TIRE INFLATION (COLD)
Before attempting to check or adjust wheel alignment, ensure that tires are properly inflated. Refer to manufacturer's specifications given in owner's manual.
Note. Vehicles must not be loaded down with passengers or any weight that would cause vehicle to lean or sag, which will affect riding height.
All Models
Caster angle is not adjustable. If caster is not within specification, check suspension components for excessive wear or damage. Replace components as necessary to bring caster into specifications.
Coupe GT & 4000S
- With vehicle properly positioned on alignment rack, measure camber angle. If not within specifications, loosen ball joint mounting bolts on control arm and install Tools (US 4490) and (VW 552). (Scheme 1)
- Tighten Tool (VW 552) tensioning nut to adjust camber to specifications. Tighten outboard ball joint mounting nut to 47 ft. lbs. (65 N.m). Recheck camber and correct, if necessary. Remove Tools (US 4490) and (VW 552). Tighten inboard ball joint mounting to 47 ft. lbs. (65 N.m). Check toe.
4000S Quattro
Loosen both ball joint mounting nuts on control arms. Move ball joint with tool (3098) to adjust camber to specifications. Tighten mounting nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 N.m). Recheck camber and correct, if necessary. Check toe.
Camber Adjusting Tool. Scheme 1
5000S
Work under hood and loosen the upper strut mounting nuts. Place a socket over suspension strut nut. Move strut around in slots until camber is correct. Tighten nuts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m).
Coupe GT, 4000S, 4000S Quattro (4-Cylinder)
- Adjustments are done on only one side. Loosen clamp and lock nut on adjustable tie rod. Turn tie rod and set to specifications.
- Tighten clamp and lock nut on tie rod. If necessary, remove steering wheel and reposition so wheel spokes are horizontal when front wheels point straight-ahead.
| CAUTION | Toe must always be adjusted with both tie rods using steering gear centering tool (3075). |
Scheme 2
- Adjustment is done on both sides. Turn steering gear to center position. Remove bolt "A". (Scheme 2) Attach centering tool (3075) with bracket "B" over mounting nut of left tie rod (left arrow). (Scheme 3) (Scheme 2): Steering Gear Bolt "A"
- Remove bolt from spacer on chain of centering tool. Insert bolt through hole (marked with L) on centering tool, and tighten to steering gear (right arrow). (Scheme 3) Measure and divide total toe in half.
- Loosen clamps and outer lock nut on both tie rods. Turn both tie rods until specifications for toe is reached. Tighten clamp and lock nuts on tie rods.
- Check and reposition steering wheel in center position, if necessary. Remove centering tool and tighten bolt "A" to 14 ft. lbs. (20 N.m).
Steering Gear Centering Tool (3075). Scheme 3
Front (5000S)
- Steering gear Centering Tool (3076) must be used. Attach centering tool into holes on top of steering unit and tie rod carrier (arrows). (Scheme 4) Measure and divide total toe in half. Loosen clamps and outer lock nut on both tie rods. Turn both tie rods until specifications for toe is reached.
- Tighten clamp and lock nuts on tie rods. Check and reposition steering wheel in center position, if necessary. Remove centering tool.

Rear
On 4000 Quattro models only, rear adjustments are done on both sides. Loosen tie rod sleeve clamp nuts. Adjust toe by turning sleeve to specifications. Tighten clamp nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 N.m.)
