The components of the systems Radio R / Telephone Transceiver R36 / Navigation System with CD Drive Control Module J401 / Speech Input Control Module J507 / TV Tuner R78 / Chip Card Reader Control Module J676 / Media Player, Position 1 R118 / Media Player, Position 2 R119 / Digital Sound System Control Module J525 / Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533 are combined with one another in a "ring". This "ring" represents the optical MOST-Bus.

The connection to the other BUS systems in the vehicle are provided by the Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533.

The "central control module" is the Front Information Display Control Head Control Module J523. The transfer of signals representing the instrument cluster display occurs via the MOST-Bus to Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533 and from there via CAN-Bus (instrument cluster) to the instrument cluster.

In the event that malfunctions occur in any Communication system, troubleshooting is performed using the in the "Guided Fault Finding" operating mode.

Fiber optic MOST-Bus, notes

In addition to the CAN-Bus systems, a fiber optic data bus system has been implemented.

The Microphone Unit (in front roof module) R164 in the Front Interior Light W1 consists of a maximum of three microphones.

As of calendar week 22/04, only two microphones were installed.

For this, one microphone is connected directly to Telephone Transceiver R36. The other microphones are connected to the Digital Sound System Control Module J525.

Removing

To remove, the screen ( Front Information Display Control Head J685 ) must be folded out. If it is no longer possible to fold out the screen by operating the Front Display Open/close Button E462 , the emergency release must be operated.

1. Pull on it in - direction of arrow - and slide the trim - 2 - using the other hand into the instrument panel until screen - 1 - is completely folded out.

2. Carefully pull screen unit - 1 - out of instrument panel - 2 -.
3. Disconnect harness connector on screen.
4. Disconnect harness connector to Open-Close Display Motor V301.

The screen can be separated from the screen unit.

1. Remove bolts - arrows - (2 Nm).

1. Pry the mount for panel - 1 - out of screen unit - 2 - - arrows -.

Note. Mount and screen unit at top may be damaged. Only the screen (if functioning) is to be used again.

1. Remove screen by loosening both screws - arrows - (2 Nm).
2. Remove the wire from screen to Front Information Display Control Head Control Module J523.
3. Disconnect harness connector to Open-Close Display Motor V301.
4. To do so, remove drivers side storage tray --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/s8/d3-2007-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior) .

1. Remove screen unit completely.

Installing

1. Install screen into a new screen unit.
2. Perform further installation in reverse order.

Multimedia Control Head E380 , removing and installing

Procedure when "buttons are stuck"

If one or more buttons in Multimedia Control Head E380 become stuck, it may be the result of soiling from crumbs, grains of sand or something similar.

Contamination (buttons are stuck) from sticky fluids (e.g. cola) cannot be eliminated with compressed air. In this case, the Multimedia Control Head E380 must be replaced.

1. As first step try to eliminate malfunction by applying compressed air (with or without oil) to clean the buttons. If this is not successful, the Multimedia Control Head E380 must be replaced.

Removing

Multimedia Control Head E380 is fastened with bolts to the center console panel.

1. Remove center console panel --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/s8/d3-2007-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior) .
2. Disconnect all harness connectors.

First remove the Driver Identification Control Module J589

1. Rotate panel on to the rear side.

1. Unscrew bolts - 3 - (1 Nm) and pull Parking Brake Contact Switch F321 - 2 - downward out of Multimedia Control Head E380 - 1 -.
2. Now remove Multimedia Control Head E380 from the panel.

Radio system is a component of the communication system. A "radio unit" is no longer installed, rather the Radio R consists of a radio tuner with additional connector positions in the left rear luggage compartment.

A Satellite Radio R146 (SDARS) may also be installed.

Operation is performed via the Multimedia Control Head E380. Data transfer to Multimedia Control Head E380 and to Digital Sound System Control Module J525 occurs via the MOST-Bus.

Signals of rear window antenna reach the Radio R via the Antenna Amplifier R24 with integrated Antenna Selection Control Module J515.

In contrast, SDARS signals from Radio, Telephone, Navigation System Antenna R52 (Ter/Sat/GPS/GSM-emergency) to Satellite Radio R146.

Fault finding is performed via "Guided Fault Finding" using.

The individual Communication systems have extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities.

Antenna cable, servicing

If it is determined that the antenna cable between the radio and the antenna is damaged or malfunctioning, complete antenna cable replacement is not necessary.

An antenna cable repair system has been developed, that allows replacement of individual antenna cable sections as needed.

The telephone system consists of the versions

1. Telephone fixed installation

Telephone Transceiver R36 is incorporated into the MMI Infotainment system via the MOST-Bus.

The Telephone Base plate R126 for SIM card and for wireless Telephone Handset R37 (Bluetooth technology) is located in the center console/center armrest. Operation is performed via Multimedia Control Head E380 or via Telephone Handset R37.

Microphones for the Microphone Unit (in front roof module) R164 are integrated in the Front Interior Light W1. Of these, one microphone is connected to Telephone Transceiver R36.

1. Cellular telephone preparation

Telephone Transceiver R36 is incorporated into the MMI Infotainment system via the MOST-Bus. In addition, a Bluetooth Antenna R152 is available.

The Telephone Base plate R126 is installed in the center console/center armrest. Operation is performed via Multimedia Control Head E380 or via Cellular Telephone R54.

Two microphones for the Microphone Unit (in front roof module) R164 are integrated in the Front Interior Light W1. Of these, one microphone is connected to Telephone Transceiver R36.

1. Bluetooth car telephone

The Bluetooth car telephone is also equipped with operation for the Bluetooth cellular phone. The Bluetooth cellular telephone must not be incorporated into a base plate and not into the vehicle handsfree equipment.

Incorporation occurs exclusively via the Bluetooth connection. In this way, the SIM card of the cellular telephone (phone book) can also be read out.

The Bluetooth car telephone possesses its own handset (Bluetooth handset) with SIM card insert slot and charge cradle.

The Bluetooth car telephone and cellular phone can be operated via the Bluetooth handset, the handsfree equipment in the multi-function steering wheel and via the speech dialogue system.

With the cellular phone preparation and the Bluetooth car telephone, all Audi-approved Cellular Telephones R54 with Bluetooth interface can be operated.

If the Telephone Transceiver R36 was replaced, then the Bluetooth connection between Telephone Transceiver R36 and Telephone Handset R37 must be adapted anew.

The adaptation process is performed with the menu of the Telephone Handset R37.

1. Switch on MMI and Telephone Handset R37. Telephone Handset R37 lies in the Telephone Base plate R126.
2. Push the "Menu" button on the Telephone Handset R37 and select "Bluetooth".
3. Confirm with the OK button.
4. Select "Vehicle base station" and confirm with "OK".

1. Select "Search anew" and confirm with "OK". The search process will be started. The process will last up to 30 seconds.

If the Bluetooth device is detected, its name will appear in the display of Telephone Handset R37 : "BT-Audi D3".

1. Select "Connect".

"Connection successful" appears in display of Telephone Handset R37.

1. Then perform a function test of the telephone.

As of model year 03

If the Telephone Transceiver R36 or the Telephone Handset R37 was replaced, then the Bluetooth connection between Telephone Transceiver R36 and Telephone Handset R37 must be adapted anew.

The adaptation process is performed with the menu of the Telephone Handset R37.

First, all data of Bluetooth devices in Telephone Handset R37 must be erased.

1. Switch on MMI and Telephone Handset R37. Telephone Handset R37 lies in the Telephone Base plate R126.
2. Once the Motorola logo appears on the Telephone Handset R37 , press the C button as often until the "Menu" display appears.
3. Push the "Menu" button on the Telephone Handset R37 and select "Bluetooth".
4. Select "Devices" and confirm with the "Menu" button.

1. Select "Erase" and confirm with the highlighted "Select" button.
2. Erase each individual entry in the list.

Then

1. Go back in the "Menu" far enough until "Bluetooth" appears.
2. Confirm with the highlighted "Select" button.
3. Select "Vehicle base station" and confirm with the highlighted "Select" button.
4. Select "Search anew" and confirm with the highlighted "Select" button. The search process will be started. The process will last up to 30 seconds.

The Audi-Motorola Digital telephone is available as an option and works in conjunction with the Telematics system. The Telephone/Telematics system is linked to the Communication system via the CAN-Bus to the Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533.

The base plate/cradle for the telephone handset ( Telephone Base plate R126 ) is located in the center console. When the telephone handset is removed from the base plate, it functions as a normal cellular telephone, i.e. no interaction with vehicle systems (Telematics, MMI or other) is possible.

When the telephone handset is docked, telephone functions are performed either with the telephone handset or Multimedia Control Head E380. Information is displayed on either of the two Multimedia Interface (MMI) displays.

Two microphones in Microphone Unit (in front roof module) R164 that support the voice recognition system are integrated in the front roof module ( Front Interior Light W1 ).

Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with the functions and operation specifics of the Telephone/Telematic System. Always read the Telephone/Telematic system owners manual and review applicable system functions.

TV system is a component of the MMI Infotainment system.

TV Tuner R78 is connected via the MOST-Bus to the other components of the MMI Infotainment system. Operation is performed via the Multimedia Control Head E380.

For regions with digital TV reception (DVB-T), a Digital TV Tuner R171 can also be installed. Digital TV Tuner R171 is operated using a separate remote control.

Digital TV Tuner R171 is not integrated into any BUS system and only has limited diagnostic capabilities via the analog TV Tuner R78.

Signals of rear window antenna reach the Digital TV Tuner R171 via the Antenna Amplifier R24 and from there to the TV Tuner R78 (looped in).

As of model year 06, a "hybrid" - TV Tuner R78 for reception of analog and digital TV broadcasts have been installed.

The Telematics system is integrated into the vehicle Communication system. The Telematics system is linked to the Communication system via the CAN-Bus to the Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface J533.

Telematics is an in-vehicle, personal communication system using cellular, Internet and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies to provide the customer with safety, security and convenience services.

GPS is a "constellation" of 24 satellites that orbit the earth and constantly broadcast radio signals. The Telephone/Telematics Control Module J526 receives GPS data, decodes it, and transmits the vehicles location to the service providers call center via the national cellular network.

Telematics services for Audi customers are provided by OnStar via a dedicated call center. Service plans may provide route directions and concierge services as well as emergency or vehicle repair services. For details --> Audi Telematics by OnStar Owners Manual.

During events where the Airbag Control Module J234 processes a crash signal, the vehicle emergency flashers are activated and the doors are unlocked via the comfort/convenience system. In addition, the Telematics system automatically places an emergency call to the OnStar call center.

Telematics hardware includes the driver operated Telematics Control Head E264 (which contains the OnStar control buttons and system status light) in Front Interior Light W1 , Cellular Telephone R54 , microphone, backup loudspeaker, roof-mounted GPS/Cellular antenna and Telephone/Telematic Control Module with supporting software.

An emergency (back-up) battery for the Telephone/Telematic Control Module is also used in case the vehicle battery goes dead or becomes disconnected due to accident, impact etc.

An Audi-Motorola Digital Telephone ( Telephone/Telematics Control Module J526 ) is available as an option in conjunction with the Telematics system.

Telematics functions are performed via the Telematic Control Head (or Digital Telephone handset where applicable). Information can be displayed on either of the Multimedia Interface (MMI) displays. The system is also capable of speech recognition.

Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with all Telematics functions, operating specifics and the particular service plan which the customer subscribes to "Audi Telematics by OnStar Owners Manual and/or OnStar " Quick Reference Guide to become familiar with applicable features and functions.

Telematics Control Head - OnStar controls

The Telematics Control Head is integrated with the front interior light module. The control head contains three separate buttons as well as a system status indicator light (LED).

The OnStar ( "On*" ) button is used to contact the OnStar call center to request various convenience services. It is also used to initialize/activate the owners subscription to OnStar services and/or update the customers account in the event that the Telephone/Telematic Control Module requires replacement.

The Emergency button is used to contact the OnStar call center to request emergency services such as fire department, police etc.

The Communication ( "DOT" ) button is used to end a call to the OnStar call center, place or answer personal calls (in conjunction with the optional digital cellular telephone), or cancel a call if one of the other buttons is accidentally pressed.

Telematics Control Head - OnStar system status light

The system status light (in the form of a Light Emitting Diode - LED) is located between the Communication and Emergency buttons. The green light comes on after a self-check routine is performed (approx. 10- 15 seconds after ignition is switched on).

Indicated conditions

1. Green: Indicates system has passed self-test and is ready to place or receive calls. Light remains on even in areas without cellular coverage.
2. Blinking green: Indicates a call has been initiated or is in progress.
3. Red: Indicates system has not passed self-test, indicates system malfunction, or indicates that the Telematics Service Mode is activated.
4. Blinking red: Indicates a call has been initiated or is in progress and there is system malfunction or indicates that the Telematics Service Mode is activated.

1. No LED: System is either off or in back-up battery mode.

The following allows technicians to perform an initial evaluation of Telematics system operation status for troubleshooting using the OnStar system status light (and pre-recorded system messages where applicable).

Note. After pressing either the OnStar or Emergency button, a recorded message announces: "connecting to OnStar," followed by progression tones. Normal connection time is 10 - 15 seconds. However, due to local cellular/GPS conditions, making a connection could take up to three minutes. Be patient.

Condition - system status light "green" plus

1. Relocate vehicle to a more elevated or open area and repeat connection attempts. Depending on the local cellular/GPS traffic conditions, several connection attempts may be necessary (and are normal).

Shortcomings in the vehicles cellular/GPS antenna system also affects connectivity.

1. Check all cellular/GPS antenna connections, and perform OBD program using Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in mode "Vehicle Self Diagnosis" and/or "Guided Fault Finding". Check for DTCs related to antenna function.

If you are still unable to connect

1. Record the VIN and customer details and call the OnStar Customer Care at 1-888-390-4050. Identify yourself to the advisor as an Audi technician. The advisor will verify the customers OnStar account is active. Further troubleshooting assistance may be given.

Condition - system status light "red" or "flashing red"

Telematics system may be in Telematics Service Mode or system hardware (vehicle portion) is affected.

1. Ensure Telematics Service Mode is deactivated --> «Telematics Service Mode, activating and deactivating»(/audi/s8/d3-2007-2011/remont/accessories-control-systems/#communication__telematics-service-mode-activating-and-deactivating) .

Installing

1. Install in reverse order.

Note. Ensure correct seating and fit of electrical connections. Antenna connections (couplings) must be properly aligned and tight to ensure proper reception.

Telephone/Telematics Control Module J526 , replacing and reconfiguring

After replacing the Telephone/Telematic Control Module, the OnStar system needs to be reconfigured and the Telematics Service Mode deactivated using the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051.

Have the VIN and customer details on hand.

Note. DO NOT exchange Telephone/Telematic Control Modules between vehicles! Each module contains specific Station Identification (STID) and Electronic Serial Number (ESN) data unique to the VIN. This data is used by OnStar and National Cellular Telephone Network to identify the vehicle and administer the customers account. Failure to reconfigure the control module after replacement will prevent OnStar services and features from functioning, and will result in a customer return for repair. Always replace the emergency (back-up) battery when replacing the Telephone/Telematic Control Module.

Replacing

1. Where applicable, carefully record the 8-character Station Identification (STID) number and Electronic Serial Number (ESN) from labels on replacement module.

Note. In the event the STID and ESN are not readable from labels on the replacement control module, they must be read using the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 after the control module is installed and the Telematics Service Mode is deactivated. Replacement control modules are shipped with Telematics Service Mode activated, and are already coded for USA/CDN application. While the Telematics Service Mode must be deactivated prior to Telematics system use, coding of the control module after replacement is not necessary. Telematics Service Mode activated is indicated by a red system status light. System status light must change to green after Service Mode is deactivated.

Reconfiguration

1. Drive vehicle outside to area away from tall buildings, and with no overhead obstructions (trees, bridges, etc.).
2. Press the blue OnStar ( "On*" ) button. A recorded introduction will be heard.
3. Press the "On*" button again at any time during the recording (it is not necessary to wait for the recording to finish).
4. When an OnStar call center advisor answers, identify yourself as an Audi Technician, and that you have replaced the "Vehicle Communications Interface Unit (VCIU)".

1. Supply advisor with STID number and ESN from new module. Supply the VIN and customer details if necessary. The advisor will guide you through the system reconfiguration and update of the customers account.
2. When reconfiguration is complete, end call by pressing the Communications ( "DOT" ) button.
3. Wait ten minutes and press the "On*" button again to verify system operation. Inform call center advisor you are an Audi Technician performing a quality check after VCIU replacement/system reconfiguration.
4. End call by pressing the Communications ( "DOT" ) button

Note. Normal connection time is 10 - 15 seconds. However, depending on local cellular/GPS conditions, making a connection could take up to three minutes. Be patient. If the message: "unable to contact OnStar" is heard, try relocating vehicle to a more elevated or open area and repeat connection attempts. Depending on the local cellular/GPS traffic conditions, several connection attempts may be necessary (and are normal). If the message: "OnStar request ended" is heard, the cellular connection was interrupted before the connection was completed. Wait for a short period of time before repeating connection attempt. If you are still unable to connect, call OnStar Customer Care at 1-888-390-4050. The advisor will verify the customers OnStar account is active.

Auxiliary Speaker (Telematics) R91 , removing and installing

Removing

1. Remove lower B-pillar trim on front passengers side --> «70 - INTERIOR TRIM»(/audi/s8/d3-2007-2011/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior) .
2. Disconnect harness connectors and remove trim.

1. Twist open the mount - 1 - on outside on Auxiliary Speaker (Telematics) R91 - 2 - in - direction of arrow - and remove Auxiliary Speaker (Telematics) R91 from trim toward front.

Installing

1. Install in reverse order.

Telematics Control Head E264 , removing and installing

The Telematics Control Head is located in the front interior light module.

Note. In the event any of the OnStar control buttons are either inadvertently or deliberately pressed for longer than 15 seconds, the OBD program assumes a button is sticking. The red status light will come on and a DTC loads in memory. Use Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in mode "Guided Fault Finding". Check DTC memory for DTC 01526 mechanical malfunction. Inform customers accordingly. A faulty control button cannot be replaced separately. Replace complete Telematics control head.

Removing

1. Disconnect electrical connection - 1 - and unclip it from the retainer - 2 -.
2. On the front side of Front Interior Light W1 , unclip the Telematics Control Head E264 from retainer - arrow 2 - and swivel the Telematics Control Head E264 upward out of Front Interior Light W1 - arrow 1 -.

Installing

1. Install in reverse order.
