Automatic A/c-Heater Systems: Removal & Installation BMW 5 series E39 facelift

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

Note. Removal and installation procedures for all components were not available at time of publication. See exploded views for reference.

Unlatch A/C-heater control panel by inserting a feeler gauge between both sides of A/C-heater control panel and console. Pull out A/C-heater control panel. Disconnect wiring harness. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150755-S29603323632002112100000) in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Release clips from right and left air ducts. Twist air ducts and lift out. Disconnect heater core lines. Blow out heater core with compressed air. Remove heater core attaching bolts on engine side of firewall. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove pressure and suction pipe hex bolts from firewall fitting. Remove pressure and suction pipe fitting from firewall.
  2. Disconnect glove box stop cable. Unclip wood trim strip above glove box. Pry off right side instrument panel cap. Remove screws under wood trim strip. Remove lower instrument panel screws. Remove lower instrument panel. Remove radio and radio frame. Remove upper instrument panel trim. (Scheme 1) Remove glove box.
  3. Disconnect right and left transverse reinforcement. Disconnect transverse reinforcement on right and left sides of center console. (Scheme 7) Disconnect transverse reinforcement from steering column and lower steering column. See «STEERING COLUMN»(ref-138729-S14941741762002042200000). Cut all cable ties on transverse reinforcement. Lift out transverse reinforcement. Remove retaining rivet and lift out air duct from rear compartment. Remove heater screws. Disconnect electrical connector. Lift out A/C-heater unit. (Scheme 2)

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wiring harnesses are not pinched during installation. Replace heater core flange "O" rings. It may be necessary to recode instrument cluster (dealership procedure only). Check A/C-heater system for proper operation.

Remove top of instrument panel. Remove foam rubber mat. Release clips and pry out ventilation duct. Slide connecting rail to one side. Pull both linkages out of flaps. Release clips and remove blower cover from lugs. (Scheme 2) Disconnect electrical connector. Remove blower motor screws. Remove blower motor. (Scheme 4) To install, reverse removal procedure.

Lift hood. Locate housing on vehicles right next to firewall. Unfasten retaining clip and remove cover. (Scheme 5) Lift out filter insert. Clean housing and drain hole. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove left and right footwell air outlets. Remove evaporator cover screws. Remove evaporator cover. Release clips and remove evaporator tube cover.
  2. Release clips and remove footwell vent outlet. Remove heater core cover screws. Remove heater core. (Scheme 6) Remove 4 screws and remove lower section of evaporator housing. Remove expansion valve screws. Pull tubes slightly apart and remove expansion valve. Remove evaporator.

  1. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-150755-S29603323632002112100000) in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position.
  2. Unlock bayonet mount at base of steering column by turning it counterclockwise. Remove screw and lower cover on steering column. Remove bolt from steering column universal joint. Remove sheared off screws, and lower steering column. To install, reverse removal procedure.
