18 00 020 Removing And Installing Complete Exhaust System (S54)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform this work after engine has cooled down.
WARNINGThe complete exhaust system is very heavy. Do not remove the exhaust system in one complete operation, rather carry out the removal in 2 stages
  1. Remove rear muffler. Refer to «18 12 030 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REAR MUFFLER»(/bmw/m3/e46-1999-2006/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair__18-12-030-removing-and-installingreplacing) .
  2. Remove intermediate pipe with catalytic converter. Refer to «18 20 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INTERMEDIATE PIPE WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER»(/bmw/m3/e46-1999-2006/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair__18-20-020-removing-and-installing) .

18 32 005 Removing And Installing/Replacing Catalytic Converter (S54)

Note. For Special Tool identification (Scheme 4)

Special Tools Required

  1. 31 2 220
WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Remove underbody protection.

US Version

Catalytic converters are located in exhaust manifolds.

Remove and install both exhaust manifolds. Refer to 11 62 140 REMOVING AND INSTALLING, SEALING/REPLACING BOTH EXHAUST MANIFOLDS (S54) .

ECE version

Release screws.

Unclip both plug connections (1) and disconnect.

Disconnect both plug connections.

Note. Plastic holder with both cables of monitor sensors is removed with catalytic converter.

Release nut.

Remove holder (1).

Unclip plug connection (2) and disconnect.

Scheme 2

Release screw connection of flanges at exhaust manifold.

Scheme 3

Installation

Check seals and replace if necessary.

Replace self-locking nuts and screws.

Coat thread with copper paste.

Preliminary tightening

Tighten screws alternately to locate relevant flange pair.

Final tightening

Tighten screws to specified.

Tightening torque, (24 N.m.).

Support catalytic converter with jack and special tool 31 2 220 and secure against falling out.

Release screw connection of intermediate pipes at both catalytic converters.

Installation

Check seals and replace if necessary.

Replace self-locking nuts and screws.

Coat thread with copper paste.

18 20 010 Replacing Intermediate Pipes (S54)

Note. For Special Tool identification (Scheme 4)

Special Tools Required

  1. 31 2 220

Release nuts.

Remove air deflector (1).

Support intermediate pipes with jack and special tool 31 2 220 and secure against falling out.

Release screws (1).

Remove reinforcement plate (2).

Release screws (3).

Reinforcement plate (4) remains connected by means of 2 rubber mounts to exhaust system.

Release screws and remove body reinforcement strut (1).

Release screw connection of flanges between rear muffler and intermediate pipes.

Installation

Check seal, replace if necessary.

Installation

Check seals and replace if necessary.

Replace self-locking nuts and screws.

18 20 020 Removing And Installing Intermediate Pipe With Catalytic Converter

Note. For Special Tool identification (Scheme 4)

US version

Front pipes are fitted in place of the ECE catalytic converter.

ECE version

Release screws.

Unclip both plug connections (1) and disconnect.

Note. Plastic holder with both cables of monitor sensors is removed with catalytic converter.

Release nut.

Unclip plug connection (2) and disconnect.

Installation

Check seals and replace if necessary.

Replace self-locking nuts and screws.

Coat thread with copper paste.

Preliminary tightening

Tighten screws alternately to locate relevant flange pair.

Final tightening

Tighten screws to specified.

Tightening torque, (24 N.m.).

CAUTIONA 2nd person is essential to help ensure safe removal of the exhaust system.

Installation

Check seal, replace if necessary.

Remove intermediate pipe with catalytic converter. Refer to 18 20 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INTERMEDIATE PIPE WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER .

18 12 030 Removing And Installing/Replacing Rear Muffler

Release screw connection of flanges between rear muffler and intermediate pipes.

Installation

Check seal, replace if necessary.

Support rear muffler with jack and special tool 31 2 220 and secure against falling out.

Release nuts (1) on right from rear muffler.

Release nuts (1) on left from rear muffler.

Nut (2) is concealed under rear apron.

Carefully pull panel away and release nut (2).

Carefully lower rear muffler and remove.

Installation

Align tailpipes on left and right of rear muffler to rear apron.
