REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. Obtain radio code card from customer. Note stored stations and restore them after connecting battery. Stored settings of on-board computer and clock will also be lost. All available cental keys must be recoded for cars with first generation infrared transmitter locking systems.
  1. Turn off ignition. Remove starter. For M54 engine, see «STARTER (M54)»(ref-165794-S17122269062004090700000). For M62 engine, see «STARTER (M62)»(ref-165794-S38952530832004090700000). For N62 engine, see «STARTER (N62)»(ref-165794-S13363366552004090700000).
  2. Remove nut (1). (Scheme 3) Remove cable lug (2).
  3. Remove screws (1). (Scheme 4)
  4. Remove solenoid switch (1) and spring (2). (Scheme 5) Unhook pin (3).
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check pin (3) for wear and apply grease. Tighten nut for cable lug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165794-S17837818602004090700000). Do NOT turn cable lug while tightening down.

  1. Switch off ignition. Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.
  2. Remove nut (1) and disconnect battery positive lead (2) from starter motor. (Scheme 6)
  3. Remove both starter motor mounting bolts (1) on transmission. (Scheme 7) Pull starter motor out of transmission mount and turn to allow access to control leads on starter motor.
  4. Remove nuts (1). (Scheme 8) Remove lines (2) from starter motor. Remove starter motor.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check starter motor pinion and ring gear for damage. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165794-S17837818602004090700000).

  1. Disconnect battery negative lead from battery.
  2. Remove reinforcement plate.
  3. Remove protective cap (1) of battery positive lead from starter motor. (Scheme 9) Remove nut (2). Disconnect battery positive lead (3) from starter motor. Unclip battery positive lead from holders.
  4. Remove nuts (1). (Scheme 10) Detach leads (2) from starter motor.
  5. Remove screws. (Scheme 11)
  6. Pull starter motor out of transmission mount and remove. (Scheme 12)
  7. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check starter pinion and ring gear for damage. Replace starter motor, if necessary. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165794-S17837818602004090700000).

  1. Switch off ignition. Disconnect and cover battery negative terminal.
  2. Remove reinforcement plate.
  3. Release screw and nut. (Scheme 13) Remove heat shield (1).
  4. Remove nut (2). (Scheme 14) Unlock plug (1) and remove.
  5. Remove screws and pull release out of transmission mounting and remove. (Scheme 15)
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check starter motor pinion and ring gear for damage. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165794-S17837818602004090700000).
