Ignition System 15 illustrations ~3641 words

General notes on ignition system

  1. The engine control module is equipped with On Board Diagnostic (OBD).
  2. A voltage of at least 11.5 V is necessary for satisfactory functioning of the electrical components.
  3. In the case of some tests, a malfunction may be recognized and stored by the control module. At the end of all tests and repairs, the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory should be checked and, if necessary, erased.
  4. If the engine starts briefly and then stops after the DTC search, repair or tests on components, this may be because the immobilizer is blocking the engine control module. The DTC memory must then be checked and, if necessary, adaptation carried out on the control module.

Safety precautions

To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the fuel injection and ignition system, the following must be noted

  1. Do not touch or disconnect ignition cables when the engine is running or at starter speed.
  2. Always switch off the ignition before connecting or disconnecting the battery, otherwise the engine control module may be damaged.
  3. Always switch off the ignition before connecting or disconnecting injection or ignition system wiring or tester cables.
  4. To run engine at starting speed without actually starting it (for example, in order to test compression), unplug connector from the output stages of the ignition coils and also the connectors on the injectors. After completing the work, check the DTC memory and erase it.
  5. Always switch off the ignition before washing the engine.

If no short circuit or open circuit is found

  1. Replace engine control module. See «MOTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J220-, REPLACING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/fuel-system/#multiport-fuel-injection-mfi-42l-v8-5v-bbd__motronic-engine-control-module-ecm-j220) .

Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor -G40- and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor 2 -G163-, checking

The CMP sensor indicates the ignition position for cylinder 1.

If the CMP sensor fails to function, the knock control is switched off and the ignition timing is retarded slightly because the signals can no longer be assigned to the cylinders.

Even without a signal from the CMP sensor, the engine will continue to run and can also be re started.

  1. When a malfunction is detected, the engine control module produces one spark for each cylinder on every crankshaft revolution.
  2. The fact that the control module is out of phase by one engine revolution does not have any noticeable effect on the injection system. If this happens, the fuel is injected "advanced" (when the intake valve is closed) instead of while the intake valve is open. This has only a minor influence on the quality of the air/fuel mixture.

Note. Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor 2 -G163- is located at rear of left cylinder head (bank 2). Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor -G40- is located at front of right cylinder head (bank 1). Location of CMP sensors. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS OVERVIEW .

Checking actuation of CMP sensor

For the following checks, use leads from adapter set VAG 1594.

  1. Push back rubber sleeve on relevant CMP sensor connector.
  2. Connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp to sockets 1 and 2 on CMP sensor connector from rear (connector remains attached to CMP sensor).

Note. Sockets are numbered accordingly on the back of the connector.

  1. Operate starter for a few seconds. Diode test lamp must flash briefly on each second engine revolution.

Note. Diode test lamps with a low current consumption continue to glow faintly between impulses from the engine control module (rather than going out completely) and become much brighter when receiving an impulse.

If diode test lamp does not flash, check voltage supply.

Checking power supply for CMP sensor

  1. Disconnect connector from relevant CMP sensor.
  2. Switch ignition on.
  3. Connect hand-held multimeter VAG 1526 (voltage measurement range) between engine Ground and socket 1 of relevant connector. Specified value: approx. 5 V

Checking signal wiring for CMP sensor

  1. Switch ignition on.
  2. Connect hand-held multimeter VAG 1526 to measure voltage between engine Ground and socket 2 of relevant connector. Specified value: approx. battery voltage

Checking Ground wire for CMP sensor

  1. Connect hand-held multimeter VAG 1526 for resistance measurement between socket 3 on connector and engine Ground. Specified value: Continuity Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohm

If the specified values are all achieved and the diode test lamp does not flash (measured between contacts 1 and 2 with starter connector attached)

  1. Replace relevant CMP sensor.

If specifications are not attained, check wiring connections.

Checking wiring between CMP sensor and engine control module

  1. Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control module; do not connect engine control module. 1. Correct any open/short circuit as necessary. See appropriate System Wiring Diagram article.

If a trial erasure of the DTC memory is followed by the replaced indication of a DTC relating to the CMP sensor although all previous tests were OK, the following malfunctions are possible

  1. Rotor ring for CMP sensor misaligned, check phase location.
  2. Read readiness code. Generate readiness code again if DTC memory was erased. See «READINESS CODE, GENERATING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-42l-v8-5v-bbd) .

Function of camshaft timing control

The timing control of the intake camshaft is dependent on the engine load and engine speed. The exhaust camshafts are not timed.

The electrical solenoid valves for camshaft timing control (Valves for camshaft adjustment) switch oil pressure to the camshaft adjuster (mechanical timing control device).

The mechanical camshaft adjusters then time the intake camshafts of both banks of cylinders toward "advanced", i.e. the intake valves open earlier.
