The A/C-heater system automatically adjusts passenger compartment temperatures via a control panel and A/C-heater control unit. The A/C-heater control unit regulates heater operation through 2 electromagnetic water valves. Temperature sensors continuously input information to A/C-heater control unit.
There are 2 types of A/C-heater control panels used on 5 series vehicles. On models with IHKR systems, control panel consists of 3 control levers for air distribution and 3 switches for temperature control. On models equipped with IHKA systems, 3 groups of push buttons are located on the lower portion of control panel, and three rotary dials on the upper portion. see scheme 2 On both systems, temperature and air distribution for driver's side and front passenger's side can be controlled separately. Air distribution flaps are operated by up to 10 stepper motors responding to program selected at A/C-heater control panel. Outside air is drawn through a microfilter to filter pollen and dust.
System uses up to 5 input sensors for operation: outside temperature sensor, inside temperature sensor, heater core temperature sensor (driver's side), heater core temperature sensor (passenger's side), and evaporator temperature sensor. A/C-heater control unit processes sensor signals and adjusts system temperatures accordingly.
Each electromagnetic water valve controls flow rate through heater core. Auxiliary circuits adjust heater output in relation to air volume and different air/water temperatures. An additional water pump is used to maintain a minimum pressure level to water valves. This additional water pump will only operate with heater on.
