SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Note the following when working on the fuel system

WARNINGThere is a risk of injury because the fuel is under pressure. Place clean rags around the connection before opening the system. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection. Wear protective gloves. Wear safety glasses. Very hot fuel can burn your skin. The temperature of the fuel lines and fuel may reach 100 °C (212 °F) after stopping the engine. Let the fuel cool down before opening any line connections otherwise there is a danger of scalding. Wear protective gloves. Wear safety glasses.

To prevent personal injury and damage to the injection and pre-glow system, observe the following

  1. The ignition must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting injection and preglow system wiring or tester cables.
  2. Only clean engine with ignition switched off.
  3. If electrical connectors were disconnected and the engine was started, then malfunctions have been stored in the engine control module. "Check the DTC memory" in "OBD" => .
CAUTIONDanger of causing damage to electrical components when disconnecting the battery. Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery.

Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

Observe the following when working on the reducing agent metering system

WARNINGThe reducing agent can cause skin irritation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes! Wear protective gloves! If reducing agent should get on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water. If reducing agent gets in your eye, rinse the eye for several minutes with water. Never inhale or swallow the reducing agent! Should you swallow any reducing agent, rinse your mouth, drink plenty of water and contact a doctor immediately.

Note the following when removing or installing any components of the reducing agent metering system

  1. The reducing agent active/passive tanks must be empty when working on the reducing agent metering system. Be sure to read the work procedure whenever the reducing agent in the active or passive tank must be emptied. Drain the active tank or the passive tank, if necessary. For information on the active tank, refer to «ADBLUE® ACTIVE TANK, DRAINING»(/audi/q7/4l-2009-2015/remont/exhaust/#30l-exhaust-system-emission-controls-engine-codes-cata__adbluer-active-tank-draining) and for the passive tank, refer to «ADBLUE® PASSIVE TANK, DRAINING»(/audi/q7/4l-2009-2015/remont/exhaust/#30l-exhaust-system-emission-controls-engine-codes-cata__adbluer-passive-tank-draining) .

Note the following when removing and installing the active or passive tank

  1. The reducing agent active/passive tank must be empty. Drain the active or passive tank, if necessary. For information on the active tank, refer to «ADBLUE® ACTIVE TANK, DRAINING»(/audi/q7/4l-2009-2015/remont/exhaust/#30l-exhaust-system-emission-controls-engine-codes-cata__adbluer-active-tank-draining) and for the passive tank, refer to «ADBLUE® PASSIVE TANK, DRAINING»(/audi/q7/4l-2009-2015/remont/exhaust/#30l-exhaust-system-emission-controls-engine-codes-cata__adbluer-passive-tank-draining) .

AdBlue®, Automatic Regenerating

  1. After switching off the ignition, any reducing agent is recirculated from the reducing agent injector -N474- metering line back into the active tank.
  2. Before working in this area, wait 10 minutes after switching off the ignition so that the recirculation can complete.
  3. Likewise, wait 10 minutes after switching off the ignition before disconnecting the battery so that the recirculation process can complete. Refer to «BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING»(/audi/q7/4l-2009-2015/remont/charging-system/#battery-starter-generator-cruise-control__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .
WARNINGDanger due to reducing agent leaking out. To prevent large amounts of reducing agent when opening the metering line, wait for the recirculation process to complete SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

Note the following when working on the cooling system

WARNINGRisk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant. The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm. Cover the coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and then open it slowly to release the pressure in the system.

When working on a vehicle with the Start/Stop System, note the following

WARNINGDanger of serious personal injury if the engine starts automatically on vehicles with the start/stop system. If the start/stop system is activated (message in the instrument cluster), the engine can start automatically. Make sure the start/stop system is deactivated whenever working on the vehicle. Switch off the ignition and switch it on only when necessary.

If it is necessary to use testing and measuring devices on road tests, observe the following

WARNINGDistraction and improperly secured test equipment can lead to accidents. There is a risk that the passenger airbag could deploy in a collision. Operating testing and measuring equipment while driving creates a distraction. There is an increased risk of injury due to unsecured testing and measuring equipment. Always secure testers on the rear seat with a strap and have a second person on the rear seat operate them.

Note the following when working on the exhaust system

CAUTIONDanger of damaging the decoupling element. Decoupling element must not be bent more than 10°. Do not load decoupling element on cable. Do not damage wire mesh at decoupling element.

CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS

Even a little contamination can lead to faults. Observe the following guidelines for cleanliness when working on the fuel system, injection system and turbocharger

  1. Before loosening, connections and surrounding areas must be cleaned thoroughly with engine or brake cleaner, and then cleaned area must be dried completely.
  2. Immediately seal off lines and connections with clean plugs or caps.
  3. Place parts that have been removed on a clean surface and cover them. Use lint-free cloths.
  4. Carefully cover over opened components or seal, if repairs are not performed immediately.
  5. Only install clean components: Only unpack replacement parts immediately prior to installation. Do not use parts that have been stored unpacked (for example in tool boxes etc.).
  6. When the system is open: Do not work with compressed air. Do not move vehicle unless absolutely necessary.
  7. Make sure no fuel gets onto the fuel hoses. If necessary, wipe off the fuel hoses immediately. Replace any corroded fuel hoses.
  8. Protect disconnected electrical connectors from dirt and moisture and only connect if dry.

ADAPTING ADAPTATION VALUE AFTER DRAINING ADBLUE® OR REPLACING COMPONENTS

The adaptation value in the engine control module must be adapted with the vehicle tester when the reducing agent is drained or one of the components listed below is replaced.

  1. Active tank
  2. Reducing agent pump
  3. Reducing agent injector
  4. Reducing agent line
  5. Engine Control Module

Perform the adaptation using the vehicle tester in "Guided Functions" under "01-Adapting reducing agent tank adaptation values".

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: ENGINE NUMBER
  1. The engine number ("engine code" and "serial number") is located on the left side in the front under the high pressure pump toothed belt -arrow-.
  2. In addition, a sticker with "engine code" and "serial number" is affixed to the intake manifold.
  3. Engine codes beginning with "C" are four-digit.
  4. The first 3 digits of the engine code stand for displacement and the mechanical structure of the engine. They are stamped in the cylinder block, including the serial number.
  5. The fourth digit describes the engine output and torque and depends on the engine control module.

Note. The engine number is covered by the ribbed belt idler roller. Remove the ribbed belt idler roller. Refer to LEFT RIBBED BELT IDLER ROLLER . The 4-digit engine code is on the type plate, vehicle data label and engine control module. Locations of the type plate and vehicle data label.

ENGINE CONTAMINANTS

  1. To prevent foreign objects from entering when working on the engine, seal open intake and exhaust channels with suitable plugs, for example from the engine bung set VAS 6122.
  2. If mechanical damage to a cylinder bank is found, check the intake and exhaust tract and the combustion chambers in the opposite cylinder back for foreign objects to prevent further damage.

CONTACT CORROSION

Contact corrosion can occur if incorrect fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers, etc.) are used.

For this reason, only install connecting elements that are treated with a special coating.

Also, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive consist of non-conductive materials.

If there are doubts about the suitability of parts, generally use new parts.

Note. Only original replacement parts are recommended, they are checked and compatible with aluminum. Audi accessories are recommended. Damage due to contact corrosion is not covered by warranty.

COOLERS, CONDENSERS AND CHARGE AIR COOLERS

When assembled correctly, the radiator, condenser and turbocharger may have slight impressions on their fins. This is not damage. Do not replace the radiator, condenser or turbocharger because of impressions like that.

LINES, ROUTING AND SECURING

  1. Mark the individual fuel, hydraulic and vacuum lines for the EVAP canister system as well as the electrical wires before disconnecting and/or removing them. This will prevent a mix-up when reconnecting them. If necessary, draw sketches or take pictures.
  2. Due to the limited space inside the engine compartment, be especially careful when working near moving or hot parts. This will also prevent damaging the lines.

FUEL SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS

Let the engine run a few minutes at a moderate speed.

Turn off the ignition.

Check the entire fuel system for leaks.

If there are leaks in spite of correct tightening specifications, the corresponding component must be replaced.

Then perform a road test and depress the accelerator pedal all the way at least one time.

Then check the high pressure area again for leaks.

VACUUM SYSTEM, CHECKING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Hand Vacuum Pump VAS 6213

Procedure

Check all vacuum lines in the vacuum system for

  1. Cracks
  2. Damage caused by animals
  3. Crimps
  4. Leaks and leakage

Check the vacuum line leading to and from the solenoid valve.

If there is a fault, check the vacuum lines for the named component, but also all the vacuum lines.

If using the VAS 6213 does not produce any vacuum or if the vacuum drops again right away, then check the hand vacuum pump and the connection hoses for leaks.
