Cruise Control System BMW M3 E36

Cruise Control Systems 1 illustration ~375 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The cruise control system allows driver to maintain a constant cruising speed greater than 25 MPH without using accelerator pedal. Accelerate to desired speed and hold cruise control switch forward in ACCEL position. This sets the cruising speed and stores it in memory. Pushing cruise control switch forward again will increase the previous set speed until the switch is released. Pulling back on cruise control switch will reduce set speed until switch is released. New set speed will be maintained.

Cruise control system will disengage temporarily when the brake or clutch pedal (if equipped) is pushed down. To cancel set speed without erasing memorized speed, move cruise control lever down. To reactivate system, move cruise control switch up to recall previous speed. The vehicle will automatically accelerate to the previous set speed. To erase set speed from memory, turn ignition off.

WARNINGDO NOT shift into Neutral when cruise control system is switched on.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Check cruise control fuse(s). Fuse circuit identification is marked on inside of fuse compartment lid. Ensure brakelight operation is correct. Brakelight bulbs must both work. Check clutch switch operation (if equipped). Ensure speedometer operates. Repair or replace components as necessary.

COMPONENT TESTS

Note. See WIRING DIAGRAM for terminal identification.

CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR

  1. Disconnect harness from cruise control actuator. Ground terminal No. 2 of cruise control actuator. Using a fused jumper wire, touch battery voltage to cruise control actuator terminal No. 3. Magnetic clutch should click.
  2. Ground terminal No. 1 of cruise control actuator. Using a fused jumper wire, touch battery voltage to cruise control actuator terminal No. 4. Cruise control actuator motor should run. Replace cruise control actuator if it does not work as described.

CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH

Disconnect cruise control switch connector. Check resistance across terminal as indicated. See CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH TEST table. If switch does not test as described, replace cruise control switch.
