Press catches together and feed guide upwards out of cover and padding.

52 13 015 Removing and Installing/Replacing Actuating Unit On Left Or Right Front Seat (Normal/Semi-Electric)

Necessary preliminary tasks

Pull lever and release screw (1).

Note. Protect seat rails (mechanism) by covering against chips/swarf.

Drill out rivets (2) with 4.2 mm dia. drill bit.

Remove actuating unit.

Unclip Bowden cable sleeve (1).

Feed Bowden cable nipple (2) out of fixture (3).

Pull lever forward to remove

1. If necessary, lever out lower locking point (1) from rear with a screwdriver.

Release screw (2).

If necessary, move seat fully forwards and upwards.

Scheme 4

Remove trim

1. Unclip at top edge
2. Unclip at rear towards top side
3. Pull on belt opening
4. Unlock lugs
5. Carefully remove trim towards front

Unfasten plug connection.

Replacement only

52 13 385 Replacing gas cartridge (pyroactivator) for crash-active head restraint on front seat

Switch off ignition!

Necessary preliminary tasks

1. Disconnect battery negative lead. See «61 20 900 DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/horns/#general-electrical-system-repair__61-20-900-disconnecting-and-connecting) .
2. Remove «crash-active head restraint»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/seats/#seats-repair__52-16-392-removing-and-installingreplacing) .

Starting situation: Head restraint is in the crash position after being triggered.

Scheme 7

Note. Pyroactivator can only be removed in the triggered state. The complete crash-active head restraint must be replaced if the event of a head restraint fault signal and an untriggered pyroactivator.

Removing cover: Raise cover (1) and pull towards rear.

Scheme 8

Removing pyrotechnical device: Press together retainer (1) for pyrotechnical device at lugs. Feed out pyrotechnical device.

Scheme 9

Removing pyroactivator: Pull pyroactivator (2) out of mounting (1) for pyrotechnical device. Unlock plug connection (3) and disconnect.

Scheme 10

Note. Dispose of plastic element and pyroactivator.

Procedure for installing pyrotechnical device

Bringing head restraint together - version without button (MFS): Pull spring catches apart and push head restraint together. Maintain position.

Scheme 11

Bringing head restraint together - version with button (Basic): Press button (1) and push head restraint together. Maintain position.

Scheme 12

Locking release plate: Hold pushed-together head restraint in position and push release plate (1) upwards up to stop. Release plate (1) must audibly snap into place.

Scheme 13

Checking head restraint lock: Check end position of release plate (1). All four springs must be engaged (snapped into place).

Scheme 14

Replacing pyrotechnical device: Connect plug (1) to new pyroactivator (2) and lock. Clip pyroactivator (2) into new mounting (3).

Scheme 15

Installing pyrotechnical device: Press together retainer for pyrotechnical device at lugs. Insert retainer for pyrotechnical device into release plate and tilt in upward direction. Retainer for pyrotechnical device must audibly snap into place.

Note. Check seating of retaining lugs in retainer.

Laying wiring harness: Secure wiring harness in carrier section with strain relief.

Scheme 17

Mounting cover: Clip cover onto carrier section. Cover must audibly snap into place.

52 13 400 Replacing Seat Cover For Left Or Right Front Seat (Normal/Semi-Electric)

Special tools required

Necessary preliminary tasks

2. Remove rear panel on front seat backrest. See «52 14 198 Removing and installing/replacing rear panel on left or right front seat backrest»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/seats/#seats-repair__52-14-198-removing-and-installingreplacing) .
3. Remove inner cover on front seat. See «52 14 041 Removing and installing inner cover on left or right front seat»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/seats/#seats-repair__52-14-041-removing-and-installing) .

When replacing seat cover

If seat cover is defective, seat cover and padding with OC3 mat must be replaced together.

New seat cover is supplied with padding, OC3 mat and if necessary seat heating.

When replacing padding with OC3 mat

If OC3 mat or padding is defective, both parts may only be replaced together.

These must be fitted with the seat cover from the car.

After fitting seat cover, enable OC3 mat with BMW diagnosis system.

Enabling seat occupancy detector (OC3 mat)

1. Connect BMW diagnosis system
2. Release seat occupancy detector
3. Clear fault memory if necessary

Unhook seat cover (2) at all retaining points.

Lever out left and right clips (1).

Installation

If necessary, replace faulty clips (1).

Remove seat cover (2) with support.

If necessary, disconnect all plug connections.

Scheme 19

Version with OC3 mat

1. OC3 mat must not be kinked under any circumstances.

Detach all retainers in side area from longitudinal wires (1).

Pull trim wires (1) forward out of seat cover.

Carefully fold back seat cover and release retainers from cross - wires (2).

Remove seat cover from padding.

Installation

Bend new retainer (2) closed with pliers 52 0 050. See 52 0 050 PLIERS

Detach plug connection (1) by twisting from backrest frame.

Disconnect plug-in connection.

Release all retainers (1) on cover.

Remove cover.

Disconnect cable strap (1) on wiring harness for fan.

Disconnect plug connections (2).

Unhook backrest cover at retaining points in area (1).

Pull off backrest cover (1) with padding towards top from backrest frame (2).

52 14 .. Removing and Installing Outer Upper Rail Trim With Electric Anchor Fitting Tensioner (from 04/2004)

Driver's seat only

Lever trim (3) out of seat mechanism

1. upwards
2. slide towards rear

and feed out of anchor fitting tensioner.

Installation

Secure plug connection with felt strip against unlocking.

Lock on plug connection to anchor fitting tensioner can be unlocked when trim is fitted.

Carpet must not project between seat rail and floor board in area of screw-down points (grinding noises).

Unclip cover (1) towards front.

Unfasten plug connection (2) and disconnect.

Unclip wiring harness from seat mechanism.

Lift out front seat.

Installation

Make sure wiring harness is correctly routed in order to avoid grating noises, jamming or collisions.

Clip in cable holder for wiring harness.

Lay wiring harness only in area (1) of cover.

Fitting the wiring harness between the carpet and the cover in control unit area (2) will result in grating noises.

Carry out a complete longitudinal adjustment (forward/back) with front seat.

Release fastening elements (1) on left and right.

Remove component (2) on left and right.

Remove complete seat wiring harness.

When replacing backrest or seat frame, break off centering hooks (1) from seat frame.

Tip seat towards rear.

Installation

Unclip hydraulic pockets (1) with supports on left and right from flex mat.

Note. If necessary, release clips (2). Remove hydraulic pockets (1) from supports (3).

Feed hydraulic pockets (1) through flex mat towards bottom.

Detach retaining points for drive in area (4).

Scheme 49

Disconnect plug connection.

Remove drive (1).

Note. Drive and hydraulic pockets form a single unit and can only be replaced completely.

Remove trim

2. Pull on belt opening to one side
3. Bend trim open slightly at top and bottom on actuating unit
4. Bend open slightly at top and bottom and pull outwards a little

Scheme 55

Detach backrest cover (1) at bottom from backrest frame.

Remove valve housing. See 52 13 060 Removing and Installing/Replacing Valve Housing For Left Or Right Front Lumbar Support (Normal/Semi-Electric) .

Disconnect air hoses (2) from valve housing.

Note. Heat air hoses gently if they are firmly seated on valve housing. Housing of valve block must not be unclipped (leakage). If necessary, release mounting and clip housing together.

If necessary, cut all retainers on lumbar cushion (3) and spring wire.

Note. Remove all remnants of retainers. Lock new retainers by bending with special tool 52 0 050. See 52 0 050 PLIERS

Detach lumbar cushion (3) from spring wire.

Remove lumbar cushion (3) downwards between backrest frame and seat mechanism.

Installation

Make sure air hoses are correctly connected to valve block (colour coding).

Air hoses must be laid without kinks.

Check lumbar cushion for damage.

52 14 060 Removing and Installing/Replacing Valve Housing For Left Or Right Front Lumbar Support (Normal/Electric)

Necessary preliminary tasks

1. Remove rear panel on front seat backrest. See «52 14 198 Removing and installing/replacing rear panel on left or right front seat backrest»(/bmw/x5/e70-2006-2010/remont/seats/#seats-repair__52-14-198-removing-and-installingreplacing) .

Release retaining screw (1).

Disconnect electrical plug connection.

Scheme 56

Disconnect air hoses (1) and (2).

Installation

Make sure air hoses (2) are correctly connected to valve block (colour coding: red/blue).

Housing on valve block must not be unclipped (leakage). If necessary, clip housing together.

Scheme 57

52 14 198 Removing and Installing/Replacing Rear Panel On Left Or Right Front Seat Backrest

Operation is shown on the left seat. When removing from the right seat, transpose the pull and striking sides accordingly.

Scheme 58

1. Grip between rear panel and backrest cover on door side until clip can be felt (do not pull).
2. At same time, firmly punch towards middle of seat on inner side (tunnel side) at top. Upper retainers spring out of seat guide.
3. Pull rear panel up out of lower guides.

Installation

Rear panel and clips must not be damaged.

When replacing seat cover

If seat cover is defective, seat cover and padding with OC3 mat must be replaced together.

New seat cover is supplied with padding, OC3 mat and if necessary seat heating.

When replacing padding with OC3 mat

If OC3 mat or padding is defective, both parts may only be replaced together.

Both parts must be fitted with the seat cover from the vehicle.

Enabling seat occupancy detector (OC3 mat)

1. Connect BMW diagnosis system
2. Release seat occupancy detector
3. Clear fault memory if necessary

Remove cover (1) on front seat

Unhook seat cover on at all retaining points (1).

When replacing seat cover

If seat cover is defective, seat cover and padding with OC3 mat must be replaced together.

New seat cover is supplied with padding, OC3 mat and if necessary seat heating.

When replacing padding with OC3 mat

If OC3 mat or padding is defective, both parts may only be replaced together.

Both parts must be fitted with the seat cover from the vehicle.

Enabling seat occupancy detector (OC3 mat)

1. Connect BMW diagnosis system
2. Release seat occupancy detector
3. Clear fault memory if necessary

Unclip cover (1) on front seat.

The rear seats must be checked for damage following an accident. This measure is applicable above all in the event of structural damage (engine carriers, luggage compartment floor side members) but also if large pieces of luggage were stowed in the luggage compartment. Disengage Bowden cable sleeve (1) from actuating unit (2).

Carefully press retaining lug (1) back with screwdriver and feed Bowden cable nipple (2) out of actuating unit.

Move head restraint (1) upwards to maximum extent.
