Lock carrier with attachments, removing and installing

Note. The following list refers to items in (Scheme 1).

  1. Lock carrier Removing: Remove bumper. See «FRONT BUMPER»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumper) or «FRONT BUMPER (AUDI RS6)»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumper) . Remove noise insulation panel. See «NOISE INSULATION PANEL, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front__noise-insulation-panel-assembly-overview) . Disengage hood lock cable. See «HOOD LOCK CABLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#hood-lids__hood-lock-cable-removing-and-installing) . Remove intake air duct between lock carrier and air cleaner housing at lock carrier. Remove bolts from lock carrier. Disconnect harness connectors. Drain coolant and disconnect coolant hoses. See «DRAINING COOLANT, DISCONNECTING COOLANT HOSE»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front) . Detach condenser from lock carrier (do not disconnect lines) and secure with wire (i.e. at front wheel). See «A/C SYSTEM COMPONENTS (IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT)»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#air-conditioning__ac-system-components-in-engine-compartment) . NOTE: The condenser must not be suspended by its lines. Condenser lines must not be bent or kinked. Detach hydraulic fluid cooler. See «REMOVE HYDRAULIC FLUID COOLER»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front) . (Do not disconnect lines.) NOTE: The hydraulic fluid cooler must not be suspended by its lines. Hydraulic cooler lines must not be bent or kinked. Disconnect lines from ATF cooler (if equipped). Remove charge air cooler (if equipped). Loosen seal for hood at left and right at fender to lock carrier. Remove bolts -2-, -3-, -4- and -5- (second technician required to support lock carrier - 1 -). Installing: Install in reverse order of removal. Adjust headlights. Adjusting: Center lock carrier -1- between fenders. If fenders and hood are also being replaced, center them in relation to one another before adjusting lock carrier.
  2. Bolt 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
  3. Bolt w/washer assembly 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
  4. Bolt w/washer assembly 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
  5. Bolt w/washer assembly 50 Nm (37 ft lb) For service position remove bolt and install 3369 support tool

  1. Remove retainers for cooling line (for power steering) from engine support and transmission.

  1. Drain coolant from radiator. For 2.7L BiTurbo, see «COOLING SYSTEM, DRAINING AND FILLING»(ref-196251-S08137326292005100700000) . For 2.8L V6, see «DRAINING & FILLING»(ref-149958-S07423818212002110400000) . For 3.0L V6, see «COOLANT, DRAINING AND REFILLING»(ref-196255-S13544342892005100700000) .   2. Pull out retainer for coolant line connecting flange at bottom of radiator and remove connecting flange.

  1. On vehicles with charge air cooler, loosen bolt on hose clamp (arrow).
  2. Remove hose.

Lock carrier, service position

Note. Do not remove noise insulation panel. Loosen front quick-release screws only. See NOISE INSULATION PANEL, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW . Bumper must be removed. See FRONT BUMPER or FRONT BUMPER (AUDI RS6) .

Note. The following list refers to items in (Scheme 5).

  1. Lock carrier For service position: Remove intake air duct between lock carrier and air cleaner housing at lock carrier. On right side, remove bolt -5- and install 3369 support tool. On left side, install 3369 support tool into threaded hole. See «INSERTING 3369 SUPPORT TOOL»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front) . Remove bolts -2- on left and right. Remove bolts -3- and -4- and pull lock carrier -1- forward. Secure lock carrier. See «SECURING LOCK CARRIER»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front) .
  2. Torx (R) bolts 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
  3. Bolt w/washer assembly 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
  4. Bolt w/washer assembly 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
  5. Bolt w/washer assembly 50 Nm (37 ft lb) For service position: remove bolt and install 3369 support tool NOTE: After installing the lock carrier, check the headlight settings and adjust if necessary.

  1. Screw in 3369 support tool on left and right as shown.
  2. Pull lock carrier forward until rear hole in lock carrier aligns with front threaded hole in fender flange.

  1. Secure lock carrier in service position on left and right using bolts as shown.

  1. Fender Remove bumper. See «FRONT BUMPER»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumper) or «FRONT BUMPER (AUDI RS6)»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumper) . Remove wheelhousing liner. See «WHEELHOUSING LINERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/mirrors/#exterior-equipment) or «WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (AUDI RS6)»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/mirrors/#exterior-equipment) . Remove end plate. See «REMOVING AND INSTALLING END PLATE»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-front) . Remove headlights. See «LIGHTS, SWITCHES-EXTERIOR - UP TO 2000»(ref-196297) or «LIGHTS, SWITCHES-EXTERIOR - 2001 AND UP»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/cruise-control-systems/#lights-switches-exterior-2001-and-up) . . Disconnect harness connectors for side turn signals. Remove bolts -2-, -3-, -4-, -5- and -6-.
  2. Bolt w/washer assembly 10 Nm (7 ft lb)

  6. Bolt w/washer assembly 15 Nm (11 ft lb) NOTE: As a running change, the bolt w/washer assembly will change from hex-head to Torx (R). Bolt w/washer assemblies coated with locking fluid must always be replaced.

  1. Remove front wheel.
  2. Remove wheelhousing liner. See «WHEELHOUSING LINERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/mirrors/#exterior-equipment) or «WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (AUDI RS6)»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/mirrors/#exterior-equipment) .
  3. Remove bolts -1- from expanding clips -3- and remove plate -2- from fender -4-.

Noise insulation panel, assembly overview

Note. The following list refers to items in (Scheme 10).

  1. Quick-release screw 2 Nm (18 in. lb) Qty: 3 To move lock carrier to service position, unscrew only these quick-release screws.
  2. Front noise insulation panel
  3. Quick-release screw 2 Nm (18 in. lb) Qty: 3 If rear noise insulation panel - 4 - is installed, use longer quick-release screws.
  4. Rear noise insulation panel Only installed with certain engine versions

  6. Noise insulation panel mount Marking (recess) must face toward left-side of vehicle
