Scheme 115: Basic fittings for "Business" mobile phone; E60, E61, E63, E64, E70, E81, E87, E90, E91, E92, E93

Introduction

Option 633 "Basic fittings for Business mobile phone" offers the best possible comfort and maximum customer benefit for using the telephone in the car.

The basic fitting for "Business" mobile phone is only available in conjunction with one of the following equipment specifications

  1. RAD2: BMW "Professional" radio
  2. M-ASK: Multi-audio system controller
  3. CCC: Car Communication Computer

Note. Option 633 supersedes the old option 638. Option 633 "Basic fittings for Business mobile phone with bluetooth interface" supersedes the old option 638 "Professional car phone". The cordless handset (SBDH) with option 638 is replaced with the customer's bluetooth mobile phone. The TCU has expanded functions and is not compatible with the TCU of option 638.

IMPORTANTFrom 03/2007: TCU and ULF-SBX-H can be fitted at the same time. From this point in time on, the two control units can be fitted at the same time. The interface box High (ULF-SBX-H) then serves solely option 6FL "USB audio interface". The telephone function is not available in the ULF-SBX-H. The TCU provides the telephone function. Please refer to function description in BMW diagnosis system under "Telephone".

Characteristics of option 633

  1. The control unit (TCU: Telematic Control Unit) allows the following telematic services: Automatic and manual breakdown call, emergency call TeleService BMW ASSIST BMW Online
  2. The GSM dual band with the frequencies 900 and 1800 MHz guarantee area-wide reception.
  3. Option 613 "Internet-based services" is no longer available. The contents of option 613 are integrated into option 616 "BMW Online" (02/2005).
  4. Option 633 has its own GPS module for location determination, even if there is no navigation system installed in the vehicle.
  5. The telephone functions can be operated using their own voice recognition system. Vehicles with Car Communication Computer (CCC) need option 620 "Voice recognition system" for speech processing.
  6. Up to 4 signed on bluetooth mobile phones are displayed in a list. From the 5th mobile phone onward, the mobile phone at the bottom of the list is deleted.
  7. The battery is recharged when the mobile phone is placed in the snap-in adapter. The recharging process is electronically regulated. Moreover, the mobile phone is connected to the vehicle's external aerial.

Note. The snap-in adapter has to be ordered separately. The base plate is installed ex works. At the customer's request, the snap-in adapter can be retrofitted by the dealer organization.

Brief description of components

  1. TCU: Telematics Control Unit The central control unit is the Telematic Control Unit (TCU). The TCU includes its own transmitter and receiver module (Network Access Device, NAD) with its own SIM card. The SIM card is the telephone card that is plugged into the mobile phone and which serves to identify the user in the telephone network. The TCU consists of the modules: Transceiver unit (Network Access Device NAD) with GPRS function (since 09/2005) GPS receiver Bluetooth module Voice recognition module The TCU supports the following functions: Telematic services Bluetooth connection to mobile phone Voice recognition
  2. RAD2: BMW "Professional" radio (note: option 633 with RAD2 only available from 03/2006) The radio serves as the gateway (data interface) between the MOST bus and the K-CAN.
  3. M-ASK: Multi-audio system controller On the E60, E61, E63 and E64, M-ASK is installed in the basic equipment specification. In this case, M-ASK is the interface for operating the telephone. The telephone directory and other information are shown on the Central Information Display (CID).
  4. CCC: Car Communication Computer The CCC is installed in connection with one of the following options: "Professional" navigation system "Voice recognition system" Several control units and the CD-ROM/MD/DVD players are integrated into a single housing. The CCC is used to control all information and communication systems, including the telephone.
  5. User interface and display Depending on vehicle's equipment specification: CID: Central Information Display The menus for the M-ASK and CCC are displayed on the CID. RAD2: The telephone can be operated on the RAD2 display (only available from 03/2006)
  6. Base plate with snap-in adapter The base plate includes the battery charger for the mobile phone. The snap-in adapter must be retrofitted by the dealer organization. The snap-in adapter is used as a bracket for the mobile phone during a journey. (white "TCU" marking)
  7. Mobile phone The customer is able to use his mobile phone, provided this is supported by BMW. Snap-in adapters are available for various bluetooth-compatible mobile phones. Information about bluetooth mobile phones that have been approved for use in vehicles of the BMW Group and about their matching snap-in adapters is available from BMW Parts Department. A compatibility matrix is available there.
  8. Hands-free microphone and microphone for voice commands The hands-free microphone is located in the roof function center (FZD) and is used to input speech information and voice commands into the hands-free system. On vehicles with CCC, option 620 "Voice recognition system" is also necessary, as voice commands cannot otherwise be processed. With option 620 "Voice recognition system", a second microphone for inputting voice commands is fitted in the roof function center. All CCC functions can thus be operated using voice commands. (The microphone for voice commands is discontinued from 09/2005; voice commands are then input through the hands-free microphone). E64, E93: The microphones are installed on the steering column.
  9. MFL: Multi-function steering wheel The buttons for the telephone functions are located on the multi-function steering wheel. When a call is accepted, the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) will switch to hands-free mode. The following functions are operated by pressing the transmit/receive button: Accept or end call Select phone number from the following lists: Telephone directory entries A - Z Top-8 list (list of the 8 most frequently called phone numbers from the telephone directory entries) Dialled numbers (list with last 8 phone numbers dialled) Show missed calls Show accepted calls Redial last number dialled (without list) Pressing the button will automatically activate the voice recognition system in the TCU. With option 620 "Voice recognition system" the CCC's voice recognition system will be activated.
  10. GPS aerial The GPS aerial picks up GPS signals. In the event of an accident, the GPS signals are used to compute the location of the vehicle even if no navigation system is installed.
  11. only E81, E87: aerial splitter These vehicles are equipped with a telephone aerial. For this reason, an additional aerial splitter is also fitted. The aerial splitter divides the aerial output between the TCU and the mobile phone.
  12. Bluetooth aerial The TCU communicates with the mobile phone via the bluetooth aerial.
  13. Emergency GSM aerial An emergency call can be transmitted through the emergency GSM aerial if the external telephone aerial is not working, because of an accident, for example.
  14. Emergency loudspeaker If an emergency call is activated and voice output via the loudspeakers in the vehicle is not possible, the system will switch to the emergency loudspeaker. The emergency loudspeaker is connected directly to the TCU (Telematic Control Unit). The emergency loudspeaker is located in the driver's footwell.
  15. Emergency call button The emergency call button is located in the front headlining, in the middle next to the sliding/tilting sunroof switch. The emergency call button is used to manually trigger an emergency call. The emergency call button has an LED. A cover panel prevents the emergency call button from being pressed unintentionally.

System functions

The following system functions are described for the US car phone

Coupling assistant

In order to give the customer better support when coupling bluetooth mobile phones to the vehicle, the menu in the Central Information Display (CID) has been restructured.

Here, the menu has been extended by the inclusion of a coupling assistant.

The coupling assistant includes the following features

  1. Step-by-step instructions for the entire coupling process on the Central Information Display (CID)
  2. Detailed help texts and instructions for additional support in case the coupling process is not successful.

Coupling comprises four steps

  1. Bluetooth activation
  2. Coupling
  3. Passkey input
  4. End coupling

Vehicles with BMW "Professional" radio also have a coupling assistant.

Functions inside the vehicle

  1. The mobile phone communicates with the TCU using the bluetooth radio standard.
  2. Hands-free mode In some countries, it is against the law for the driver to use a hand-held mobile phone while he is driving. It is however permissible to make a call in hands-free mode. When a call is accepted using the transmit/receive button on the MFL (multi-function steering wheel), the telephone switches to hands-free mode. The call is then conducted with full duplex transmission (simultaneous speaking and hearing) via the hands-free microphone and the loudspeakers in the vehicle.
  3. Voice recognition system (SVS) The voice recognition system (SVS) integrated in the TCU is used to operate the mobile phone with voice commands. The following inputs are possible using voice commands: Store name and phone number in telephone directory Call up and dial name from telephone directory Enter and dial phone number

Note. Send SMS text message (Short Message Service). SMS text messages are not displayed on the display in the vehicle. An SMS text message is only received and transmitted by the customer's mobile phone.

Telematic services

Telematics is a description for Services and is derived from Tele communications and infor matics . The permanently installed SIM card allows telematic services to be used without the customer's mobile phone being present. Telematic services comprise

  1. Telematics Manual emergency call with display of current location Automatic emergency call with display of current location Breakdown call with transmission of current location and service data
  2. TeleService Data for Condition Based Service (CBS) Manual Service Call Automatic Service Call
  3. BMW ASSIST Information services BMW Info V-info Plus Floating Car Data

Explanatory notes on a selection of telematic services

  1. Manual emergency call with display of current location A manual emergency call is triggered by pressing the emergency call button in the roof function center.
  2. Automatic emergency call with display of current location (in the event of an accident) In the event of an accident of a certain severity, the passive safety control unit (e.g. MRS: multiple restraint system) sends a crash signal to the TCU. The TCU automatically transmits an emergency call. Whenever an emergency call is made, the emergency number of the service provider is dialled. During this time, an LED lights up in the emergency call button. When the emergency call has been accepted and a voice connection established, the LED in the emergency call button flashes. The data transmitted by the TCU are sent to the service provider. The data include: The vehicle identification number, the coordinates of the current location, time and direction of travel (if the vehicle is moving).
  3. Breakdown call Call to service provider in the event of a breakdown (current location and service data are automatically transmitted).
  4. TeleService An automatic Service Call is made when the service interval indicator changes from green to yellow. The service provider is informed about an inspection being due and receives information about any wear or faults. The customer is also able to start a Service Call manually at any time. The following vehicle data are transmitted to the service provider by SMS text message: Vehicle identification number ServiceCall identifier Model code Odometer reading Registration date Date and time Color code Battery voltage Fuel level Coolant temperature Condition Based Service (CBS) for maintenance of brakes, engine oil etc.

Note. Telematic services may differ from one country to another. Depending on country and service provider, telematic services may have different contents. BMW Assist must be initialized in the dealer organization before it can be used. The contractual agreement must be signed by the customer.

Displays on the Central Information Display (CID)

On vehicles with M-ASK or CCC, the following functions can be called up in the "Communication" menu

  1. Telephone Telephone directory entries A - Z Top-8 list (list of the 8 most frequently called phone numbers from the telephone directory entries) Dialled numbers (list with last 8 phone numbers dialled) Show missed calls Show accepted calls Enter and dial phone number Coupling assistant

Parts of this function can also be called up on vehicles with BMW "Professional" radio (RAD2).

Operation

Operation of the mobile phone and the displays on the CID (Central Information Display) or radio are described in the individual operating instructions.

IMPORTANTWhen you are driving, engage the mobile phone in the snap-in adapter. This has the following benefits: Reduced risk of injury from loose objects inside the vehicle in the event of sharp braking. Continuous monitoring of battery charge state and automatic recharging. Connection to vehicle's GSM aerial providing improved reception Low EMC levels

Enabling telematic services

Telematic services are enabled before the vehicle is handed over to the customer in the dealer organization. The customer must sign a contract that the dealer organization forwards to the service provider. The Service Technician in the dealer organization initializes the telematic services (the customer can also do this himself). Language and data services are free of charge to the customer for half a year. The contract may be extended after this period has expired.

Scheme 116

Scheme 116: US car phone; E60, E61, E63, E64, E70, E90, E91, E92, E93

Precondition for US car phone is option 639 "Complete basic fittings for mobile phone (USA/CDN)".

  1. E60, E61, E63, E64 All vehicles are equipped ex works with option 639.
  2. E70, E90, E91, E92, E93 The vehicle can be ordered with either option 639 or option 640 "Basic fittings for US car phone". Vehicles with option 640 can be upgraded to option 639 in the dealer organization.

Option 639 includes a Telematic Control Unit (TCU). The TCU is the telephone's control unit.

The TCU covers the following minimum functions

  1. Manual emergency call
  2. Automatic emergency call in the event of a crash
  3. Breakdown call

The TCU includes a separate transmitter and receiver module (NAD, Network Access Device).

To ensure the best possible availability, the NAD works using 2 standards

  1. Analogue: AMPS (American Mobile Phone Standard), with frequency 800 MHz
  2. Digital: CDMA (Code Division Multiplex Algorithm), with frequencies 800/1900 MHz

A separate GPS module for determining location is included in the TCU if there is no option "Navigation system" fitted to the vehicle.

Differences in special equipment for US

Special equipment (options) are available at different levels.

  1. E60, E61, E63 and E64 up to 02/2005
  1. Option 639 "Complete basic fittings for mobile phone (USA/CDN)": All US vehicles of model series E60, E61, E63 and E64 are equipped with this option at the factory. The TCU and thus the use of telematic services are included. It is not possible to make a phone call with the basic version. In the "Business" version, it is possible to make a phone call using the hands-free system. Option 639 is the basis for all other equipment incorporating a telephone.
  2. Optional accessory 639 "Complete basic fittings for mobile phone": Optional accessory 639 includes a base plate with snap-in adapter in the center console. The customer can clip a "Motorola V60" mobile phone into the snap-in adapter. The mobile phone is permanently connected to the vehicle via the plug connector. Optional accessory 639 allows the user to recharge the mobile phone in the vehicle and to make phone calls using the outside aerial. An outside aerial reduces the level of electromagnetic waves inside the vehicle.
  3. Optional accessory 633 "Basic fittings for Business mobile phone with bluetooth interface"

Optional accessory 633 expands and replaces optional accessory 639. A bluetooth connection replaces the fixed connection of the mobile phone in the snap-in adapter. All mobile phones approved by BMW can be used.

  1. E60, E61, E63 and E64 from 03/2005 and E70, E90, E91, E92, E93 from start of series production
  1. Even with option 639 (up to 02/2005 corresponds to option 639 with optional accessory 633), each supported mobile phone can be coupled to the vehicle via bluetooth.

The basic version is discontinued (up to 02/2005 corresponds to option 639 without optional accessory 633 and optional accessory 639).

Note. The base plate and snap-in adapter must be ordered separately. The base plate with snap-in adapter are not fitted at the factory. The base plate with snap-in adapter can be retrofitted by the dealer organization at the customer's request.

Note. The description refers to option 639 with bluetooth module. To illustrate the changes, reference is made in section to the previously described optional accessories 639 and 633.

  2. RAD2: Radio 2, sales designation: BMW "Professional" radio The BMW "Professional" radio is part of the basic equipment specification of the BMW 3-Series. The radio serves as the gateway (data interface) between the MOST bus and the K-CAN. On the BMW 3-Series, the telephone is only available in conjunction with one of the following options: BMW "Professional" radio (RAD2) Car Communication Computer (CCC)
  3. M-ASK: Multi-audio system controller On the E60, E61, E63 and E64, M-ASK is installed in the basic equipment specification. In this case, M-ASK is the interface for operating the telephone. The telephone directory and other information are shown on the Central Information Display (CID).
  4. CHAMP: Central Headset And Multimedia Platform The Central Headset And Multimedia Platform (CHAMP) is available for the first time on the US version of the E70. CHAMP is a multimedia platform in the vehicle. CHAMP is standard equipment (option 663: BMW "Professional" radio). In contrast to M-ASK, CHAMP does not have a navigation system. The following features are new for CHAMP: 6 favorites buttons
  5. CCC: Car Communication Computer The CCC is installed in connection with one of the following options: "Professional" navigation system "Voice recognition system" Several control units and the CD-ROM/MD/DVD players are integrated into a single housing. The CCC is used to control all information and communication systems, including the telephone.
  6. CID: Central Information Display The menus for the M-ASK and CCC are displayed on the CID.
  7. Base plate with snap-in adapter The base plate with snap-in adapter must be retrofitted by the dealer organization. The snap-in adapter is used as a bracket for the mobile phone so that a call can be made during a journey. The base plate includes the battery charger for the mobile phone.
  8. Mobile phone The customer is able to use his mobile phone, provided this is supported by BMW. Snap-in adapters are available for various bluetooth-compatible mobile phones.
  9. Hands-free microphone and microphone for voice commands The hands-free microphone is installed in the overhead control panel and is used to input voice information in the hands-free system. If option 620 "Voice recognition system" is installed in conjunction with CCC, a second microphone will be installed (for voice commands). The microphone for voice commands is also located in the roof function center and is used to input voice commands. (The microphone for voice commands is discontinued from 09/2005; voice commands are then input through the hands-free microphone). All CCC functions can then be operated using voice commands. If option 620 is not fitted, only the telephone function can be operated using voice commands.
  10. Emergency call button The emergency call button is located in the front headlining, in the middle next to the sliding/tilting sunroof switch. The emergency call button is used to manually trigger an emergency call. The emergency call button contains 1 LED (emergency call LED) and is protected against inadvertent pressing by a flap.
  11. MFL: Multi-function steering wheel The buttons for the telephone functions are located on the MFL. When a call is accepted, the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) will switch to hands-free mode. The following functions are operated by pressing the transmit/receive button: Accept or end call Select phone number from the following lists: Telephone directory entries A - Z Top-8 list (list of the 8 most frequently called phone numbers from the telephone directory entries A - Z) Dialled numbers (list with last 10 phone numbers dialled) Show missed calls Show accepted calls Redial if no list is displayed. Redial will always be selected if the transmit/receive button is pressed and held. Pressing the button will automatically activate the voice recognition system in the TCU. With option 620 "Voice recognition system" the CCC's voice recognition system will be activated.
  12. Aerials Aerials with the following aerial systems can be fitted for reception of mobile phone networks and GPS signals: SDARS aerial, includes the following aerials: Telephone aerial 1 Telephone aerial 2 GPS aerial SDARS aerial for terrestrial reception Aerial for satellite reception Telephone and GPS aerial, includes: Telephone aerial 1 Telephone aerial 2 GPS aerial The GPS aerial picks up GPS signals. In the event of an accident, the GPS signals are used to compute the location of the vehicle even if no navigation system is installed.
  13. Emergency aerial An emergency call can be transmitted via the internal emergency aerial if the external telephone and GPS aerial or SDARS aerial is no longer operational, e.g. due to an accident.
  14. Emergency loudspeaker If an emergency call is activated and voice output via the loudspeakers in the vehicle is not possible, the system will switch to the emergency loudspeaker. The emergency loudspeaker is connected directly to the TCU (Telematic Control Unit). The emergency loudspeaker is located in the driver's footwell.
  15. Line compensator The line compensator equalizes losses in the aerial cable. The line compensator can be retrofitted at the customer's express wish to improve reception.
  16. Bluetooth aerial The TCU communicates with the mobile phone via the bluetooth aerial.

The following system functions are described for the US car phone

  1. Coupling assistant
  2. Telematic services
  3. Functions inside the vehicle

  3. Remote door unlock: remote-control unlocking of doors The vehicle unlocking feature is activated by the service provider ATX on behalf of the customer.
  4. Stolen vehicle recovery: locates stolen vehicles The service provider ATX can be given the job of locating the vehicle's position.
  1. The bluetooth mobile phone communicates with the TCU using a special radio standard.
  2. Hands-free mode In some countries, it is against the law for the driver to use a hand-held mobile phone while he is driving. It is however permissible to make a call in hands-free mode. When a call is accepted using the transmit/receive button on the MFL (multi-function steering wheel), the telephone switches to hands-free mode.   4. BMW Service Roadside Assistance (Roadside Assist) Call service provider in case of breakdown and transmit vehicle data Call with service provider to gather information about the vehicle. Data services (Service Request) The automatic service request is made when the service interval indicator changes from green to yellow. A manual service request can be made at any time on the CID (Central Information Display). The service provider is informed about an inspection being due and receives information about any wear or faults. Scheme 117: Universal charger and hands-free system; E60, E61, E63, E64, E81, E87, E90, E91, E92, E93

The identifying feature of option 644 "Basic fittings for mobile phone with bluetooth interface" is the "universal charger and hands-free facility" (ULF).

The ULF serves to connect the bluetooth-compatible mobile phone to the vehicle's electrical system. The ULF control unit is connected to the MOST bus (Media-Oriented System Transport).

The ULF does not contain its own transmitter and receiver module for GSM communications (GSM: Global System for Mobile Communication). This function is only contained in the customer's mobile phone.

The benefits of the universal charger and hands-free kit are

  1. The driver is prohibited by law from making a phone call with the mobile phone in his hand while he is driving. However, phone calls can conveniently be made using the hands-free system.
  2. The bluetooth connection is automatically established between vehicle and mobile phone.
  3. Speech processing, allowing telephone operation in hands-free mode: Select a phone number from the telephone directory Make a connection Accept a phone call
  4. If the vehicle is equipped with the Car Communication Computer (CCC): The telephone functions can only be operated in hands-free mode using option 620 "Voice recognition system". Other CCC functions can then be operated using voice commands.
  5. Transmit and receive via the vehicle's external aerial. The occupants receive less exposure to electromagnetic fields.
  6. Charging mobile phone battery

Option 644 is not included and must be retrofitted by the customer

All bluetooth mobile phones that are supported by BMW can be used with option 644. These mobile phones have been checked with regard to suitable software. BMW Parts Department has a current compatibility matrix.

The following components are involved in the ULF

  1. Universal charger and hands-free kit control unit The ULF control unit contains the components for the following functions Connection of mobile phone with bluetooth interface to the vehicle Regulated power supply to bluetooth mobile phone in snap-in adapter Communication between ULF control unit and display device in vehicle
  2. Base plate The base plate provides the connection of the bluetooth mobile phone to the vehicle wiring harness and to the ULF control unit. The snap-in adapter is fitted to the base plate.
  3. Snap-in adapter The snap-in adapter is the connecting piece between the base plate and the bluetooth mobile phone. The snap-in adapter creates the connection to the GSM aerial and to the vehicle electrical system. The snap-in adapter contains the battery charger for the mobile phone.
  4. Bluetooth mobile phone The reverse of the mobile phone engaged in the snap-in adapter is connected to the aerial connector in the GSM aerial cable. The mobile phone's battery is supplied with charging voltage via the charging contacts.
  5. Compensator (optional) The compensator equalizes losses in the aerial cable between the snap-in adapter and the GSM antenna. The compensator is only installed at the customer's express wish, e.g. if the operation conditions in a mobile phone network are unfavorable.
  6. GSM antenna The GSM antenna (GSM: Global System for Mobile Communication) is the transmitting and receiving aerial for the mobile phone. Because the GSM antenna is mounted on the outside of the vehicle, communication with the mobile phone network is improved. Moreover, vehicle occupants are less exposed to electromagnetic waves.
  7. Bluetooth antenna The bluetooth antenna is the transmit/receive aerial of the ULF control unit. Communication with bluetooth-compatible equipment is conducted through the bluetooth antenna.
  8. RAD2: Radio 2, sales designation: BMW radio "Professional" The radio serves as the gateway (data interface) between the MOST bus and the K-CAN.
  9. M-ASK: Multi-audio system controller On the E60, E61, E63 and E64, M-ASK is installed in the basic equipment specification.
  10. CCC: Car Communication Computer The CCC is installed in connection with one of the following options: Option 609 "Professional navigation system" Option 620 "Voice recognition system" Option 601 "Video module"
  11. CID: Central Information Display The menus for the M-ASK and CCC are displayed on the CID.
  12. Hands-free microphone and microphone for voice commands The hands-free microphone is located in the roof function center and is used to input speech information and voice commands into the hands-free system. On vehicles with CCC, option 620 "Voice recognition system" is also necessary, as voice commands cannot otherwise be processed. With option 620 "Voice recognition system", a second microphone for inputting voice commands is fitted in the roof function center. All CCC functions can then be operated using voice commands. E64, E93: The microphones are installed on the steering column. NOTE: From 09/2006, only 1 microphone is to be fitted. This change will be introduced gradually through the various model series.
  13. MFL: Multi-function steering wheel (optional) The MFL has buttons that can also be used for operating the telephone. If a call is accepted, the ULF will switch to hands free mode. The following functions are operated by pressing the transmit/receive button: Accept or end call Dialled numbers (list with last 8 phone numbers dialled) Pressing the button will automatically activate the voice recognition system in the ULF. Vehicles with CCC: With option 620 "Voice recognition system" the CCC's voice recognition system will be activated.

The functions needed for making a phone call with a mobile phone and ULF are based on wireless data transmission with bluetooth radio standard.

Here, a mobile phone at the top of the list has priority over the mobile phone further down. Coupling assistant In order to give the customer better support when coupling bluetooth mobile phones to the vehicle, the menu in the Central Information Display (CID) has been restructured. Here, the menu has been extended by the inclusion of a coupling assistant. The coupling assistant includes the following features: Step-by-step instructions for the entire coupling process on the Central Information Display (CID) Detailed help texts and instructions for additional support in case the coupling process is not successful. The Car Communication Computer (CCC) is fitted in conjunction with the "Professional" navigation system, voice recognition system or TV options. Several control units and the CD-ROM/MD/DVD drives are integrated into a single housing. The CCC controls all information and communication systems.

The Central Information Display (CID) is fitted with the CCC.

The CCC has a modular construction. The most important systems in the communications network are integrated as modules in the CCC. Depending on what is required, the CCC can be configured and extended.

  4. Telephone The telephone delivers the signal for the radio mute circuit and the low-frequency output signal to transmit the call to the loudspeakers.
  5. CD changer The CD changer supplies low-frequency output signals for activating the output stages.
  6. Aerials Most aerials are integrated in the rod aerial, roof-mounted aerial, side window and in the rear window. The aerials supply signals for radio and TV reception and for the remote control.
  7. GPS aerial The GPS aerial receives signals from the GPS satellites. The signals to the HIP module and the navigation system are transmitted via the aerial cable to other connections.
  8. DSC: Dynamic Stability Control DSC calculates the data for distance, speed and direction for the navigation system.
  9. Navigation DVD The navigation DVD supplies the data to the Central Information Display (CID) for the map display and for calculating the distance.
  10. Wheel-speed sensors The wheel-speed sensors deliver the signals for the distance, speed and direction (forwards and backwards) for calculation in the DSC control unit.
  11. SZL: Steering column switch cluster The SZL delivers the steering angle signal for the navigation system.
  12. Multi-function steering wheel The multi-function steering wheel houses the buttons for volume and station selection. The push-to-talk button activates/deactivates the voice recognition system.
  13. VM: Video module (not E87) The video module (VM) is the central processing unit for the video signals from the DVD drive/changer to the CCC. The video module contains 2 analogue TV tuners to guarantee trouble-free TV reception. The HYBRID video module is designed to receive both analogue and digital TV signals. The video module is available in the following versions: VM HYBRID FBAS = EURO version VM RGB = Japan version (not R56) VM FBAS = Version for other countries

The Car Communication Computer (CCC) consists of the following components

  1. Housing The size of the CCC corresponds to 2 DIN radio housings stacked one on top of the other.
  2. CD-ROM drive The CD-ROM drive allows the following CDs to be played: Audio CD CD-ROM
  3. DVD drive The DVD drive is used for the navigation DVD. When the navigation system is not in use, the DVD drive can also be used to play audio CDs and CD-ROMs.
  4. HIP module The HIP module (Host Independent Positioning) contains the GPS receiver. The GPS receiver deciphers the navigation system signals received from the aerial.
  5. Yaw-rate sensor The yaw-rate sensor supplies the data for changes of direction. This data is required to identify the location more precisely.
  6. Two-tuner radio The two-tuner radio consists of tuner 1 and tuner 2. Tuner 1 is able to receive AM and FM stations. Tuner 2 acts as a receiver for additional information from the Radio Data System (RDS) and from the Traffic Message Channel (TMC).
  7. Motherboard with processors The motherboard holds slots for additional cards and for the memory chips for CCC applications. The following processors are found on the CCC motherboard, which work in the same way as control units and can be flash-programmed.   8. Power board The power board contains the 4 audio output stages for the loudspeakers and provides the power supply for all printed circuits and modules.
  9. Audio board The audio board contains the CCC audio system controller and 2 digital sound processors. The voice recognition system can be used at the same time as audio signals are being processed. Information (e.g. Park Distance Control (PDC)) can be output at the same time as the voice recognition system is in use.
  10. Memory chip for CCC applications The memory chip for CCC applications contains two RAM memories. The memory chip is located above the two permanent RAM memories and is connected to the motherboard by a plug-in contact.
  11. Front panel The front panel acts as a cover panel for the control elements of the Car Communication Computer (CCC) R56 The R56 has a removable control panel.
  12. Aerial diversity The aerial diversity contains the aerial amplifier and switches over the aerials to FM.
  13. Possibilities for expansion The Car Communication Computer (CCC) can be extended in a modular fashion for future applications. There are 3 slots available for later retrofitting with PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) and PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association).
  14. Electric fan The Car Communication Computer (CCC) has an electric fan for cooling the audio output stages and processors. The electric fan is controlled in stages, depending on the temperature of the CCC.

CCC aerial tuner

  1. Radio The "radio" function is implemented in a two-tuner radio. Tuner 1 is principally responsible for radio reception. Tuner 1 receives the radio frequencies FM (VHF) and AM (MW, SW and LW). The radio waves from the radio station are received by the aerials in the rear window. Aerial diversity (on the rear window) feeds the HF signals received to the aerial input of the two-tuner radio via a coaxial cable. While tuner 1 receives the radio station required, tuner 2 continues to work in the background. Tuner 2 searches the station frequencies for additional signals. If a radio station transmits a stronger signal on another frequency, tuner 2 automatically switches to this alternative frequency. Tuner 2 receives additional information from the Radio Data System (RDS) and from the Traffic Message Channel (TMC). The additional RDS and TMC information is transmitted together with the signal from the FM radio station. TMC information is used by the navigation system to detect tailbacks and traffic congestion. If an AM station is selected, tuner 2 will continue to receive RDS traffic information announcements from an FM station. The station is faded out and the traffic information announcement is output through the loudspeakers. Tuner 2 also generates a list of all RDS radio and traffic information stations that can be received.

CCC applications

  1. "Professional" navigation system The "Professional" navigation system has been integrated in the Car Communication Computer (CCC). There is no longer a separate navigation system. The "Professional" navigation system has the following new features: Map information on DVD Complete display of Europe and US Several scales 1000 km, 500 km... Dynamic route planning

The navigation data can be displayed on the Central Information Display (CID) on the left-hand section of the screen, or on the right in the assist window. The left-hand area of the screen has a resolution of 400x240 pixels. The secondary screen has a resolution of 240x240 pixels. Navigation data can be displayed in the following form

  1. Map north-oriented
  2. Map orientated to direction of travel
  3. Arrow display
  4. Location

In addition to the navigation data, the following information can be displayed on the secondary screen

  1. On-board trip computer
  2. On-board computer

The following components are integrated in the CCC for the "Professional" navigation system

  1. DVD drive for reading map information
  2. HIP module for receiving satellite signals
  3. Yaw-rate sensor for precise location identification

The navigation system software is fitted in the CCC. The navigation system uses the memories and processors in the CCC. The navigation system uses the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) to detect tailbacks and traffic congestion.

If a tailback or traffic congestion is detected, an alternative route around the hindrance is computed. The system has its own diagnosis address.

GPS satellites

GPS satellites move around the earth in 6 nearly circular orbits. There are 4 GPS satellites per orbit, therefore there is a maximum number of 24 GPS satellites. Before the navigation system can process the reference signal from the GPS satellites (minimum 4 GPS satellites), the Almanac data must first be loaded.

Loading almanac data

Almanac data delivers the following data and information to the navigation system

  1. UTC (Universal Time Coordinate)
  2. Date
  3. Location of the GPS satellites
  4. Orbits
  5. Operational capacity of the GPS satellites

Once the navigation system has been switched on for the first time (terminal R ON) the GPS satellite Almanac data is received and loaded. The loading time depends on the number of "visible" GPS satellites and can take up to 20 minutes during the adaptation phase. Otherwise the almanac data is permanently stored in the system.

Note. After longer periods of not being used (longer than 1 week) it is possible that navigation will be inaccurate at first. Almanac data must be reloaded if the vehicle is not used for a prolonged period of time or if it is transported over a distance of more than 300 km from the starting point, e.g. after: Transportation from the Dingolfing factory. Return transport from abroad in the case of damage. Transporting the vehicle on a train. Shutdown of the micro power module if the idle current is violated

Navigation in the adaptation phase is possible when the vehicle is stationary or in motion. Navigation is highly inaccurate at first. The end of the adaptation phase and thus the maximum precision of the navigation system will be achieved after some time or a lengthy journey.

When the Almanac data is loaded, the navigation system is ready for operation 10 to 15 seconds after starting each time.

  1. Voice recognition system A voice recognition system (SVS) is integrated in the CCC. The SVS can be used to operate all buttons that are displayed in the CID by means of voice commands. The advantage of this is that the driver does not have to take his/her hands off the steering wheel to change the settings during a journey. The SVS can be used to control the following systems: Entertainment Communication Navigation Air conditioning (not R56) Settings (R56: Setup) There are specified voice commands that are used for the SVS. SVS engages in a dialogue with the user. If a command is not understood, prompts will be issued. The SVS software is loaded in the CCC. SVS uses the memories and processors in the CCC. The system is activated/deactivated with the push-to-talk button on the multi-function steering wheel or with the controller (not R56). Voice commands are input through a separate microphone that is directly connected to the CCC. This microphone is discontinued from 09/2006. Voice commands are input via the hands-free microphone.
  2. TV function (not E87) The TV function is available as special equipment (option 601 "TV function") for the Car Communication Computer (CCC). The Central Information Display (CID) in the dashboard acts as a screen for the TV function.
IMPORTANTFor reasons of safety, TV reception is not permissible while the vehicle is being driven! From a speed of 3 km/h upwards, the TV function is disabled. However, TV sound remains audible.

CCC gateway

The CCC Gateway control unit forms the interfaces for data exchange between the MOST bus and the K-CAN. The two bus systems use/apply various data transmission rates and data formats. To communicate with all systems, data for each bus is configured as necessary in the CCC gateway.

  1. System master The system master links the individual control units in the Car Communication Computer (CCC).
  2. Power master The power master initializes the network and switches the MOST bus on and off (wake-up, sleep mode).
  3. Network master

The network master controls and monitors the MOST bus. Each time the network is started, the exact system configuration is recorded and compared with a stored target configuration. If systems do not work correctly, these are reset and separated from the MOST bus. Any operating fault in the network or any deviation from the target configuration is stored in a fault memory for the MOST bus.

CCC user interface

The CCC user interface control unit contains the operating system for controlling the CCC. Signals from the controller for selecting the menus and submenus are processed in the CCC user interface control unit. To actuate the CID, the redgreen-blue signals from the graphics processor are converted into Low Voltage Differential Signalling (LVDS) digital signals.

CCC audio system controller

  1. Audio master The audio master collects all the audio signals in the vehicle, processes the audio signals and outputs them over the loudspeakers. The audio master also produces additional audible signals for warnings and for Park Distance Control (PDC). By mixing or fading in and out, a "softer" audible change is obtained between the signal sources.
  2. Connection master

The connection master distributes the signals of the audio sources and the audible signals to the loudspeakers. The signals are transmitted to the loudspeakers in the following way

  1. Front left and right (acoustic signals, telephone, messages from the navigation system, traffic information announcements)
  2. Front left and right, rear left and right (PDC signals)
  3. All loudspeakers (all sources in the "Entertainment" menu)

US national version (only E60, E61, E63, E64, E70, E90, E91, E92, E93, R56)

The US version has the two-tuner radio with FM, AM and Weatherband (7 channels) radio frequencies.

The R56 only has the frequency bands FM, AM.

The telephone and GPS aerial also contains telephone aerial 2.

The SDARS aerial is installed in conjunction with special equipment (option 655 "BMW satellite tuner").

Of the 8 favorites buttons, 6 can be programmed with certain functions. 2 buttons are assigned fixed functions.

Multi-audio system controller (M-ASK) The M-ASK has the following functions: Aerial tuner for radio reception with the single-tuner radio (standard equipment on E60, E61, E63, E64) Aerial tuner for radio reception with the two-tuner radio (standard equipment on E70 and E87, E90, E91, E92, E93) Navigation (with option 606).   2. Drive Depending on the design, the M-ASK is equipped with the following drives: CD drive for playback of audio CDs. CD-ROM drive for playback of audio CDs. DVD drive for loading data for the navigation system and for playback of audio CDs.
  3. Aerial tuner Depending on the design, the M-ASK is equipped with the following tuners: Single-tuner radio for reception of VHF, MW and LW radio frequencies. Two-tuner radio for reception of the strongest FM station. The traffic message channel (TMC) receives information that is used by the navigation system to avoid traffic jams (with option 606).
  4. M-ASK motherboard (M-ASK-H) The M-ASK motherboard is connected to the processor board. There are memories and processors on both boards which function as individual control units.
  5. Aerial diversity The aerial diversity contains the aerial amplifier and switches over the aerials to FM.
  6. Electric fan An electric fan for cooling the audio output stages and the processors can be found on the back of the 1 DIN radio casing.

The M-ASK outputs the following signals

  1. KOMBI: Instrument cluster The instrument cluster is used to display Check-Control messages.
  2. CID: Central Information Display The following functions can be displayed on the CID: On-board info (with option 606 is displayed as menu navigation) Entertainment Communication Climate Settings
  3. Audio operation The following signals can be output via the loudspeakers: Audio signals Parking aid (PDC: Park Distance Control) Audible signals (jingles), e.g. signals during Check-Control messages

Aerial tuner

  1. Single-tuner radio E60, E61, E63, E64 The single-tuner radio is fitted as standard in the M-ASK. The tuner receives the radio frequencies FM (VHF) and AM (MW and LW). The radio waves from the radio station are received by the aerials in the rear window. The received high-frequency signal is led by the aerial diversity (on the rear window) via a coaxial line to the aerial input on the single-tuner radio.
  2. Two-tuner radio E70, E87, E90, E91, E92, E93 Optional on: E60, E61, E63, E64 While tuner 1 receives the required radio station, tuner 2 works in the background. Tuner 2 searches the station frequencies for additional signals. If a radio station is transmitting a stronger signal on a different frequency, the radio will automatically switch to this alternative frequency. Tuner 2 receives additional information from the Traffic Message Channel (TMC). The TMC information is used by the navigation system (option 606) to avoid areas of traffic congestion.
  3. Radio Data System (RDS) Both aerial tuners receive information from the Radio Data System (RDS) which is emitted with the signal from the FM station. If the radio is tuned to an AM station, RDS traffic information announcements can still be received from an FM station. If a traffic information announcement is received, the AM station is hidden and the message is outputted over the loudspeakers. All the radio stations and traffic information stations that can be received are contained in a list of RDS stations.

Multi-audio system controller

  1. System master The system master connects the individual control units in the M-ASK.
  2. Power master The power master initializes the network and switches the MOST bus on and off (wake-up, sleep mode).
  3. Network master The network master controls and monitors the MOST bus. Each time the network is started, the exact system configuration is recorded and compared with a stored target configuration. If systems do not work correctly, these are reset and separated from the MOST bus. Any operating fault of the network or any deviation from the target configuration is stored in a fault memory for the MOST bus.
  4. Audio master The Audio master collects all the audio signals in the vehicle, processes the audio signals and outputs them over the loudspeakers. The audio master also produces additional audible signals for warnings and for Park Distance Control (PDC). By mixing or fading in and out, a "softer" audible change is obtained between the signal sources.
  5. Connection master The connection master distributes the signals of the audio sources and the audible signals to the loudspeakers. The signals are transmitted to the loudspeakers in the following way: Front left and right (acoustic signals, telephone, messages from the navigation system, traffic information announcements) Front left and right, rear left and right (signals for PDC) All loudspeakers (all sources in the "Entertainment" menu)

M-ASK user interface

The M-ASK control unit user interface processes signals from the controller (selection from the menus and submenus).

In addition the M-ASK user interface controls the displays on the Central Information Display (CID). The data in the graphics processor is immediately transmitted to the CID as LVDS digital signals.

M-ASK gateway

The M-ASK Gateway control unit forms the interfaces for data exchange between the MOST bus and the K-CAN. The two bus systems transfer data formats at different data transfer rates and in different formats. The data for each bus is configured in the M-ASK Gateway to communicate with all systems.

M-ASK navigation system

  1. Navigation with DVD In conjunction with option 606, the navigation system is integrated in the M-ASK. The navigation system has the following new features: Data for navigation on DVD Reading and storing the data for navigation in the RAM (Random Access Memory) Complete representation of Europe Manual alteration of the route calculated by the navigation system by route criteria (fastest route, motorway) and by the Via function. Dynamic route planning by using TMC information (avoiding traffic jams) List of stored destinations Exact calculation of the arrival time. By integration of the various types of streets (motorway, A roads, B roads) and the average speed of the vehicle, the arrival time can be calculated exactly. Better route guidance. When changing from one motorway or A road onto another, the road number is announced.
  2. GPS satellites GPS satellites move around the earth in 6 nearly circular orbits. There are 4 GPS satellites per orbit, therefore there is a maximum number of 24 GPS satellites. Before the navigation system can process the reference signal from the GPS satellites (minimum 4 GPS satellites), the Almanac data must first be loaded.
  3. Loading almanac data Almanac data delivers the following data and information to the navigation system: UTC (Universal Time Coordinate) Date Location of the GPS satellites Orbits Operational capacity of the GPS satellites Once the navigation system has been switched on for the first time (terminal R ON) the GPS satellite Almanac data is received and loaded. The loading time depends on the number of "visible" GPS satellites and can take up to 20 minutes during the adaptation phase. Otherwise the almanac data is permanently stored in the system.

Note. After longer periods of not being used (longer than 1 week) it is possible that navigation will be inaccurate at first. The Almanac data must be reloaded if the vehicle is transported over a distance of more than 300 km from the manufacturing point, e.g. after: Transportation from the Dingolfing factory. Return transport from abroad in the case of damage. Placing the vehicle on a train. Navigation is still possible in the adaptation phase, both when the vehicle is stationary and when it is being driven. Navigation is highly inaccurate at first. The end of the adaptation phase and thus the maximum precision of the navigation system will be achieved after some time or a lengthy journey. When almanac data is loaded, the navigation system is ready for operation 10 to 15 seconds after starting each time.

Instead of the multi-audio system controller (M-ASK), the Central Head Unit and Multimedia Platform (CHAMP) operates as the BMW "Professional" radio. In contrast to M-ASK, CHAMP does not have a navigation system.

Scheme 120: Car phone Professional; E60

The new fixed-installation telephone system based on the GSM standard (Global Standard for Mobile communications) is installed in the E60. Everest, a platform that is standardized and used globally, has been created for the fixed-installation telephone system. The Everest platform can be used for all fixed-installation telephones with a MOST or K-bus interface.

On the E60, the Everest platform with MOST interface (Media Oriented System Transport) is installed.

The Everest platform is a control unit that can be configured for various national versions and for different requirements.

The control unit is designated as a TCU (Telematic Control Unit).

The on-board supply voltage is fed from terminal 30g, which is activated by the Car Access System (CAS). [system overview...]

New features: The European version of the Everest platform includes the following new features

The TCU (Telematic Control Unit) is equipped with a bluetooth interface that is connected to a bluetooth antenna.

The TCU and the bluetooth handset communicate with each other via their bluetooth interfaces and bluetooth antennas.

To communicate with each other, the TCU and the bluetooth handset must be paired once.

The pairing of the bluetooth handset to the TCU and the communications between the bluetooth handset and the TCU is completed using bluetooth technology and the bluetooth radio standard.

If option 638 "Car phone Professional" in installed in the basic variant of the E60, then only the telephone functions can be used .

Option 638 "Car phone Professional" is only available in European version vehicles.

With option 638 "Car phone Professional", it is possible to make a phone call in hands-free mode while you are driving. The radio connection between the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) and the bluetooth handset is automatically set up by the TCU within the bluetooth reception area. Because the radio connection is set up automatically, there is no need for any manual inputs on the

  1. Handset

  3. Controller (CON)

The fixed installation telephone consists of the following components

  1. Telematic Control Unit (TCU) The TCU (Telematic Control Unit) is the transceiver for the fixed-installation Professional telephone. The TCU is configured for GSM dual band and for frequencies 900/1800 MHz. The TCU is connected to the MOST bus and thus to the vehicle's overall bus system.
  2. Eject box with SIM card holder The eject box in the storage compartment in the center console serves as a holder for the bluetooth handset in the vehicle. A SIM card holder (Subscriber Identity Module) and a SIM card reader are also integrated on the eject box.
  3. Bluetooth handset The bluetooth handset is the mobile control unit for the telephone within the bluetooth reception area (approx. 10 meters)
  4. Hands-free microphones 2 hands-free microphones are installed on the E60. The hands-free microphones are connected to the TCU (Telematic Control Unit). The bluetooth handset does not have to be operated in hands-free mode. Using the telephone with the handset is against the law in many countries.   5. GSM antenna The GSM antenna (external mobile radio antenna) is the transmit/receive antenna on the TCU for communication with a mobile phone network. The GSM antenna is fitted to the rear edge of the roof.
  6. GSM emergency antenna An emergency call can be transmitted through the GSM emergency antenna if the external GSM antenna is not functioning, for example because of an accident. The GSM emergency antenna is installed on the rear window shelf inside the vehicle.
  7. Bluetooth antenna The bluetooth antenna is the transmit/receive antenna on the TCU for communication with the paired bluetooth handset. The bluetooth antenna is installed inside the vehicle.

The overall function includes

  1. Central Information Display (CID) The CID (Central Information Display) shows the menus for the following functions: Communication Navigation Entertainment Climate
  2. Controller (CON) The Controller is used to call up the menus shown on the CID (Central Information Display). Press the Controller to start the function of the menu selected. To call up start menu i , press the MENU button next to the Controller.
  3. Multi-audio system controller (M-ASK) Commands received via the MOST are implemented by the M-ASK (multi-audio system controller), for example the assignment of channels and output of audio signals to the loudspeakers.
  4. Multi-function steering wheel (MFL) The multi-function steering wheel has buttons for controlling the telephone functions. A call is received or ended by pressing the transmit/receive button. When a call is accepted using the transmit/receive button, the TCU switches to hands-free mode.
  5. Emergency loudspeaker The emergency loudspeaker is only installed in conjunction with option 605 "Basic fittings for telematics". The emergency loudspeaker is located in the driver's footwell. In the event of a failure of the MOST bus, voice output via the loudspeakers connected to the M-ASK is no longer possible. To ensure that information from the emergency call center can still be output if an emergency call is triggered after a failure of the MOST bus, the emergency loudspeaker is connected directly to the TCU.
  6. Emergency call button An emergency call can be triggered manually with the emergency call button. The emergency call button is connected directly to the TCU (Telematic Control Unit). The emergency call button is located in the front headlining.

The system functions for making a phone call with the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) and the paired bluetooth handset are based on wireless data transmission with bluetooth technology.

IMPORTANTPlease comply with local legal authorization for bluetooth technology. Bluetooth technology is not approved for use in all countries If approval has not been issued, the bluetooth connection between the bluetooth handset and the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) must be temporarily separated.

Principal functions of the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) for telephone

The basic version of the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) allows the following principal functions

  1. Make call in hands-free mode
  2. Privacy mode (speaking and listening via bluetooth handset)
  3. Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging
  4. Voice recognition

Hands-free mode

In many countries it is against the law for the driver to use the handset while he is driving. It is however permissible for the driver to make a call using hands-free mode.

When a call is accepted using the transmit/receive button on the multi-function steering wheel (MFL), the telephone switches to hands-free mode. The call is then conducted with full duplex transmission (simultaneous speaking and hearing) via the hands-free microphone and the loudspeakers in the vehicle.

Privacy mode

In privacy mode, the call is conducted using the bluetooth handset. It is more difficult for other people to hear the conversation when the bluetooth handset is used.

Only passengers are permitted to make calls using the bluetooth handset during a journey.

Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging

An incoming SMS text message is displayed in the display of the bluetooth handset and in the CID (Central Information Display).

However, an SMS text message can only be written and sent from the bluetooth handset.

Voice recognition system (SVS)

A voice recognition system (SVS) integrated in the TCU (Telematic Control Unit) allows various telephone functions to be operated with voice commands.

Telecommunications services without navigation

With option 638 "Car phone Professional", only the telephone functions can be executed with the basic version .

With the combination option 638 "Car phone Professional" and option 607 "TeleService", both the telephone and the TeleService functions are available.

The telecommunications services without navigation are shown in the upper part of the table .

Telecommunications services with navigation

The range of functions offered by the basic version of option 638 "Car phone Professional" with option 607 "TeleService" can be extended by combination with the following options

  1. Option 605 "Basic fittings for telematics"
  2. Option 612 "BMW Assist"

  4. Option 616 "Online platform"

The telecommunications services with navigation are shown in the lower part of the table .

All items of special equipment with telematics functions ( Tele communication and infor matics ) are dependent on the country concerned. Full use can only be made of telematics functions if the necessary conditions are satisfied (e.g. a service provider is available who is able to accept and forward incoming calls around the clock).

Emergency call functions

Note. Transmitting an emergency call without a SIM card. It is possible to transmit an emergency call without a SIM card. Even if the SIM card reader does not recognize a SIM card as being present, an emergency call can still be transmitted if required.

Manual emergency call

A manual emergency call is triggered with the country-specific emergency number by pressing the emergency call button in the middle of the front headlining.

If option 605 "Basic fittings for telematics" is installed, the TCU first try to establish a voice connection to the service provider when the emergency call button is pressed. In addition, an SMS text message will be sent to the service provider giving the coordinates of the vehicle's location.

If no connection with the service provider can be established within 60 seconds, a standard emergency call will be triggered from the mobile phone network.

Automatic emergency call

If an accident exceeding a certain severity occurs, a crash message will be sent to the TCU through a wire connection via the SGM (Safety and Gateway Module).

If option 605 "Basic fittings for telematics" is installed, the TCU will first try to establish a voice connection to the service provider. In addition, an SMS text message will be sent to the service provider giving the coordinates of the vehicle's location.

If no connection with the service provider can be established within 60 seconds, a standard emergency call will be triggered from the mobile phone network.

The service provider will use the voice connection to try to gain more detailed information from the vehicle occupants about

  1. the severity of the accident
  2. the number of people injured
  3. the condition of the injured persons.

Rescue operations are initiated in accordance with the information obtained.

Breakdown call

A breakdown call is only possible if option 605 "Basic fittings for telematics" is installed and if a breakdown recovery agreement has been concluded.

The CID

(Central Information Display) will then show "BMW breakdown recovery" in the "BMW Assist" menu.

Pressing the Controller will set up a telephone connection to the BMW Group Mobile Service and the following data will be transmitted

  1. Vehicle location
  2. Service data

Monitoring and recharging the battery in the bluetooth handset

The charge level of the battery in the bluetooth handset (e.g. lithium ion battery) is constantly monitored. If the battery charge falls below a predefined level, the battery will automatically be recharged.

Functions of the Central Information Display (CID) and Controller

The functions called up from the start menu with the Controller are

  1. Enter PIN code (Personal Identification Number)
  2. Telephone
  3. Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging
  4. "BMW Assist"
  5. Further functions, as described in the owner's handbook

Functions of the bluetooth handset

It is possible to carry out the following functions using the bluetooth handset

  1. All possibilities listed under "Functions" for the CID (Central Information Display) and Controller, except "BMW Assist".

Function sequences

A bluetooth handset paired to the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) is automatically detected in the bluetooth reception area. After detection, the bluetooth radio connection is automatically established.

Note. Initial pairing of bluetooth handset to the TCU (Telematic Control Unit). Initial pairing of a bluetooth handset to the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) is made during the initial start-up of the "Car phone Professional" at the factory.

With the pairing, the bluetooth handset is assigned to the Telematic Control Unit (TCU).

The "Car phone Professional" can be operated with the functions of the bluetooth handset and the CID (Central Information Display).
