does not come on, repair open in circuit between suspect outside mirror connector terminal "A" and mirror control switch connector terminal "C" on left mirror and terminal "F" on right mirror.

ONE MIRROR DOES NOT OPERATE IN UP/DOWN POSITIONS

(LEFT/RIGHT POSITIONS OPERATE NORMALLY)

  1. If left mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in left position. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connected connector, between terminal "C" (Light Blue wire) Toggle mirror position switch to up position, and go to step 3).
  2. If right mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in right position. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connected connector, between terminals "E" (Yellow wire) and "F" (Light Blue wire). Toggle mirror position switch to up position, and go to next step.
  3. If test light does not come on, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, replace mirror control switch. If test light comes on, backprobe suspect outside mirror connector between terminals "C" (Light Green wire) and "D" (Yellow wire). Toggle mirror position switch to up position. If test light does not come on, go to next step. If test light comes on, check suspect outside mirror connector. If connector is okay, replace suspect outside mirror drive unit.
  4. If test light does not come on, check for open in left outside mirror Yellow wire circuit between mirror control switch connector terminal "D" and left outside mirror connector terminal "D". If Yellow wire circuit is okay, check for open in Light Green wire circuit between outside mirror connector terminal "C" and splice No. S398. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/century/v-1982-1996/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) .
  5. If test light does not come on, check open in right outside mirror Yellow wire circuit between mirror control switch connector terminal "E" and right outside mirror connector terminal "D". If Yellow wire circuit is okay, check for open in Light Green wire circuit between outside mirror connector terminal "C" and splice No. S399). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/buick/century/v-1982-1996/remont/mirrors/#mirrors-power) .

ONE MIRROR DOES NOT OPERATE IN LEFT/RIGHT POSITIONS

(UP/DOWN POSITIONS OPERATE NORMALLY)

  1. If left mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in left position. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connected connector, between terminals "B" (White wire) and "C" (Light Blue wire). Toggle mirror position switch to left position, and go to step 3).
  2. If right mirror does not operate, place mirror select switch in right position. Using a test light, backprobe mirror control switch connected connector, between terminals "F" (Light Blue wire) and "G" (White wire). Toggle mirror position switch to left position, and go to next step.
  3. If test light does not come on, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, replace mirror control switch. If test light comes on, backprobe suspect outside mirror connector between terminals "A" (Light Blue wire) and "B" (White wire). Toggle mirror control switch to left position, and go to next step. If test light comes on, check mirror control switch connector. If connector is okay, replace mirror control switch.
  4. If test light does not come on, check for an open in circuit between suspect outside mirror connector terminal "A" (Light Blue wire) and mirror control switch. If circuit is okay, check for an open in circuit between suspect outside mirror connector terminal "B" (White wire) and mirror control switch. Repair circuits as needed.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
CAUTIONOn some models, momentary actuation of power window switch can cause window to move directly to fully open position. When working inside door, leave ignition off whenever possible.
