CAUTIONVarious types of ATF are available for this transmission. Only use ATF available as a replacement part for the planetary gearing in automatic transmission 09E. Other oils can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.

Check ATF level and top off --> ATF in planetary gearing .

Transmission with combined oil system

  1. The oil spaces in front final drive and transfer case are combined together via return line - 2 - , supply line - 4 - and protective pipe - 5 -.
  2. The side shaft runs in gear oil in the protective pipe.
  3. A additional heat exchanger for transmission oil cooling - 1 - for transfer case - 3 - and front final drive - 6 - is attached to the transmission.

There is approx. 300 ml of additional gear oil in the transmission oil cooling heat exchanger - 1 - with supply and return line, follow oil level check exactly.

Torque converter, important information

CAUTIONCheck installation dimension of torque converter before installing transmission Installation dimension . If the torque converter is not inserted properly, the ATF pump will be damaged.

  1. There are various torque converters. Identification is performed via code letters - arrow -.

  1. Old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782

Work procedure

In case of soiling of the ATF via shavings or during a major transmission overhaul, torque converter must be drained.

  1. Extract ATF from torque converter using Used Oil Collection and Extraction Tool V.A.G 1782.

Work procedure

  1. Torque converter, removing --> «Torque converter, removing and installing»(ref-289214-S12910984192008062700000)

  1. Pry out shaft seal using Extractor Lever VW 681.
  2. Apply ATF to circumference and sealing lips of shaft seal.
  1. Installation position: Open side of shaft seal faces transmission.

  1. Using Thrust Piece T10137 , drive in torque converter seal as far as stop on thrust piece.

  1. Check hub - arrow - of torque converter for wear grooves.

Note. The torque converter is welded together and must be replaced as a complete unit if it is damaged or faulty.

Torque converter, removing and installing

Removing

  1. Transmission removed
  1. Attach transmission to assembly stand --> «Transmission, attaching to assembly stand»(ref-289214-S17662278122008062700000) .
  2. Remove left drive flange --> «Left flange shaft, removing and installing»(ref-289214-S34089797522008062700000) .
  3. Carefully remove torque converter.

Installing

  1. Clean torque converter hub and shaft seal.
  2. Torque converter, checking --> «Torque converter, checking»(ref-289214-S36301404532008062700000)
  3. Lightly coat shaft seals with ATF.
  4. Press torque converter hub through shaft seal as far as first stop.
  1. Lightly press torque converter inwards and turn until slots on torque converter hub engage in drive lugs on ATF pump gear and torque converter slides inward noticeably.

Scheme 11: Installation dimension

If torque converter has been installed properly, the distance - a - between surface of mounting holes and surface of the torque converter bell housing must have the following value

  1. With 10-cylinder gasoline engines: at least 18.9 mm.
  2. With 8-cyl. and 12-cyl. MPI engines: at least 5.9 mm.

  1. Always use new original bolts to secure torque converter to drive plate when installing transmission.
